Every once in a while I come across a unique kind of channel that is right up my alley, that I could binge endlessly no matter the subject at hand, only to find that it is criminally underrated and in it's pilot season. Game review channels are such a staple of UA-cam at this point that most of them just feel like IGN but with a slightly different dude. It's an understandably formulaic genre, but the way you inject your humor into it effortlessly without being obnoxiously "insert-funny-meme-clip" is just perfect, while still leaving space for well-paced, thoughtful, and comprehensive analysis. Details like hazards being functionally identical and the dichotomy of player-made tracks are things I never saw any other review mention. This is the best game review I've seen in a while, hope there's more to come, and that your channel grows to greater heights.
The beginning of the video gave me a bad feeling about it, but I am relieved to see how positive the review is, this is great :) also, coin grind tracks stopped working a long time ago because they added a check that will give you 0 coins if the track is too short, but in that same update they made winning give you more coins in general
Something I love about this game is actually the expansions - the new environments and pieces for the track builder are great additions, and being able to play them online allows you to choose specific things to purchase if you don’t want to post for the entire expansion.

Got this for free from PS+ a couple of months ago. A nice surprise as I am a HW collector and I looked at picking up a copy when I found it on sale. I now have the platinum trophy. I liked the game and it feels really good when you nail down the driving techniques. Winning online is always satisfying. And some shortcuts are really enjoyable to hit. I did have to turn off the music after a couple of sessions, I prefer no music when I’m racing though. It’s also a bit grindy to get the last trophies.
Played the game since day 1. Was super stoked about it since the first reveal trailer as it felt like a more simple F-Zero. Took me about 4 months to completly obtain and upgrade all base game vehicles. And somehow, it felt oddly satisfying.
p.s. there are few other things that suck not mentioned in this Correct review: physics is defective - you may slide right on a ramp and for no reason then fly left - very unnatural. Nice review. Couple of quick questions. How have you found the difficulty? I read some people say it was unbalanced so races were either too easy or too hard. Secondly, how easy would it be for young children to play? Are there decent accessibility options for novice gamers?
Thanks for watching, great questions. Difficulty is interesting here as there's a lot of variance. Not all cars are made equal so it'll feel way worse if you haven't upgraded or your car sucks. In a fully upgraded Jesko, which I believe to be fairly high-tier, Hard was a sweet spot where I needed to be on my A-game and mistakes were punished by falling at least one position. I felt like Medium was a good entry point, but has a bit of a difficulty spike moving to Hard. Easy was insultingly so - you can basically ignore boosting as a mechanic. That seems to be the core of the AI's handicap as I never saw them boost on Easy. I didn't mess with Extreme because I felt like Hard was right where I wanted things to be. I don't have a kid to find out with, but if you can't plop em in front of Mario Kart for whatever reason this feels like a good substitute. The tracks and cars can probably keep their attention, and while there's no auto-steer or anything controls are simple enough that they can probably at least hobble through on easy if they don't gel with all the systems.
If you ever get the chance, check out some of my tracks that I made. I've been having a blast with the track editor, and I've made a bunch of tracks that emphasize spatial awareness, movement mastery, and probably a big controversial aspect that I love: speed management. Go too fast, and you fly off the track. Go too slow, and you won't be able to make the jump and your opponents will be passing you left and right. There's little to almost no obstacles on the track, with the only sort of track additions being booster strips, boost pads, accelerator strips, and the occasional magnet strip. All of my tracks were designed to be big, beautiful, speedy spectacles for a full multiplayer lobby to enjoy, be it a public lobby or a private one with friends.
As a kid I played the hell out of stunt track racer and have always enjoyed racing games since but never been much of a gamer. When Is aw this come out it sat on my wishlist. Then it finally went on sale for cheap and I bought it. I am very happy with it. I think I paid about $30 for the ultimate version or whatever and at that price its great. Lots of content to put time into. Had I paid full price I would not be as happy. The only things I wish there was more of is car customization but not like Forza. Just let me upgrade my speed and acceleration instead of random things all at once. But still its great.
I bought this game just for the track editor. I like to create things like Mario Levels (SMM1 and SMM2) and even race tracks. I tried TrackMania Turbo and ModNation Racers but the track editors felt complicated to me. This track editor feels good to create race tracks with it. I don't race online on PS4 because i don't even have PS+ to do so and it's not required for just track creation. That means the lootbox thing doesn't effect me aswell but for those it does i can feel the pain. I never had Hot Wheels as a child but a small Carrera race course instead. But the courses i want to create are more in the style of F-ZERO that means no Spider or Snake stuff. I am on of the people who want to recreate F-ZERO courses. LUL Oh and some other ones aswell. LUL The only thing that might require the use of coins for me is if the devs decide to implement purchasable race track parts.
I actually just gave myself a bunch of coins using cheat engine and got everything I wanted, since my fun came from driving and not grinding for LB I don't feel like I missed out in anything
I don't feel like I can advocate for using CE, but I can see how that eliminates the issue of chasing your next box. I did something similar with reputation in Mass Effect and found it really freeing to be able to do what I want instead of having dialogue locked behind Paragon or Renegade score.
There just doesn't feel like their is enough content in it and the monetization is terrible if you didn't buy the game on launch too bad you missed out on a racing season and the season pass 3 isn't in ultimate stunt edition and the battle passes are not included and what is the point of playing with a dumpster truck when its so slow there should of been a class system and why do you make content limited in a AAA game and I mean the expansions are not worth for how much they are it should of been 2 maps per season pass
nice review, my favorite thing about the game is definitely how solid racing is, something i think could be better is car customization, and what this game needs is a better selection of cars. looking at all of the dlc and racing seasons cars makes me wonder, who was this game made for? hot wheels fans, kids, comic book readers, street fighter players?
The 3rd theme you've showed off is my favorite in the whole game. Shame the tracks don't have actual names, so I call it "Leading the Way!". My fan-made names are all Hot Wheels related, or at the very least have Hot Wheels references.
Search on youtube the game Horizon Chase Turbo, it's super fun to play, is a homage to 80s/90s arcade racing games and the progress is super nice and still challenging (and no microtransactions).
Was excited once the HW was coming out & once I got it, but man this game is disappointing honestly. It lacks personality and atmosphere. It didn’t have any chaos like HW Beat That on the Wii, courses were bland, same 3 OSTs playing on repeat (glad Spotify made it better) can’t believe we have 5 rooms in here. Expected to have more parts of a area like Beat That. Sure you can buy it to waste time but long term, not worth it. It feels like you are owning an NFT (never own one before but I know how people describe it to be). Also they really hate Deoras.
21$ is what this games launch price should be, honestly i had fun with it, racing is pretty good but it gets boring really fast. they also just added crossplay but as far as i know it's only for xbox and playstation. dlc is just awful, too much character cars for too much money. you're honestly better off either getting the hot wheels expansion for forza or mario kart 8Ds expansion
Ironically, distance has a LOT of acceleracers maps. And a lot of hotwheels, fzero, etc. maps. Would love if you redid the distance review, but this time covering the more mechanically complex levels. And doing the legacy campaign and ''The other side'' (which I saw you had unlocked). The other side shows how distance is not really a ''racing'' game in the traditional sense.
I'm assuming it used to not be possible to earn coins from re-running map races and Quick Races because I've seen that a lot in videos. It's still grindy but at least you don't have to exploit multiplayer any more. Also, I'm on PS2 so your mileage (heh) may vary. And I love getting Super Treasure Hunt. The first one I unlocked got me most of the way through the game. Oh, and the cars are way more varied than you might think. If you get stuck like I did, check a top 10 list. You won't regret it. Honestly my most disliked feature of the game is the time trials. Difficulty has no effect on that, so you need a good car.
Let me add my tips for maxing out coin usage. - First, as another reviewer said, beat the story mode first. However, you're not going to beat story mode without some good cars. So pick up Super Treasure Hunt cars as soon as you can. And if you want to make a little extra effort, find out what cars are gift cars from the story mode and if you see a car that isn't on that list, buy it. Especially if it is in a top ten list. - On PS4, at least, you can find cars that are free in the Playstation Store. Buy then all! - Open all the loot boxes you earn in story mode. If you don't have the car, use it. - If you get a duplicate, then if it's a Rare or Legendary, sell it. It's worth one new loot box for a Rare, or two for a Legendary. - If it's a Common, you earned it in story mode, and it's a duplicate, you can sell it or dismantle it, your choice. I would recommend dismantle since you will need the gears to upgrade the top ten cars that are Common or Rare, but if you'd rather try for more pulls you should get plenty of gears below. - If you BUY a loot box, always dismantle it if it's a duplicate and Common. You will lose money if you sell it. - You should always sell Rare and Legendary duplicates, whether you bought the loot box or not. You'll always get at least one more "pull". - Buy every Common or Legendary Super Treasure Hunt you see, even if they're a duplicate. You'll get 4 more pulls for selling it. (You can buy a Legendary Super Treasure Hunt too, but you'll just break even) - If you mess up and buy a car that is given as a gift in story mode, try not to upgrade it. When you get the gift version dismantle the original, don't sell it. You will lose money in almost every case. (If you got it from a free loot box you can sell it, but you'd have to make a note of where it came from. Best to just take the gears) - It's okay to use the shop and ignore loot boxes unless you get them in story mode. But I personally only buy Legendary (and STH of course) and ignore Common and Rare unless I like them. If you're going for trophies you will want to open loot boxes, so try and get the best value out of them. It's about 50-50 for Common, but every Rare you get out of a loot box saves you 700 coins. Legendary too, but if you've only got a few left to fill out your collection the chances are probably better that they'll show up in the shop. - Check multiple top ten lists. Everyone's going to have different favorites. - Oh and the way to find out if the last entry is a Super Treasure Hunt is to view it. (Triangle on PS4) The price will be 500 or 1200 for Common or Rare but you may miss a STH if you see the 2000 and assume it's just Legendary. It should always be the last entry though.
I wondered if they will do more with the game? I played multiplayer for 5 months. Very fun. Only sad part I only got to play my track 1 time in multiplayer. Was fun though. I have an other track I wanted to test in multiplayer. But it has 0 likes. Used 3 days to make it... Then I made a track in 10 min and got 7 likes lol. Also I don't known why, but I played more Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Or at least the same amount. Probably because there's always full lobbies and its less serious. But I rarely use weapons. But its gives it more action and balance. HotWheels Unleashed could have more boost if you fall far behind maybe.
Mate, when you talked about what different kinds of racing games there are nowadays you forgot the wipeout-likes. You know, Pacer, ballisticng, the original wipeout.
I may hold off of the game for now and buy it at a late date or get it as a gift. that loot box situation is a turn off but god the racing and cars look cool
As of me making this comment Hot Wheels Unleashed now has a "Game of the Year Edition". All it is is just the base game with all the expansions, DLC, and whatnot. Buying it standalone will cost you $90 but if you already own the game, you can upgrade to the GOTY Edition for $45. I still think that Hot Wheels Unleashed is a great game, but I know for a fact that it could've been so much more. Also.... What was the point of announcing a Stadia port? Google's going to be shutting that thing down in less than 4 months. What was the plan, Milestone?
Thanks for asking. The short answer is that I'm basic. The long answer is a two-parter. As far as gameplay goes, I'm deeply in the arcade racing camp. Some people really get into tuning and realistic driving (I know Horizon is pretty simcade but bear with me), but I just like to go vroom. I can tell FH5 is a well-made game, I'm just not the right audience for it. As far as the live service aspect of it, I don't like when games vault, time-limit, or otherwise lock stuff away from the player. That puts me at odds with a lot of seasonal content, and FH5 is probably the second-worst offender I've played.
@@serothel hey man relaax, i wont defend turn10tards one iota🤣 They shafted me and many many others on FH3...for whatever reasons my FH2 and FH3 plus paid dlc just up and dissapeared from my xbox account🤷♂️🤷♂️ Poof over night game doesnt exit anymore It was the last good game they released.....they went down hill hard Took the EA approach i rekn🤣🤣🤣 Saying that ill probs end up getting fh5 for the hotwheels stuff on steams wintersale what a hypocrit hey🤣 Bcoz i see this hot wheels game footage and im thinking dang that looks reaaallly basic with nice visuals but also it looks like car choice is pure cosmetic🤷♂️ PLOT TWIST i frikn luuvvv Grid Legends i rekn they nailed that game by todays standards that is
@@serothel and the live service thing yep i get it 100%, unlockable content should never locked you out because you have other priorities, find a workaround like oh you missed it, pay 2X in game currency? Make it available in 7-14 days later? Either way itll fulfil the purpose of companies "trying" to get ppl playing more hours on there product
@@MadLadMartyMcFly85 The worst I've played is Halo Infinite. I know there's worse out there, but weekly challenges, event twitch drops, and a time-limited store is a lot. I try not to look at it as bashing, just calling out bad business. I think most devs want happy players because they know that's the key to success, just sometimes they lose track of the big picture.
Honestly, as a guy who already has put 100hrs in the game, just buy em in the shop, so you won't have to gamble with RNG and waste a shit ton of coins.
Just bought the GOTY edition for $20....great game...colle ting the cars is addictive af... BUT....the swinging boulder, dynamite, spiders just ruin certain levels...one of the worst things I've ever seen in a videogame
After tons and tons of racing games played i can finally say I only really enjoy racing games that are 100% arcade based, or racing games that are car combat based. Onrush is the most recent one That i still play today that is an absolute blast to play. Its literally like a 70/30 car combat/racing game with a team based point systems/ objective to win that never involves actually crossing a finish line. The most fun ive had with a racer, and its a damn shame more people didnt pick it up. The only others I seem to enjoy is a good cart racer i.e. Crash Team Tacing, and then car combat i.e. Twisted Metal "another ip that is in desperate of an hd remake for its wonderful ps1 titles. Or a full blown new ps4/ps5 game. Realistic racers are just too boring, and slow. i can't see how anyone would enjoy them in the same way i can't understand people who play sports games. The real life thing is so boring to watch, but id rather go outside and play soccer or baseball with friends than slog through it on a screen.
yeah i dont know why people like realistic sports games but i can get behind realistic racing games as well as fun kart racers, my poor ass certainly isn't gonna afford a corvette or ferrari in this lifetime.
So we gonna ignore the fact they could of made a fire ass acceleracer game with going through loops into the wheel of power and then the track.. Instead of this bs 💔😩

That intro!!!!
*Would you talk about Trail Out Game next month?*
I'm here because this game is free on PS+ this month.
Watching this because of the Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels DLC. What are your opinions on that one? I wanted to ask this on a HW:U video.. i'm curious
Amazing review.
I can say
The music is
When you ask 2010 skrillex to make music for kids racing games with 50 dollar budget
The track in the beginning, dont even go up the ramp just drive to the left and you hit the finish
LUL
The only thing that might require the use of coins for me is if the devs decide to implement purchasable race track parts.
Is there a feature for others to play tracks created by other gamers? Like a gallery or something?
Next up for me, Monster Jam Showdown
what game is that 0:35
I actually just gave myself a bunch of coins using cheat engine and got everything I wanted, since my fun came from driving and not grinding for LB I don't feel like I missed out in anything
I don't feel like I can advocate for using CE, but I can see how that eliminates the issue of chasing your next box. I did something similar with reputation in Mass Effect and found it really freeing to be able to do what I want instead of having dialogue locked behind Paragon or Renegade score.
There just doesn't feel like their is enough content in it and the monetization is terrible if you didn't buy the game on launch too bad you missed out on a racing season and the season pass 3 isn't in ultimate stunt edition and the battle passes are not included and what is the point of playing with a dumpster truck when its so slow there should of been a class system and why do you make content limited in a AAA game and I mean the expansions are not worth for how much they are it should of been 2 maps per season pass
dlc is an absolute ripoff and not enough actual hot wheels just crap character cars
Idk I just listen to either the acceleracers soundtrack or fast rave music when I play
nice review, my favorite thing about the game is definitely how solid racing is, something i think could be better is car customization, and what this game needs is a better selection of cars. looking at all of the dlc and racing seasons cars makes me wonder, who was this game made for? hot wheels fans, kids, comic book readers, street fighter players?
but i feel like that hot wheels tho. they had all types of cars for ever license at some point
The 3rd theme you've showed off is my favorite in the whole game. Shame the tracks don't have actual names, so I call it "Leading the Way!". My fan-made names are all Hot Wheels related, or at the very least have Hot Wheels references.
You can avoid the spider. When approaching, approach at a certain angle, any angle. Then as you come up on it, swerve to another direction.
i just stick to the wall, the web gets destroyed before it touches the ground
Excellent video :)
Thank you! :)
I've been playing this game since release and this review was spot on.
Those Burnout 3 takedown references are golden 😭🤣🤣🤣
Works pretty great on Xbox one x. Coming from turbo racing back on PSX, this was a nice surprise
love this game
this looks like a fun game lol
Most of the times when I wanted a car I actually hated driving it. Guess I just like my old faithful cars
The review is pretty good
Search on youtube the game Horizon Chase Turbo, it's super fun to play, is a homage to 80s/90s arcade racing games and the progress is super nice and still challenging (and no microtransactions).
I built a PC because of this game..
only to find out it doesn't support rtx 💀
I'm curious if you tried any of the simcade racers like Grid or Grid Legends. With realistic cars, but more fun handling.
I haven't, but knowing that they've got more arcade handling puts them on my radar. I'll check them out!
Does anyone else feel like the drifting is off in the game? Like I’d rather have a handbrake than just a normal brake but that’s just me
I need to find a review where the person has also played Hot Wheels: Beat That! for ps2 and xbox
Ultimate Edition for 21 bucks, should I get it? 🤔
Literally watching the video for the same answer, I've been waiting for a solid sale on this game
(You can buy a Legendary Super Treasure Hunt too, but you'll just break even)
- If you mess up and buy a car that is given as a gift in story mode, try not to upgrade it. When you get the gift version dismantle the original, don't sell it. You will lose money in almost every case. (If you got it from a free loot box you can sell it, but you'd have to make a note of where it came from. Best to just take the gears)
- It's okay to use the shop and ignore loot boxes unless you get them in story mode.
I really like it, toy cars what's not to love?
character cars, limited customization, overpriced dlc, afk players, boring challenges, stupid battle pass, nothing much really.
I think its BS that some of the time attacks cannot be done without short cutting the track.
thank kind of car guy...lol
You know, Pacer, ballisticng, the original wipeout.
come back turbo sperg i muss u
Why dont you play fh5?
Proper curious
@@serothel hey man relaax, i wont defend turn10tards one iota🤣
They shafted me and many many others on FH3...for whatever reasons my FH2 and FH3 plus paid dlc just up and dissapeared from my xbox account🤷♂️🤷♂️
Poof over night game doesnt exit anymore
It was the last good game they released.....they went down hill hard Took the EA approach i rekn🤣🤣🤣
Saying that ill probs end up getting fh5 for the hotwheels stuff on steams wintersale what a hypocrit hey🤣
Bcoz i see this hot wheels game footage and im thinking dang that looks reaaallly basic with nice visuals but also it looks like car choice is pure cosmetic🤷♂️
PLOT TWIST i frikn luuvvv Grid Legends i rekn they nailed that game by todays standards that is
@@serothel and the live service thing yep i get it 100%, unlockable content should never locked you out because you have other priorities, find a workaround like oh you missed it, pay 2X in game currency? Make it available in 7-14 days later?
Either way itll fulfil the purpose of companies "trying" to get ppl playing more hours on there product
@@serothel whats your worst offender? Bash these companies🤣🤣
Lootboxes really ruins this.
They made the economy way better now im earning like 525 coins every race i do
After tons and tons of racing games played i can finally say I only really enjoy racing games that are 100% arcade based, or racing games that are car combat based. The real life thing is so boring to watch, but id rather go outside and play soccer or baseball with friends than slog through it on a screen.
yeah i dont know why people like realistic sports games but i can get behind realistic racing games as well as fun kart racers, my poor ass certainly isn't gonna afford a corvette or ferrari in this lifetime.
rip
Play redout 2
The main reason most people play Forza is for the Anime girls decal. It's the only thing Hotwheel lacks to be a great game.
i've been playing hot wheels and i can tell you with 100% certainty that your wrong, there are plenty of anime girl decals
False
So we gonna ignore the fact they could of made a fire ass acceleracer game with going through loops into the wheel of power and then the track.. Instead of this bs 💔😩
Volume 2 DLC made from a fun game a disgusting experience. Tracks in volume 2 are awful.
You trippin it's hotwheels in every corner we want to see the logo !!!! I fuck with your video I love this game and spent money on it very happy but they ending it idk whyyyyyyy!!!
I bought this game because it's the closest to a new f-zero we're ever going to get. Yeah I said it 😆
check out redout 2
I’m not wealthy, Warhammer 40K gets me wettt.
Bewst
The fact that you have talked trash specifically about the joker car has earned you a thumbs down on this video.
