Holy smokes dude, this is probably the most helpful video on mid/side EQ I’ve watched on UA-cam, ever. You are incredible at explaining this, everyone else just explains things so unclearly
After many producers failed to explain the concept to me, and like half a year later, I finally found this video... Than You so much for breaking it down so simply, you explained it really well, and my songs are much better now! I subscribed, please continue making amazing stuff like this!
Six years into mixing and listening to lectures on Mid-Side EQ, this is by far the best video for anybody to understand it properly. Cheers! Keep making these awesome tutorials, love from India!
Hey everyone, I've just spent over an hour on UA-cam trying to learn about Mid/Side Processing, and most of the other videos end up confusing you more than clarifying anything. This guy is so easy to understand and he does such a tremendous job of explaining things. I just had that A-HA! moment - the light just turned on for me after watching this. Thanks for a great walk-thru of this procedure.
This is a very very very good tutorial and explanation. I regret the countless hours i spent watching other UA-cam Videos sending me down and endless rabbit hole of mixing hell.
I was really struggling to understand why I couldn't get the mud out of parts of my mix or what mid/side eq actually did but now after watching this I understand so thank you for this video 👍
No one actually is teaching about this technique. Scoop the frequency in the centre mix. After I’ve learn this technique, it was like a breath of fresh for me. I like using midside on the bus channel. It works as well. You’re awesome man.
After watching lots of confusing and unclear videos and tutorials of the mid-side EQ'ing, finally now I understand the mid-side mixing tecnique...🥲🥲 Thanks!!
I have watched thousands of videos, but after years I can only now really understand what should be done to have a less muddy track. Thank you very much for the tutorial and for the accuracy in explaining the topic.
pretty sure I've seen 33 mid side tutorials at this point and all they did was just confused me more. wish i had found this video sooner could've literally saved a lot of time and a lot of my rushed mixes dammmmm this was god send
The name Lonely Rocker is a little misleading. I almost didn’t click on your video. And I am a big Rush fan. OMG am I happy I clicked. I’ve been struggling with this mid/side concept for a while and I just had that aha moment. You’re a natural teacher. Thanks a million.
For the first time I understand what this MID-SIDE-EQ-thing is all about. It took me ages so far to correct my mixes by trial and error and listening on several devises. Now I will have a better way to deal with the issues occuring. Thank you very, very much!
If you load the Channel EQ as Dual Mono rather than Stereo, you can process mid and side using one instance of the plugin. (This applies to all stereo plugins in Logic, not just Channel EQ.) Insert the plugin as Dual Mono and open it. To the right of the L and R buttons is a settings button. Click it, and then you get the option to change the plugin mode from L-R to M-S and the buttons change accordingly. Now you have M and S buttons at the top of the plugin window.
You explain better than Streaky and many top pros, OMG where have been all these years? Thanks for even creating a UA-cam chanel and teach so crystal clearly. wow. Thank you, its funny no one told us that what you pan in the center doesnt stay in center go goes to the sides too. when mono start being a little stereo shows that everything is screwed in the information we about many thing in the world by people and schools and wont say the full truth. You are amazing. one could watch a thousand videos about midside and might understand fully till this video. Because no one is saying mono signals are not pure mono. And I think its like even what is mono is also in both left and right speaker. and you can choose to eq it so that that eq effect is only heard in the center or around the left right. The lingo is what most things complex, they use terms to sound fun while might be giving a wrong picture.
Thank you so much!! I honoured to have my name near Streaky. He truly is a mastering expert. But maybe I just found a way to explain M/S more clear. Hope it helps your mixes!!
Incredibly instructive video here, thanks a bunch, sir ! 👍 I've never really thought mid-side EQ could be that crucial, for me, it was just a mastering tool, I didn't really get the actual point of it during the mix process, until now. Mid-side EQ is definitely a game changer and so is this insightful video. 👌
Thank you so much for not only making this amazing informative video but for also for making in plain and easy to understand and apply. This is a gem in any producer's tool box! Namaste!
You sir, make it so easy to understand and easy to learn. What a pedagogue. And as a non fluent english speaker, your articulation is very easy to understand. A big thumb!
I agree that this is important area of knowledge. For example, if you listen to commercial music that was done at moderate to high budget, you'll find that the sides in isolation are very clear. However, this should not be treated as an absolute - for example, with your kick drum case, the side information is actually caused by the asymmetry of the sound itself - if it were a real drum, the sound emanating from the physical drum will never be the exact same left and right, and hence you get some side information. There may be tracks, bands or genres where this is desirable. For any kind of heavy music, mid-side isolation is probably almost always a good move, since there are so many elements competing for frequency space, and mud is not your friend. But with some forms of pop, letting the kick drum (or other elements) keep their natural side variance may be desirable. I approach this aspect of mixing very deliberately. But great video - good techniques.
Thanks. The idea with this video was to introduce the concept to those that don’t understand it. At a basic level it can make a huge difference to a mix. If I made this video again today I wouldn’t have used a kick drum for my low end example. Especially if it was a mono track but the idea was that it was a low frequency example. But I think the point was made and many have enjoyed this video. Thanks for your insight!
This should be on one of those lists "10 secrets the pros don't tell you". This clearly shows the reasoning behind the tips " cut the sides of the low frequencies" and "check the mix in mono" which are oversimplifications. In reality, you just have to mix the sides and the mid independently cause you can cut a mid trying to remove a resonance caused by the sides and vice-versa. Especially if you use headphones, sides that sound very open can clog everything when they merge in the same space.
Thanks so much!! Really thrilled you found this helpful. Seems it has become one of my more popular videos. Really happy many are finding it useful. Thank you!
I've watched a dozen of mid/side eq videos. I understood them blindly. But this one, this one opened my eyes and see things more clearly. Thank you so much. Subscribed.
In all my time trying to figure out what the heck mid-side EQ even is and why it may be important.... this video is the ONLY thing thats gotten me to comprehend it so far... THANK you! 😭 I make Dubstep so this seems VERY important for that.... i had NO idea summing to mono still caused issues
OMG - Thank you so much for this. It's exactly what I needed. I've been looking everywhere for this information. This has drastically improved my mixes..!!
Just found your Vid. And this is super awesome tutorial. Wish I've found this earlier.....but still tons of thanks. Really really appreciate it. You are the man.....
Dang. I wasted an hour watching 10 other useless videos of people droning on and on about or around he topic. Wish I'd watched YOURS FIRST! Thanks! Top shelf man!
This is an excellent tutorial! I haven't heard or seen mid/side eq described this way before and it really helped me define the process much much better. Thanks! Subscribed!
I'm going to tell you: HOW IN THE NAME OF GOD I DIDN'T SAW YOUR CHANNEL BEFORE???? This is priceless. I do knew M/S before but not with a spectrum analyzer in conjunction . Thanks a lot. You're a master!!!!!!
This video has helped me clean up my mixes so much so thank you! I’ve been looking for a simple and great explanation on what to do and this was it 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Nice ... I used this M/S for mastering a song full of hornes, drumms etc. and those hornes where just muddy and all over the place, so after two days of trying after trying I just eliminated some of the low frequencies (from 20hz to 150hz all of it in anger...) from the sides, lifted and lowered some at the center and sides (narrow Q), lifted even on the same frequency spot center and sides (different levels) - so it was like I was cheking with the lift in the same frequency in the sides, how bad or good my raw mix was, or better said how "right I was to lift there ..." as before it was all in "stereo mode" ... It's great video and "M/S treatment" is a must in a mix where there's a lot of instruments playing ... But as you said: The ears are No.1 reference. Thanks again for the great video. Subscribed. :)
Hi, Great tutorial, I have a question, i understand how to clear out the mid from the side and why it's useful but do you mean you should do that for every sound ?? Side information is useful and desired especially if you want stereo information in the top or your mixes ?? Maybe i'm just not understanding this properly which is highly likely. Thanks for the video and hopefully a reply. EDIT: Ok 2 minutes later into the vid you answered that question above, Sorry for not watching until the end before asking.
@@LonelyRocker a follow up question if I may. I am a little unclear on how implementing Mid/Side EQ'ing remains/is affected as the audio progresses through the signal chain.
