As a retired OB nurse (human), this was so touching! So glad they were able to interpret Mom’s head-holding as the sign of a headache, and symptom of preeclampsia❣️
Right? They were obviously monitoring her really well. At least with humans they can tell u if they have a headache but with animals it’s all body language.
Hearing the baby’s cry… just, wow. I cannot imagine what that team felt while there in the room helping to bring the baby into this world. It’s magical.
So precious, and very rewarding to see that they were able to save both the mother gorilla and this little infant since they are endangered in the wild.
Certainly not a doctor or expert but I would assume any female mammal could get pre eclampsia during pregnancy just given the complications that arise from giving birth to a live baby rather than say some other animals that lay eggs

The way the Dr. held her hand during the C section… God bless the zoo for making the call, Dr. Jamie and her entire team for delivering this precious miracle and keeping mama & baby safe. I liked the way he held her hand too. In my opinion, humans are more compassionate this day in time,...thank God. 150 years ago, they would've treated both mom and baby like an object, instead of a living being.
I’m a Neonatal ICU RN & Lactation Consultant who assisted with hundreds of births in the OR. I adored being a part of the moment a family first met their baby. This is wonderful and amazing! I assisted in my nephews who were premature twins birth and cared for them, my godchildren, my friends and just about everyone I went to schools, with growing up. In my 20s & 30s, it almost weekly ended up in deliveries of old friends and schoolmates. It was just really lovely to be there in their happy moments. I can’t imagine how incredible this was for this team!
i had pre-eclampsia, and had a c-section back in december. my little girl is sleeping next to me right now. so happy this amazing team helped another mommy in need. now she and her baby can start their wonderful life together
So adorable. This is actually not that unusual for human medical professional to help zoo animals... I remember when that little baby hippo needed IVs put in and they called a pediatrician.
When our cat had to go to eye specialist, we learned the veterinarians in the group volunteered their services to zoos in the area. Animals get cataracts too, among other eye ailments.
Their organs are all in the same place as on humans. The female body parts are also very similar. It makes sense that an OBGYN would be called to perform the surgery. It’s an awesome experience for a human doctor. Once-in-a-lifetime.
Except she needed the hormones to acknowledge the birth and baby, unlike us we know 🤍, even if it's ceserean birth and premature, not the same instinct or connection
Having worked in L&D for years this is one of the most precious stories I've ever seen! ❤️ Hats off to the doctors and medical staff for this successful gorilla c- section delivery! 💕 🦍
