so one piece is so good normally I don't want to watch the fillers even if their good.i want to continue the canon story...but in naruto bleach dragonball I want to watch the fillers even if their bad cause the main storylines disappoint me...is that normal for most people?....I love the animes over the mangas for those shows but for one piece..manga all day...oda gives a shit...unlike the other authors who are lazy imo

    • @razkable

fillers can be misplaced and arcs of it can piss me off...I want new things...a great "filler" quote un quote as its not in the manga and its not important to the main current arc going on or main characters but is important to a characters narrative and to me the perfect filler is episode 389 of shippuden...it adds so much to a characters backstory that the manga skims over that it made me realize why I like said character even more adding something unique to their already established backstory to put it in better context ..although it was technically mostly written but the author as a tie in to a film that was coming out to give context to a character in the films focus hence its timing but whatever...I will always say that filler ep is better than kishis canon chapter about a samurai vs hanzo that is so pointless...I cant believe that's in the manga..he really put focus on it?..lol..

My favorite part of this arc was that we were introduced to the shortest lived member of the Straw Hat crew, who lives on in our hearts thanks to his heroic sacrifice, staying behind in order to give the others the time to escape. The man, the myth, the legend: Con D. Oriano.

If this ever got "canonized" by Oda (a not unheard of thing in.. fiction), I'd love to see this lie become the truth as well, with Condoriano snapping and convincing himself he really is a crew member, up to and including later showing up to, this time, INTENTIONALLY help them to escape from... say... Egghead Island.

@@Dark_Jaguar In order to make this Canon Oda only needs to have a slight hint at Commander Jonathan. Either by a small one picture where he reads the newspaper about the crew, or him being a person called by the Marines etc. The only thing missing then would be the Manga owning up to it in some way that this happened. It's honestly a lot of potential wasted somewhat otherwise.

Sure, Luffy says 'see ya, old fortress guy' while cracking a huge smile and waving at the commander, but it felt satisfying instead of the usual 'hah, got ya there you dumbass'. My favorite One Piece filler episodes always ended up being those one off episodes. Stuff like the filler episodes when the crew gets to Logue town. Luffy visiting Gold Rogers old drinking hole, Usopp having a duel, Sanji participating in a cook off. I love the episodes just post Enies Lobby for similar reasons. Zoro getting adopted by an overly attached foster mom, Sanji getting salt, Usopp trying to think of a way to rejoin the crew without demeaning himself. I think the reason I love these sorts of filler episodes is because they don't hold on desperately to that need to be another story driven arc with a big bad villain. I'd love it if One Piece had more episodes with a relaxed tone like that. The action packed plot of One Piece is usually good and all, but its sometimes a little exhausting when you go from long ass story arc to ANOTHER long ass story arc.

    • @DemonPikachu
      @DemonPikachu 6 років тому +98

Yass Rambles, those one-off episodes do have an unspoken strength to them; in world-building, having some breathing room in between arcs, and seeing how the straw hat crew deals with individual challenges relating to their abilities and aspirations. I don't often get to mention, but I actually like and appreciate certain characters getting special focus for their own personal plot event! It really helps show who they are and how they problem solve things, often without the main characters' help.

    • @Rautakello
      @Rautakello 6 років тому +46

@@DemonPikachu Exactly my point! Thats probably why aside from this rare arc, most of the filler that try to emulate that action packed story style of the main story just can't cut it for me. Aside from just the obvious dip in quality in all aspects, they just try to copy the flow of the main story, poorly. I can't think of any filler in the show that tries the longer story arc format and gets it right. Best case scenarios are small one or two episode short stories like the Marine Rookie Arc which had three episodes. That one kept the story nice and contained, without much of an overarching goal, aside from "WE NEED FOOD." Love that little filler arc.

Yeah, i really like when the crew take their time to explore the islands and also expand the OP World even more.
There is some context on why One Piece is more focused on action and the consequences of said action in the latest arcs but i really miss feeling like i was in an actual adventure and not another generic battle shounen...
I always felt like One Piece wasn't focused on battles at all, they were there to move the plot onwards but the focus was always the adventure, the exploration of a world and all the wacky cultures and creatures that Oda could think off, how the straw hats would end up changing said world and so on

The manga only had the old man from Long Ring Long Land, the barrel race, the Groggy Ring match, and Foxy vs Afro Luffy, and then it went straight to meeting Aokiji and heading to Water 7. It doesn't drag in the manga nearly as badly.

We can be a better fan base by providing really reasonable constructive criticism when needed like the top comment above against foxy arc.
I don't see a fan base being blindly ok with everything produced as a good thing because this attitude often leads to be overprotective or biased towards the series.
It's kinda like a person that can admit his own mistake and say sorry and try to improve is way better than someone who is always apologetic for himself and makes a lot of excuses and always blame others.

Sanji and Chopper both have their ideals tested, as both essentially blow their cover to do what they feel is proper. Chopper basically volunteers himself and Nami to help the overworked doctor with her patients and win her trust; she is instrumental in helping them escape.

When you look at the wider plot sturcture, Jonathan is the actual the protagonist of this arc and the Strawhats are the secondary main characters. The arc is about Jonathan trying to protect his beloved base, comrades and peaceful life from an inspector trying to shut them down by finding a convenient excuse to justify the existence of the base in the Strawhat's "invasion". Who by his own cunning succeeds by the end, not just demonstrating the full power of the base, his own ability and his team's, but making their failure entirely the fault of the inspector and simultaneously letting the Strawhats, who have served their purpose and who he may actually like, get away.
I think it's always very satisfying in stories when they have sort of an accompanying arc to the main character's quest like this. OP itself has done this quite a few times, such as with Coby's and Helmeppo's chapter, or Usopp's kid followers, or Vivi, or Norland, or even Hiluluk and Kureha and so on. And it's great because you get to see how the main cast touches and changes the lives of others (sometimes unaware). It gives you the immense satisfaction of making you fall in love with side characters and see their arcs come to a satisfactory conclusion while simultaneously being promised more new adventures with new people. One more reason the G8 arc is very OnePiece-ish because it is true to this formula.

Like i said in the previous upload. The reason this Arc is so good is because ti was written by Oda himself.
The whole G Marines Bases were introduced into the series.
Oda was planning to make this an actual Arc in the manga, but felt he was dragging the eventual Enies Lobby Arc. As such he gave the entire script to Toei, and used that Arc to get ahead in a few chapters.
There's a reason this Arc is one of the best non-canon arcs ever. Because it technically is canon

I also loved seeing them be a competent antagonist without them having a devil fruit user to just come in and attempt to 1v1 Luffy. This arc also has some of the most funny scenes ever. Luffy’s face, Condoriano and the Octopus scene and more. In my opinion this arc was

It really shows how much the characters have changed since meeting Luffy.

In this arc (episode 200 to be exact) is one of the funniest One Piece moments (for me). Sanji is trying to help Usopp bust open the bars on his jail cell so he can escape (in front of onlooking marines who are amused, thinking he has no chance of breaking him out). Usopp tells Sanji to reach into his pocket and use one of his impact dials. Sanji tells the marines that he's going to "show them something", puts the dial up against the bars, presses it... and... instead of causing an explosion it just says "This fine-tempered snake?" (in the english dub, "Who, this well mannered snake?) to the utter confusion of all the marines.
It was a line that Usopp said about Nola (one of my all-time favorite characters) in Sky Island in an earlier episode and apparently accidentally recorded on a tone dial (which they both mistook for an impact dial).
The scene just completely caught me off guard and I can still remember how hard I was laughing (all these years later).

I also think this was the best possible time in the story for a plot like this of infiltrating a marine base, because the status of the crew in this moment is perfect for it. After Alabasta, Luffy, Zoro, and Robin have official bounties and bounty posters, although Robin’s only has a photo of her as a child. Sanji, Usopp, Nami, and Chopper, however, do not have bounties and are still anonymous, though Chopper is still extremely conspicuous. That means roughly half of the crew can blend in with the marines almost seamlessly, however Luffy, Zoro, and Chopper, the three most likely to cause a scene, have to be sneaky. After Enies Lobby, all of them (except Usopp and maybe Sanji, but he always pulls off some genius subterfuge regardless) have their faces out there on wanted posters.

Military people have families. It's not uncommon to have parts of your base dedicated to families. There's an elementary school on the base I used to be stationed to. Which means kids, which means pediatricians.

It is explained, g-8 isn't very popular, so at the time to send a doctor they didn't even flinch about sending anyone who had the word doctor in them, and they were also short on medical staff, so in their minds any doctor is better than no doctor

I am so happy more people share my opinion on G8! I re-watch the movies occasionally, but I re-watch the G8 arc the most often, because it's so good, really funny while still being true to the characters, and is just the right amount of length. I am just reading the manga because the anime is really long winded some times and best for binging one arc at a time, but I love doing both, especially when coming over new filler banter and episodes

One more thing that G8 did is show off everyone's individual strengths. Nami was shown as the strategist she is, Sanji showcased his ideals and how he puts them into action via his cooking, Usopp became the embodiment of "fake it 'til you make it" and did so, well. Nico Robin had her skills as a covert operative shown in the capture and replacement of the arriving commander, Chopper had his own aspirations and skill put to the test, holding both his identity and several enemy lives in the balance, showing his dedication to being a doctor above being anything else. Luffy was put into a careful situation, walked up to just about everything against him, and kept going, showing his willing to press on despite everything. Zoro was surrounded by gunmen, thrown in prison, and almost blown up, and he still kept a level head, showing his level of confidence in his ability, and the level of focus he has on top.

You know what I really like about this video? It's not just someone talking about a thing they like, it's a discussion of WHY they like it and WHY it's an effective piece of writing. It's a great example of a likeable antagonist, someone who is decent and relatable while still being opposed to the protagonists of the story. This arc doesn't make the Straw Hats out as Villain Protagonists either, both factions have decent folk who are simply on opposite sides of an ideology (and the legal system it's tied to). I think that anyone interested in writing would do well watching this video and the story arc in question.

a lot of youtube reviews are just telling me what happened..i like to hear peoples thoughts on themes and naratives and characterization more so then development and their ideals..im tired of just recap and one or 2 words on how they liked it or didn't and who changed..theres more to a story then that imo..a character changing is suppose to be gradual and rare and says more about who they were or became then how great their written...I liked characters that are mostly finished products too cause if their personality is fine then who cares if they don't change much..

Jonathan could've been Daddy Mastersson's brother, and been almost cannon. They look similar enough 🤷🏽‍♀️
I wish they would've cared enough about the One Piece anime to make *all* arcs as well made as this filler.
I hope that they'll one day do a complete seasonal remaster/remake, with at least 2 chapters per episode and a clear focus on detail.
I'd watch OP all over again for that TBH. OP has a top tier story, but the animation is so lack luster because they insist on it being weekly.

Ok, 3 years later it has been confirmed that they will do what I asked...
Hope I live to see the day, unlike our fallen nakama who won't live to see the end of OP 🙏🏽

I really agree. Vice Admiral Jonathan obviously holding back the whole time. He even knew Robin in disguise. And I found it funny he also said Condoriano on Sheperd that was absolutely funny.
