    Dark City is/was one of my favorite films of all time. I've watched it over 1000+ times; listened to the soundtrack; read the scripts; and truly love the world it built. I see a lot of the same themes found in Solaris, and even Sunshine that really resonate around love, loss, fear, along with hope. The ending of Dark City in my mind is a perfect ending that gives you just enough closure, and hope it wraps up the core theme perfectly.

      Daybreakers I liked very much, partly because I myself am a nocturnal creature... Also great description of the madness with dwindling resources and so on. Sadly, towards the end got diluted.
      Silent Running also very good, madness comes in many forms. Robocop is Robocop and corporatewhorism. Snowpiercer... I have divided feelings about that. Most telling about it was the plan (did it happen?) dumping down for american audiences, who would be bored with too much thinking or something, as some film mogul stated.
      Have to get back on Code46...

    This video seemed to miss that THX 1138 was George Lucas's first feature film, and based on a short he made at USC called "Electronic Labyrinth". Every movie Lucas has made since has references going back to THX 1138 - a license plate in "Corvette Summer", the "THX" sound system developed for "Star Wars", and also the line "Prisoner transfer from cell block 1138" in the movie, and the list goes on and on.

    Serenity, in my opinion, is an almost perfect film. One of the reasons is that the cast and crew loved working together and each member of the cast were perfectly chosen for the role they played. Combine that with an excellent script, fantastic visual effects and Josh Weedon, the result is perfection; or as close as you can get it this world.

    One of the best dystopian stories is a Home, a 60s TV play about overpopulation. Nine people live in a high tech room. On the wall are scribbled the generations of names of people who lived in that room in years past. They virtually ONLY know of themselves. But there are supposedly billions of other rooms like theirs. It was an excellent story.

    I'm glad to see Dark City here and surprised to see Dredd. Dredd is a good movie that kind of fit in but not at the expense of a movie like 1984 or A Clockwork Orange. I'm a big Joss Whedon fan and I love Serenity but on the Dystopia scale it is in the neighborhood of Star Wars. Even Starship Trooper is more dystopian.
    But on the whole, including other sci-fi themed videos you've done, I like that you show that the sci-fi genre is more than action movies with ray guns.

    The king of all dystopian films was left out - "1984", and I'm not sure why. Having been made three times - 1954, 1956, and 1984 - with the 4th starring Chris Hemsworth as Winston Smith, a strange choice for sure. The 1956 Edmond O'Brien version stands toe to toe with the John Hurt 1984 remake.

  • @RCSVirginia
    @RCSVirginia 7 років тому +1

    I certainly agree with your first two choices: "Dark City" and "Dredd" are excellent. I'm not sure if "Dark City" qualifies as dystopian, but that is a minor quibble. The rest are good picks, too. If you want to do a secondary follow-up video of eight more flicks, you may want to consider "Bladerunner," "1984," "Idiocracy," either one of the "Total Recall" movies and "Snowpiercer." Though 'Snowpiercer" went off the tracks in the final ten or fifteen minutes of the movie, up to that point, it was great.

      Definitely Dark City, I've been hearing about it for a while now, this list just reminded me to watch it.
      Watched your 'Hard Sci-Fi' and 'Cyberpunk' lists earlier. Pretty good too, they were a great source of indications for my "to watch" list.

    Of course there are always great movies that won´t come to mind just in a moment... Equilibrium I also rated high + there´s sideshow for me being toxicology and pharmacology professional. Children of Men also very nice, actually these all are very good choices, Soylent Green pure legend, Battle Royale so twisted... Serenity and then Firefly, obviously too good for it was cancelled.
    Dredd very entertaining, Dark City quite different, but sort of haunting. THX1138 (how many new versions of it´s been made?) is in near future, as probably is Fahrenheit 451, which I first read (in Finnish translation) when I was about 12yo, as movie I was little disappointed, but that doesn´t make it the least less important and necessary to see/read.

    I agree, Dredd is a fantastic movie. Completely took me by surprise for just how brilliant it is, awesome visuals, great dialogue and brilliant action.

    Normally, 'director's cuts' are either extremely minor changes that seem meaningless, or there was a good reason the edits were made.
    That said, Dark City has a phenomenal director's cut. It slows the movie down. It builds it like a noir detective story. There is no speech at the opening explaining things. I must say, I think it is an altogether better film this way - although the original is more digestible for those not really into the mystery style of film.

    Cyborg should be on the list. It had Van Damme kicking some ass, and the bad guy was the creepiest most badass villian ever! Hell, all the characters were named after guitars! How awesome is that!?

    Seen about half this list already, funny thing is that THX 1138 and Equilibrium are both ones I watched on a whim (showed up in my feed). THX was okay to me, interesting concept about what could happen in the future. Equilibrium is definitely a re-watchable film.
    Dredd and Serenity as also some favorites of mine.

    What about Rollerball, the 1970s original with James Caan? That's outstanding. And so are Gattaca, Brazil and Blade Runner (I mean, Blade Runner is one of the best films ever made)

    Before you watch Serenity, be sure to watch the entire Firefly series, it’s only one season. Available at your local used video store for about ten bucks, or new online for slightly more. Serenity contains plot elements that definitely belong at the end of the story.

  • @2old4gamez
    @2old4gamez 7 років тому

    The best way to watch THX 1138 is to dig around and see if you can find the laser disc version, this is the definitive original cut and is a work of art. The directors cut suffers from Lucas's 'if it ain't broke I'll ruin it anyway' meddling and as a result loses something over the original theatrical release and becomes a far inferior experience.
    Way to go George.
