- Here are a few clips of me practicing at my studio. Getting to know my new Preston Thompson DMA (Adirondack Top, Mahogany Back & Sides). At that point, it's brand new and I had had it 4 days...so I'm still figure out where everything is and how to bring it's voice out but I am absolutly enjoying playing this guitar! Recorded with a Rhode Nt1 Mic, Presonus interface into my Macbook Pro/iMovie.
ps this is a repost. the first time it posted there was an audio issue
Beautiful.
thank you!
Beautiful playing. I love the burst on your new guitar. I'll give ya $3.47 for it right now. Cash money.
Wowie... That sound just fills the room!
Wow! What playing and what a guitar! Super clear highs miss and lows. Just exceptional. Nice work Adam!
Adam, first time i`'ve heard your your work. LOVE your music! Want to hear more. Oh, yeah, like the guitar too!
This sounds incredible friend, the guitar, the picking, beautiful.
I love that style of playing, thanks!
Such a well-balanced instrument wherever you pick it. Great sound, Adam.
thanks Tom!
Awesome playing! Love the guitar too!
Awesome sounding guitar, and great playing!!!
Truly a work of art.....the box and your skills of course....keep picking enjoy
Massimo Mandarino thank you much appreciated
Woo hoo! Sweet guitar Adam! Bring it with you to Ridgetop in October...
firebelly03 you got it!!
Beautiful instrument, beautiful sound, great playing Adam.
Sjaak Strik thank you. It’s fun to play.
The fact that is sounds warm with an NT1, which is always a little toppy to my ears says everything about the guitar. What a wold class instrument. Borrowing against kids college education, reluctantly seems like a great idea.
Money well spent Adam, hope you enjoy it for many years to come, you deserve it Bro, great picker. Love and best wishes from Ireland.
thanks Michael! Much appreciated.
nothing like economy of motion.....makes for great playing and flow. Super job.
Thanks Steve!
What a nice guitar. Congrats , dear Adam! I bet you cannot sleep...
Probe Raum picking is more fun than sleeping anyway ;>)
That ist the right attitude. Have a nice honeymoon with that gorgeous beauty. The best thing is, you can deduct the price for a wedding party, wedding gifts and a honeyman spree, etc. from the price of your new (bride) guitar. So maybe you even made some money, in buying the Preston Thompson. ;-)
BTW, is yours a sinker hog dread?
I have one of these arriving next week. It’s a light amber burst not too dissimilar to yours. I’ve been watching this video in anticipation. I think it’s gonna a great guitar.!
Congrats David!!! These Thompsons are something special. I am loving mine and logging a ton of hours on it. Give me and up date once it arrives...
I received the PT. Wow!
Great news!!!! They are great and pleasure to pick on.
Nice!
I think this will be keeper
JJ JJ I think you’re right!
Nice box! Fine job!
thanks Bob!
Wow, in every way!
Every bit the ring and clarity of a Martin in my opinion
Took me a minute to pull Salt Creek out of that. There's some tasty licks in there that's for sure.
Well if there is a guitar player who should have one of those it's you Adam ! I'm still enjoying your course and benefiting from all the great ideas you present ! I see many of them in your playing Salt Creek here. I've been hoping you would teach us Leave it Be. Love that tune.
thank you very much. I should do a lesson on Leave It Be. Quite a few pickers have asked about that.
Sounds great Adam! How would you describe the neck on the Thompson?
Eric Moore it feels great! It’s a 1 3/4 nut and what I’d call a C shape. Not to thick or thin..really promotes good left hand posture all around. I felt like I adapted to it quickly. The wider spacing is taking me a minute since my 39 18 is 1 11/16 and I’m been playing it mostly.
Wow !!!! You have it strung with what @@adamschlenker
wow what a great, articulate, balanced, resonant tone...What flat pick were you using here?
Adam, is the first third of the video a song or just improv. Do you have any tab for your own material
Sounds great and love the playing. Say, did you ever come across or compare it to a Martin D-18GE?
I didn’t do a direct comparison but I owned a 18GE years ago. It’s the sunburst Martin in a lot of my early videos. An excellent guitar but not as powerful as the Thompson.
@@adamschlenker I bought a 18GE about 20 years ago and still love it a lot, but this Thompson seems to be the nicer sounding guitar. I'm located in Europe, so I won't be coming across these I guess. Thanks for your reply.
@@TheoDahlemPickups they have a dealer or two in Europe so don't rule it out but you'll have to do a bit of searching imagine. I'd reach out to Thompson they could tell you where to look.
@@adamschlenker Yes, that's the way to go for sure. I'm currently not in the position to purchase one of these. Quite pricy they are. However I might come across one some day just for a test ride. Thanks for elaborating. Keep up the good work
Very nice job playing and a great tone.. It doesn't sound new.. What strings and pick were you using?
thanks Bill. As for picks and strings...pretty much same answer as in the 1939 D-18 video. Manouche Pick and D'Addario strings either EJ22 or EJ17 5thfretproductions.com/faux-shell-flat-picks-for-sale.html
Can you tell me what the string spacing is at the saddle? thanks jerry
This sounds way better than the slope shoulder to me, like butter.
Is it just me?
Joey Bologny to my ears they both sounded pretty incredible. The DMA was recorded with a rhode nt1 pretty close to it. I didn’t have any external mics with me the day my friend stopped by...so don’t let the ambient stereo mic throw your ears off. It was a power house of a guitar.
Beautiful instrument, beautiful sound. It looks like the one Preston made for Billy Strings. I like your playing better though. More finesse.
I know you have several different makes of guitars. Which is your current favorite?
toneman335 I’m crazy about my 1939 Martin D-18 but my “go to work” Guitar is my Preston Thompson DMA with the natural top.
I play mostly electric so what's the point of a capo if you're not going to change the key to sing along or accompany?
john farmer there’s a variety of reasons. Fiddle tunes and traditional instrumentals have particular keys they are played in...say key of A. Which may be great on fiddle or mandolin but could be awkward on guitar. So you try capo 2nd Fret into G position and the tune might site nicely on guitar.
C position is great for some cross picking styles so I might capo 2 for a D song putting It into C position.
All in all I like the combination of certain positions with certain keys...capo 3 G position for Bb or capo 3 C position for Eb. I just like the sound of the combination. I can play comfortably in any key without a capo but without the capo there are certain “traditional” sounds you just can’t access on acoustic guitar.
@@adamschlenker Ok thanks. Always more to learn.
Hello there.
What kind of Capo is that?
Thanks
It's an Elliot capo. They are pricy but they are hand made and will last an eternity.
I'm looking into getting one of these. You still have it ? How does it sound once the strings really settle in?
Alex, I don’t have it anymore. It’s was a great sounding guitar but the neck profile just never settled in for me. Just a preference thing..great sounding guitar no doubt. I sold it and bought a 39 authentic 18 which paired up better with my 1939 Martin D-18 which is my main recording guitar.
@@adamschlenker those authentics are amazing. I found the 39 to be such a powerful instrument. I have a 37 d28 A and it is just incredible. I need a mahogany dred but so many good ones to choose from. I need a pretty big neck and string spacing for my hand size.
@@thecanadianflatpicker you should look for a 37 authentic 18 then. Total powerhouse and big necks! They wear my hand out but if it works for you, they sound incredible
@@adamschlenker always wanted one. Can't decide between that or a dma really. Those 37 d18 As are tough to come by I hear.
@@thecanadianflatpicker they are out there. Keep an eye out and pounce.
Jealous! Enjoy your new toy.😎
thanks! I sure have been
nice picking , what does it cost ?
Thank ya much. I think they vary on price some depending on finish, features & wood...but around 5K give or take...
You still playing the Thompson?
yea buddy pretty much every day. But not the one in this video. I swapped it for a different one Thompson had that I liked the neck profile better on...it was more similar to my 1939 making it easier to switch back and forth. Both are great guitars....you can see the nature top Thompson in a couple other videos...
@@adamschlenker how do you think the thompson compares to the '39 D18 tonally, volume etc...
@@davidheenan7432 The thompson is very loud and responsive with really nice sustain. It's the best sounding new guitar I have ever owned but the 39 has had 80 years to develop and open up...that just can't be replicated...
