I made an all-wood jobby with 7/8" melamine pulleys, old heat pump 220V blower motor and used nails for the for the drive spur. Then made 25 spindles for an antique church pew. Worked great! About 24" between centers. Like to have a Laguna or Rikon but I might just build a stronger wooden one with a DC = PWM'd motor from an old tread mill.

It's amazing where a little ingenuity will bring you. I wave old washer and dryer motors with an eye to building some of my own homebuilt equipment. I built a jig for my drill press and did a little turning with that. Vertical turning was a bit awkward.

iv had this for about 4-5 years now and has been a great lathe and id say its a good starter. it is cheep and it shows if had to fix a lot over time. biggest downer for me is that it will not spin slow. starting from a log to bowl you want a slow speed this lathe will not give that to you and it is dangerous.

Can't argue with that. It'll do a lot of good work. It is far better than the machine I started with.

Had this lather for almost a year before i finally figured out that you dont need the arm for the tool rest. Had been mucking around and cursing how to position the tool rest for a long time and didnt even like turning anymore. Once i figured out to take the arm off and just put the tool rest on the base, changed entirely. Oh, well. Live and learn. Hope this helps someone else.

I purchased one on Amazon almost right away. The Jacob's chuck that fits has an MT2 or Morse Taper Two. They should be easy to get. It will fit the Morse Taper fitting on both the tailstock and the headstock.
