10:16 Night Vision became quite useful right before the Steam release, with the implementation of yet another experimental light engine which you can find in the Options menu. However, default maps do not take advantage of such engine, and you will find it generally utilized in modded servers. 14:16 The game mostly revolved around mods back then. It contained such a surplus amount of them that, unlike CS1.6 where most servers revolved around de_dust2, you would forget that map even existed. CS-2D was honestly my childhood. The Zombie Plagues, Zombie Escapes, TOP tier RP and RPG, Amazing Minigames, hell, even the vanilla was super fun! And i can easily say it is one of those games that was nostalgic as f*ck to me! I NEVER had any fun as much as i did on CS-2D
I played this so, so much back then. Made maps, skins, and hosted a prison server too! Thanks for covering it, really nostalgic and unexpected. Just wanted to point out something about the NVGs: When creating maps, you could import custom transparent sprites and also select them to become invisible to the NVG googles - this way, map makers would often "mask" rooms with a semi-transparent dark overlay, and until you turned on your NVG goggles, you were essentially blind. This was way before any lighting update and I wouldn't know if it's still a thing - it also depended on map makers utilizing that feature.

Wow I forgot all about this game! I remember playing it like 10+ years ago and thought it was so cool. Had no idea it was basically made by just one guy, very impressive work. Awesome video all around! Hopefully this makes some people try it out!
Thank you for covering one of my favorite games from my childhood, i was 9 when i started playing this gem (around 2007) shortly after i first played cs 1.6, and i fell in love immediately. As you said, this game appeals way more to the casual audience and this was even clearer in its golden era, the modding and mapping community in this game back then was one of the strongest and most passionate things ive seen in a game and i couldnt be left out so i even made my own mods, which werent more than trashy copycats from other existing ones, but what i truly loved to do in this game was mapping, i had my own server open to the public to show the huge variety of maps i used to make and i remember my server would get full everyday, i truly was happy playing this thing! 💚
The amount of hours i spent in this game as a kid is unreal (yes pun intended), i remember ctf_cs2dfortress being basically your average 2fort match in TF2, a never ending cycle of people running in and dying to a wall of turrets that you would spend 10 mins each getting them to lvl 3. My favorite mode by far though was tibia world, nothing better than sitting in the same spot, shooting at some high level boss through a wall for 30 mins straight with a wooden crossbow so you could get a pair of shoes and a helmet instead of a better weapon.
nice, CS2D is now getting an attention. can't wait to have servers full of players because of just one video, great job 👍 (also my YouHelpMe mod in 1:15 lol)
You know, a couple years ago I always wondered if someone would make an interesting video about CS2D for some reason because it’s a pretty underrated game. I’m glad you did so
I remember having a shitty pentium laptop with 128mb ram and basically CS 1.6 and 2D was the two games I could play without burning the house down. 2D more so since when I was a kid I liked the zombie mode so much and made a lot of maps in that game based around real places in my life for that mode. Honestly if there is a mobile port of this game I'd play the heck out of it in my spare time.
This game to me was like the hidden gem everyone knows, like, everyone tried it when they first installed steam and didn't have games, but no one talks about it
I remember playing this game and back then and probably still now there used to be these continuously running servers with a map of a big city or something like that and it had the building elements of the construction game mode but was playing in the zombie gamemode. So as a human you could barricade yourself in houses and maximize your defenses against the zombies. It was pretty cool
Bro such a nostalgia... If you can find maps made by Hitsugaya, those maps were crazy back in the day. He made whole Portal games in it and other cool maps with lua scripts. He even made a whole server in a MMORPG setting that was full all the time, it was such a good map.
Used to play this on my school laptop because it couldn't run anything. It really scratched that itch of CS Source. I never figured out how the Construction gamemode worked back in the day, but watching your video it seems nearly identical to Source Forts but 2D, and SF back in the day was awesome
Always loved this game and unreal software, made a lot of cs2d maps and first got into coding and modding with stranded and carnage contest over ten years ago
8:19 they could do this like in project zomboid, make a fog between the walls. And after that, It's became "who do jumpscare and shoot his friend first" and in "fog on war" you still can see between the walls
I mean it was made by one dude (at least that's what the site says), It's good for what it is and I like it. You have your own opinion and I respect it
I am very happy to come across such a video. I played this game for 7 years. There are different game modes in the game. The game is really fun and I recommend it to people who have a bad system. Edit:I forgot to mention, this game turns people into software developers.
back then this 2d game was pure gold for me. There were thousands of online players with lots of crazy gamemodes It was really funny. Thanks for that dude who made this.
6:43 remember playing on this one map called awp_gray alot, it's dead now but it was super fun, most of it was just people spinning around and flicking around corners.
I love this game so much way back in 2011 when I had a potato pc. The roleplay servers, tibia servers, prison maps, and of course the ctf_sparta servers were good as hell!! Fighting my way against people with machetes, never-ending turrets and barbed wires until we capture their flag... damnn memories broo
I also loved the sparta and other ctf maps. Those zombie maps with construction were really amazing too! I loved those final moments of matches where the last remaining base was overrun and that "dinosaur" sound kept getting spammed.
There was a popular jail server I always played, going in the cafeteria and using the rpg at the bottom to kill new players was a blast, shame there are no people playing anymore
Fun fact: If you go to "more settings" you can find a option that changes the daytime of the map, setting the map to night time creates what i call "fog of war 2 hd remix.", I think it works on ultra though. (Note: nightvision becomes useful, but its eyebleeding.)
This... This right here is nostalgia. I used to make tons of custom levels in this game and my own skins and weapons thinking people could see it online, I spent hours upon hours learning the mechanics of the level creator and a lot of my english, I learned it from this... Dude, thank you so much for making this video, I'm downloading CS2D again, I need to revive those memories
14:20 Another CS2D editor fun fact that I remember bringing up on the community poll: it has ent_npc, which allows you to put a couple of Half-Life NPCs in your map, such as headcrabs and zombies. I don't remember if Vortigaunts were in there too, but I wouldn't doubt it. With everything that CS2D includes in the editor, you could somewhat faithfully re-create the first few chapters of Half Life, albeit without platforming or climbing.
Pawngame was peak web gaming. I remember I made a base destruction map that was only two screens wide and had the attackers spawn above the defenders. People seemed to enjoy it
Im still playing it since 2007. It has a big history even it's not popular. Our small community still remembers the good old days in competitive scenes
3:03 In case it wasn't mentioned. RCON (Password) stands for `Remote Console`. When you create a dedicated server you have the option to create a RCON password which allows other people to gain admin access over the server and use commands remotely.
Wow! I didn't think anyone would ever mention this game! I spent SO much time playing this game when I was younger! I made a ton of friends here playing different gamemodes! My favorite one was the zombie survival. We'd just hold up in a corner, building turrets, and praying we don't get overrun by other players. I honestly miss those days. Damn. I should hit up my old friends here.
You said the movement relative to crosshair direction was really stupid but it was common knowledge to the "pro" players at the time that it was actually the best option once you learned to use it. In closer range battles, there is a weird side to side dance you do to strafe and dodge shots. Relative to crosshair made dancing and shooting very easy. Go back and find old montages and you will see what I mean.
I also want to say that I really enjoy watching your videos with your calm voice and deadpan sense of humor talking about my favorite games.🤣 It's so perfect! Cheers!
In my opinion, the best way to enjoy CS2D was not the default gamemodes, but rather the many custom gamemodes and servers created by the community. I remember how many fun times I had playing on the FWS servers like jail, escape, doghouse, minigames and deathrun (Anyone remember escape from Virus K and California Jail? lol) The RPG servers were also tons of funs, same as the custom zombie ones which were Infinitely more fun than the vanilla zombie gamemode. Sadly, all these servers are now either empty or gone (RIP fws escape), the only way to enjoy those maps and gamemodes is the ...C4... server which still has some of those maps, but good luck convincing that server to play anything else other than the most boring maps it has.
i remember how addicting it is to play in de_cs2d and learning how to use shotgun and bouncing grenades to the point that i always got to the top every round
0:07 i'm 13 and i'm GLAD i got introduced to CS by None other then CS 1.6, in 2016 Ofc i just played with bots(yeah back when it actually HAD bots), because you'd find more Alive things in a cemetary then Not-dead servers with no custom crap in 1.6
I remember making so many custom maps for this game and uploading only one because i was completely destroyed by the commenters since i didn't know english very well and didn't know what a bitmap was...
YOO 8 MINUTES AND YOO FINALLY THE BEST COUNTER STRIKE CHANNEL TALKS ABOUT THIS MASTERPIECE! This is my lucky day 😎 Edit: Bro you forgot the mods which are the best part of CS2D
@@LamWarp Ye my error i was going to say other thing but I forgot it bruh, but really u shouldve talked about mods there are even story mods and those epik shits made in Lua
CS was also not created by Valve, but rather primarily by Minh Le with the assistance of Jess Cliffe. At least until Beta 5.0 where Valve became involved. However, Le and Cliffe were still the core developers. Then, Valve ruined the CS world by releasing the first final versions via their new Steam platform at that time, so forcing people to pay for what mostly Le and Cliffe did thanks also to the altruistic support, help, feedback and contribution of the entire CS community. Charging money for playing a game mostly developed by the community? Charging money for skins, sprays, etc. also developed by the community? GFY.
RCON is a protocol for remotely sending commands to a server. It's used in multiplayer Source (and presumably GoldSrc) to allow clients to run console commands on the server through the rcon console command. The RCON password is, somewhat self-explanatory, the password for RCON use on a server. If you don't know the RCON password the server will ignore any commands you attempt to send to it. If no password is set the server will not accept RCON commands.
The biggest charm of this game was all the custom gamemodes like the ones where you owned a house and kill other people while robbing them, also stuff like custom zombies, COD zombies and similar.
Mods make the game a whole different world too. I remember playing whole mmorpgs and darkrp style servers there. Cosmetics, vehicles, weapons, gamemodes, even a fucking chatbot. It was really wild, I miss that era.
No hecking way, that I just randomly found a game, that I've been looking for decades for, since I accidentally stumbled across its walkthrough on youtube, and now want to feel nostalgia, on a video about 2D Counter-Strike. Stranded is the game I saw walkthrough in my childhood, and I couldn't find that game anywhere. What a luck....
I've loved this game for so long, I was very great at 1 shot AWP games and even started hosting my own server with my own mods. The game started dying so I just eventually left.
Happy Town map in construction game mode was where all the legends used to hang out. Building your own house and trying to break into the admin building to steal super armor and laser or portal gun was everyone's sole quest to dominate all of happy town. This game was literally Minecraft before Minecraft existed along with so many other cool game modes and things you can do in this little gem.
3:03 rcon is just a server that allows admins to connect to the game for other programs and for example get info about the game or control the game Update: RCON was originally made by Valve for source games to run console commands through the web (from what i remember minecraft also has a version of it)
RCON just stands for "Remote CONtrol", and is used in numerous server-client games that were made long before Source engine games (e.g. Quake 3). RCON's purpose is to run commands remotely via an extenal client by requiring a password to be sent with each command. This is done to administrate servers without needing to have access to the server's control panel or physical hardware.

0:20 VSauce moment lol
True😅
Does he still make videos?
@@MokaBeats664Yes Bro!
@@NishiPandey88 the last one I saw on his channel is really old, so I don't know for any newer videos...
My favorite mode by far though was tibia world, nothing better than sitting in the same spot, shooting at some high level boss through a wall for 30 mins straight with a wooden crossbow so you could get a pair of shoes and a helmet instead of a better weapon.
nice, CS2D is now getting an attention. can't wait to have servers full of players because of just one video, great job 👍
(also my YouHelpMe mod in 1:15 lol)
I imagine Peter had a hard but fun time making this god tier underrated game.
12:56 The Gate Field is basically a high tech barbed wire, it does damage only to enemies (you and allies can pass thru).
finally someone popular in youtube talked about 2D Counter-Strike
You know, a couple years ago I always wondered if someone would make an interesting video about CS2D for some reason because it’s a pretty underrated game. I’m glad you did so
I remember having a shitty pentium laptop with 128mb ram and basically CS 1.6 and 2D was the two games I could play without burning the house down. 2D more so since when I was a kid I liked the zombie mode so much and made a lot of maps in that game based around real places in my life for that mode.
Honestly if there is a mobile port of this game I'd play the heck out of it in my spare time.
Bro, this is pure nostalgia… I even remember when it was released. Good times 😭😭😭😭
This game to me was like the hidden gem everyone knows, like, everyone tried it when they first installed steam and didn't have games, but no one talks about it
Man, this unlocked a memory.
So much time spent making scenario maps in that editor.
I admire your work, i now understand how much work must be put into to one single video
I think you have now brought this game to life...
wow the nostalgia hit me like a freight train with this one. I played a ton of this with my friends as a kid lol.
Always loved this game and unreal software, made a lot of cs2d maps and first got into coding and modding with stranded and carnage contest over ten years ago
"there's also bot support built-in which 1.6 doesnt have" does that mean i've been playing modded cs 1.6 all along?
8:19 they could do this like in project zomboid, make a fog between the walls. And after that, It's became "who do jumpscare and shoot his friend first" and in "fog on war" you still can see between the walls
Underrated game
Yes it's underrated because it's trash af.
I mean it was made by one dude (at least that's what the site says), It's good for what it is and I like it. You have your own opinion and I respect it
@@n8bayonet Your father never loved you as a child.

I remember playing a homebrew port of this on my PSP back in 2011 and was amazed at how accurate and detailed it was.
@@armando3168 Only a few dozen globally. 😢
I remember hosting tibia server (+ edited some thing in my own) and see ten to twenty players joining and playing it, oh my god
Gate field is like a barbed wire, but it doesn't hurt you or your teammate.
14:20
Another CS2D editor fun fact that I remember bringing up on the community poll: it has ent_npc, which allows you to put a couple of Half-Life NPCs in your map, such as headcrabs and zombies. I don't remember if Vortigaunts were in there too, but I wouldn't doubt it. With everything that CS2D includes in the editor, you could somewhat faithfully re-create the first few chapters of Half Life, albeit without platforming or climbing.
This reminds me of the overhead version of PawnGame from quite a while back.
Pawngame was peak web gaming. I remember I made a base destruction map that was only two screens wide and had the attackers spawn above the defenders. People seemed to enjoy it
Those Stranded games are axtuwlly oretty popular among survival fans as far as I know
I was expecting a estaregg at the end but cool video!
Stranded and Stranded 2 are actually pretty fun too. I recommend taking them for a spin if you’re bored and have an hour or two to spare.
played stranded a lot as a child.. cant get it running on my steam deck though
Assassination was actually a gamemode in CS. I used to play it a lot on Condition Zero.
Oh wow, CS2D has a lot less _depth_ than regular Counterstrike? Who would've thought? It's almost like...
Im still playing it since 2007. It has a big history even it's not popular. Our small community still remembers the good old days in competitive scenes
i love how him being a solo dev allows him to add whatever he wants, sillies that wouldn't pass a board meeting
Great video, keep up the amazing work!
3:03 In case it wasn't mentioned. RCON (Password) stands for `Remote Console`. When you create a dedicated server you have the option to create a RCON password which allows other people to gain admin access over the server and use commands remotely.
This server is getting gay

Make it even gayer
No gay for you!
I don't get itm
@@Account_abandoned-q7m watch the first 8 seconds of the video again
This game was my childhood back when it wasn’t on steam and only available on unrealsoftware or other software sites. This video was much needed
2:05 me an old tf2 player (not ancient player) : it like thousand of voices cried in pain.

I remember how many fun times I had playing on the FWS servers like jail, escape, doghouse, minigames and deathrun (Anyone remember escape from Virus K and California Jail? lol)
The RPG servers were also tons of funs, same as the custom zombie ones which were Infinitely more fun than the vanilla zombie gamemode.
Sadly, all these servers are now either empty or gone (RIP fws escape), the only way to enjoy those maps and gamemodes is the ...C4... server
which still has some of those maps, but good luck convincing that server to play anything else other than the most boring maps it has.
i miss the escape maps

7:10: "CS2D has a lot less *depth* than regular counter strike"
Well since it’s top down, wouldn’t it be height?
Unreal Software is a legend for making childhood with this game and many others thank you Unreal Software
"The first counter strike" while showing 1.6 is hilarious!
i remember how addicting it is to play in de_cs2d and learning how to use shotgun and bouncing grenades to the point that i always got to the top every round
I never played this before but now im enjoying this, its hard to aim here at 1st when u used to be in 3D....the bots here are brutal....
0:07 i'm 13 and i'm GLAD i got introduced to CS by None other then CS 1.6, in 2016
Ofc i just played with bots(yeah back when it actually HAD bots), because you'd find more Alive things in a cemetary then Not-dead servers with no custom crap in 1.6

I remember making so many custom maps for this game and uploading only one because i was completely destroyed by the commenters since i didn't know english very well and didn't know what a bitmap was...
carnage contest is too good fr
YOO 8 MINUTES AND YOO FINALLY THE BEST COUNTER STRIKE CHANNEL TALKS ABOUT THIS MASTERPIECE! This is my lucky day 😎
Edit: Bro you forgot the mods which are the best part of CS2D
I don't know if I'm a "counter strike" channel. I don't really want to be one. Also I just briefly talked about the mods, not too in depth.
GFY.
1:30 This guy made ARK in 2008 ☕
RCON is a protocol for remotely sending commands to a server.
I'm downloading this

This game feels like it was made with actual care and love into it instead of the money machine of CSGO lmao
I used to play this as a kid. Very fond memories. Stranded II was also my favorite during 5th grade elementary.
3:03 rcon is just a server that allows admins to connect to the game for other programs and for example get info about the game or control the game
Update: RCON was originally made by Valve for source games to run console commands through the web (from what i remember minecraft also has a version of it)
RCON just stands for "Remote CONtrol", and is used in numerous server-client games that were made long before Source engine games (e.g. Quake 3). RCON's purpose is to run commands remotely via an extenal client by requiring a password to be sent with each command. This is done to administrate servers without needing to have access to the server's control panel or physical hardware.
I've never seen this game before, but I have to say, it's amazingly well-made for its time. Props to the developer.
