  • A Chinese exam from a New York high school recently shocked Chinese netizens. The first character on the paper is so hard even Chinese people can barely recognize it. But “Jiu,” an obscure Chinese character, is not at all difficult for Richard Sears, who reads not only simplified Chinese characters but also traditional ones that were in use 3500 years ago.

The professor is wrong about the popularity of Chinese language because technology (ie. instant translation with Gooogol glass) will allow everyone on Earth to communicate with each other without learning more than one language.
Chinese language characters are arranged in a rectangular/square form (2-dimensional) while Latin alphabets are arranged in a line (1-dimensional), therefore Chinese language is at a higher level of human language development.
People say English (or Inglish) language is based on sound but to me is not completely true since a non-Latin speaker will not know the sound of each alphabets until taught how to, and plus evert words in an English dictionary have another set of characters on how to correctly pronounce that word.
Vast majority of Chinese characters is based on sound, an educated Chinese would most likely able to pronounce a new word/character based on the similarity of certain basic character of that word.

japanese used to be a popular foreign language to study based on the amount of media japan exports worldwide, but japanese as well as Chinese, or any foreign language for that matter are no longer popular subjects to study. While the study of the japanese language enjoys renewed interest in China, as well as elsewhere in Asia, Chinese and chinese characters (Kanji) overall, is too difficult to learn even for a native speaker of Chinese or japanese at the higher levels.

I hope you don't really think that Chinese characters are at a higher level of language development. Just consider the fact, that all writing systems start as "2-dimensional" pictograms. Chinese characters have never gone beyond this stage for some reason.
Other languages usually progress to syllable-based characters (like Korean and partially Japanese with their Hiragana) and eventually to a phonetic alphabet where every sound is mapped to a character.
Whilst pictographs may be more efficient for reading and printing, they are a lot less useful for writing and usually a lot more ambiguous. Furthermore, they most definitely require a lot more effort to learn.
A child in the west is fully literate at age 7 or 8, even from a poor family. In China only highly educated people are ever fully literate. Now that information technology is introducing phonetic writing and auto-completion to Chinese children, this is changing in a good way.
You don't judge a tool by how hard it is to use, but by how effective it is at doing what it's supposed to do.

Your comments have more credibility if you have some basic proficiency in the Chinese language.
FYI, Chinese have at least 260+ "alphabets" of building block of strokes, hence have more potential for adding newly invented basic concept into the dictionary and yet the number of strokes remain average, for another 5,000 years. Also Chinese language mostly reuse one to three existing words for new concepts and borrowed names without inventing new words.
      - Chinese sentences can arranged in any direction
      - very compacted hence easy on the eyes and no waste of spaces in a paragraph or inconsistency of width in software menu design or on geographic map
      - spoken language have at least 4 tones hence cost to music

More people will speak Chinese worldwide if the Chinese govt switch to the Hanyu pinyin form. It is based on the Roman script and easier to learn than having to memorise thousands of pictograms.
