- A somewhat quick iPhone video with two of my incredible Preston Thompson guitars. The first is my newest dread with an Adirondack top and Madagascar Rosewood back and sides. The second one is my DMA (Adirondack top with Mahogany back and sides).
Preston and crew make exceptional guitars and I’m honored to own a few of them!
This video is in no way meant to be a comparison or review...the sound quality is that of an iPhone. I just love these two guitars and wanted to make a quick video.
Thanks for watching!
RIP Preston Thompson
Trey, amazing. Great guitar playing. That was just incredible. Will keep a Preston Thompson Dred on my list! Thanks for sharing - that really made my day!
The dread definitely has the deeper & warmest sound to me, who am a bluegrasser. I have a mahogany Martin DM which sounds great, but cannot dig out any more volume. Thanks for the good demo and the shining talent God has blessed you with. We are grateful.
I am getting rid of my Martin guitar and buying one of these Thompson guitars
When you have a lot of time alone to work on things, you can get really good at things. Great playing.
You're always welcome in Ft. Worth, TX sir. Thoroughly enjoy watching you play a Thompson.
You sir are a great player, and one blessed man.
Wow, both are great sounding guitars complementing each other, great guitar playing by the way.
Awesome guitar, awesome pickin' Trey!!!!!!!!!
Hi Trey Hensley..
Hope all is well 👍
Thanks so much for a lengthy demo on both your acoustic gears and each one beats the other and too good is the sounding with your touch especially, awesome dude..👏👌 Warm cheers 😊 God bless 🙏🎸🎶
Great guitars... Really like your playing too!
Beautiful guitars ..fab picking..love to have one !
Whew Doggie! Thanks for sharing your comparison! Killer pickin'!!! Very noticeable difference between the mahogany and the rosewood that I never get to hear from sitting out in front of the guitar instead of above them.
The rosewood has more low end, but that Hogg is loud and proud. Very nice guitars. Congratulations
Awesome!
Thompson guitars are really great. Your a really good and accomplished musician. You bring out the best in both guitars. Really good pickin. Tim
Bravo! You really demonstrate these guitars well. A Preston Thompson SL-MA (shipwreck) just shot my 1994 Santa Cruz Tony Rice Model D out of the saddle!
Two awesome guitars , I think the new one has a fuller richer tone that the second. You can leave me ether one in the will and I will be happy :-) Hope to see ya at IBMA in a few weeks .
Both guitars sounds great!
Wow this sounds great. No torrefied top either? The neck must be prefect for you. Amazing guitar picked by a true musician
Love the sound and tone well balanced! I need one ! I’ve always been a mahogany fan but this one has the same poppy tone just a little more rich in tone , enough to convert me ! Need to trade my d28 I’m keeping my 18
Man love your playing! And that tone! Can i ask about the first Thompson string action?. If you remember...I need to get close to that tone ! :) thanks in advance
The rosewood sounds like a pre-war Martin D-28, the mahagony sounds like a D-18, both good but I prefer the tone of the rosewood. For what's that worth. LOL Awesome picking on both. You're a helluva picker Trey!
Wow! Incredible picking, tone, and volume. Also as incredible is the fact that I just learned of "Pre-War Guitar Company a few days ago! The evolution of stellar acoustic guitars!
My first guitar was a Stella.
These aren't Pre-War guitars. They're Preston Thompson guitars.
@@drothberg3 Point being that there are new boutique guitar builders doing great work, as evidenced by both these brands!
mcdee56 yeah, Pre-War Co. and the Thomson crew are making some of the finest guitars I’ve ever played. Killer stuff!
Sounds pretty damn good to me even through an iphone!
Sweet

I like the tone of the mahogany Preston guitar best.
Great playing and a great guitar. Its a pity the table or desk blocked some of the views, it would have given me a good insight on cross-picking of which I would love to learn. Thanks anyway.
Hi there, thank you for sharing your thoughts on those two fine guitars and pick. You mentioned you liked your 1 3/4 nut. Is your bridge spacing 2 5/16? What are your neck shape thoughts: soft v, soft c...? Thank you!
I like the non fret dots...... do you still have this dread?
Trey that is some good picking. Do you give any lessons? I'm serious
Both sound great but I like the mahogany one the best.
People like you make me sick !! Sick I say !! Lol Great playing young man ! I wish you lived close by so maybe I could get some teaching from ya and both those guitars sound awesome !
Trey!!!!
This ain't meant to be a review or comparison or anything.....just me showin off to all you folks what wished you could play near this good ... .. j/k lmao ... good stuff man ... y'all oughta sit in with Paula jo Taylor there in Nashville some evening.
You make wanna use my guitars for firewood
What is the name of the song at 11:15, cant place it.
Trey how much are these and where do you find them
Jack Chapman you can call the folks at Thompson or get in contact with them through the website: pktguitars.com/.
Great picking! As for the guitar, it's a bit buzzy, isn't it?
Wilmer Furman it was a bit buzzy at the time. I had to have the action raised to get rid of the buzz. I play super (too) hard.
Wilmer Furman thanks for the kind words, by the way!!
Sure like mine....Adi/Brazilian. Just stupid good guitars.
I like the Madagascar sound better than the mahogany one.
Do you know how to play Blackberry Blossom?
JohnnyC Major yeah, one of my faves!
Nashville Cat, can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee ant hill. Anyone who unpacks his guitar can play twice as better than I will.
I like the DMA better.
Even if I had the money, I’m not worthy.
not my tone, good play sir.
