Repost from Aug 2017
What is Apocalyptic science fiction? this is quite a misunderstood sub-genre that even Google gets wrong at times (and demonetized this when it was 1st released). Unlike Post-Apocalyptic sci-fi where it follows after a disaster. Apocalyptic is set just before or during a potential threat (Extinction, end of the world etc)- such as an impact event or nuclear warfare where the fate of humanity is uncertain. To be honest its very similar to disaster movies, where the main difference is apocalyptic is based around people who don't have a solution to the problem, while disaster actually focuses on attempts to avert or escape the problem.

This is a re-release from 2017 that got shut-down by the UA-cams! Nice to have it bk up again.
Will be soon up to old numbers ;-) What went wrong?
Quite a lot of my videos get "yellow demonetized" aka don't get views, don't generate income. So they literally die. This was on YT for over 2 years... generated $0.40 and gained 4-20 views a month. I mean it will do better in the next 24 hours, than it's entire lifespan.
@@Hyperdriveuk So keep them coming.:-) Would be a shame that such videos with this production quality would fade into oblivion.
Disaster movie: something bad happens to some people.
Apocalyptic movie: something life-threatening happening to all of the people.
Colossus, that was a childhood favourite. Though watching as an adult it's short comings are noticeable I'd certainly still recommend it to fans of intelligent science fiction.
I see Prince of Darkness, I click. Thanks, good work.
I see you like Logan's Run as well. Nice.
MoarRushPl0x Yeah, cheesy 70’s sci-fi, but i never realized that when I fell in love with it as a kid
Night of the Comet is soooo DOPE!!!!
Yeah I really like it, no-one ever talks about it, which is a shame as it's got some fun ideas.
Melancholia was strangely hypnotic, stuck with me for ages.
Yep, one of my all time fav, the world is doomed and their is nothing you can do about it movies... Come to think about it... it's fits the cosmic horror genre quite nicely.
"The Divide" (2011) was actually pretty good, at least from a psychological point of view. It's a heavy and bleak film and for some reason has abysmal ratings on rottentomatoes.
I have to say RT is very inconsistent with it's reviews. I usually go for IMDB, as you can at least look at the scores for your demographic etc which can be very telling.
"These final hours" is good, fits in this list I think
I've seen a few on the list. Wouldn't have ever expected to see Melancholia. I wouldn't be spoiling it by saying the world ends at the end. But you want to believe everything will turn out okay.
More
Thank you for counting Miracle Mile, Night of the Comet and Prince of Darkness!
All three are IMO very underrated and need more love.
I believe that one would be very hard pressed to produce a better similar film like the outstanding Shaun of the dead.
I honestly have no clue how you could reproduce something of that caliber without just copying it.
„Shawn of the Dead“ is a great movie, not apocalyptic though, in the sense that humanity doesn‘t end and/or there is no postapocalytic outcome, „The World’s End“ would have been a better suggestion if you wanna stay with Edgar Wright, you also have forgotten about „This is the End“ and imo also „Dr. Strangelove“ falls in the same category
Edgar Wright has nothing to do with "This Is The End"; you may be thinking of "The World's End", 3rd film of Wright's Cornetto trilogy.
I would say that "Shaun Of The Dead" fits the theme of the list, though, since the apocalypse is averted offscreen, by characters we never see. It's a very tight and personal apocalypse story, with the few references to anything outside of the main cast's lives coming as TV news reports that they're not very interested in.
Derpimus Maximus Well you should read my comment again to see your error, and about Shawn of the Dead, the aversion of the apocalypse is the reason i don‘t think it’s fitting, imo it doesn‘t matter if it’s offscreen or not, but maybe we just have different ideas of the category
@@Madigan1984 Evidently we do.
@Madigan that's an interesting point I want to go further into at some point- I guess that's why I set up my own subreddit. As I find most people have their own personal definitions and expectations for certain genres. The amount of times I get someone saying... this list has no cosmic horror, or tech-noir etc... I'm just face palming every other day lol.
HyperDrive I don‘t want to be the guy who puts everything into boxes, I just think that apocalyptic fiction has to end with the world, humanity or civilization „ending“, however, I didn‘t create the term or have any authority to set the rules, as I said it‘s just my opinion, in any case thanks for your work and content, always enjoy it
Recommending the BBC-movie "Threats" from 1985. A very effective movie about the nuclear apocalypse, that makes great use of it's limited effects, especially in the sound department.
It's Threads ;) but yeah, that one gave me nightmares.
See, I was wondering about that, but too lazy to look it up. It's also listed 1984 on IMDB. ;-) It's one of my favourites, so incredibly tense.
But I haven't seen all the recommendations on this list, so looking forward to those. Always a delight to discover new gems like "Threads". ;-)
Surprised Prince of Darkness was the choice over In The Mouth of Madness... In my opinion one of the best apocalyptic films.
Seeking a friend for the end of the world is actually a really good romantic comedy apocalypse movie and I genuinely enjoy it
Children of Men I believe is the best one..
Yeah I can't disagree- was thinking of making another one of these- but the original was shut down because of the word "Apocalyptic" so if this one turns out to be ok, will do another.
I love this movie, it REALLY is underrated
Night of the comet is burned into my memory since I saw it as a kid, so it must be the best One. Such a Charming fun film.
It's a classic!
Oh yeah, my favorite listing in UA-cam is back!!!!
Miracle Mile is perfect 10/10 watch it now!
For me it's enough for an apocalyptic film to deal with people or themes where it has been given up on hope.
Disaster movies is about a big event happening, often very quickly. If the event is big enough and happens over a long enough period of time, these kinds of stories might also be apocalyptic.
No love for Threads, the most terrifying apocalypse film going.
How come no one seems to ever seems to remember 2 of my favorites:
#1) the POSTMAN, and
#2) WATERWORLD.
Another video masterclass.
Miracle mile - when you continuously get angry with an stupid character until it get full sayadin
Actually I'd take The Day the Earth Caught Fire over Forbidden Planet any day. Not because FP's a bad film, not at all, I just find TDTECF more interesting and engaging.
TDTECF just rolls of the tongue doesn't it!
Planet Terror rocks. Quentin never disappoints.
I was going to suggest Miracle Mile but you beat me to it! 👍🏽
Colossus, the Forbin project is 10/10 for me :)
Were I a famous actor or musician I would totally want to be in a film (or 2) in this genre and the Zombie genre. Actually regardless of my invisibility, I'd still like too :)
If anybody loves these movies check out, These Final Hours, Threads, The Day After, Before The Fall (2008), seeking a friend for the end of the world, greenland, the divide, I think I got most, but I love movies like this alot. Esp when they are done realistically,
In all of Carpenter's movies he's in, Donald Pleasence always plays such hopelessly desperate characters. Or desperately hopeless. He totally hams up the victimhood better than anybody.
Also "The Quiet Earth" ! But a strong selection otherwise ;-)
Check out - The Quiet Earth
Great movie!
@@Hyperdriveuk Ha, you've seen it! I should have know... I'll try harder next time 😂
The 1998 Canadian film Last Night is a good one
TImely! Thanks! :)
It's just an oldy.. you can tell by the terrible audio lol! But hopefully you like the movies suggested!
@@Hyperdriveuk Saw prob half of them already so yes, great suggestions. Going to revisit Shaun of the Dead, didn't like it the first time..I"m not generally a fan of comedy/horror (Tucker and Dale vs Evil being an exception)..and a few here I haven't seen, will check out if I can.
The only thing I didn't like about Prince Of Darkness was that it didn't have Ozzy Osbourne.
5:16 what could go wrong :p
spoiler - after colossus the forbin project fails, they created an app version called forbyn
lol
the Winchester
I’ll keep requesting it: CyberPrep.
So high tech, high life... a bit like star trek?
HyperDrive Star Trek, Astro Boy, that weird world from Next Gen, and such. Thanks for all your dope work!
How was Threads not in this list!
I don't know lol! There are loads of movies that I didn't pick. I usually watch around 20+ films and then make a selection via different processes... like how popular it is, its date... or if I plan to do a part 2 etc.
@@Hyperdriveuk Threads stands out as one of the most harrowing films I've ever seen. In that cold war era it must have put a lot of people in the psyc ward!
Night of the comet is grade A
Melancholia, the only watchable Lars von Trier film?
Well, I wouldn't go that far as I love pretty much all his work. But to the average film enthusiast, most appear not to have the patience for him.
@@Hyperdriveuk Perhaps I was being too harsh for comedic effect as I though Breaking the Waves was interesting. But nothing will ever entice me to watch Antichrist or (shudders) Dancer In the Dark again.
No "Last Night" but includes 80's cheesefest "Night of the Comit"? Fail.
