the thing about luffy is that unlike most protagonists who are leaders (mostly because the story revolves around them or because they are the strongest), luffy is made to be the leader. on purpose, rather than by default. the crew gives him their strength so he can use it all to lead them to their dreams. i love the moment when he lists all the things he can't do in arlong park because it shows that he knows to delegate

I disagree, Luffy’s character arc isn’t starting off as the leader and neither is any other protagonists story arc, Naruto, Mob, Eren, Asta and Bojji have the story arc of boy to man. Luffy’s is from man to leader. I got this idea from O’Hara (good UA-camr you should watch if you don’t already) as the story progresses he becomes a better leader that the crew members slowly start to rely on and gain respect for him, Zoro himself said it. At first none of them joined to specifically meet Luffy’s goal, but to reach their own personal goals. It wasn’t until time went on that they started to prioritize Luffy’s goal over their own. We see this from his first appearance to what op is at now. He wouldn’t hesitate to cut Luffy off if his goals weren’t being met, but look at him now and in Thriller Bark, he was willing to give up his life for Luffy. The same goes for all the strawhats but it’s most prominent in Zoro.

Power is displayed more realistically in this example. In our modern day physical strength doesn’t automatically make you the top dog in society. Power comes in the form of money and influence. Luffy starts out pretty strong, but has no money and no influence. As he progresses towards One piece (the epitome of money and influence) he grows physically yes, but he also grows in influence through his decision on whether or not to flex his power. He doesn’t beat up anyone unless given a reason. His simple mind both gets him into trouble, but he also makes decisions that make sense according to his moral code. Even though Luffy’s end goal is one piece he never wavers from his own moral code in order to gain unlike the selfish “bad guys” that he beats up. This teaches both children AND adults that moral values outweigh money and power when it comes to having a positive influence on society and that society will aid you willingly when you display the right morals. Having strength and money gives you influence/power, but making difficult moral choices will earn you respect and prestige.

I agree that Luffy ordering his crew to run was the best decision he could ever make. Being a good leader is knowing when to fight and when to flee. When faced with a threat that is much stronger then you and you know it, running away is the best option for the safety of you and everyone else around you. Yes Luffy is dense, stupid, a little selfish as times, and brutally honest but he is also kind, brave, emotionally intelligent, funny, supportive, inspiring, and one heck of a captain. This is why he's my favorite out of all the other straw hat members. I love all my straw hat babies but Luffy is by far my favorite. Yes my favorite is the mc, I'm basic I know but it's the truth.

2:40 that point about the traits not being inherent to Luffy is so key and overlooked, people really underestimate how impressionable young kids are. And Luffy saw the right thing in the right guy, and had the conviction to decide what would be best for him.
This is overlooked so much when it feels like it's just natural for Luffy to be the way he is, but we can see in little panels, one I remember is in Skypiea when he was about to punch Enel and had the bell stretch his arm completely back and you can see his face, in that moment he wants to let go of the bell
But immediately he remembers the faces of people for whom he's doing what he's doing, it's so subtle but says a lot, that even he is not this perfect guy who never falters, but someone who's also trying to align himself to his ideal everyday.

But once I started watching the show, his electric attitude really grew on me and had me rooting for him super quick. Great video,a good summary of why i think that Luffy is the best mc a shonen ever had and one of the best mcs in general.
He's so simple on a surface level, but it's exactly this that makes him so interesting.
His convinctions are extremely strong and he always did everything he could to not let anyone or himself down.
What really got me was his love for freedom. It's very hard to put this into words (mostly because i'm not a native english speaker lol),but i will try.
One piece is exactly my idea of an infinite adventure, and luffy's love for it almost moves me to tears sometimes. Just look at that scene where rayleigh asked him if he wanted to know where the one piece was.
He's opposite to everything else you can expect from the world of one piece, just like you said. I'm not sure if this derivates from some kind of purity that shanks doesn't have (luffy never killed someone),but i'm inclined to think that it's not just that. His love for adventure and freedom isn't something he's obsessed with in a negative kind of way,but it's something he'll gladly share with anyone who wants to. He's pure light in such a corrupted world.

13:10 I know this is a 3 year old video, but I still felt like commenting on this. You say that Doffy was not born like this, that his environment caused him to gain this anger towards the world. I both agree and disagree. Nobody would argue that Doffy would turn out exactly like he did if he had experienced a different environment, but it is worth pointing out that Rosinante experienced the exact same thing that Doffy did, and turned out how he did, completely different from Doffy.
You could argue that the difference between them is still environmental, that Rosinante was raised by a good marine (Sengoku) while Doffy was raised by the worst piece of garbage (Trebol), but I'd still point out that Rosinante turned to tears and sadness over his family's situation, while Doffy turned to anger and hatred, even before they split off to experience different things.
Ultimately though, I do agree with your points, this is just a small nitpick. I like this video a lot, subscribed

Wow. I've never seen a sincere character analysis that I so fundamentally disagree with. I feel like you'd say the cherry pie was to die for, and the drink tasted like death. That scene in Jaya where Luffy and BB turn out to be incredibly similar but perfectly opposite at the same time.
Punching out Saint Charlos? That wasn't a mistake. That was an inevitability. Right after that, he explicitly apologized to his crew for making a decision like that without consulting them. And they said, in basically as many words, that they knew he would do that, and they supported him absolutely.

    • @Phyrior

My personal issue with that point of the video is that he says it's Luffy disregarding Shanks' lessons. I'd say no. Put Shanks in that position and that's exactly what Shanks would do. You don't fuck with Luffy or Shanks' friends. Straight out.

Oda nailed Luffy's simplicity character writing to the point where i think he is a S-tier character. There are a lot of simplistic characters in animanga but none of them come close to how Oda has potrayed it.

The Charlos incident was not Luffy being wrong. It was him making a judgement call- Is it worth putting it all on the line to save a friend, or to keep his temper and allow her to be sold? He made the right choice, just not the smart one.

    • @mapleseerope9381
      @mapleseerope9381 Рік тому +2

He definitely does not exclusively do the right thing. And the man himself said he's not a hero. He can be a good person and a good leader and an inspiration without being a hero. It's more of a rejection of the expectations put upon a hero, because Luffy wants to freedom to choose what he wants to do in a situation not the expectations put upon him to always do "the right thing". Doing the right thing is also inherently subjective.

I never thought about how Luffy is perfectly fine with being punched around by his own crew. But you make a good point. Just like Shanks, he's not a man who would start a needless fight, so to him it doesn't really matter. If Nami punches him because he spent all the money, he doesn't have a reason to butt back because his leadership style just isn't about that.

luffys perception of the term hero is just misinformed when someone says "their my hero" its really only one action they needed to have done, i think the confusion is between being a hero and being a super hero, luffy is absolutely a hero, but in no way sees himself as someone actively looking for people to save@@saniyaatique6545

Him punching the celestial dragon....It had to happen. The lesson was not to hold his anger when a friend of his is getting treated like shit and be more radical. It was a reminder to Luffy and the crew that they were still too weak to carry on to the new world with their moral standards and fullfil their big dreams. Therefore, they train to get stronger. Taking on the world just protect his hurt friends no matter what the stakes are is a fundamental part of who Luffy is. It is not something for him to change, but to make up for with his strength. Get it? If you do and notice something I'm missing, please tell me.

The photos that Imu has also are all characters who could considered looking for, or a pusher for freedom - though Blackbeard's idea of freedom is true lawlessness. Vivi stands out more than any other princess of the world kingdoms, and her father too. Shirahoshi has both unconditional kindness like her mother, that was even able to sway a celestial dragon, but also the power of Poseidon. And Luffy, being the embodiment of freedom and his huge influence on those around him. These four are all some of the biggest threats to the WG in the way that they will not follow authority over their morals, and that they will not "behave" in the face of the highest order in the world - even Shanks goes to the Gorosei peacefully. It doesn't matter how physically strong they are, but their influence on others.

Luffy doesn't follow many stereotypical traits other male mcs do. That makes him refreshing. He doesn't single women out to protect, nor is he sexually interested in them. He doesn't care about keeping up a strongman facade. He is just kind. And dumb, but in his case that works too.

This might be spoilers: but the idea of the sun and freedom is clear from the start, and luffy represents that to a T, he shines a light on the unfortunate ones and makes sure they deserve the rights they see

There are people who probably cant understand why he didnt want reyleigh to reveal the one piece. So I wouldnt call him simple. As far as im concerned, luffy is more complex than your average holleywood character in the last 20 years because there is thought behind him.
