Why Hoboken Is Obsessed With This Roast Beef Sandwich | Legendary Eats

- Founded in 1913, Fiore's House of Quality specializes in classic Italian deli food, including heros, paninos, and other sandwiches without defined characterizations. One specialty at Fiore's is its "roast beef and mutz" hero, which is doused in gravy and has a roast beef to "mutz" ratio that is mostly "mutz." Speaking of "mutz" - Fiore's makes theirs in-house everyday.
Also, if you used to watch NBC’s '30 Rock,' this sandwich might look familiar: It was featured on season 2 episode 14 "Sandwich Day," where Liz Lemon had to scarf down the entire hero at airport security, after its container of gravy was deemed over the 3 oz limit. We go to Fiore's and interview the current owner, John Amato Sr., and customers about why this sandwich is so coveted.

That intern was an actual, walking Wall Street trope.
That's exactly what I thought

Lmao the interns on a mission for food for the entire office, some things never change 😂
Bites the corner of the sandwich where it’s mostly bread: “uugghhh so good” hahaha
white girls always do that
That bread do look banging
@@thedredgod a lot of white chicks like bread sometimes by itself

Lmao so true, but to be fair bro every inch of that sandwich is insane
If I ever hear anyone irl calling mozzarella “mots”, I will drown them.
I thought you said down them then I looked back and saw drown them, got damn
She’s not even saying mots she’s saying muts lol
how about "mozzerell"?
She's actually saying mutz... and read the video description and Google the damn word.
American Italians butcher every single Italian word. It’s mozzarella. Not mozzarel, not moz, not mutz, it’s Mozzarella.
This “mutts” thing is driving me bananas
Dontt you mean "nutts?"
Read the video description and Google the word mutz.
We did, we're not stupid. We just know that mozzarella shouldn't be disrespected by calling it the same word as a mixed-breed DOG. "Mutz" is nails on a chalkboard level cringe, don't go dying on a stupid hill just to feel right for once lmaoooo
A phony foodie will always say mutts in an attempt to seem cool
The amount of people who say it that way are only from Jerzy. Not once in Italy did I EVER hear anyone mispronounce it that way.
No one is going to mention how many times this girl said mutts? 🤷🏻♂️
I watched the whole video just to see if shed say it more
It’s infuriating
That doesn’t infuriate me as much as how she lacks pronouncing her T’s 😡🤬
She's a mutt.
i can't even pay attention to the sandwich she sounds so dumb. lol
the sending the interns over an hour to hoboken to pick up sandwiches is such a wall street thing to do
I always thought these sandwiches were overhyped….UNTIL I HAD ONE! The bread, the cheese and the meat are all delicious on their own and the au jus just brings it all home. Funniest part is that I don’t usually care for roast beef sandwiches but this one I will eat every chance I get. If you’re ever in Hudson County stop in Hoboken!!
Cangiano's, and Andrea Salumeria are great eats in JC. Fiore's is great in Hoboken. These great places are all over Jersey
Yea had sandwiches like these in Europe. It looks bland and boring, but quality ingredients just take it to the next level.
that sandwich look soooooo good if it $10 or $15 for a foot long of roost beef & that cheese with gravy must be worth it
If you're ever in Hudson City, stop by Hoboken? That makes no sense. That's like saying if you're ever in Florida, make sure to stop by Indiana. What are you talking about?
“Since 1903”.... as the camera pans to the logo that says 1913 LMAO
Looks like we have a time traveler here.
That was a typo, and said forget it

@@magical11 Sure, theres always bad actors in everything, but A. These aren't burger stands, theyre rich companies. Like the one that sent these 3 for the sandwiches.
And B. No-one is twisting their arms behind their backs. If there wasnt something of value to be had from being an intern, no one would show up for the gig.
Wall Street is mostly paid interns!
I must agree with the guy at the end. I took for granted being close to this place as well as soo many other eateries like this one. But now that I’ve retired and moved away, how I miss it. Whenever I’m back in this area I try to get to each and every place to remind me what I miss. Of course I go back home a few pounds heavier, but it’s worth it.
Now that looks like the type of sandwich I could sink my teeth into! Roast beef with cheese sounds simple enough but with a good hard roll and the right seasoning makes it into something that is so good to eat. My mouth is drooling. I love a properly made Reuben but this could really knkck it to second place. Thanks for the video.
This comment made me miss working at my old restaurant. Those were my 2 orders I always got for free by doing the chef's sidework lol.
I'm not surprised. My parents used to take me from Brooklyn to Hoboken for these heros. They're delicious.

I live in Brooklyn my whole life and there used to be 100's of Italian deli's around but this place has the best fresh mozzarella i ever had
The simplest of food is always the best. Beef with old jew, mozz, and good bread. Absolutely delicious.
Here in Western NY. We have beef on a kimmelweck, beef on a weck. You get the point. It's beef cooked in au jus, on a hard roll dusted with course salt and caraway seeds with some horseradish to slather on top of the beef. Simple yet delicious.
Old Jew?
@@yurbeeinwatched Too funny!
"Au jus" is a French culinary term meaning "with juice". It refers to meat dishes prepared or served together with a light broth or gravy, made from the fluids secreted by the meat as it is cooked. In French cuisine, cooking is a natural way to enhance the flavour of dishes, mainly chicken, veal, and lamb. In American cuisine, the term is mostly used to refer to a light sauce for beef recipes, which may be served with the food or placed on the side for dipping.
@@johnereilly1 It's better when it's made by an old Jew though.
i couldn’t watch the whole video because she kept saying mutts instead of mozzarella
Cuz she's nutts.
That's what they call it at Fiore's
@@KikiRevenge No they called it mozz not mutts. She needed to listen harder in her local fit in class. LOL
Pretty sure it's spelled mutz in Hoboken!
Same here
I've had the fortune to live right accross the street of Fiore's. The sandwhich is just divine.
That looks amazing!
I grew up with this place. My dad was born in Hoboken and had the family business there and went to Fiores since he was a kid in the 30s. The mozzarella and Parmesan cheese was the best.
Parmesan or Parmigiano?
When I worked in Jersey City a few years ago, a few of us from the office would make the short trip to Fiore's. I loved the roast beef and mozzarella, topped with roasted red peppers and then have the "dip" the entire thing in the gravy.
Now I'm out west, and long for another taste from my favorite Hoboken deli.

Life long NY'er, i've had amazing sandwiches from great spots all over the metropolitan area. Please understand the magnitude when i say that absolutely nothing...not a single other sandwich comes close to how good this one is. You'll be hard pressed to not wait on a line...but it is beyond worth it.
katz’s?
@@pet3590 LOL, please. Kats' is fine. It used to be way better 20 years ago, before they started overcharging and the became less consistent with quality of the cuts you'd get in your sandwich (fat to meat ratio is way off now). But even in their heyday, Katz's pastrami as much as i love it doesn't hold a candle to this sandwich.
Ok..I'm in canada but lived in Bayonne...really touched to make me remember how much I miss it....They dont know italian here
This is the single greatest sandwich I've ever had. Ever.
I’ve never had the sandwich but living most of my life in NJ, these simple sandwiches are the best. It’s not just the sandwich, which I’m sure is good, it’s where you get it, the atmosphere the people. I would go just for that and love that sandwich.

NJ? Nadia Jose?
The sandwich from 30 rock is from defonte's in Red Hook. They explicitly say it's from a deli in Brooklyn. Idk why people insist it's from Fiore's in New Jersey...

U.S. Immigration Timeline
Attitudes and laws around U.S. immigration have vacillated between welcoming and restrictive since the country's beginning.
The United States has long been considered a nation of immigrants. Attitudes toward new immigrants by those who came before have vacillated between welcoming and exclusionary over the years.
Thousands of years before Europeans began crossing the vast Atlantic by ship and settling en masse, the first immigrants arrived in North America and the land that would later become the United States. They were Native American ancestors who crossed a narrow spit of land connecting Asia to North America some 20,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age.
By the early 1600s, communities of European immigrants dotted the Eastern seaboard, including the Spanish in Florida, the British in New England and Virginia, the Dutch in New York, and the Swedes in Delaware. Some, including the Pilgrims and Puritans, came for religious freedom. Many sought greater economic opportunities. Still others, including hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans, arrived in America against their will.
Below are the events that have shaped the turbulent history of immigration in the United States since its birth.

In Jersey, especially Hoboken, people usually call mozzarella "Mutz". So she pronounces it right. If u have ever been in Hoboken, you knew that.
