    Now Lovecraftian horror is, unfortunately, a somewhat cursed sub-genre. As it's films are primarily made by, enthusiasts, or influential directors who have little to work with due to budget constraints. However, while a lot of the movies this week aren't precisely what I would call big-budget blockbusters or loved by critics. I know that at least they will hopefully be appreciated by you guys. Oh and as a side note I'm restricting the number of movies directed by Stuart Gordon to two. Otherwise, I would be forced to rename this video to 7 Stuart Gordon movies featuring the works of HP Lovecraft!

      I think it represents the very goal he was trying to accomplish with his writings. To drive his readers into a state of pure madness. The antagonist is himself an amalgamation of both Stephen king and H.P. Lovecraft. John Carpenter does a good job of capturing aspects of both in the story. I watch it religiously almost every month, that and event horizon.

      I had given up on horror long ago after bad cgi, torture porn and jump scares took over. It seems I missed out on some older movies here which should have been impossible but I went through a rough patch I guess. I'll be checking out these movies and From Beyond. The last okay horror movie I seen was Open Graves. I made the mistake of watching Brightburn. I found it to be cruel torture porn. The Boys ( a t.v. show) does a better job of super heroes being jerks, it can be gruesome but it has that over the top vibe I like. I thought good horror and horror as art had died out so I switched to surrealism Mr. No Body, What Dreams May Come, Ruben Brandt the Collector, Loving Vincent, A Scanner Darkly ect. I hope I can come home to good horror, we shall see.

      @homegrowntwinkie 4 роки тому +7

      no. just.... no. that movie was hot garbage. plot that makes no sense, visuals that suck, it's definitely a try-hard and I've seen entirely too many people recommend it, and the only thing I can think is that you don't actually know what good film is, or potentially have ADHD like the creators of The Void did.
      It tried to have a deep story with multiple levels and tied up into a neat little basket at the end, but.... Literally nothing gets concluded by the end, and the director is hoping you're just so baffled that you forget about the other plot points. Truly a terrible excuse for a Lovecraft film.

    • @hyperbole1009
      @hyperbole1009 4 роки тому +13

      homegrowntwinkie Excuse me? The Void works great as a Lovecraftian Horror, perhaps a bit more gory than necessary, but nonetheless absolutely perfect. Just because the plot makes no sense doesn’t make it bad because it’s not supposed to: the enigma codes are endless which is vital for a Cosmic Horror Movie. The Void is the epitome of Lovecraftian Films. We follow a protagonist who knows nothing of the nature of the Void and as he slowly learns so do we. Remember, when we watch media we are an outward force looking into a new atmosphere, sometimes familiar but with alien qualities. We follow a protagonist, who like us, knows nothing but we watch the plot unfold together simultaneously, exactly like a Lovecraftian Horror Novella. That was such a strategic move that works so well for the film. The reoccurring imagery of the Sinister Black Triangle which is always there but conveys no meaning is so perfect. We know it’s something to fear so we fear it but with no conscious justification on why we should fear it, but simply because we have an instinctive compulsion to fear it, like the characters. In other words, to the normal person, the knowledge of the nature of the Void is unknown but our bodies still sense it because, in essence, it is always there, it’s another dimension that surrounds us and flows through our universe simultaneously but we just can’t perceive it, like From Beyond (The Lovecraft Novella). Speaking of which, have you read much of Lovecraft’s work? Do you understand the point of his work? The plots barely make any sense because it’s not meant to be comprehended by the reader who is presumably a human. Therefore the Void is watched like one would read one of Lovecraft’s book, the mythos used though is a far more modern interpretation of cosmic horror but still upholds the same values and ideals imposed by Cosmicism. It’s truly a Lovecraftian masterpiece and if you cannot appreciate it then you must be blind to the key concepts that makes the Void the most accurate of Lovecraftian Media.

      Yup. I thought their Call of Cthulhu was better, but still enjoyed it very much. They even took pains to film the New England scenes here in New England. Glad to see you included the HPLHS's take on "Whisperer in Darkness"! Beautifully crafted, especially considering it was an AMATEUR film - truly a labor of love. I didn't like it as much as their previous effort, "The Call of Cthulhu", but it really does show you that sometimes less is more.
    Also agree that "The Resurrected" is one of the better commercial adaptions of HPL, or at least one of the most honest. The music was a little intrusive at times, but the storyline hewed fairly closely to the original, and the makeup & puppetry were properly grotesque & disturbing. I thought some of the rock-jawed acting by the protagonist a bit over the top, but overall I'd say this film was better than most of its kind.

    I saw "The Haunted Palace" first-run at the Malco on Main Street in Memphis, Tennessee. It's typical 1960's Roger Corman drive-in fodder, a pastiche of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P Lovecraft. The plot is loosely derived from "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" (making Curwen almost a sympathetic character!) but the title is from the Poe poem. In fact, the official advertised title of the film is "Edgar Allan Poe's The Haunted Palace." Corman believed that most of the appeal of a movie is in the title, since often that's all you see in the movie ads; and his target audience would get the implication since they were forced to read Poe in high school. But then, Poe and Lovecraft were pretty much kindred spirits; both were pretty much public domain; and neither was around to sue.
    On the plus side it had Vincent Price, Debra Paget, Elisha Cook Jr, and Lon Chaney, Jr. The costumes were good, too. The opening montage is the same as "The Raven" (also 1963) with Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, and a young Jack Nicholson, and having very little of Poe except the title. Some of the sets were re-used in "The Terror" (also 1963), a retread of "The Fall of the House of Usher" with Karloff and Nicholson.
    Price and Paget were also in Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" (1956).
    In the hard-core trivia department, it's one of only two films to team up Vincent Price and Lon Chaney, Jr. The other is "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948); and in that, Price is voice-only as the Invisible Man at the end. (You can tell I haven't wasted MY life.)
    I missed the others in this list but I do remember "Re-Animator," either in previews or on TV. Thanks for the memories.
