With the '80s been a great decade for movies in general. I have to say a lot of my all-time favourite sci-fi comes from this period. Now in order to stop this video from becoming a Watchmojo popularity contest. I'm going to do something a little different from the norm and split the vid into two segments.
The first been a quick summary of what I think are the best sci-fi films. And the 2nd - will cover all the entertaining movies with great one-liners and cheese action scenes that didn't quite make it to the top and got overshadowed by all the instant classics that we all love today.

"Enemy Mine" was awesome. I had forgotten that one.
For an older treatment of the same theme in World War II, there was an old movie entitled "Hell in the Pacific." Two combatants, one American and one Japanese get stranded together on a desert island and go from fierce enemies to begrudging partners to survive and get off the island to friends. Not to spoil it, but that one has a rather bleak and sad ending.

1985 - Back to the Future, Brazil, Cocoon, Creature, Day of the Dead, Enemy Mine, Explorers, Lifeforce, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, The Quiet Earth, Real Genius, Re-Animator, The Return of the Living Dead, Trancers, Weird Science, Legend, Ladyhawke.
1986 - Aliens, Critters, Dead End Drive-In, Flight of the Navigator, The Fly, Invaders From Mars, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Transformers: The Movie, The Wraith, Night of the Creeps.
1987 - Amazon Women on the Moon, Cherry 2000, The Hidden, Innerspace, Predator, Robocop, The Running Man, Spaceballs, Steel Dawn, Real Men.

    4. Earth girls are easy
    And 5. Real genius.
The last one may not be a technical definition of sci-fi, but the use of the science in the film have yet to be achieved in real life. The level of real world application of the final product is still minute today. But the use of said technology on that kind of scale with the real world components of the time is what i call real intellectual sci-fi. I hope you agree. So glad to see someone finally talking about The Hidden! It was absolutely terrific! Hilarious, unnerving, sexy, creepy, full of action, and also eerie. Kyle MacLachlan said he was trying to convey with his weird acting style what it might be like for an alien to find himself in another person's body/world, unsure how it all worked or how to handle it. And he did that brilliantly! Very existential, as we all do that in our time on earth, don't we? An interesting mirror to our own experience. At one point, if I recall correctly, over dinner he asks the cop who invited him home to dinner and starts to get more and more rattled and borderline pissed off at not understanding him, "Do you love your wife?" and then seems to ponder and consider the answer as if solving some sort of esoteric puzzle. It just freaks out the cop even more! He doesn't know what the hell is going on with this guy! Plenty of fun scenes and twists and bits of humor, both big and obvious and small and sly. Just a great movie with great acting and great action and humor. Really something special!

I totally agree with your comments on Robocop. It's so easy to dismiss it as a cheesy action film, but there is so much more going on there if you peek under the covers.
On one level below there is the satirical comment on American society in the 80's, but beneath even that is an exploration of the dehumanising effect of technology and striving to regain your humanity from that. In fact, New Scientist magazine had an interesting multi-page article in an issue published not long after the film came out which explored that in great detail. I wish I still had a copy of it.

I don't think it deserves the low score it has on IMDB (5.7).
And a big thanks for having *Batteries not included on here, I saw it in the theater with my Dad when I was a kid. I remember getting pretty emotional watching it, absolutely a fun film.
Finally, Flight of the Navigator is a pure classic! My 8 year old son didn't want to watch it when I put it on, but I knew he was into it when 20 minutes in he wasn't talking and just watching.

    1. Predator - everything is true. I'd say even with all appreciation it is still heavily underrated movie. Masterpiece of action and building up true suspense.
    2. Back to the Future - Well, mostly true, but Terminator dilogy (sic!) has some valid arguments about best time travelling movie. Anyway this competition is so close that there is no real point in arguing. Both are timeless classic at this point and both are must see for everyone, period.
    3. T1 - Speak of the devil, lol. I just write this comment as I watch video. Yes, you can't talk 80's sci-fi movies without mentioning Terminator. Just like you can't talk 80's sci-fi animation without mentioning Akira. You can't overrate their impact on future generations. You just can't.
    4. Wrath of Khan - Never was trekkie, so I'll just pass on this. But with all those memes I guess I need to watch it someday.
    5. Robocop - Oh my god yes. Great sci-fi and even better social commentary, which is valid up until this very day. Paul Verhoeven at his best. One of the most criminally underrated directors of all time. Yes, all praise considered, still too low.
    6. TheThing - Another insanely underrated director showcasing how to pay homage to movies you love with really great remake. This is one of really few remakes I can safely call better than original. And that is not to say that original wasn't damn good.
    7. Blade Runner - you may find it boring, but this is another cult classic you just have to see. Too bad it won't live much longer. But then again - who does?
    8. Aliens - James Cameron showing how to make proper sequel to cult classic, while making it cult classic again it it's own right. Fun fact: both Ridley and James made it to this list before this point. And rightfully so.
-------and now to the reasons why I am subbed to this channel-------
    9. The Hideen - no idea, must see.
    10. Flight of the Navigator - I remember watching this as a kid. That is it, lol. Gotta refresh my memory to say something certain, except this movie's title became meme of bad piloting for my generation.
    11. Innerspace - I have strong deja vu vibes with this one. Must refresh.
    12. The Wraith - no idea, must see.
    13. Weird Scince - I remember this as moderately fun sitcom, less fun than Alf, but with hot chick and... And that's it.
    14. Batteries not included - same as #11. I know I watched it at some point. And that's it.
Anyway, keep doing what you do. I can't say that I have found many good movies via your channel (Zardoz, Cherry 2000, Logan's Run and Outland are hard to call "good" in general terms) but those still were good in more than one way if not overall. Yeah, if someone wants to see generally praised movies, he can go to watchmojo video. But HyperDrive is mostly educational.

Great list of movies. Regarding The Terminator: After a friend and I saw it, we had one of "those" discussions (liberally lubricated, of course) in which we discussed the violence in the movie. We could not identify a SINGLE CASE of gratuitous violence. As violent as it was, there was never a scene we thought was there solely for the sake of violence. The relentless nature of the T-800 was solely focused on eliminating his target - if only if he knew who she was. The Terminator is an absolute gem.

I know I'm biased because as someone born in 1970, the 80s were my golden cinema years, but it's not easy to name sci-fi movies better than the ones in your list (before the hidden gems). Also, every one of the films in the "popular" category are either the beginning (or near the beginning) of huge franchises and/or have been remade (usually poorly). The only exception is Blade Runner (in some ways my favourite on the list) which only had one, long awaited sequel.

Working on a part 2 and I couldn't agree more- there are still some decent flicks... but honestly.. if I made an 90's & 2000's version... it would pale in comparison.
