WOW!!! Here I thought that an ‘ornamental or Rose engine lathe’ was simply an antique jeweler’s or watchmaker’s lathe that’s been dressed up with some shiny brass cogs and is functional - but mostly serves as a decoration!?!? Now I feel a bit foolish, but I THANK YOU for running through this, as I had no idea that those rosettes were serving as patterns that caused the movement necessary to etch those patterns! And it’s a manual machine?!?! And wow, a Grizzly brand compound X-Y table that only cost about 100$ is that capable? I’m wondering just how you steadied that sliding table, and if any of the wiggles that you’re noticing is at all due to the ACME threading. I literally filled my ACME threads with about six or seven strands of dental floss (I thought of plumbing tape, too) to try and diminish that wiggle. I’m noticing that wherever are those contact points that have a lot of space surrounding them, well you know. So maybe if I bore out some holes to drive in maybe four grub screws so to center it better, or better would be a spacer that slides right in so to occupy the empty spaces at those points of contact. If you have a lathe and can do those ACME threads, maybe then you could just make your own leadscrews that better accommodate the parts that move along them. I really am hopeful and am praying for you to do something like that, instead of shelling out more$ to do away with that one and replace it with something else. It looks like a decent bargain for such an affordable price. Im super stoked to see videos like these, as they help me to see how anything is possible and also inspire me to tackle mechanical challenges where I never knew I could see things that way before! Thanks a million!

I’m fortunate to meet a well known name in OT, who is building me a simplified version of a traditional rose engine, but with all the functionality. I will build the cabinetry. I’m so impressed with your build and your guilloche work. I’m in the process of buying a lathe and mill and am jumping in with both feet. I hope your journey is going well.

Why doesn’t he show each progression?

I don't understand how the pattern wheel translates from an X movement, as it follows the pattern, into the Y oscillation movement? Could you explain that please. Also you seem to be putting pressure on the cutter rather than an absolute movement in Y, is this by feel and how do you prevent too deep, or shallow a cut per rotation? This absolutely fascinates me and your videos are great, thanks.

1:57 my small milling machine was like that, so I used a ball screw zero backlash unit on the descending mill head. Works fabulously. 😊.

Okay the work is good but the soundtrack is not what I’d expect from a watchmaker. That lazy bassSnare. Working to full disgust of not syncopation. The soundtrack sucks ass. And doesn’t give the watchmaker and solid points here . The music is off on time I tonic because your are designing a watch which should always be on time. Pick better music

US really needs to get with the metric system

I have no abilities to make a thing like this. What amazed me, was the number of steps taken to make the finished ( except for numbers and hands) dial. I would probably make a real mess of it if I tried. I would take the brass bar, face it in the lathe, part it off, glue it to a support and mill out the 12 recesses, then mill the pattern, then plate it. Where is that wrong? ( sorry, should have said, the dial is superb)

Can you tell us more about these machines you are using?

I just took charge of a Spanish clone of this machine, I see you are using a Urethane belt to drive the spindle; are you making them up yourself, what diameter are you using and is it better or very similar to the original rope type?
