      I signed over the master rights to a song, however I still get 50% royalties from a music distributor. This is done through distrokid allowing split of streaming royalties. How can this be? I am not the performer but the song writer.

      @@bdashsnias a songwriter you are entitled to mechanical royalties from the sales, downloads, and streams of your song. I did a full, comprehensive tutorial on every music royalty, who they belong to, and how they are paid. I think you will benefit greatly from it. It's called Everything You Need to Know About Music Royalties. Here's the link.

      The Music Business Made Easy thank you. I am also the producer of the song. We split the royalties 50/50 from distrokid however the other artist owns the master. We each collect 50% or the pay from distrokid. My follow up questions:
      1. Is this pay from Distrokid considered “composition mechanical royalties?” 2. If I move to another distributor how would I go about collecting these royalties that we currently split via distrokid? Thank you again.

    If i make a beat for an artist and the artists releases the song that i produced without having proper publishing, does that mean i get 100% of the publishing. This situation happened when the artist has his own label but told me he hasn't gotten his publishing together.

    • @TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy
      @TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy  4 роки тому +3

      If you made a beat and the artist recorded to that beat. You own 50% of the song. First, you should be a member of BMI or ASCAP. If you are a member of BMI, however, you won't necessarily have to register a publishing company. You will get your publishing, with just being a writer member. After you become a member you still need to register the songs with them. If you don't do that, you won't get any publishing/writer royalties. Also, you need to join SoundExchange as a master rights owner, if you indeed own the master recording or a part of it. If not, then you won't need to unless you are an artist yourself, then you would join as a Featured Artist. Whether or not the Artist with his label has his publishing together or not has nothing to do with you not having yours. You need to have your memberships to get your percentage of what you own. You should have a split sheet with all of that information written down. The percentage of what you both own, and that is the information you use to register the songs with. Without doing this, you won't receive your money. I have videos that explain all of these things. I hope you have some time during the nation's lockdown to watch as many as you can. They are not that long. I hope this helps! God bless you.

    I have a 8piece band I write lyrics my brother plays guitar and composes the melody and hooks we then present to the rest of the group and they all come up with their parts...we then arranged the song as a group...what are the percentages for each member, who holds the masters and license in a case where you have this many members.

      As soon as you log into your account. On the left side, you'll see 'statements' click on that, then in the middle, you'll see 'statements' again. Click on that to take you to your page showing payments if any.

    I have a question should a songwriter start an LLC or sole proprietor. And when should you do this. And is this the only way you pay taxes on royalties

    • @TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy
      @TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy  3 роки тому

      Treating your music as a business is important. The type of entity you choose should be the one that will work best for your situation. An LLC provides more protection against your personal assets. When is up to you! Setting up everything makes things flow better later, but only you know your unique situation. You pay taxes according to the type entity you choose.

      BMI is for writers and publishers. You would register as a songwriter. You will still get your publishing royalties though. I have a video that walks you step-by-step on how to do that.

      You have the idea!
      Song Title:
      Album Title (if applicable)
      Name of Artist:
      Produced by:
      Record Label (if applicable)
      Songwriter(s)
      Publisher(s) or Published by:
      If it is licensed by a third party, the Licensed to UA-cam will automatically appear at the bottom of the credits you include.

      My channel manages my friend. Which is third party. Still not coming.Would you like to elaborate. My channel name must appear in the license.
      Example :-
      Licensed to UA-cam by Tseries ( on behalf of T Series ).We take the third party license.

    • @sachinkumar-yi5mr

      Third Party License will need to join MCN or With which the government has licenses.

      I meant if you have a third party such as Audiam, AdRev, or took the option to monetize UA-cam from the digital distributor other vendor monetizing the videos for you, that information will appear from that. If you are doing the monetization yourself, then you are free to add your information to the video in the credits.
