I don’t know how it triggers, but sometimes a lootbug just walks up to you, stops, and slowly inches its way into your personal space as you move around, eventually aggroing because you’re too close. If you try walking away before its aggroed it just follows you at roaming pace. In my 100+ hours i’ve only seen this behavior twice, so I don’t even know if its intended or not.

For soft aggro: lootbugs have an internal "annoyance meter" that increases by 0.2 for every 0.2 seconds that you're within 2.5 meters of them. If this value goes beyond 2.5, they'll attack. This value appears to be cumulative, and doesn't seem to ever reset, regardless of whether they attack, or had this meter increased by another player. Also, this does stack, so if 4 players are nearby, it'll increase by 0.8 every 0.2 seconds instead of 0.2. Also, note that the 0.2 second timer is constantly running, whether you're near them or not, so the first trigger can be faster or slower. Basically, all this means that, on average, it should take 2.5 cumulative seconds for them to trigger. Also, blocking line of sight for 2.5 seconds straight seems to be the requirement to get them to stop chasing, and they'll stop searching for you either after their aggro timer ends (listed below), or after 15 seconds, whichever happens first "soft aggro" should last for 3.25 seconds "hard aggro" should last for 18 seconds "super aggro" lasts forever, and is triggered by any player stealing any item, and can only be disabled by dropping all stolen items and allowing the hoarding bug to see it
This video was SO helpful. I always stand still when a lootbug wanders past me in an attempt to not scare them but they always get mad and try to kill me. Now I know that it's because I'm staying close to them for too long. (I was starting to think that all lootbugs had a grudge against me)

i think you should do an explanation of the bracken next, or just power level in general, because it is absolutely insane how the bracken room misconception is still a thing, plus, power level explanation can help you with spotting control company troll servers quicker, had several instances of impossible monster combinations on experimentations interior
I've checked the code to verify, and yes, lootbugs can hear. If they hear any sound within 15 meters of their nest, they will immediately go back into guard mode. Other creatures that can hear include the following: 1) Baboon Hawks: they check out sounds that they hear depending on distance, loudness, how distracted they are, and whether they're sleeping at their "base" or not (specifically, whether or not their eyes are closed for some odd reason). They also _do_ actually get scared by making loud noises, but only indirectly so. Nearly every creature in the game has an associated threat level. Normally, this value is constant, or only changes based on whether it's alive or not. However, in the case of the player, this threat system is quite complicated, and does include making loud noises. Only 5 items actually trigger the condition though, and not your voice, with those items being "noise maker props", of which only 5 exist in vanilla: the air horn, clown horn, cash register, and hair dryer 2) The slime: the slime can only hear the boombox 3) Jeb: every time he hears any noise other than an item being dropped, he will either track it in an internal counter, or become irritated. Currently, he will only become irritated by noise after he has opened the door, but there is a programmed possibility of a version/mood that gets angry with the door closed as well 4) Manticoils: if they hear a noise that's too loud, they'll alert nearby manticoils and all fly away 5) Masked: masked enemies will look at any location they hear noise coming from, but do not appear to actually change their movement based on it 6) Eyeless dogs: I don't think I need to explain this one. A neat note though is that, if a sound is too loud, they will instantly aggro, but it takes up to 10 instances of a quieter noise to make them aggro, but because they'll still walk towards it, you can use that to guide them away from a bad location 7) Spore lizards: just like masked's they'll look at noises they hear, but won't change their pathing based on it as a note: it seems like giant's were meant to be able to hear player speech, which would cause them to look at your position and possibly aggro onto you, but that feature was either cut, or isn't implemented due to some kind of technical issue
Also, Hoarder bugs can chase you in phase 1 roaming mode if you are carrying an item and if you get too close they will aggro and try to kill you then take that item once you die or you can drop the item for them to stop following you
When I was new I remember my first hoarding bug encounter. I thought he was super cute and I tried giving him my magnifying glass, but he didn’t take it, so I just explored.. the hoarding bug following me scared me and I ran away; ran literally into the nest full of hoarding bugs and I got destroyed😅
I'd love to see a giant AI video. Mainly because you showed loot bugs can hear, which people thought they couldn't, and people think giants can't hear but I am convinced they can. I swear if you crouch and don't speak you can go right next to them sometimes
Pretty much, they'll enter "Phase 2: Guarding stage" when they'll hear you around the nest, and it's cool that not only the Eyeless dogs are the only creatures that reacts to sounds
I thought an interesting role for the lootbug would be to present players with a risk / reward gamble -- when lootbugs hold onto items long enough they find a way to upgrade said item. They solve toy cubes, they open jars of pickles, they turbo-charge V style engines... Players don't know HOW they do it, they just have to question their team if they want to risk tracking down the cache to find a treasure trove of higher-quality items. Will they risk extra time (following the bug back to the cache), potentially getting lost (the cache should be in the deeper parts of the map), loss of life & limb (feisty lootbugs when you steal + more monsters the later in the day).
I think itd be neat if the bugs responded with Super-Agro (or a stronger form of agro) when all items are taken from Facility if theyve been made aware of that by roaming.
One of the most popular mods for this game is a simple sound byte replacement of their noise they make, replacing it with a loud "yippee" noise. So yeah, a lot of people agree with you.
Watching the lootbug just drop an item off into the pit while staring at the player is unreasonably funny to me. It's as though they did it just to spite us.
I'm pretty sure loot bugs know if you are looking at them, too! I've had it several times where I'm holding some loot like an apparatus and I can hear the bug following behind me for a while, but when I turn around it instantly goes another way. Might be coincidence, but I swear it's a thing
My idea for Lethal Company next generation: deep cave spelunking diving. Carefully watch your equipment, time, gather items in the scary, murky, dangerous tight tunnels, ravines.
It's a gamble, but normally yeah. If you can kill them and you're in a new area of the map, give them something so they lead you to their nest. It's great when they spawn in a fire exit storage room, they'll take everything they find to that room, and you can steal it and go outside with it.
Loot Bugs explained for cavemen: Loot Bug like cave bats, very annoying, get grok very angry. Loot bug very weak, weaker than false god Tarkus, easy to kill with big stick or shovel. Loot Bug steal grok shiny things, loot bug very greedy, more greedy than grok when he has shiny yellow rocks. Loot bug make nest just like cave rats, loot bug put grok shiny things in nest, don't steal back shiny things if many loot bugs. When Loot Bug is sent down by thunder god, Loot Bug will go to both side of metal cave many time until find loot, then bring loot to nest ust like cave rat finding food. If grok go near nest, loot bug stand there and not attack until you steal. Loot Bug not dancing though.
I think you should do the bracken next, because I always have trouble when it comes to how long to look at him to get him to walk away. Also nice find I had no idea they could hear me.👍
stolen from a reddit post about the bracken AI: "For simplicity reasons imagine it like this: For every second you look at the bracken a 6 sided dice is rolled. At the first roll the attack value to roll is a 7 - impossible to roll. The next second the dice gets rolled again, now with a attack value of 6 - so after 2 seconds you have a 1 in 6 chance he will attack. Every second this target value lowers by one, until it is 1, at which no matter what was rolled the attack value is reached and he goes in for the kill."
5:53 minor note, but they don't deal 10 damage when critically injured. you took 10 damage because the game sets your health to 5 if you take less than 50 damage and aren't already critically injured. note that the game displays critical injury when you go below 20 health, but you get critically injured when you go below 10 health. both are reset when you go back up to 20 health.
Take a moment to read this: I can’t remember which map we were on, but me and my two other friends were playing, one and i inside the building searching for loot, the other staying behind at the ship. Us two that went inside had little to no luck retrieving loot, since the rest of the building was through this one door, blocked by a web and guarded by the spider. However, a lootbug was roaming about us, even at one point getting a little aggressive but then goes back to roaming- however as my friend and i are discussing how to get past the web AND the spider, the lootbug continuously enters that area and brings loot back to us. Like, it even watches us take the look and dump it outside without attacking. A lot in this video does make sense, but that one incident is now strange to me. It’s like the lootbug was intentionally bringing us the items, or to its “nest” which just so happened to be right outside that doorway. And it watched us take the items it brought to the “nest”, and was still passive. It can be brushed off as a glitch sure but… maybe there’s a slight chance of a friendly/helpful lootbug?
super agro is perhaps not as super as you suggest. while i have totally seen them go back to phase 1 and permanently be buzzing, they can still de agro. i do not known the cause of this, but i have stolen items from a lootbug nest and then after 2~ trips of hauling they have chilled out and dont attack me anymore. i have even seen it happen where you steal a item from them while they are guarding or in LOS and they simply opt to not fight you and return to/stay in phase 1
Additional notes: cute, “YIPPEE!”, seem to use a “humming bird” motion in there wings which keeps them up with there much larger body compared to wings.
With all the other actually dangerous monsters around this one gave me the worst jumpscare, i was entering a room and this mf comes around the corner with the loud YIPEE........
They fill the role of a weaker enemy well, but these guys are trivially easy to kill in any decently sized room. You can hit them for free when they are not aggro'd, and they will basically always miss their first dash due to being slow, so hitting them again for the final blow is also easy in most cases as well. I think they are only an issue if you don't kill them on your terms, which means they can be hunting you down a long hallway, but even then, you can easily trade blows and kill multiple of them due to their low damage.
Love the videos. Playing 3 days ago, I’m the shovel guy of our squad. I noticed each time I bonked loot bug, it attacked my buddy near me instead of me. Each time I had to shout to my buddies to run back to me so I can finish the kill. Was it just coincidence they went for my buddies and not me each time?
Makes sense, I do a little back up after my whack, which puts me a bit of distance, and I don't think my allies often have spatial awareness lol@@alteregosocial

4) Manticoils: if they hear a noise that's too loud, they'll alert nearby manticoils and all fly away
5) Masked: masked enemies will look at any location they hear noise coming from, but do not appear to actually change their movement based on it
6) Eyeless dogs: I don't think I need to explain this one. A neat note though is that, if a sound is too loud, they will instantly aggro, but it takes up to 10 instances of a quieter noise to make them aggro, but because they'll still walk towards it, you can use that to guide them away from a bad location
7) Spore lizards: just like masked's they'll look at noises they hear, but won't change their pathing based on it
as a note: it seems like giant's were meant to be able to hear player speech, which would cause them to look at your position and possibly aggro onto you, but that feature was either cut, or isn't implemented due to some kind of technical issue

I think itd be neat if the bugs responded with Super-Agro (or a stronger form of agro) when all items are taken from Facility if theyve been made aware of that by roaming.
I like how they're more offended by stolen strap than attack.
Dude out here doing some damn research to help us figure out what is happening. I applaud your efforts.
thank you!
I honestly think the hoarding bug is super cute
Yippee! Now i know their every move. How they will act, and what they do.
YIPPEEE
Am I the only one who thinks these things are kinda cute? They're just wandering around, collecting shiny things they like. I find that adorable.
From my experience, i very specifically remember killing one lootbug and when others spawn, they immediately are agro.
You probably took an item from it's nest which would potentially super aggro all the other lootbugs sharing it
Happy to see this video ❤️ Please keep doing these!!
pls make roaming locust ai next
i think this would break the internet
Cannot wait for more. Keep up the good work!
My idea for Lethal Company next generation: deep cave spelunking diving.
Carefully watch your equipment, time, gather items in the scary, murky, dangerous tight tunnels, ravines.
0:16 “if I can’t have it, no one can!” Ahh lootbug 😭😭😭
I still remember I was playing with a air horn and a hoarding bug was following me
Is tracking loot bugs and finding their nest a viable strategy?
It's a gamble, but normally yeah. If you can kill them and you're in a new area of the map, give them something so they lead you to their nest.
It's great when they spawn in a fire exit storage room, they'll take everything they find to that room, and you can steal it and go outside with it.
So thats how all of us died when we spotted exactly 20 or 10 lootbugs in their nest waiting to kill unsuspecting people to open the door
Loot Bugs explained for cavemen:
Loot Bug like cave bats, very annoying, get grok very angry. Loot Bug not dancing though.
thank you for the confirmation!
I think you should do the bracken next, because I always have trouble when it comes to how long to look at him to get him to walk away. Also nice find I had no idea they could hear me.👍
stolen from a reddit post about the bracken AI:
"For simplicity reasons imagine it like this:
For every second you look at the bracken a 6 sided dice is rolled.
At the first roll the attack value to roll is a 7 - impossible to roll.
The next second the dice gets rolled again, now with a attack value of 6 - so after 2 seconds you have a 1 in 6 chance he will attack. Every second this target value lowers by one, until it is 1, at which no matter what was rolled the attack value is reached and he goes in for the kill."
bracken vid just came out!
Everyone is so fascinated by the Yippee bug. It's the main reason lethal content exist lol
Take a moment to read this:
I can’t remember which map we were on, but me and my two other friends were playing, one and i inside the building searching for loot, the other staying behind at the ship.
Dont mess whit the bug mafia, they also need to fill the quota
After most of those who was being hunted was found they developed bugs to hoard items near where people were hiding of course this backfired quickly
super agro is perhaps not as super as you suggest.
while i have totally seen them go back to phase 1 and permanently be buzzing, they can still de agro.
i do not known the cause of this, but i have stolen items from a lootbug nest and then after 2~ trips of hauling they have chilled out and dont attack me anymore.
i have even seen it happen where you steal a item from them while they are guarding or in LOS and they simply opt to not fight you and return to/stay in phase 1
I always wished you could trade with lootbugs or “hire” them to carry stuff to the ship for you
for some reason, as of v56, they started to die in 3 hits instead. i dont know why but i would like to know
This is such a good channel ❤
Best thing to do: give a holding bug (yippie bug) a boom box
Lootbugs? This isn’t DRG!
Additional notes: cute, “YIPPEE!”, seem to use a “humming bird” motion in there wings which keeps them up with there much larger body compared to wings.
"Its just standing there staring at my soul"
My beard grows 2cm every time he says "loot bug" instead of "hoarding bug" and I also get 2cm shorter
And I thought that bracken has the most complex behaviour in the game.
In my experience it takes them a second or two to open doors while agro but that might be wrong
Please do a video on the Coilhead AI next. I really want to know what its roaming patterns are like and how it finds you before being seen.
the order will likely go:
Spore Lizards
Brackens
Thumpers
Coilheads
pro tip: use colored lines and pictures and stuff while editing the video so we can see the creatures better instead of just seeing some pixels
Only in fiction people will find an over sized cockroach cute
Now I know all there is to know right now about my favourite little cuddly bugs!
I choose not to watch these videos to not water down my experience but commenting for retention
real one fr
0:16 poor guy 😭
I tried a solo run of Lethal Company. Got jumpscared by a Loot Bug, quit right there.
I do ship duty for a reason…
Lootbugs value loot more than their life lol
Love the videos. Playing 3 days ago, I’m the shovel guy of our squad. I noticed each time I bonked loot bug, it attacked my buddy near me instead of me. Each time I had to shout to my buddies to run back to me so I can finish the kill. Was it just coincidence they went for my buddies and not me each time?
i believe they go after the closest player when aggro’d!
Makes sense, I do a little back up after my whack, which puts me a bit of distance, and I don't think my allies often have spatial awareness lol@@alteregosocial
The best Lethal Company ai explaining. Where did you get this information from? I’m assuming you got the values from the code, which I, myself is doing. But where did you get all of this other information from? Testing?
yes all info from this vid was testing
