Hey @BrandonWashington. I have three of these rigged up that I use daily. If you want a smaller / lighter setup, get a Sony NP battery sled. I use the 970 and get about 2 hours of battery life, fully rigged. I attached the battery sled to the handle. It even has a light to tell when it is running low. When I really have a long day planned, I use a v-mount with rails, which basically runs all day.
What Wuzzed said, the good thing is that they're cheap, too. You can get a 2 pack of 7.4v 8800 mAh 970's for $30. You can get 6 of them for the same price as 1 Vmount and it'll run you longer too. Plus, it's lighter and takes up less space on your rig.
Edit: 6x2 pack = 12*
8800 mAh * 12 = 105600 mAh *7.4V/1000 = total of 781.44 Wh v.s the 97.68 Wh of the Soonwell (6600 mAh * 14.8V/1000 = 97.68 Wh)
The 970 route will last up to 8x as long for the same price. The only downside is that each individual 970 will last you ~66.67% as long (65.12 Wh vs 97.68), assuming it doesn't shut off at 20% like the included 7.2V battery, which it probably won't. Note, you won't need so many batteries, so you could just get 4 for ~$60 and have 260.48 Wh vs the 97.68 Wh $180 Soonwell.
Or you could get the Neewer Vmount with 190.08 Wh for $150 and get a 2-pack of the PowerExtras for a total of 320.32 Wh. That way you can get a large battery for long uninterrupted shoots, and an extra couple hours of back-up juice for the same price as 1 Soonwell Vmount.

Hi Brandon ! Thank you for making this videos about Blackmagic camera. Your videos helped me to jump and buy the camera as soon as it gets in my country. I saw at some point Canon 100mm macro lens attached to your blackmagic in this video or other video of yours. Do you use Micro 3/4 lenses or Canon lenses? I watched other youtube videos about this camera, and many people recommended Lumix 12-35mm as the best lens for this blackmagic. I do have EF mount lenses (tamron 70-200mm 2.8/ tamron 35mm / tamron 24-70mm / canon L 100mm macro/ canon L 17-40 / canon 50 mm 1.8) . I don`t know if I should sell some of them and work with micro 3/4 lenses or if I should buy that adapter which adds also +1 fstop so I can keep those lenses that I already have. I would appreciate if you will share also information about lenses for blackmagic. Thanks again for this videos and good luck in life !
Hi Brandon. For charging the soonwell, I got a battery but received no way to charge it so got a generic d-tap charging cable but not sure which port I’m meant to use to charge it
what charger are you charging that soonwell with
it is safe if you are using vmount battery with lpe6? instead of dummy battery?
Thanks for the vid. The thing is the bmpcc4k needs a minimum voltage amount. So even if you have some juice left in your battery it may not necessarily be enough to power the cam, so cutting out at 20% or whatever is not unexpected

The problem is if you buy a v mount battery then you need the plate as well cage rails handle ssd mount etc
I use the sony npf batteries with the small rig plate, lasts me up to 3 hours a battery. Sick bmpcc 4k videos btw i just uploaded one myself.

Brandon - does this battery prevent ground loops if its used to power BOTH a monitor AND the BMPCC 4k through its ON BATTERY D-Taps?
A groundloop doesn't need a mains-ground to be a groundloop. It basically is a circular connection somewhere in a system: if the ground from a HDMI-out connection gets fed to a monitor that, in turn has a ground-connection to the battery, which in turn has the same ground fed into the camera and the camera's power-ground and HDMI-grounds are interconnected, than that's a groundloop. But it depends on galvanic isolation and just how the system is designed if this will introduce problems.
I generally consider equipment able to handle the full voltage-range of standard V-mounts to be 'qualified' to be hardwired as they have either inputs or outputs isolated or sufficiently filtered/decoupled for this use. When I have equipment that (normally) runs on 8,4 Volt or so, I generally consider it safer to put a galvanic-isolated converter in between (I'm talking quality stuff here from Gaptec, Recom, Murata, not the cheap Ebay-stuff, how much is your equipment worth again?).
But I'm a tech-head: I hardly buy all those very expensive converterplates out there but buy these myself and put them inside a fancy casing. They're still expensive, but at least I then know I've got good stuff that is very likely to survive my camera's lifetime.
But, don't take my word for granted: the internet is full of stories of people frying either the HDMI-outputstage in their camera or the input on their Blackmagic Video Assist monitor when feeding them from the same battery. I tried two videocameras (Both JVC's) and had no issue whatsoever. I THINK, and really don't know for sure, that most of those people use photocameras (which probably aren't completely designed to be connected to a monitor while a big battery powers both the camera and the monitor) while a real videocamera probably handles things very different.
Whatever you do: coldplugging is still preferred. Though this issue (mostly known from TV's) seems to be mitigated by now, there have been a lot of people who fried the HDMI input-stage on a TV when it was hotplugged (connecting a HDMI-capable device to a TV while both plugged into mains power or even on).
There's probably some nice document out there about the HDMI-standard and what is and what isn't allowed in equipment that handles this topic, but I don't know it.

Can you recommend a specific adapter/coupler from Gaptec, Recom, Murata that I assume would be placed between exactly which components?
@@aknittel1 Yep, everything off and not even connected to a battery, connect everything and then apply power/put the battery on the plate (that is, if that is possible: not every batteryplate handles the D-TAP output the same) .
For some extra info: Gaptec, Recom and Murata are all three (besides a few others) big names in the power-management industry, with an incredible wealth of choice in DC to DC converters, both isolated and non-isolated.
Be aware that those products are meant to be soldered to PCB's, you need your own cabling and thus they hardly ever are parts that are usable right away.
Though the better ones (medical/mil spec) usually are very well filtered, AV-equipment is sensitive stuff that could suffer from high-frequency noise left by such switching converters. Test your setup thoroughly before you rely on it and be prepared ot go online for additional filtering components (usually supplied in application notes by the manufacturer).
Filtering out results at Mouser works very well to find a suitable converter. Pay attention to maximum capacitive load rating on the output (not every converter can handle them and take at least 1500 uF into account), maximum peak current capability and short-circuit handling.
If this is all too technical/complicated: don't think about doing this yourself but just buy the ready-to-use stuff you need. Making stuff yourself in the professional AV-world can save you quite a lot of money, but you really need to know what you're doing: just as easy as you can save money, you can also loose big money in an instant in case of a short/wrong polarity/whatever.

First thank you so much for this video but i am iut of budget i only have a maximum of 150$ to spend in order to solve my battery issues with the Bmpcc4k please i need help to know what to do, i dont have a v mount adapter neither is it even possible to solve the battery problem for 150 bucks?

I love the BMPCC 4k. Battery life is the reason I am not getting one any time soon. It's a shame that the fix involves adding a battery the size of the camera itself...

I fear using the Wasabi batteries. I bought 4 of them and in less than a year they completely failed on me (all 4). They now say they are fully charged and then last about 20sec before totally dying.
@@eduardocardona6608 yeahp, that's what I did. Got two more official Canon LP batteries and they have lasted me waaaaay longer than the Wasabi batteries. Way worth the price...if all Wasabi batteries lasted 1 year then the original ones have saved me tons of money.
What happens when the v mount battery drains? Will it go under 10.4v and hurt the camera or just turn off at 12v?
The battery is likely to turn off at some point as the battery management system protects the cells. But my advice is to stay well away from that limit as this could render the battery useless permanently (the BMS can cut-off the power forgood if it discharges too low, besides a shitload of other reasons that can involve dangerous situations).
As most videocamera's will start alarming the user at 12,8 Volt (some a bit lower, some a bit higher) that he or she should replace the battery, 12 Volt is usually the system-critical voltage for such batteries, unless stated otherwise.
As the BMPCC runs fine on two 8,4 Volt batteries, 10,4 Volt should not hurt it at all.

The battery supplied with the BMPCC4K is 'not' an official Canon battery. No where on the battery does it even mention Canon, it's just a cheap Chinese knockoff, good enough to test out the camera but not for any serious use.
But even with original Canon's, it's a ridiculous choice of a battery for such a power hungry device. I felt the same way about the Blackmagic Video Assist (note: NOT the newer 3G and 12G versions that can incorporate NP-F batteries).
Besides the fact that the monitor just draws too much power for such small batteries, the stand-by current is just absolutely ridiculous, even at the time the thing was made: 6 mA stand-by current is HUGE and will drain both batteries in about 2,5 weeks. It nearly killed one of my V-locks as I forgot to disconnect the DC-jack from the D-tap output on the camera.
@@weeardguy I don't know why Blackmagic chose the Canon battery, but I presume it would have been done for a logical reason at the time (20/20 hindsight is never wrong). I think the original Micro/Studio Cinema cameras used Canon batteries as well and so there may have been a historical reason for doing this with the first BMPCC4K. I'm not holding this against Blackmagic, as I would always have implemented an external battery solution and used the internal battery as an UPS. My larger BMPCC4K unit uses a V-mount and powers the camera, 7" monitor and Nucleus Nano, but I use an adapter plate that has an on/off switch such that, when turned off, no power is delivered to anything. It works.
@@AustralianImage Ah, that could be. I own only two Blackmagic products (the already mentioned Video Assist and Resolve) and didn't know they used the LP-E6 battery before.
It does look like it was a bit of a planned thing: first bring out the Assist and then the Assist 4K, then revise both models, call them 3G and 12G and finally support NP-F batteries (while I still think just having an XLR-4 connection would be even better)
@@weeardguy I think the one reason why Blackmagic does things they way it does is that it's not a huge organisation with deep pockets, so sourcing new components may not always be as easy as it is for major manufacturers like Canon, Sony, Panasonic etc (who often manufacture their own components). If they have a pipeline for a certain technology that has already been paid for, it's simply not economical to bin that and start anew. That's also why it's sometimes hard to get hold of new Blackmagic gear, as they only make what they think the demand will be, so that they don't have lots of products left on the shelf unwanted. I was one of the early adopters (pre-ordered) for the BMPCC4K and the Speed Editor.
@@AustralianImage I know that could very well the reason for it. But NP-F stuff was already there when the Video Assist was brought to market. I just don't know how Sony handles their patents and expect them to sit on top of them and have other manufacturers pay rather large fees to allow them to use their designs.
About the market and the demand for certain products: most manufacturers in the professional market work this way, that's why such camera's are more expensive, besides the fact such equipment is usually far better to service than the average consumer-camera.
And now you mention the Speed Editor: I own three Blackmagic products ;) I got it as well but completely forgot about it.
Hey man I love your videos but I do not agree about the wasabi batteries. I saw them do a couple funky things when I was just messing around that could have been a nightmare on an actual shoot. I just bought the bullet got one genuine Canon battery for 60 bucks and I don't even use the same without it hooked up to an external battery. Just my 2 cents!

Love your stuff, don't get me wrong, but its a cinema camera, so... the fact that it even has any battery life at all is more than most cinema cameras can claim. (Just putting it out there for everyone that thinks the battery life is an issue, no need to retort or explain, I get what you meant, lol.)
I think you are mistaking photocameras-heavily-used-as-cinemacameras for real video or cinema-cameras. The first are just not made for 'cinema' use. The second are indeed power hungry (but trust me, so is the standard ENG-camera) but they are usually always equipped with a far more industry-standard V-mount, Arri-mount or whatever-mount and thus have a wide range of batteries to choose from (with V-mounts usually ranging from 95 Wh to 240 Wh, I'm not into the even more expensive batteries)
Except a Vmount is bigger than the camera and you don't see the screet because of it :)

It depends of what you are using it for. You can rig a DSLR if you need it, but don't rig a cinema camera at all. Having "cinema" in it's name doesn't mean you have to rig it, because it often is counterproductive, slowing you down and complicating things for no reason. I use Canon C200 and I don't rig it at all, I even strip down the factory package. That's why using a Vmount makes no sense on a little camera like BMPCC4k, it's much better to just buy original Canon batteries for the price, Vmounts are not cheap, for the three of them you could buy at least 6 original LP-6 which is enough for the whole day shoot.

@ Jack of Blades: this is 'just' a videocamera which probably only bears the name cinema because of its dynamic range, noisefloor and other features not every camera has.
But I have to be honest about the LP-E6 batteries: they are just a ridiculous choice. My Blackmagic Video Assist monitor uses them as well, but they are just not up to the task and drain too quickly (and they are original Canon's!)
It works way better with the DC-jack connected to the D-TAP output on the camera and also doesn't increase the weight as much.

Noot I mean yeah.....when it comes to preference of background blur and noise performance I do prefer full frame, and s35 at the minimum. I don’t like the iPhone look of micro 4/3rds. It’s not the exact same obviously, but honestly I think anything above F2.8 looks like it was shot on a really nice iPhone.
