What is Action sci-fi? Well technically speaking it isn’t a sub-genre of science fiction, but as long as a movie’s core element is sci-fi then it can cross into other genres such as drama or action.
Action sci-fi became very popular in the aftermath of the Star Wars franchise so from the 80s onwards we got spoilt, with a great selection of good sci-fi films with action and bad action movies with a sci-fi skin.

I would seriously consider Soldier starring Kurt Russell. Awesome action in a sci-fi setting.
The "Spiritual successor" to Blade Runner? Nice. I probably would've gone with either Universal Soldier 1, or Cyborg. Both forgotten Van Damme classics.
Other Action Sci-fi I would recommend The Matrix, V for Vendetta, T2, Iron Man & District 9 . Want to support my channel, please go to www.patreon.com/user?u=5540784.
HyperDrive, How would you define the movie, Bunraku, with Kevin McKidd?
Definetely Dredd. Really well made.
The original Tron has a special place in my heart. I love the comedic aspect of Galaxy Quest.
Robot Jox is also worth checking out!
Next video should be about revenge movies.
A few of my own suggestions.
Escape From New York
Logan's Run
The Last Starfighter
The Hidden
Slither
Equilibrium
Enemy Mine (Is that action? It was slow in places)
Demolition Man
The Black Hole (I hesitate to recommend this one. It's one of my personal favorites though)
Maximum Overdrive (Sci-fi action/horror)
Pitch Black (And Riddick franchise)
Universal Soldier
Time Cop
The Ice Pirates (Not for everyone. An acquired taste)
Screamers
Tank Girl
Battle Beyond the Stars (Campy but essential to the origins of sci-fi action I think)
Turbo Kid (If you like 80's twisted campy sci-fi action this is a 2015 throwback to that. It works IMO)
Johnny Mnemonic (Again, this one is not for everyone. But I liked it)
Flash Gordon was a childhood favorite.
Speaking of childhood favorites D.A.R.Y.L and
Explorers (The ending notwithstanding)
Judge Dredd (1995) version
Cyborg
The One
Outlander 2008 (This one I found surprisingly good)
Freejack (Emilio Esteves before Young Guns fame)
The 6th Day (Not Swartzenegger's best known, but it was decent flick)
Jumper (Was flawed, but still worth a watch)
Time Rider (Loads of 80's fun. If you like Remo Williams The Adventure Begins, Time Rider is a bastard cousin)
Cherry 2000
The Core (Full of implausibility and impracticality. But fun IMO)
Hollow Man
Damnation Alley
Lost In Space the 90's version (Hey I'm not saying they're all totally awesome. But it's scif-fi action)
Black Moon Rising (Okay listen, it's a sci-fi action. Back in 1986 that car was science fiction. Watch this one for the cast of actors too. Watch the trailer and you'll see what I mean)
Trying to decide whether Weird Science was science fiction action or fantasy action.
My Science Project
The Philadelphia Experiment
Hell Comes To Frogtown (Sigh, there I said it)
Ultraviolet
The Eliminators (No seriously don't watch this one. I warned you. Don't even peak at the trailer. They have a mandriod)
Wing Commander (I'm going to put my rep on the line here and say there are aspects of this movie I liked)
After The Fall Of New York (is set in the far flung future of 2019. So there's that)
Circuitry Man ( is a hot mess. But you'll spot little known and used B actors and actresses and be all nostalgic.)
Dollman (Hey look, it was a legitimate sci-fi action movie. So it makes this list)
Slipstream 1989 (Had Mark Hamil, Bill Paxton how could it go wrong with them? Well, it did. But it's sci-fi action so there it is)
Project Shadowchaser 1993. (Picture a half ass version of Die Hard, and the bad guy is a terminator)
Planet Terror (There is a scene where a woman is raped by a giant slug, or something. Which haunted me as a child, mostly because I was watching it with my parents when that scene happened and my mom started yelling to "Turn it off!!!" Joanie Loves Chachi. Watch the trailer and you'll see what I mean.
That's it I'm going to bed.

I read more than I watch films. I make it a point to see as many films based on a book no matter the genre. There has never been a film maker and screen writer that didn't chew the source material, squat, and shit out something they called by the same name.
Probably the truest adaptation of source material I've ever seen was the UK version of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Which was a radio broadcast and then a book then a mini series. Even then the new version of the film managed to be a thin shadow of the original source material that fell flat. Also I forgot to put that on this list because technically it IS sci-fi/action.
It is Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann in case you go looking for it.
I got curious and the Blu-ray on Amazon is $87.
The Last Starfighter is an absolute classic. It’s a Masterpiece.
Look at the views! Told you bro this is your market we got you. Great stuff.
“Running Man” is the perfect kind of “bad” movie. It’s SO much fun, and never takes itself seriously. I also recently rewatched “Westworld” (yes, after the TV show, which is fantastic) and it’s even better than I remember. Yul Brynner is the most unlikely badass since Liam Neeson.
I love that movie
Yul Brynner was really epic in the role of a robot. Great movie.
I'd recommend Demolition Man. I'm not much a fan of cheesy films, but the cheese in this film works perfectly. It's got great action scenes, a unique story, and two hammy, yet somehow still work, performances by Stallone and Stipes. And it does what a lot of films strive for, but fail to deliver,, in that's it's fun from start to finish. It's one of those "just sit back and enjoy the ride" type films.
Great content as usual. Rollerball and Robocop traumatised me to no end in my childhood. I should rewatch them!
Great collection of films. Seen and enjoyed nearly all of them.
Dune, albeit flawed in places, and a production tragedy, is one of my favourites; great cast and sets.
Outstanding selections; well done!
"Outland" was a retelling of "High Noon". 1952 Gary Cooper Classic.
I look forward to your videos immensely :)
Great choice, and loving the always improving look and feel of the content. So difficult not to put obvious classics like blade runner in there, and total recall.
I have to say, that was one of the harder selections to make- there are so many well known ones! thx for the feedbk TK :-D
More movies to add to the rental que... Seriously love these videos!
THEY LIVE!
Yeah, some real classics in there. Good vid.
cheers
Thank you for another great video!
Great list, great vid, my man, keep it up!
cheers!
Good list with some of the classics!
What about Dredd? . Fun fact: Robocop started out as a Judge Dredd movie that was altered a lot.
I'd definitely go for the Karl Urban Dredd over the Sly Stalone stinker. I just wish the latter had the budget of the former.
Roger Morris Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I loved Dredd and regard it as one of my all time favourite movies.
The Robocop Dredd link is in fact completely false. Where are you getting your information from? It's not correct.
Because when I think Action Sci-Fi, I totally think Dune...lol. Dune will put most people to sleep. It's good, but it's more like watching Shakespeare. Also... "I won't be including obvious movies" *includes Robocop*
There is a fair amount of action in Dune.. its no commando- but its by no means Shakespeare either! Includes robocop "However I will put in a few popular films, just to keep people happy" I did say!
HyperDrive - I would have saved Dune for a "Space Opera" video. Liked and Subscribed. Action Sci-Fi Recommendation: Hunter Prey
you should have a label of the movies you are using in the intro clips. Lots of cool looking scenes I have no idea what movies they belong to.
Nice recommendations, I think you've really found your niche. In the long run though, these videos might be more and more difficult to make.
Yes with time, I'll use every type- there's a lot of content, but just not sci-fi only.
I dunno' if I'd called _Outland_ an action film really. The action sequences are very slick and extremely well directed, but they're a very small part of the film really. More like a firm underscore, if you know what I mean.
Great film though
OMG DUNE IS SO GOOD!!! SUCH A WONDERFUL 80S FILM!!! It was only a bomb because people expected Star Wars, but Dune is so much more and so much more depth
If you're looking for list ideas, how about great man vs. environment movies? I'm always a sucker for 1 or 2 people trying to survive under some extreme circumstances (127 Hours, Wrecked, etc.).
Keep up the great work!
Good idea thanx , so like docudramas based on RL or fiction as well?
Terrific list. All worthy movies.
Great choices!
Outland is underrated. I've thought of it as a good story possibly set in the same CU as 1979's "Alien."
Moon 44 ... Roland Emmerich’s first movie is also a long forgotten but decent action sci-fi flick.
Nice List.
Great movies. Watched them all. Action Sci-Fi is my favorit movie genre!
I like the newer version of Rollerball more. I watched it first time 2002, first night on Saint Lucia on TV. Later I bought the James Caan version on DVD in Kuala Lumpur, thinking it was the one, I saw in 2002. BB on DVD in Malaysia as well. Running Man on VCD in HK. Dune on DVD in Poland. When traveling, I don't buy souvenirs. Movies are my souvenirs of places.
It was strange seeing green 4:3 computer screens in Outland, set in the future.
Thanks for making and uploading this video. I'm hitting the subscribe button.
I watched all of these movies as soon as they came out, and enjoyed them all. DUNE is my favorite from the list. I can't seem to skip past it no matter what else is on. My favorite flub is when the guild navigator is coming in the throne room and one of his entourage in the full helmet and long coat trips face first (screen left).
@2:35 That's the guy who fell into that toxic waste in Robocop.
Would you consider doing one like, "Best B Movie Sci Fi"?
yes!
HyperDrive Reanimator and The Mist! There's so many great B Movies
Some of these are more classified as Cyberpunk but... Good list. I should watch the Adventures of Bucaroo for sure..
There are a lot of cross overs, but action sci-fi isn't technically a sub-genre.
I love Outland. It's a good crime mystery set in space. Sounds awesome to me.
can't wait to see what denis villeneuve will do with the dune remake. lynch's dune doesn't satisfy me at all, it satisfies me a lot more the one from jodorowsky, and that it's not even a movie but a documentary...
Good list, all good movies-the originals you mentioned here, not the re-makes.
Nailed it! I've seen every movie here!
I agree with David Green below about David Lynch's "Dune" but will take it a step further. That movie is a masterpiece!
Automatic like. Anything off of here is gold.
Cheers Captain Hardluck!
Outland reminds me of The Expanse tv show
Questions for the group for things I haven't seen:
How was the remake if rollerball?
Is the westworld series any good?
You forgot "Escape from New York".
"Snaaaaake Plissken, I heard you were dead." as spoken by The Duke (Isaac Hayes).
Popular films make people happy? I'm hoping for movies I haven't seen and so far I've seen rollerball and the remake. Second one... doesn't make me wanna see it.. Robocop is a huge classic and very popular. Or at least is with people my age and older. (35) The reboot... Didn't like it. Buckaroo Bonzai is a cult hit and one of my very special DVDs I had before everything was stolen from me. Running man is another classic that... I have a hard time rewatching. The documentary on what Dune was going to be rather than the hodge podge thrown together film that got made. I liked the sci-fi remake better. Pacific Rim.. Huge hit, sequel is coming out soon. I hope this last one is an interesting one I haven't seen or forgot about and liked. .. Damn.. Westworld... And okay it's like a jurassic park with cowboys instead of jurassic park. It's a movie my father liked, that I wish he wouldn't watch so much when I was younger.
Damn.. I was in a mood for a good sci-fi action movie I haven't seen yet or simply avoided. Buckaroo Bonzai and that Sean Connery one were the most obscure. But out of all of these, I'd recommend Buckaroo Bonzai for a goofy sci fi action comedy romp that's very unique. Rock n Roll scientists saving the world! I'm thinking I need to make a channel like this, maybe put my childhood with a father who owned a movie rental store to good use. I just deleted 10 suggestions that are obscure sci-fi movies that I believe a lot of people missed but got praise when it was until it was eclipesed by a blockbuster. That happens a lot and is sad. There's a lot of interesting directors and actors who never made it because a big blockbuster that took over all screens made a lot of films have limited runs and seem like straight to video mess.
SnowPiercer. That's semi-recent. More obscure than quite a few on this list, there's still a lot of people who haven't seen it and it's a sci-fi masterpiece. And don't get me started on foriegn films. :P
You make some good point, I think with time I will make some really quirky lists- but I found action sci-fi was mainly made up of the more popular films. I think you should make your own channel, I honest try to encourage people like yourself to start one. I'm curious to see what you pick for genres like this.
Logan's Run is ONE OF THE BEST.
Also consider The Last Starfighter (1984). An obvious Star Wars ripoff but still a good movie.
I was hoping for something more obscure. I've seen all of these.
I might do something like that in the future- obscure lists, I don't put many Asian films in atm, and haven't really been touching lower budget content.
Every movie on the list is one of my favorites lol!
Any word on a live action Space Dandy film or series ? THAT would be awesome !
I'm among the few who liked Lynch's Dune with all it's impenetrability. I think most people got more out of the the TV miniseries
Really not keen on you including Pacific Rim, especially when Dredd was excluded, but otherwise, I would happily watch any of these right now.
As an aside, Outland is a lot like Event Horizon: criminally underrated.
There's a video exploring the idea that Outland is set in the Alien universe...
Rollerball is one of my favorites Films i have the DVD 👍.
Hey dude, hate to tell you this but Outland isn't supposed to be original. It's supposed to be High Noon in space
Rollerball 1975, This is really good.
Outland 1981, This is really good.
Robocop 1987, This is good if you're in the mood for it.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), I thought this was silly
The Running Man (1987), This is OK.
Dune (1984), This is worth watching
Pacific Rim (2013), I don't like Mech's as the technology isn't viable. They weight to much and would sink into the ground because they don't have tracks distributing the weight.
WestWorld (1973) This is good.
.
Bob Smith thanks for the advice
@@VALIS538 No problem.
.
Yeah, Dune is certainly... a movie. It's flaws mainly stem from the fact that the source material is incredibly dense, and therefore difficult to adapt into a single movie, and more recent mini-series type adaptations have fared little better.
This list is fucking excellent
I love Rollerball.
Pitch Black comes to mind. The only really decent film that Vin Diesel has starred in.
Good fillms
Outland is well made but is just high noon in space.
For your information, "The Running Man" is just a rip-off from Yve Boisset's "Le prix du danger" ("The prize of peril"). Boisset successfully sued "The running man" production for plagiarism.
Outland is High Noon in outer space.
Total Recall (the Arnie version)
Aliens
RoboCop
District 9
Westworld
Fortress
Terminator
Predator
Precious Find
Serenity
Out land is a great movie !
Why is everyone with an opinion about movies always wants to toss out the one that made a lot of money and lots of people went to see? What is it about lots of people paying to go see a film that always reduces its "artfulness " and toss it off the list of "top 8/9/10" movies? We're not lemmings following movie critics off the cliff. We already pick the good movies we voted with our money.
Did... did you say 2019?
Outland... High noon in space, based on the western.
Yes, its not too bad- if I were to do a sci-fi cowboy theme, that would be in it for sure.
What's the movie at 0:27?
Looks like Jean-Claude Van Damme. Cyborg?
Because of RoboCop I am still waiting for my 6000 SUX. 😀
pacific rim "weapon" reminds me of Evangelions weapons
Pacific Rim was quite clearly inspired by the Evangelion franchise.
You do a video on sci-fi short stories here on youtube. There are a lot to choose from and many are excellent, especially the stuff from Oats studios
westworld the hbo show is really good also
You left out *_HARDWARE_* (1990) ??? 😮
How is that an action movie?
David Lyncher? I think you just combined two people.
LOL they're my favourite director!
Make a new genre , DEATH RACE 2000 , plus CHERRY2000 , ECT .
Nate and Hayes
Says "I will avoid the obvious ones" then lists Robocop... Facepalm...
"Nonetheless I will put in a few popular films, just to keep people happy. " I did say ;-)
Pacific Rim is the best Godzilla movie.
The Last Starfighter? Total ripoff of Star Wars, but it's a lot of fun. Plus the computer graphics were revolutionary, jumped movie special effects ahead with computer genersted 3d objects being portrayed.
Pacific Rim!?
if you like 90s/early 2000s films?? maybe thats an idea?
Ya I might try something like that- sci-fi from a particular time frame!
Why would you make videos on what makes them happy instead of what you’d want to put in the list, bowing to the norm 😭
Don't watch Dune movie..read the books ,movie is a miss ..books are Sci Fi masterpiece that 90% of scifi authors draw inspiration from.
DUNE, Fucking *DUNE*. Oh my god. That movie has the WORST pacing and acting. The soundtrack is far from cheesy (its downright shit) its fucking bipolar when it comes to following the book going from downright verbatim to including elements and plot devices not even found in the movie. (The weirding modules anyone) It left out key, KEY plot elements. And Baron Harkonnen is by far the worst one. In the book he is an evil monster of a human being who doesn't give a damn about human life. In the movie. He's Floating Baron Von Spooky pants who does the occasional evil thing.
Well, its kinda put everything in a one video click bate
You have way too much time on your hands but a jobs a job I guess.
Why put in some popular movies to keep some cry babies happy.
How about we all learn how to pronounce "nuclear" and NOT say noocular?
Where are you from? -noo-klee-er, is the American way
Doesn't matter where I'm from. I'm a linguist. Noo-klee-er is the proper way regardless of dialect. Plain and simple. Some point out that noocular has been used so often by ignorant people that it's become a de facto accepted pronunciation, but they all denote that it's regarded as wrong by a lot of people and it DEFINITELY connotes ignorance.
It's derived from nucleus. Are you seriously trying to argue that Brits pronounce that "nooculus" because I've never heard anyone say that. Get it right.
Pacific Rim is just another could of been, turned into a stupid B movie...
I just love it for the scene with the Russians fighting... pity it doesn't go on for long.
Rollerball is a fucking bore of a movie. Wasn't impressed.
Outland is a slow movie but it's decent, more a thriller movie and not at all action. It has rather good set design, feels like industrial sci-fi like you saw in the first Alien movie.
Robocop?? Really? Why is it in this list, surely everyone has seen it. It's a masterpiece, one of the 80s action classics.
Buckaroo Banzai is a love it or hate it kind of movie....I hated it. Couldn't interest me for one bit.
Running Man, a small Arnold classic with Arnold at his ace game when it comes to one liners.
Dune, again a love it or hate it movie, very long, very weird.....I love it. It has a unique visual style.
Pacific Rim, same as Robocop, it's too big for this list. Everyone seen it. It's a good movie.
Westworld, another slow 70s movie but it's very imganitive and the western setting is pretty good. Ignore the sequel Futureworld.
