      If you have to drill, use a sharp 1/4" drill bit. Make sure to support the frame when drilling. If you are not able to drill out the bolt, as a LAST resort you can cut the bolt with a hack saw. Be SUPER careful not to damage either the swing plate of the rear swingarm or the hinge tube of the main frame (really easy to do).

    Good tip I got from Kinetics is to stick an allen wrench in the bolt, the tighter the better, and heat the wrench with a torch. The heat will get the loctite without risking to burn the paint on the frame. Awesome video!

    First time I have seen the proper reaming tool. Did mine 2 years ago with a standard reamer. It now needs doing again after some 3K miles. I used screw extractors, to lock the spindle for removal of the second bolt. I also used a torque wrench to set the screws. But I have qualifications in basic mechanical workshop practice. I have trouble finding anyone that is qualified to repair Bromptons!

    Firstly l, thank you Chuck for sharing your knowledge about Brompton maintenance and thank you Brian for a so interesting video.
    For sure, rear hinge replacement isn’t for everyone.
    With the right tools, those used by Chack, good manual skills and mechanical maintenance experiences, it is feasible.
    I am one of those people that likes doing maintenance to his Brompton.
    Yes, my rear hinge has a certain play so I need to replace the pin.
    What I need to proceed with the pin replacement is the way I can get or build the following tools:
    1. To hold the axel while removing the opposite bold (at 7:35 of the video)
    2. To remove old bushings (at 11:17of the video)
    3. Special reamer (at 13:31 of the video) to ream the new bushings
    Thanks in advance.

    Fantastic, I always tell new Brompton owners (in London) to get to know their local Bromnpton dealer by name and just chat to them, rather than dealing with big anonymous shops. The experience, knowledge and friendliness of these small shops is exceptional and worth cultivating if you have one nearby.
    My Brompton is 7 years old now and I've never done that, or needed to touch the other hinges.

I thought it was my chain ring, but it was the same fold screw. Even with the loctite, it self-loosened. one strange thing, are the bolts are not metric. Per reading, i thought there was a tool to hold the drill vs hand holding. also i thought brompton shops would not have to use diy rigs. obviously the operator knows what he is doing/has experience. thanks for doing the video. i know what to look for, and that i am bringing it in for a mechanic to work on it.

    • @cwankeny002
      @cwankeny002 3 роки тому +2

      About 10 Nm. But not that critical because I'm using red Loktite. Tight, but not so tight that you strip the wrench or the bolt head. The bolts are very hard so you will likely strip the tool before the bolt. It is important to use a good tool and make sure it is fully engaged. Old worn out tools will give you real problems.

    @pentacleman1000 3 роки тому

    I’ve ordered a Brompton, don’t have it yet. Was curious about this critical point of vulnerability in the design. It was a little hard to see exactly how it was going back together. It looked like the pin or spindle protruded out on either side. I was expecting the flat parts of the triangle to rest on those protrusions and pivot on the spindle… or turn the spindle as it pivots, but then he added the nylon washers, and it looked like there was no more spindle protrusion left at all… which means that the triangle is pivoting on the screws??? Or was there still some spindle protruding that I couldn’t see, and the triangle was pivoting on that, and the screws just hold it all in place? I don’t get it, it was hard to see. You want the back triangle and the spindle to be like one piece, rotating inside the bushings, right? So do the screws just hold the triangle up against the sides of the spindle to make it one piece? Hard to see. I guess I’ll have to wait until I get my own bike.

    I am NOT AT ALL mechanically inclined, I wouldn't dare attempt to do this myself

      I would rather let someone else do it as well.

    You should definitely have him overhaul your bike once a year. Why given all the riding you do why don’t you have clipless pedals? Why didn’t you swap out the chainring if that’s what you wanted?

      I hate clip in pedals......and the shoes are horrible to walk in.

    He has clamped the bike round the seat tube. Never do this. Brompton specifically tell you not to. The area where the seat tube is is secured is a major weak point of the frame. The fact that the Brompton has a long seat tube also means that there is increased leverage at that area. Always make sure you have a bike stand wide enough to secure the bike around the main tube, thereby avoiding that issue. I have had problems with the area where the seat tube is clamped shut (albeit not from being damaged in the bike stand); luckily Brompton replaced my damged frame free of charge. But please - just don't do it.

      That doesn't make sense. That seatpost is supposed to design to hold up a rider that's around 100kg? The bike itself is around 12kg, so shouldn't be a problem.

      As I understand it, that part's called the seat post. I think you're right about the leverage btw. The way he clamped it near the top, there's going to be a lot of torque round that clamped area that could potentially bend/misshape the post, making it difficult to slide it down the seat tube. The main tube's a much safer choice.
