    One other thing you need to add to that comparison chart.....PRICE. LOL

    Totally unfair comparison, the keylock has a larger outside diameter which will be stronger in aluminium but also needs a larger hole to insert, the keylock also destroys the hole when removing, helicoils are easily removed with no damage to the hole and can be replaced with a pair of pointy nosed pliers.

      Exactly! Hence Installing the ACME key lock inserts in a cylinder head wall of a motorcycle is impossible as their diameter is way to big. The wall will be gone. As well as the torque used on aluminium cylinder heads is way lower han they been testing. Installing helicoils is not time consuming at all if you did it once. Taking out the broken off end is a must...who leaves them in??? ...and german technology requires special tools. Those helicoils are always sold in a set. I have been installing many of them and never changed the tapping tool!

    the big headache with a helicoil is needing a special tap because a helicoil is the same thread pitch, but a larger diameter. with a keyed insert, they are typically made with the outer thread conforming to some larger size UN or metric thread, and no tool special tool is needed as the tangs can be driven in with a punch. however the trick to helicoils is using what they are referring to as a prewinder, most kits do not have this, its just a smooth rod that can grab the tang, it makes installation a pita. i've always just made my own prewinder, take a bolt the size you want to use and grind about 7/8 of the end of it way and the tooth thats left will grab the tang and rest of the remaining threads will help stabilize the wire from jumping threads during installation.

      Simple answer: Just buy the Heli coil kit. It comes with all the tools. I installed many of them and my tapping tool is still the original! But i also use it just for aluminium heads and for the helicoils only!

      @@reinhardtrippmacher8776 but again, that's only 1 size. You need a tap for every size and they aren't nearly as strong as keyserts, plus depending on your hole sometimes you need a bottoming tap because of a very shallow blind hole. Also, I use them in fixturing to temporarily change a thread size on a hole for mounting things, I just snap the tangs off before putting it in so I can remove it later.

    I use neither.drill and tap a allen head cap screw.drill and tap the hole that is stripped out.Thread the cap screw into the hole with locktite 272.Cut the bolt off and grind flush.Been doing this for twenty years and never had a failure.I actually made up different sizes in my spare time to make the repair faster

    looks like Keysert inserts. Installation is the same as with Helicoil. Drill, tap and insert. 3100 pounds force for the Helicoil are more than sufficient for most applications

      Well said. For most anything that is not an aircraft or a bulldozer, Helicoils are affordable and more than up to the job.

    Tell me at what time would someone feel the need to put 4600 lb of torque on a 1/4-20 bolt!?

    Pretty one sided view here, why did you show the helicoil insert being installed without using the proper tool. If the mechanic does not know how to do the job properly he should be no where near it, you also omitted to say that helicoil inserts should be installed with a coating of threadlock, attention to detail ! must try harder.

    • @jonathangaliano2617
      @jonathangaliano2617 6 років тому +1

      Actually you aren't supposed to use any type of thread lock on helicoils. It can cause them to spin

    • @salvadorebertolone
      @salvadorebertolone 5 років тому

      it depends on the application. for fasteners installed iaw certain aerospace requirements you cant use a threadlocking compound. personally i prefer to use a keyed insert in nearly all applications, however sometimes a helicoil is the better choice, ie, fasteners that see large and frequent heat cycling.
