None of these birds are very intelligent (I say endearingly). They were just at a standstill, it looked like. Owls are quite silly; nowhere near being the symbols of wisdom that they are in media.
Erm, sorry to tell you, but owls aren't actually that bright. When everything stopped, they probably didn't know what to do because there was no movement. Especially the one sat on the eggs (I assume the mother). She was clearly confused and only realised when the kestrel moved again. Also, it was the kestrel that had hold of the barn owl.
Birds are both very delicate, and quite powerful. A well placed bite could prove immediately fatal, and you bet each could crush the other with their talons were they not locked together.
Actually if you look at 0:06 you will see the Kestrel just poked its head in to look and the owl jumped up and grabbed it and yanked it inside. The Kestrel was genuinely surprised, and it was also fortunate enough to get away with its life. Moral of the story....dont get near an Owl nest...ever.
The fact that the owl behind the kestrel is probably just like "nice wing you got here, would be a shame if someone ripped it off" makes it ten times more hilarious

I love how after the initial attack the owls seem to revel in their supremacy and convey to the little petrified Kestrel that "your soul belongs to us now". And the kestrel knows it.
I love that the mother, hovering over her eggs, sat there lingering over the kestrel, whispering sweet nothings to it. You can practically see the death threat in its eyes warning that if it tries anything, it's gonna tear out the kestrel's throat.
“My husband is so gonna fuck you up if you try anything, do it, try anything. I dare you, I fucking double owl dare you. Bitch, biiiiiiiiitch, you fucking pussyyyyyy.” - the instigating wife, which led to the second scuffle.
The whole scene is giving...vigilante justice on a home invader who decided to participate during a purge...& I love it 🤣. They were deciding what to do with their perpetrator turned victim. 😭
Predators are terrified of getting injured because that means they cant hunt and if they can’t do that they might starve so they avoid fighting much more than you’d think with an animal near their size or bigger. If these bird had tried to eat their eggs I bet those owls would have gone shit thought and killed it.
The only reason why I think it was 'controlled' is the kestrel was assessing the situation against 'two' birds vs. one. The kestrel, IMHO, was more in control based upon what I've read, and it decided not to pursue the situation. The owls, if anything, may have been more paralyzed and what you're seeing is the owls freezing.
Are you crazy the Kestrel was shaken those owls were in complete control and that kestrel survived because the owls let it. They were somewhat sadistic at times.
Amazing. This was incredible to witness. I imagine the owl leaning over the other bird whispering something like, “Please stay, we would love to have you over for dinner tonight”.
I like how around 20 seconds or so it just sits there completely regretting its decision lmao. Its just frozen in fear for almost a whole minute lol. Then tries to fight back just enough to get away and the owl says NO IM THE BADASS HERE and just flips it back over like nothing. At that point its in desperation mode slamming itself around trying to find the exit. 🤣
Love how the kestral started to fight again after calming down and then was like “alright alright! We’re chill. I’m done I swear”😂 Glad it got it out cause those owls weren’t playing any games
@Ron Isley they both latched onto each other. The kestrel had both paws on top of the owls legs while the owl only had one claw locked on underneath the kestrels legs which is why it wasn’t able to escape on its few attempts
Look at how both the kestrel and the owl are instinctively pinning each other's claws. They're smart enough to defend themselves against the most dangerous parts of their bodies. This is practically a close-quarters knife fight.
So true! I see how the barn owl was trying for a kestrel's neck twice. He knows there is a main blood artery, that can't handle a powerful beak! So clever
I love how the owl passively held down the bird while the other was ready to throw hands like good cop bad cop Owl 1: “I won’t hurt you. I’m just curious what brought you here” Owl 2: “SMELL LIKE BITCH IN HERE.”
Fun to read everybody’s take on this. I was impressed by the sound communication. The male owl started to get fed up and probably grabbed the intruder harder with its claws. The intruder started screaming. That’s when the male owl let it go and the pair let it get out after that. The intruder was flapping around a lot while trying to get out, and it could have been seen as yet another attack, but I think that the verbal communication was understandable for all parts and that’s why the owls leaned back while the intruder tried to get out.
Yea after watching this, I can actually notice that the owls move in a way that shows that they seem to be actively assessing the situation. I never really looked into how intelligent owls are known to be, but something about this situation shows me they’re either older and experienced or they are somewhat very intelligent
They are very intelligent. They didn't simply act on instinct and went crazy but instead assessed the situation calmly to prevent the eggs from breaking.
Yeh…You are right the male owl fought the Hawk and the female owl protected the eggs. But now the male owl is injured. So, I don’t know if the male owl will be able to protect his family from another attack.
Here’s a rundown: Kestrel was perched outside and likely aware that there were owls nesting there, but wasn’t sure if they were present at that time or not. Kestrel tries to land on the rim of the entrance to peer in but misjudges the width and ends up falling into the nest itself. Not good for Kestrel. The owl that confronts Kestrel is Owl A, which i believe is a male. The owl that defends the eggs is Owl B, female. Mummy. Both of their instincts kick in immediately and they know to function as a team and multitask by Owl A dealing with the threat and Owl B protecting the eggs. Kestrel falls in and Owl A positions himself beneath it to latch onto the intruder, but as Kestrel falls its own instincts kick in and it also latches, so both grab each other’s legs. Interestingly, Owl B moves as soon as Kestrel falls in and begins flapping her arms, which indicates she was trying to frighten the threat instinctively despite not needing to. Owl A is clearly experienced in bird-on-bird combat and immediately attempts to pin Kestrel to the floor by throwing it down. At this point Kestrel is in trouble and is well aware it has fucked up. It tries to release its legs with a kick but Owl A has it pinned there and Kestrel’s right talon has locked up, a problem for birds of prey as this means Kestrel cannot release itself from Owl A. As such, they wrestle for a bit but Owl A is much larger and stronger than Kestrel, and the fight takes Kestrel to the corner near the eggs, which greatly distresses Owl B. Realising it can’t escape, Kestrel starts making a distress call and this is also likely due to pain and stress. Neither the Kestrel nor Owl A want to harm each other, they would much rather they both go their seperate ways and avoid conflict, but Owl A doesn’t know if Kestrel will leave if it lets go, and is also likely confused as to why Kestrel is still gripping its leg. Kestrel ends up upright and Owl A settles, which settles Kestrel. The sudden shift in the dynamic of the fight results in Owl B leaning in and inspecting Kestrel, as she is confused as well. Why isn’t the threat moving anymore? Is it still a threat? She examines Kestrel very closely and this is also a show of dominance. Both owls are now aware that Kestrel is going to have a very hard time fighting them both and causing any major damage, it just isn’t going to happen. Kestrel knows this too as during the scuffle it had either forgotten there was a second owl or was simply unaware in the first place. Kestrel freezes in place so as not to give them any immediate reason to kill it. You can see by Kestrel’s breathing it is very, very distressed. As soon as Owl B moves away Kestrel makes an attempt at escaping and tries to leave, but its right talons are still locked and Owl A has his right talons locked on Kestrel’s left ankle. Owl A places Kestrel against the wall and Owl B begins a threatening motion which makes Kestrel less confident and less likely to attack. You can see Kestrel looking frantically at her at this point. Owl A then attempts (quite confidently) to bite Kestrel’s throat, and Kestrel recoils and starts going ballistic to get free. Owl A once more uses his superior weight and strength to pin Kestrel down and then bites out some of Kestrel’s plumage in an attempt to get to its flesh. This is when Kestrel becomes once more very distressed and starts calling again. Owl A gets a good bite on the back of Kestrel’s head but Kestrel manages to get its head free and tries to throw itself backwards away from Owl A. Notice that both owls are quite calm and neither one of them is calling or being very aggressive. Owl B settles on the eggs and Owl A is now intent on killing Kestrel. He begins applying more pressure and corners Kestrel, smothering it and probably biting a few more times. This is when Owl B becomes more active and Kestrel finally gets its legs free, flapping up and around frantically to stay out of Owl A’s striking range. Kestrel is so stressed that it is disoriented and it takes some time until it leaves.
Excellent summary! I also noticed that in the latter half of the struggle, the kestrel struck at Owl A's face with a talon, clawing very close to its eye and I think scratching its nose (do owls have ceres?). At another point, before the kestrel began its escape attempts, Owl A bit down on the kestrel's beak. So brutal!
Very smart male, grabbing the kestrel’s feet and trying to keep her away from the clutch. The female wanted to attack but she needed to stay on the clutch and guard it, which is why she was just screaming and threat posturing. So no she isn’t “dumb” like some people are saying; both animals knew exactly what they were doing.
after reading this whole comment section i am even convinced that a lot of commenters here are "dumber" than any of the animals in this video. and yes, that includes the Kestrel things like situational awareness and common sense are so bred out of "modern" humans, it scares me
So by that logic, you would have leave your child alone to catch the pedophile/kidnapper who tried to get your child. Not a smart move to make as a parent
@@kingvagar Yep. With barn owls the female incubates, the male brings food. Even without the eggs you can tell which is which by colouration. The female is darker, and has black spots on her chest. (You do get the odd male with black spots, but their brown is still lighter than a female.) Who's incubating generally isn't a good rule of thumb for gender with a lot of birds though, some species they both incubate (some take turns swapping every hour or so, some have day/night shifts, the African Common Waxbill incubate together), with others only the female incubates, and with others only the male incubates.
I love how the kestrel initially fights back with confidence after that relaxing moment but eventually starts screaming bloody murder after the owl effortlessly flips her onto her back and all hell breaks loose. That final frozen frame of sheer terror as both owls begin closing in at 1:43
It had to know there was at least one of them in the nest. Those beaks are so sharp and pointy and scary that you forget their talons can rip you wide open, too.
@@Joke_Bidumb I googled it, the most intelligent birds.. Kestrel as well as eagles are not in top 40. No owls either though, so luckily this Kestrel went after barn owls and not a crow which are considered the smartest birds on the planet.. And they like a bit of necrophilia. So Kestrel wouldn't be too thrilled with the outcome, I have seen crows here fight off a buzzard or kite. (I wasn't paying attention to its tail,I just saw a big bird get it's ass handed to it by 2 crows)
@@Kat-mu8wq Crows are. But they don't kill birds of prey. They harass them. Wonder why I always see crows follow them, then found out, if a hawk catch something, the crows would dive into Hawks to force them to drop what they catch. Kestrel, I think are the second smallest bird of Prey in the states. Barn Owls are large.
@@jayme3181 That's probably because owls never move their eyes which are fixed, pointed forward and have to rotate their whole head to look around. Gives them a head movement that seems unnatural when compared to any other animal.
@@shadowfax9177 No wonder... owls are tough and strong, especially compared to their size... here for example, wild owls are the only true and very real threat to domestic cats, even if larger birds do live here aswell. Local wild owls are roughly the same size as cats, but can kill or badly injure a cat pretty easily... Cat sure won't attack one, it knows the result - but so does the owl, and it might attack the cat instead. Can only imagine how terrified this kestrel was...

Facts about barn owls and owls: -Barn owls are actually not in the “true owl” family, rather they are in the “barn owl” family. -Barn owls are one of the most widespread species of birds; the range of the barn owl includes all continents but they are absent in certain islands, as well as polar and desert regions. -Barn owls are mostly monogamous and unless their partner dies, they typically mate for life. -Like other owls, barn owls have forward-facing eyes which offer binocular vision, similar to us. -Owls have excellent low-light vision, and are most likely nearly colorblind (this actually helps as seeing less colors makes it easier to distinguish prey in the night). -Owl vision is based on movement. -All of these adaptations can help an owl visually locate their favored small mammal prey in the darkness. -But it’s possible an owl’s hearing plays the strongest part in finding prey, even more than their sight. Their sense of hearing is actually better than their sense of sight! -Owls have very sensitive hearing and one of the best of any animal. In near darkness, owls can locate relatively distant mice by hearing their little footsteps!
Additional fact (months late lol): barn owls (as most owls) have different ear placement for each side of the head, that helps them better locate their prey's exact position based on sound.
Actually the kestrel had its talons around the owl's legs for most of the encounter. It was trying to keep those talons as far away from it as possible because it knew that if it let go before it had a chance to escape it would be in much bigger trouble.
@@SilverScaleMA It’s also likely the kestrel’s talons locked up. This is a common occurrence in birds of prey because their talons are deaigned to lock when gripping prey, but it can backfire sometimes and result in things like this.

She was a mom too. Aint nobody getting her babies.
There tough!!
They are also smart considering birds of prey also.
"Those are some nice feathers and wings you got there, be a shame if you lost them and tried to fly"
Here’s a rundown:
Kestrel was perched outside and likely aware that there were owls nesting there, but wasn’t sure if they were present at that time or not.

Who's incubating generally isn't a good rule of thumb for gender with a lot of birds though, some species they both incubate (some take turns swapping every hour or so, some have day/night shifts, the African Common Waxbill incubate together), with others only the female incubates, and with others only the male incubates.

Facts about barn owls and owls:
-Barn owls are actually not in the “true owl” family, rather they are in the “barn owl” family.

What kind of a person has nothing better to do than troll owl videos on UA-cam? You, the guy without a properly functioning eyes or brain.
Lmfao
First day on the internet?
Dont worry petunia it gets easier as your sense of humor grows
All I did was say it looked like the owl was whispering in the ear of the sparrow hawk xD
if that's all it takes for you to let a complete stranger have power over your and your emotions....
If that to you is trolling...
I'd run for your anti anxiety medication now before your fragile sensibilities are tested any further buckaroo
😂😂😂😂😂 After all that owl said, " Now go and never dare to break into someone's private place"..😂😂😂😂
😂 the owls literally held that bird and one inspected it while saying, "Well well well.... What should we do with you?"
I know, it was so gangsta!
😆😆😆
@Lee looked more like a scene from Goodfellas lol
Nice wings you have there.🦉😈🦉
Would be a shame if somebody broke them🦅💀
@@ottosantiagolassus *proceeds to not break them*
That falcon looks like it got injured before trying to escape. Owls did a good job of being intimidating and protecting those eggs. I like how the owl in the back stared right at the camera at the end.
The kestrel is ok and occupied a kestrel box 40 meters from this one
@@CharterGroupBirdcams Thank you for the follow up. Last Spring I had a pair of nesting in a big tree in my side yard. They are colorful & good providers. Eventually two of the babies ended up on the ground & I was so worried since I have a guy who mows our 5 acres might run over them. But they did move to the church next door & were in 2 different trees & I guess the parents finished raising them over there. Fascinating.
Could it be that the kestrel was just looking for a nesting place and didn't see the owls at all? Attacking two owls would be pretty crazy.
This kestrel roosts on top of the nest and this was not the first time. She wanted the box but the owls are just too big. see ua-cam.com/video/ugd2TMoKZSg/v-deo.html thenua-cam.com/video/UL1jy9n5LYQ/v-deo.html
No look at the other camera...look at the back owl, they are watching each other before it kicks off.
With eyes like that I very much doubt he didn’t see them 👁👁👍👍
@@SupaPoopaScoopa I love how you're telling the people who posted this wtf is going on there...LOL OK BUDDY!
@@VL1975 Bro these people just have a camera setup. They could literally know nothing. I know that they do but just POSTING A VIDEO doesn't mean you know jack shit.
Also the owls YANKED the guy inside if you look at both cameras. He literally poked his head in for a second to look and got snatched in. So clearly the poster DOESN'T have all the details considering they've labeled it otherwise.
The Owls: "You came to the wrong neighborhood cuz...“
the restraining was the coolest part. it was interesting to see them gripfighting and grabbing one another's feet and ankles so they couldn't attack. it's rare to see such intelligent defensive actions in hostile, wild animal interactions. since they are both birds of prey they know that they both possess the same 'weapons'. bird grappling ftw!
I seen that I was aye yoooo they really smart honestly the hawk had him pin down if you seen not that I’m rooting on him but I’m very surprised he was able to hold him down with his claws and still lost really the the owl had that much strength but it was a very good video to watch
I think it is not rare to see such intelligent actions in general in wild animals, on the contrary. We just miss most of them.
@@anamariap7617 Its rare because the avg person is not observing animals...better yet the world around them
Well they are not really intelligent actions per say, more like inherited defense mechanisms
Yeah, hundreds of millions of years of evolution will teach you a thing or two.
I can hear the momma owl whispering "you're so deeeeaaaaad" in the kestrel's ears
Birds don’t talk tho 🤓
WOW! Once the kestrel was subdued, the owls actually looked like they were mulling the situation over. Maybe they were stuffed from a big meal earlier but that kestrel was very fortunate to get out alive. Thank you for video.
Barn owls to Kestrel: "Do You Feel In Charge?"
Damn, that was chilling. Imagine the terror the kestrel must have felt while it was being held down and surrounded by both owls. Must have thought it was done for.
I'm not sure why it wasn't , except maybe the owls didn't want a murder scene in their nest.
Don't start nothing, won't be nothing
Bro came to the wrong nest though I tell you what
@@stanleyhape8427 But isnt that free food?
@@Crazing No. Didn't you see the bloodied owl beak? It's not free food if the prey can damage or injure you, especially when you have hungry mouths on the way and the only way you can provide is through physical, gymnastic ability.
