Unfortunately gorillas don’t talk human! However the gorilla controlled the entire situation, knowing something was not right! And he allowed the staffer to leave his space safely! Primates have a lot more human in them, than we give them credit….. probably a lot more human than most humans!

I had a cousin who worked at the Detroit gorilla enclosure for about 30 years, and got to know as well as possible, and said he'd NEVER want to be face to face with one. The strength they have is so incredible, even if they liked you they could hurt you.
It depends whats the relationship with the keeper and gorillas this zookeepers havent been doing the right thing with the ankmals normally the keeper is part of the family and he will never behave like this! Ive seen it at jersey wildlife preservation trust
Big respect to the first zookeeper who drew all the attention to herself to distract from the second zookeeper, the gorilla was always focused on her. Many would have closed the door in fear. She knows her job, brave, great experience, life saver, give her a leadership position you won't get a better employee. Also very well filmed, always in the right place. What an intense scene
He seemed more alarmed than aggressive,or he would have come directly for the first keeper. Instead, he hits the box to make noise to scare them,then halts to get a good look at the first keeper. He then checks for the second one but heads for the window and turns his back to it. That was him getting both in a position for him to see clearly,turning his head back and forth. The thing is, at that point, he's not turned toward he second keeper,he moves, and she ducks behind the tree. He looks for her then,knows she's there,he knows where everyone is. Then he turns and runs along the wall to the corner. He did that to herd the keeper to the door because he wanted them gone. At any moment, he could have easily gotten ahold of either of the keepers. He could have run the second one down easily before she got to that door. Instead, he goes for the white bucket looking for chow. I don't think it was a territorial thing as much as a surprise and his reaction. But also a territorial response. Because he first time he stopped to look at the keeper in the door,he put a tree in between them,as protection. Once he saw who they were,he he recognized them,he knew what they smell like,ect. Otherwise, I'm betting that if it was a stranger, he would've come for them. When I would see it as a territorial threat. I wonder if he had ever seen them in there before,and it freaked him out,lol

It often happens that captive animals, or semi tame ones, are more dangerous than wild. Partly lack of fear or respect, partly possible frustration or mental issues from being in captivity. He was used to them being around, but not in that situation, quite probably felt threatened. And even in a bluff charge he could do serious damage without really meaning to. Captive animals don’t automatically love those who tend them.
I mean you already got your answers but yeah, obviously animals are way more stressed in cages. Plus Gorillas are of course quite smart. He didn't feel any anger towards the keepers, good for them. The easiest situation to understand the difference between "free" and captivity are killer whales. They occasionally kill trainers and such in captivity. Not by accident, because they want to. They don't kill humans in the free. They're also incredibly smart and know exactly what's going on.

Theyre territorial. If you stay calm and dont make noise while not looking them in the eyes your chances of exiting are pretty good. Also smiling at them is a nono. Theyre calm most of the time but if you arent they sure as hell wont be.
