📺 ABOUT THIS VIDEO :
Mid / Side (m/s) eq is one of those things that is relatively new, but I’ve been using it for years in the hardware analogue EQ days. Today I give you some practical ways you can use it to get some good results…but go easy it can soon go badly wrong if over used.

Love to hear any mid / side eq tricks you’re using? I’ve got a few more I’ll be showing in coming vids 👍
@streaky Thanks again for all your infos , and what is the song you’re playing...it’s 🔥
Using side mode to bring out some low mids on rythm guitars in a rock track :)
SoundGuy yeah rock tracks can handle some of that in the lows I do it often 👍
HBONTHETRACK matt my assistant is a pretty handy producer 👍
Streaky you have to make a video on your lighting as well it’s so clean and neat , I bet it’s a great environment to work in
Can you do a Linear phase Eq explanation or tutorial? why should we use it and when to use it properly? Thanks
The videos just keep getting better.
This is SO SO helpful!!! LOVE the way you explain things and just feel so glad I discovered you! You rock!
This technique with bringing out vocals using M/S was a real eye-opener. Thanks.
I use M/S for carving out space in the center for vocals. In the stereo rhythm guitar group channel, I'll dip the midrange (500hz - 1k) in "mid" mode. My rhythm guitars are also hard panned going into the group channel. Really helps carve out a little bit more space for vocals and widens the guitars.
This was easy to understand. Watched few videos and could not understand it until now. Keep them coming 👍🏽
thanks for the history lesson in the beginning
This is the pro q 3 video I've been looking for. Thanks man it's a real help.
Thank you so much for helping us to learn more about mid and side eq, I appreciate it, thanks for the video and greetings from Germany
Thank you so much super helpful 👌🏾💯😁 I learned more from this than hours of other vids 😬🤕🤫
Great Tech Info....Not many other videos out there with this detail on M/S ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Great demo by Streaky. This is still relevant, very useful. Don't get too heavy handed with MS and you'll be doing good with this
Awesome Tutorial! Thank you very much! Best musical Regards, Stefan
Brilliant vid!
Amazing help. Thank you! :)
the first time someone has explained eqing so accurately but generic at the same time.. special vid !
Thanks man, great video.
very interesting, I have learned a lot, thank you
Thanks for reminding me of ms and thanks for the tips
5 stars video!!! Thank you Streaky! Gold
Great video as usual !
Great tips here ❤️
Great video!! Thanks
Great vid, many thanks. 🙏👍
Thanks Streaky! 🙌
Awesome content, Streaky. A written description summarizing each presentation would be a plus, especially for the scanners amongst us. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing this, I've been using the mono maker on the pa amek 2098 for my bass, but going to have a good play with pro q now
Big help to me man.🔥🔥✊🏾
Thanks for sharing!
I have an EQ plugin on my mix buss I mix into that does this. I have always thought a mono maker would be better. I'm glad to know what I am already doing is just as good!
Great videos my friend.
10:52 what were doing is just lifting the mids there... I like that. great vid man
I got my mix about as good as it can get, I thought. Voodoo missing. I've been mixing for 15 years and never knew about this. Going to try and if it's the Voodoo! Awesome content, subscribed!
very usefull tipps !
Cool stuff
nice tut thx
Thank you.. really super cool that you show your tricks here. This is very helpful for us. For that I say THANK YOU! It would be great if you do a tutorial using MS techniques for stem mixing. So like drum bus, bass, synth bus, vocal bus. To get the best out before record the premaster. Thank you! Keep On Groovin.
Very interesting video!
super cool!
Great Tips
Another excellent video. One request -- a little more time with EQ In/Out, or whatever is being discussed. I find this to be a common issue with experienced engineers on youtube who tend to flash through settings they know so well. My mind needs more time to process the subtle differences in sound. Anyway, great demo and thanks for finding time to make these videos.
Dope!!!
great!
Very helpful. Appreciate your work on this. Need to re-watch this in the studio. The ole' airPods don't do it service. ; )
it's called sum and difference . (l+r) and (l-r) .when adding l and r channels signals present in both channels get a 3db gain boost and that is what lets you tap into the middle. the difference is not a stereo track
Thank you your the best Your video help me out a lot 😊 ... your knowledge can and will get you to he pro level only if the individual apply wisely...Thank you again, your high appreciated for your love for music and as an top engineer🔥🔥🔥 @ Streaky🔥🔥🔥✨🕺🏾
hey brother I am from Srilanka .....your videos and this things soo good...
you that maaaaan!
So funny, I taught this to an artist tonight exactly the same way without knowing the existence of this video 🤣! When I started to use mids / sides with EQs it was about 4 months ago (as a self-personal challenge I pushed to the limit of what I can do without using these features in an EQ in the past) and starting using this was a life-changer for me, it makes the work so much easier especially to fix the problems. Your videos are really interesting and informative! Take care and have a fantastic weekend! Best Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎵🎶🙏💯🌠
I feel a bell would have been better suited for the mid 1k boost but this vid is a gem !
For monoing the bass NUGEN Monofilter offers lots of controls. Worth a shot.
Greetings, Streaky!! Big fan of your content! My question is where on the chain should I place the MS Eq? At the very end? Perhaps multiple EQ instances stacked? Thank You!
thank you, great vid. Do you have concerns about correlation problems/ mono compatability with much M/S processing?
I like to think of M/S as the similarities & differences respectively between the L & R signals.
Thanks again for showing us these tricks, do you always use Pro Q3 in Linear Phase High as your go to or is it track dependant? Cheers
Yes mostly I like the clean sound it gives as I have loads of Coloured options
big side vibes
Dude. Thank you for such a great video. Question, I understand the idea and concept of mid and Side eq, but at what point does Stereo Mode eqing need to happen? I guess I can’t get the visual of stereo eqing. What frequencies should Mindfully be adjusted if I’m doing this during my mixing stage on individual instruments with also using mid and side EQ on these individual instruments. Thanks again dude. Cheers
I wish you would have used the MEA-2!!! Fun video anyway!
Same thing but not as flexible
Mid-Side is so easy to understand when demonstrated, but it's soooo difficult to explain! I tried haha. I might make another video to explain better. I used to think of it as "Front sounding" vs "in your head sounding" before I finally worked out what it was.
its not that complicated. side is literally any content that differs in the two channels. correspondingly any frequency content that matches, is mid
Very helpful tutorial; thank you! I have a question about headphones. Many mix engineers use headphones like the MDR-7506 and HD600. For a mastering engineer, is it a good investment to buy a pair of detailed high-end phones such as Audeze, Oppo PM-1 or Focal`s?
Those are decent, but I'd at least go for the Sennheiser HD 560 S (under $200) if you can afford it. I'm using those. They're great, transparent, and very comfortable. I can hardly tell I'm wearing them. If you have $400-$600 there are better options too.
wow
Relatively new thing over the last 20 or 30 years... so my life existence lmao
I saw you monoing the bass with Fabfilter ProMB and you did twist the mid/side gain control to mid on a bass band. What is the difference?
I'd rather use wide bells for what you are doing so I have more control over the individual elements in the mix.
Real question for me Streaky is, do you use the gentle glue SSL master bus compression, as explained in previous last week's video, post this EQ or before the Eq as first insert in the chain ?
After
Can you and should you use this on every mix and master
Thanks for the great video. I know that you want to listen to everything in context (full track), but I was surprised that you didn't click on the solo button (headphone icon on the filter point) on the sides, low cut filter to ensure that you weren't starting to impact non kick / bass instruments. Is there a reason for that? Or was it because that would be too Pro Q3 specific?
I’m just showing you how to use it...you would need to listen and be more delicate etc...different tracks need different things just a demo in this video not actually what I would do to this track
@@Streaky_com Fair enough, I'll delete my post, mustn't spread my secret sauce, lol. Thanks again.
Can you do a real in depth ozone 9 master?
👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👊🏿👊🏿👊🏿
The last two of your videos I've watched I noticed RX in the background what exactly are you using it for?
What about this... raise a node at about 1.5k set to the left channel, and another at about 2.5k set to the right channel. Would that likely introduce phase issue, and be totally asinine? :)
Do you think is better a low shelf or a high pass filter to mono the bass?
Either really depends on the track but I normally use a shelf
when is the main time to use midside eq...on the mix before printing to be mastered or only during mastering?
Love M/S but i quickly found out, it will bite you in the ass if your not carefull! I have sinse learned to respect it and is a great go to tool!
what if I got stereo information on the bass and I would rather convert the whole thing into mono than just cut the stereo info out of it?
"let's jump into the computer" is something my grandma would say
what headphones are you using?
Lcdx
One thing I’ve always wondered is, with hardware eqs, once your ‘side channel’ has gone through the right side of a hardware eq, how does the daw then know where to place panned information after receiving a single ‘side channel’ of an eq, surely it can’t know pan information based on a single side channel? Or does it use the original audio being sent in order to compare the new processed audio and pan the info back to the right place? Cheers!
You probably mix it back before the AD or you have 4 channels. Not sure
That’s what the m/s box is for it splits the signal and puts it back together
"Sometimes it can be nice, most of the time it can't be"..... :)
Name that song?
1:47 arn't the sides allways a 2 track, as they are holding the phase difference? so you need 3 eq's and signals if you would want to process them seperately, 1 for the mono sum ( (L + R) / 2 the phase cancels out) and 2 for each side ( L - sum and R - sum) ? I agree that you wouldn't want to treat both sides differently as that would skew the stereo image. if you'd sum the whole side to one signal / eq you'd get .... drum roll .... silence :)
I think I understand what you’re thinking, the right hand side of the analogue does both sides of the sum
Name of the song and artist please
That's all great, but what you're doing regarding stereo field (what's the difference), if the main output of the song is stereo (listener), mono sometimes, if the listener is on a side. You can do in M/S a ton of change, but than you go back to "stereo mode" and it all sounds (could...) like crap. When you go to sides and you lift high frequencies, of course you're not going to lift up the bass, because bass "is not there". There's nothing to lift. So, is it just another perspective to see if something on the sides is going bad, wrong in the mastering phase? So this tool actually "isolates" mono information in the song and you're only effecting mono info? If that's so, than this is a great tool, otherwise it would be a waste of time.
As you seem to have the T-Racks Suite, I'm surprised you didn't use their Sontec 432 emulation (Master EQ-432), although I suppose the Pro-Q3 is more visual...
It’s quite limiting when it comes to m/s and yes defo more visual
Good information. Please get rid of the distracting background music as you explain this stuff.
Think you just hit paranormal.
With all these tips is the course even worth it?😂
🤦♂️ this is the tip of iceberg
@@Streaky_com 👀....👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Mate...... I love your videos but please get rid of that fecking background music! It’s doing my bleedin’ head in!!🙄😫🤕 Love you still😎😍🤗
Hahaha Soz 😘
Bro we bare hear the difference, you need to exaggerate a bit on UA-cam we are not right there with you. This is the big problem with many UA-camrs they are not so great at explaining things with words, then when it comes to showing things they dont realize that teaching others is not like you are actually doing the thing for real as you should do, its teaching and a good teaching must go down to the student level, how can you carry a child from the ground if you dont bend down. Thanks either remake this video or I wont be taking this Chanel serious. even use everyday terms sometimes not a must to use the lingos of the pros.
Let me find some Russian or African who can get down to Earth. Its one thing to know something its another thing to know to clearly explain and teach it.
Well thanks for the time.
Streaky said in this that he did exaggerate settings, even thought was in a mastering session, so it's really about subtle changes.
