I definitely don’t miss the bottom brackets of my childhood with loose ball bearings inside. Sealed cartridge BBs were such a massive improvement for me and I’m glad the Brompton has them
Yeah... I'm not doing that... EVER! 😂 Watched the whole thing though, because, who knows. May come in handy one day. I appreciate all the exertion you applied to the task!
The hammer and block of wood method is also needed if you don't screw the crank puller all the way into the crank, so instead of pulling the crank off the bottom bracket, it pulls the threads out of the crank. What I do now is I clean the threads in the crank with a small brush and a bit of degreaser, and then make absolutely sure I drive the puller home with a wrench.
Great video as always. Brompton BB shells tend to be distorted, perhaps due to the machining of faces happening pre brazing, then the brazing causing the BB shell tube section to gently 'banana'. This is why a lot of manufacturers face the BB shell after the frame is constructed. But Brompton tend to get away with what is otherwise a major issue because of their use of plastic cupped BBs. So anyone e.g. upgrading to a TI Parts titanium metal cupped BB or another part like that will likely run into major problems because on tightening, the bearings may fall out of alignment and grind due to incorrect axial loading. For this reason, I had to drop my Brompton to my bike shop to have the BB shell faced. Prior to that, tightening the BB shells was causing the axle to grind (which would destroy the bearings). Also pro tip, the SHIMANO TL-UN73 / Park Tool BBT2 (replaced now by BBT22) tool works best when used with a penny washer and bolt to affix the tool to the BB axle, which maintains a fixed load during rotation towards its removal, which tends to stop the plastic BB teeth stripping, which is what I did, and then my bike shop showed me what they do to prevent that ;)
I have no idea what the last part of your comment is talking about but I'm going to re-watch this video and try and figure it out because it sounds important for when I end up changing mine hahaha
Great video. Might you consider making a video on the installation of the rear rack for those of use who purchaded a bike without one? I would very much appreciate watching such a video before attempting to install the rack on my new bike. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for watching -and the suggestion. We have a long history of trying to do the rack video! We keep selling them and. It having a spare one to fit! Fingers crossed we can do this soon!
Great video! Coincidentally I ordered a new BB from you last night for my ex wife's 3 speed (yes we're still good friends!). I've changed my own BB in the past but there's some good really tips here that never occurred to me. The strap and seat post trick will save my knuckles at the weekend!
Thank you for watching 😊. Hopefully not balance bikes for too long! A nice new collection of BB to go in… I have an orange one to go with SnackSuma (the orange Brompton) on order.
Great video again, earlier this year I did a full overhaul of my Brom' as many parts was at end of useable life including the BB that was 22 years old Stu.
A very clear explanation - and I love the very idea of the Brompton Balance Bike. Can't wait to see you riding it to school (thinking of a famous video of a young fellow doing just that!). However I have to say I'm not impressed with these two Park Tools. I reckon a 3/8 drive ratchet plus half a dozen carefully selected sockets and about 4 hex drivers could cost less and would certainly avoid the awkwardness of trying to force the tool handle past the pedal and crank arm. In point of fact my crank extractor does not have a built in handle, I simply use an adjustable spanner to fit and the ratchet to extract and I can always arrange things so that the spanner handle is roughly opposite the crank arm, for good leverage. Still, you got the job done. I stand to be corrected on this, but would it be a good idea to warn against combining ISO and JIS components? I understand the taper angle is subtly different which make it difficult tp get a proper alignment between chainring and sprockets.
Been waiting for such a video for a long time. Excellent video and explained so well. Differences between pre and post 2013 bottom brackets. What tools to use. Direction of turning the tools, etc, etc. Well done! Waiting for Part 2. In the future could you consider doing a video on changing the headset?
Thank you so much for watching, your comments and suggestion. Funnily enough we recorded a video on replacing the Brompton headset, then weren’t happy with it, so never made it! We plan to re do it soon!
I've changed a plethora of bottom brackets in my years of disassembling and repairing bikes, so have no reason to watch this video other than the fact that I enjoy watching your content. Saying that i wasn't aware of the new standard of bottom brackets, so I have learned something today. @16.40, That's what she said, (cultural reference for those who may get it)
I have changed my Bottom Bracket into a titanium version with ceramic balls, and I expect it to last my time, as now still 73, for a month and a few days. Years ago I built a LOOK top frame with a Shimano Dura-Ace set, and Brompton could learn much from more modern type sets!
Very good and informative as usual and I liked how surprised you was that what you were doing was actually working , I think the song has to be = ( Riding A Bike = Rudebone ).
I do love watching your maintenance videos - always informative but entertaining too! Square taper BB is such old technology now but still does the job. I have to say that cartridge BBs are one of my top 10 cycling innovations over the last 50 years because I no longer had to adjust the old cup and cone type that never seemed to stay in adjustment for long and let water in almost immediately!!
This is an excellent video. My question is can I replace my old pre 2013 bottom bracket and put a newer one back in? So re-fit a JIS one having taken an ISO out? I'm wanting to end up with a chainset that has both a chainguard on and a smaller number of pointy bits in preparation for an easier gear up the hills of Bristol!!
Thanks for watching! Hope it helped. If you change to the newer bottom bracket you need to change to the new spider crankset, like this one brilliantbikes.co.uk/brompton-chainsets/1939-brompton-crankset-with-44t-spider-chainwheel.html Otherwise the chain line is out
