You are effective salesman - just picked up a Craftex CX814. Had a :long service award burning a hole in my pocket (40 yrs) Covered the cost of the lathe - but not the CT170N belt sander that the in store salesman convinced me is best way to sharpen the wood turning tools. I have my grandfather's turning tools - from the 1940s Made in England set, still in the original box. DId not get the stand (out of stock) but planning on building my own. I retire in a couple of months and will have time to learn to turn. I have not turned since I was a kid in Dad's basement - on Grandpa's "Homecraft" lathe (which is still in the garage in pieces waiting restoration). That was 50+ years ago. Your woodturning looks amazing - love the coffee tamper and shaving brushes. .
killer dude! Dang 14" swing! Thats bigger than mine. I mean, mine was only $400. But still. Now you got me looking into buys a new lathe again! ha ha. Great info, killer shots and just all around amazing work dude!
Dude you nailed it. Love your videos. And this review was a great representation of what lathe reviews should be. You showed the different things you can turn and even got another turners perspective of it. I appreciate your honesty. Great job. 🤙
cheers man! had to! i'm a youngling in the turning world haha good to have the jedi masters have at it and document/learn! really appreciate you checking this out kyle! hope you have a great day out there!
Sad to see the element in it's last video. Don't forget to drop off your old lathe at my place ;) You don't need two lathes until you open the classroom 😉
Hi Andrew, My name is Dean Little from New Brunswick, I see this baby is on sale at BB tools for $699. Seriously considering buying this just wondering if you would still recommend it. I currently have the older craftex model clutch speed control but feel limited what I can do because it only slows to 700 rpm’s with no locking index which makes it hard to remove pieces with worm screw or even face plate. Thank you for your review and advice on this. Dean
so really depends on how you use a lathe. if it's going to be stationary, it's a great lathe! i love it outside to use mostly and it's quite a beast to move around regularly. that's my only dilemma these days, but it's been great for me!
Hey what’s up I just bought a craftex cx814 and I can’t seem to get the wood to not vibrate my tools are sharp and I’m not new to wood turning I’ve been turning for a little over a year I think it’s the bearings or something but it’s brand new the guys at the store sead it seems fine did u have any issues with yours.
hmmm, no i did not have that problem (bot detrimentally anyhow). do you still have the problem when you turn up the rpm's?! is it spindle work?! there's usually a bit of shake, but i find it gets decent once you turn up the rpm's, or you turn it a bit and squared edges become cylindrical. otherwise, what kind of stand are you using/is is fastened well?!
Thanks for this overview. How's this lathe holding up for you? I'm trying to figure out what lathe to buy, and I'm circling back to this one as a good choice for doing some turning. Small enough to bring inside to the warm for the winter.
@@AndrewSzeto Thanks, good to hear. Bowls are my main objective. I'm thinking I will probably head into BB tomorrow and pick one up. I was able to get a few minutes in there yesterday and this model seemed a whole lot beefier than the Laguna 1216 that I had been favouring (mainly because of the apparently better motor control electronics). But I'm thinking that given how it performed for Simon, that shouldn't be an issue. I have lived in Merrickville for 35 years and never knew of Simon's shop. He does some great turning.

Thank you from Newmarket ON. I am excited to see Canadians specifically Ontarian on UA-cam.
Damn I really dont have space for a lathe but turning videos really get me.
haha fun! it's an interesting niche! i don't really get a ton of views on my turning vids, but hopefully in time 🤷🏻♂️
Nice film. Well done review. Nice lathe. Mahalo for sharing! : )
thanks a million as always 🙏🏼🙏🏼
This thing is really cool. I learned a bunch about the lathe. Awesome job.
haha thanks luke! gonna cook up some other projects with these folks (the canadian equivalent of grizzly)
@@AndrewSzeto a Canadian grizzly is kinda meta
Came back to this video, stoked on learning to lathe! 🙏🏽

haha cheers man! at least you get to enjoy the fruits of the labour haha! hope you're well baby!
@@AndrewSzeto I am enjoying the hell out of that tamp. I feel like it needs to be in a glass case because it's so beautiful!
@@grumpywoodchucker haha love you!
so just bought this lathe, is there any concern of running in reverse and the chuck spinning off. My chuck does not have a set screw or anything.

it's holding up ok! i like both of my lathes pretty decently! if you're not turning bowls, then the 813 would do the trick too.
