This solo live performance by Bobby Hatfield of “Unchained Melody”, while not the first rendition, is widely considered to be the best, as well as to be one of the top five live performances of all time. It is widely considered to be the single best performance of this song, of all time. Bobby Hatfield and his singing partner, Bill Medley, put “blue eyed soul” on the musical map. One man, one microphone, no autotune, no computer tricks. Just pure talent and that rarest of all singing voices, the contra tenor. Brilliant. Timeless and brilliant.

This was my mom and dad's song! Married in 1960. I have a video of them dancing to this on their 50th. My mom passed away from covid in 2021, and I played this song for her until she took her last breath! I will forever love this song!
That was a wonderful thing for you to do. To bring back all those memories for your mum at the end, bless you, you would have made her passing so much more peaceful. My mum didn’t die of Covid19 but a mixed type dementia 3 yrs ago during covid that took her within a year. She was saved the years of decline and was able to die at home. She was at peace while I played the Irish songs she loved including I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen, and I Wish I Was In Carrickfergus, she died with a smile on her face as I sang along quietly. As hearing is the last sense to leave, I’m comforted that she had that experience as I’m sure your mum did too. Take care, love from Northern Ireland xx

July 2 of this year is 40 years for us, a son, 2 daughters, and 4 grandsons and a granddaughter later, we still love each other and slow dance to this song. Two points to this performance... 1. He was recovering from a cold. If you listen you can hear it in spots. Very well covered though. 2. His mom was in the audience and he wanted to show her a great performance. I think he achieved that as well. What Mom wouldn't be proud?
Sadly, he was anything but relaxed. He had crippling performance anxiety that eventually led to him becoming a drug addict and his early death. An enormous talent cut down by his demons.

So very good to hear someone actually wanting to hear real music - give me Tina, John Denver, Aretha, George Harrison, Cyndi - people who sing their hearts out! Singers with “soul”, man. :) 💕💔
I still can't believe people never heard of this song!!! It just baffles me!!! Lol I'm just glad people are listening to older music for the first time!
Back in the day this was called "blue-eyed soul". No TV music videos at the time and people were surprised to find out they were white; conversely, people were surprised to find out that the great Charlie Pride was Black. Rest in peace Bobby Hatfield.
First song that caught my ear on the radio was Ring of Fire with Johnny Cash and the second one was Charlie Pride- Kerliga. I was 10 love Charlie Pride!
I was an 80's child raised on music daddy grew up listening to. Watching these type of reactions to music I've known my entire life is probably just as much to me as it is to those who actually grew up with this being the music they had available at the time. The thing I probably miss the most about my father is riding next to him in his truck as a young child, shifting the gears for him and listening to truly great music that was so full of emotion and soul. Boy I could shift gears like no one's business before I could ever reach the pedals. Every time I hear this type of music, I can smell the exhaust from that old truck, the smell of the stale cigarette butts in the ashtray and see the smile on daddy's face.
A small club near El Toro Marine Base in So. California. A black Marine stood up and called out, "That's righteous, brothers!" A : while later, Bobby suggested they call themselves "The Righteous Brothers." The beginning of the greatest duo in the history of music. I wish Bobby were here to see the impact just listening to his voice has on everyone who has the good fortune to hear him. But being Bobby, he would be very humble, but happy. And Bill...great in his own right, still performing at age 82.
Somebody, pleeeze tell these Young Bloods that The Righteous Brothers COPIED the styles of the R&B greats from Day One. "Unchained Melody" was a huge hit by Black artists in the same style copied by The RB's; the RB's BECAME famous precisely as two White boys who sounded Black. Look it up, People!
Elizabeth Rich. The Righteous Brothers had great respect and admiration for Soul, RnB, loved performing them. When I first heard them in the early 60's, I thought they were black. They were so talented and did great justice to black music. They didn't do it to "copy" black music, but because they loved it. And they did they did a great job!
Your grandad has excellent taste in music 👏🏻 And massively strong mind and body to fight what he’s been through.. I hope he’s doing well by the way stay blessed 🙏🏻
My wife and I had this song played at our wedding in 1991. I loved since the first time I heard it 10 to 15 years before that. Loved it in the movie, Ghost, which was one of my wife's favourite films. Sadly, my beautiful wife passed away suddenly, on 1st Sept, 2004. We had 4 primary school aged kids at the time. Now, every time I hear this song the memories of that day come flooding back and make the tears just pour down my cheeks. I'm 70 now and this wonderful song, sung by one of two very talented men, is still great, maybe perennial. Just look at the faces of Empress JoyJean and TooSushi. They get it. Beautiful.
This was my high-school sweetheart and my song. We moved on but this song will never let me forget my innocent days. One of the most beautiful songs ever made
I grew up on this music. My family taught us well and I taught my children who now have children. And now I am teaching my grandkids. That was actual musical talent. What the industry is sorely lacking now.
I feel for all these youngsters experiencing the Righteous Bros for the first time. I grew up being able to slow dance to all their tunes. The ladies would get close! Now check out "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".
Hi this is my 1st time seeing your channel & am so impressed with you and the love you have for your grandpa. I’m 71 years old and I remember this song so well. I’m really enjoy listening to “good” music again. Thanks for reacting to it. I’m a new subscriber.
This song is CLASSIC. It is without a doubt the best make out song EVER! You don’t hear music like this anymore. I’m so lucky to have been a teenager in the 60s when we had the best music.
I can still remember slow dancing to this song with a man I fell in love every weekend at a little hometown nightclub. He was in the military and I from a military family. We melted into each other’s arms as we slow danced, like no other slow dance and would get lost in this beautiful love song. It would give me the shivers - I don’t know how else to describe it ! My love and I grew so close Thru this song when suddenly war broke out suddenly and he was snatched away. It’s been decades gone by and I was never able to find out what happened to him. Just that he was on an Aircraft Carrier And something horrible happened. I still cry when I hear this song. I still wonder where he is.
@@katthill7506 It was the Andy Williams show. The single was released in July and peaked in August before that October performance which is why Andy wanted him to sing it.
I was born in 1950 - the music from my growing-up years was beyond compare. I was 15 when this song hit the airwaves and it was a wonderful time to be alive.
Every time I listen to this or anything with a Bobby Hatfield solo, it simply breaks my heart to know how we lost him. He was just an amazing singer. My heart goes out to his family, and of course, Bill Medley. Together they were magic.
The scariest part of Bobby Hatfield nailing this live was the lip bite at the end. He knew that it was the best performance he gave with this song. Yeah, no auto tune or any of that other stuff they use nowadays, but that lip bite said it all.
The song was written by the Bee Gees . It has been cover by my artist like Al Green in the 70's. Listen to the Bee Gees sing it. It one of their many hits.
@@Aurora-tp3dyI hadn't heard that. They had also just done another song, had about a minute convo with Andy where he sounds out of breath before doing this song, was supposedly also under the weather, plus nervous becuz his mom was in audience seeing him live for first time. He nailed it.
I feel that the music from My Generation, the 60's, 70's and even back to the 50's music would help to make this world a better place. Music, like this helps in making people feel good. In the 60's, my dad would always have the radio on and all these great songs would be played over and over. We had The Bandstand, Soul Train and others that helped in keeping us introduced to all these great artist music. Such an awesome time and awesome music of my generation and I applaud this younger generation having videos that share this music of an era that was awesome and still is today. Thank you for taking the time to listen to these classic great hits that has transcended time. 🤗

The most romantic song ever. Bobby’s parents were in the audience and he was very nervous.
They also did “you’ve lost that living feeling. Another amazing tune.
So funny watching the reactions of all you young people !!! This was music from my day! ❤
I love this song always gives me goosebumps
A piece covered by many, but none better than Bobby Hatfield.
Surprise, surprise! Women swoon! I’ve loved the Righteous Brothers for many many years. I’m 67. 👍 Everyone should hear them. You won’t be sorry.
I absolutely love this song! It is truly a classic.
We, Marines, have influence everywhere. Semper Fi!
Also, check out Dimash!
OooRah!!
This song moves me all these years, now I’m 76💖
Me too, 76, and it still makes me cry it's so good.
Your grandad has excellent taste in music 👏🏻
And massively strong mind and body to fight what he’s been through..
I hope he’s doing well by the way stay blessed 🙏🏻
The world stops to listen when this song comes on. My favorite in the whole world. I cry when I hear this .
Beautiful.
Unchained Melody isn't a group ,it isn't even 2 guys. It''s Bobby Hatfield all by himself with his amazing voice.
This is my Favourite performance ever. So happy to see some youngsters giving Bobby Hatfield his flowers...
I am 71.... and I listen to this music non-stop .. had it played at my wedding
This was my high-school sweetheart and my song.
We moved on but this song will never let me forget my innocent days.
One of the most beautiful songs ever made
They started as a garage band. My cousin knew them and sang with them back in the day. She also hung out with Tom Jones. 😂
It's beautiful...My favorite song in the whole wide world 💚💌
So very happy these youngins are hearing these great songs. They will live on !!! Makes my heart full. ❤
I was a sophomore in high school when this was released….it was played at every single school dance after its release. Best slow dance song EVER. 😊
This song is CLASSIC. It is without a doubt the best make out song EVER! You don’t hear music like this anymore. I’m so lucky to have been a teenager in the 60s when we had the best music.
No-one sings this like Bobby did. This is the definitive version.
Just that he was on an Aircraft Carrier
And something horrible happened. I still cry when I hear this song. I still wonder where he is.
Love seeing these young people seeing what REAL talent looks like.
This song came out by the Righteous Brother's in 1965. It was a hit. Then they put it in the movie Ghost and it became a hit for the second time.
But it was a cover song.
@@katthill7506 It was the Andy Williams show. The single was released in July and peaked in August before that October performance which is why Andy wanted him to sing it.
@@Aurora-tp3dy you're right.thanks
What a wonderful medley of reactions! Delightful to watch, and to hear. A great song for any generation.
NEVER underestimate a person who lived through the sixties and beyond. It was magic. Your granddaddy ROCKS!💕💕💕💕🇨🇦
The lip bite, it was a nervous habit. He supposedly said that right before he began he thought he was going to faint.
Pavarotti did the same at the end of a recording (live performance) of Nessun Dorma. He knew it was perfection
The song was written by the Bee Gees . It has been cover by my artist like Al Green in the 70's. Listen to the Bee Gees sing it. It one of their many hits.
@@caroljackson912 Unchained Melody was written by Alex North and Hy Zaret in 1955. Did you respond to the wrong song?
@@Aurora-tp3dyI hadn't heard that. They had also just done another song, had about a minute convo with Andy where he sounds out of breath before doing this song, was supposedly also under the weather, plus nervous becuz his mom was in audience seeing him live for first time. He nailed it.
This is beautiful! So much emotion. An oldie goldie!😢😊😮
The ladies swooning is the best part. They are getting absolutely swept off their feet by this Unchained Melody.
I love that the old songs/singers are being recognized and appreciated by new and younger generations! 🎶
Hope your Grandad is still doing well!
Now of course you have to listen to "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" to get them both singing. It'll knock your socks off!
I'm 70, and to this day I still get goosebumps every time I hear him sing this song.❤
