  • In this video I provide a brief overview of how I came across my Alexander Model 3A pantograph and demonstrate how the machine can be used to create dial chapter rings.
    Overall I'm pleased with the result, and learned a lot during the process. I'll be trying out some different templates and refining my production process over the next few weeks, watch for updates on my Instagram account.

    Hello -- I came across this video while looking for a way to sell my recently deceased husband's DME three dimensional pantograph. Like yours it engraves, mills, copies, etc, and has a range of reduction/enlarging ratios. I've been trying to explain what it is to some people that I thought could help me sell it, and found myself for once in my life somewhat inarticulate. (My field is finance!) Now I can just use your video to explain. You did a great job! Thank you for doing this video.

I'll take a picture then, and also round up what accessories I can find, and email the pictures to you. I think there are some collets (don't know if I spelled this right) and probably some cutters beside some letter sets. Thank you for this.

    Great video! Really happy you got that new machine, I know we talked about the bracelets and that’s not something you wanted to create because of time constraints, etc. this machine is a game changer for you and I can’t wait to see the beautiful things you create with it!

    Just saw a large Pantograph for sale for $500, someone will make a killing if its gets used and not sent to scrap...if only i had all the space and no budget

    I have run Deckel 3D Pamtografh years ago. You should have the cutter MUCH shorter.

    Nice video. Do you hold the tool so far from the collet for the video? Also I would seek for tools with cutting length as close as the thickness cut.

      I had the tools sticking out further so I could get a better shot of the work and cutters. For actual production pieces, I plan on choking up on the cutters much more, as I noticed some deflection particularly while climb cutting the outside circumference.

    Maybe add a pneumatic actuator to the spindle feed and then have a foot pedal-valve so you can keep both hands on the stylus?

    I just took charge of a Spanish clone of this machine, I see you are using a Urethane belt to drive the spindle; are you making them up yourself, what diameter are you using and is it better or very similar to the original rope type?

      The rope belting is much better than urethane in my opinion. It has much less stretch, and doesn't slap around like urethane does at high RPM.

    Great video but I believe you're looking at the design of the master in the wrong light. Firstly I'd be going for as much ratio as you can print, the bigger the better (i.e. more accurate work and the imperfections of the master (3D print lines) won't be noticeable on the work. So 3 or 4:1 ratio easily. Secondly make your master with slots so you can't deviate out side of them. This will eliminate flat spots & bumps in your cuts where the stylus may have skipped (not against the wall of the master). Thirdly you had some breakout on the walls of the master because it was quite a thin groove depth. The stylus is better as a single pin (i.e. not stepped like yours) of say 1/8". The pin bottom determines height (instead of the flange in your case) therefore the top height can be much higher and won't chip. Hope this helps.     From my experience, I believe the noise you are hearing is caused by worn ball bearings. I repair tools for a living and run across this problem a LOT. The ball bearings have run dry at some point in time and have scared the races making them hiss. Oiling them will usually get rid of some of the noise but will not fix the problem as the races are already compromised.

    Why a flat shoulder on the stylus? Would a bevelled edge affect the outcome? It would increase template visibility.

    I had one of those - had to scrap it because it was in the way when a crane was moving my big lathe - I still have the large table - wish I I had kept it all - when I talked to the British company that made it I was told it's a copy of a German Decal and the English company made spares for the German - apparently interchangeable

    The first thing you need to do is SHORTEN your cutter lenghth.

    Single flute spiral endmills work very well for this as the offer better chip evacuation

    You will get longer life from your cutters and cleaner cuts if you use a cold air nozzle or an air/alcohol mist (with proper ventilation).

      Yeah. Effectively the same as a GK21. But the collets are different.

    Enjoyed your video. I have the same machine and wonder if your's came with a full set of collets? Mine didn't and they seem impossible to find. My dream is to have the spindle modified to a standard ER-11. Hope you post my vids

      Unfortunately mine only came with a single 1/8" collet. I was able to find two other collets, they are in rough shape and I'm not sure exactly what size they are; something just smaller than 3/8" and 1/4", probably metric. I'm planning on regrinding them to standard sizes. You can also use a Deckel GK21 spindle assembly, and use the Deckel collets that are still available to purchase new.

    I noticed on your first cuts , the tool tip was changing angle at the bearing above . If the shank was shorter , would it be more accurate , say for milling out numbers ?

      I've since rebuilt the spindle on this machine, which has fixed a lot of the noise/runout issues. A shorter shank tool will always be more rigid.

    When cutting the inside and outside diameters, would a groove in the printed pattern make it more comfortable? A groove giving you both inside and outside contact on the stylus, that way you can concentrate on smoothness of cut and not so much guidance.

      That definitely does help with cut consistency. I've also given up on 3d printed patterns, and just manually machine them on my mill and lathe out of HDPE.

      You can blow up patterns by reversing the cutter and stylus.

      I don't have a tool and cutter grinder, so I'm just purchasing the cutters as they are.

    No cnc....by hand.......with an electric mill.
