Portugal's Most Iconic Sandwich Is Smothered In Cheese And Sauce | Legendary Eats

- The Francesinha was invented in the 1950s at a Porto restaurant called A Regaleira, when a French customer asked for a croque monsieur. This indulgent sandwich now has many variations, but they all include a stack of ham, steak, sausage, and cheese, covered in a tangy tomato sauce. We visited Cafe Santiago, who makes Francesinhas beloved by locals and tourists alike, to see how the iconic sandwich is made.

Speaking as a local, Santiago is definetly NOT the locals' favorite to eat a francesinha. If you ask most people in the city they will name a lot of different places, and Santiago is hardly ever mentioned. That restaurant has become mostly directed to serving tourists, but any person who has only ever eaten a francesinha from Santiago hasn't really tasted a true francesinha.
a little side note: they mention that they took out the spiciness of the sauce which is basically killing the dish; a good francesinha has to have a little bit of spice in it, otherwise might as well be simply called a wet sandwich
