  • Here's my first lathe! The Craftex CX813 from Busy Bee Tools! It's honestly pretty solid for turning smaller objects! Here's and unboxing and my review of it, along with how much my setup ended up costing. Hope this helps, if you're considering this unit!
    The slimline pen kits can be found at penblanks.ca!

    I just bought this lathe! I went from a Mastercraft. I'm turning a pen right now! I was having trouble figuring out how to adjust the speed. That's how I found your video. I figured it out and turning a resin pen blank I made.

    Excellent review! I was looking into the grizzly version and came across your video. Loved it thank you for kinda going thru the getting into the hobby factor instead of just reviewing the lathe, as that is what I am currently trying to do. Was looking locally for second hand lathes but haven’t had much luck so now I’m considering new. Glad you mentioned all the stuff you need after the lathe to get going.

      @@AndrewSzeto Haha, I hear you. Part of me wants to jump into a larger lathe immediately but this looks like a great useful size. I really like your modern wood working style, I want to get into making similar things like pens, safety razors and espresso tampers.

      @@AndrewSzeto You're right, I can see it on their site, although it's a bit pricey. I'm pretty set on the CX813 and its on sale right now for $485 CAD but only available in Ontario and not BC where I'm from. Hoping they can ship between stores.

    Having just gone thru finding a chuck for pen turning I can recommend the WEN LA4374. I checked out different Wen jaws and found that this was the one I needed. The smaller less expensive chucks either didn't have pen jaws or the LA4275 with pen jaws only opened to about 5/8" .

    • @AndrewSzeto

      honestly good call! Wen seemingly came out of no where, but their stuff is great!

    Another Ottawa turner! I had to rewind the video when you mentioned the Ottawa City Woodshop haha. Pretty awesome that you can turn on the balcony! Is that the complex at York and Cumberland?
    I have this lathe and have been super happy with it. It's relatively easy to add a reversing switch to help with sanding if you are interested. I'm upgrading to the Laguna 1836 tomorrow :D

    • @AndrewSzeto

      hey I haven't use the King, but they look comparable. for the extra 100 bucks, looks like it has a light and goes in reverse (makes for a smoother finished product). you probably can't go wrong with either one. it's not necessarily the tool, but more of what you do with it! good luck!

    What kind of PPE do you use/recommend when turning? I remember hearing some horror stories from people not wearing full face shields, when they were advocating for them at school, but not sure how common that is.

    • @AndrewSzeto
      @AndrewSzeto  4 роки тому +2

      ooh good question! I think for bigger objects, a face shield would be nice. When I turn smaller things, I use googles and my respirator sort of acts as a part of my protection too. When I do my baseball bat, I usually wear a faceshield and goggles just in case it comes flying off for any reason
