As someone who grew up on the Mackinac Island in the summers, and Mackinaw City the rest of the year, I can say going to the island in the winter is the absolute best. Especially if there's a nice blanket of snow. It's so peaceful.

Being a private is tough enough...on Christmas being away from family is almost unbearable for some. Having an officer that is abusive compounds the problem. Sad story which unfortunately has been repeated many times in many places as you know from being away during Christmas. I was lucky enough not to have duty on Christmas and went home. When I returned to duty there was always an incident where someone was not able to handle the stress of being away from home. I spent the last 4 years of my reserve career counseling young men and women on readiness and career planning. Some people were deployed overseas and thank God they all came back unhurt physically but mentally they were very hurt by deployments. Thank you for sharing this story!

Dang, if Andrew Jackson thought his behavior was jacked up, you know it had to be bad. And a great holidays to you too, from a fellow vet who spent some Christmases and such way too far from home. Love your channel!

Thanks Chuck. I discovered you channel and have been binge watching, which required drinking less, but worth it.
I’ve driven right by your discoveries for decades because I was in a hurry to get straight to woods, waters and bugs……bugs.
Age and reason acquired, using you as a comfortable diversion.
    Thanks.

I've lived in Northern Michigan since 1992. A Tar Heel by birth, I came to the Wolverine state via enlistment into the USCG, serving on the CGC Mackinaw (WAGB-83) from 92 to 95, Grand Haven and then Sault Ste. Marie. I retired and still live up here. It can be VERY depressing. The lake effect snow is oppressing and relentless, the days are short in the winter and even in our modern day and age, it can be hard to keep your spirits up. I can't even comprehend what it was like for men stationed there in the late 1700's and 1800's.
Mackinaw City is a PUNY little place today and I can't figure it was much of anything back then.
    Thanks for the story!

When I read that story about the bullet wound back in the day I thought it was an amazing advancement. I think I’d have more than a few drinks if I was there all winter.❄️ I’ll remember those soldiers and sailors on far off duty and send something their way.

Well I'll be! I learned about the bullet hole in the stomach and the research that followed, but had never heard that it took place on Mackinac Island. I had to take some nursing courses in college, because I'm in a related field (special ed, which includes students with medical conditions). That hole in the stomach story was repeated in more than one of my classes. Being that all my schooling was at Michigan colleges and universities, I would have thought that the Michigan connection might have been a source of pride for my professors.

In a lot of ways the knowledge gained by Beaumont was revolutionary and you'd think it would be a source of pride, however the true story isn't so nice. Alexis Saint Martin was ultimately taken advantage of by Doctor Beaumont, he tried to run away a few times but was hunted down and brought back each time. Unfortunately the truth kinda ruins any of the pride.

Very Good Stories Tied All This Together. Heard Of The Stomach Bullet Hole Occurance But Did Not Realize It Happened At Mackinaw. Hey! So That's Where Beaumont Hospital Got It's Name!?
So As A Rare Occasional Drinker Of Whisky I Found Poppins' Description Of Her Drink Of Whisky As "Tastes Like I Licked The Old Wood Floor At Grandma's Cottage" To Be Spot On! it Would Have Been More Lawful If You Had That Tiny Bottle Of Whisky In A Tiny Brown Bag. But Fortunately You Got Away With It!
    Great Job! Again!!

    • @RestlessViking

It is, in fact, where Beaumont Health got its name. and thanks!
