    My father had a house at Chautauqua, right behind Norton Hall. We had a Highlander class sailboat on the lake. Many fun summers there working at the Athenaeum, till I joined the Navy in 1964.

    Thanks Leland for documenting these beautiful places and venues. But even more so kindly chatting with people as you walk outside the venues. Today's best one liner is " Tonite's the one that counts" shows dedication to the performance quality and that attendees know their gonna get 100% at the concert. I know that 'Me time' is a precious thing on the road and many days we get tired of talking. But you taking a brief moment to chat with those who say hello or ask a question, gives the general public a touch of the tour reality and that performers are not 'Stars' as in the ego sense of the word but normal people too. You are doing quite the PR and giving many here the real insights into touring at this level via these videos. Very much appreciated !

    Either going to church on Sunday, or a concert @ this venue! It almost looks like a small private University village inside that quadrangle with that park... I've been to the Chautauqua in Boulder CO which is a similar type of layout, though i don't remember it being quite as large as the original looks here.
      I also always get this confused with Chappaqua, that suburb north of NYC where Bill and Hillary live, but they are at completely opposite ends of the state!

    • @borisgalos6967
      @borisgalos6967 2 роки тому +4

      @@TFinSF The Boulder Chautauqua was a spinoff of the original where Lee is today. At its peak, Chautauqua was the source for adult education in the US with mail order book clubs and a traveling show that would go around the country with lecturers and concerts. Many states still have a Chautauqua which was originally their venue for the annual traveling show.

    My stepfather had a summer "cottage" (actually a lovely Victorian he winterized) just a stone's throw from the Amphitheater . Spent some time there, many years in fact. Lots of great times and concerts. The Amp was entirely rebuilt about 12 years ago. The audience area/seats are just the same but the backstage areas for the artists were expanded and improved. Had not seen till this video. A unique culteral art center, so lovely! Thank you so much!

    • @wno1043
      @wno1043 2 роки тому +1

      Actually, it's been only 6 years since the Amp was torn down and rebuilt. I have photos from 2016, September, at the start of the demo. They had it completed and ready for the 2017 season. The entire Amp except for the organ chamber was demolished. It was dug out to make it deeper, and as you noted, the rear of the Amp was completely expanded. It looks very much like the old Amp except for the rear.

    This is a wonderful venue. The setting amongst the homes and the overall cleanliness is what makes this stand out. As a Canadian,I really love the patriotism Americans show off in towns like this. You don’t see that here where I live. The flags with the different coloured homes and unique roadways are beautiful.

    Chautauqua NY is one of the most beautiful performance and arts complexes in the country ! The Chautauqua movement started as a cultural learning and arts gathering where artists and lecturers well known in their fields would gather for several weeks of events . Chautauquas later spread westward with many constructing summer cabin communties. Some of which still exist. The remaining ones still thrive such as the Boulder Chautauqua in Colorado. On a high hill and meadow is the historic acoustically beautiful all wood Chautauqua Auditorium venue in a setting that nature outdid herself in creating.

    Leland: I so look forwarded to your daily videos. It is always a pleasure to see Lyle, what an authentic human being. Chautauqua, New York is a most interesting place to call home, some truly amazing homes. Quite a lovely and huge pipe organ at the venue.. Chris Isaak is a true, " Rhinestone Cowboy" performer.

    My wife worked her way through college as a maid at the Atheneum Hotel! 10,000 Maniacs are from that area.

    Yes! My first thought was of Martha's Vinyard Tabernacle! All the people walking around - friendly people - lots of bikes.
    Made me think of the Hollies song "Look Through Any Window":
    "Oh, you can see the little children
    All around
    Oh, you can see the little ladies
    In their gowns when you
    Look through any window, yeah
    What do you see
    Smiling faces all around
    Rushin' through the busy town"
    (But not so much rushing in this town)
    So Cool!

    Geez, I was enjoying watching this and then got notice about the terrible attack on Salman Rushdie at Chautauqua. It's such a beautiful, peaceful, and unique place. To have that calm viciously disrupted is depressing.
    Glad you got to have a great visit. I know all the spots you were walking around, filming, and really enjoyed seeing them again.

    People think of New York as being just the NYC metro area, yet there is so much more across upstate NY northern NY, the Catskills Mnts, the Adirondack Mnts, central NY - finger lakes region, Western NY and it’s Southern-tier, St Lawrence Seaway, Thousand Islands, the Erie Canal going east-2-west, etc.
    Lived 25 of my 60 yrs in central NY, between Syracuse and Rochester metro areas - great people, beautiful country, nice quality of life
