I really enjoyed and learned a lot from this video. I’ve been searching for this type of info for a while and for some reason I’m just find it. Thank you so much!
Bstar’s World those are royalties that affect the Artist/Label for sound recordings. That’s different from publishing or songwriter royalties. If you would like to participate in those royalties as an Artist or as a master rights owner then you should join to get potential royalties from them. Also, if you didn’t opt in to collect them through your PRO.
Extremely helpful overview and simple explanation of a very complex industry. Thank you very much. Do you offer any hourly mentoring or consulting services?
your videos are so helpful !!! I have a question : My distributor is Distrokiid. As a Public admin , I have been considering Songtrust but I'm having trouble with the IPI number. As a composer I'm confused when I get to Songfile. I am SO Sorry for this loaded essay I just typed but you are the only source that breaks things down so clearly ! I really appreciate you !
I gave you your number under your last response. You only need one publishing admin, choose one. They do the same thing except their fees and the details lie in their terms of agreement. You’ll need to read to decide which one is the best one for you. Songtrust or HFA not both.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy thank you! I called and had BMI help me. It was something wrong in their end. I’m with Songtrust now as my Publish admin company thank you .
Hey how are you I hope all is well and your video has been very helpful as well too but I want that actual question what do I have to do have my own distribution company
Does HFA collect the the mechanical royalty payment from the sales/stream of the sound recording ? If not, then where is the mechanical generated from? Thanks in advance.
No they used to collect from the sales stream of the underlying song, not the recorded version of the song (distributor collects those). Now the MLC collects from the streams from the song. Watch my two videos on the MLC to get caught up.
This very is legendary but one thing I need to understand so when you sign up with a good publishing company are your chances of getting your music played in stores restaurants etc boosted ?? Example I saw my ARTISTE alkaline had a song and in the description Sony ATV or something like that was the publisher I think it was impel,Sony ATV publishing,Warner chapell etc.....
Yes, your chances are better if you have a publishing deal... publishers actively work to license your songs. Watch the videos I have on the Music Publisher (the types/what they do etc.)
If the songs were properly registered, you still should see royalties for the work if enough streams, downloads etcetera generated any. If not, watch this video, to learn where to go to see if you're owed royalties: ua-cam.com/video/GZpl06TYpKM/v-deo.html
Are you speaking in terms of using the music as music for release? If you are wanting to use the music for commercial use, you have to make sure the terms state that it can be used that way. I would have to know the scope of what you're asking. Can you be a little more specific? This question can be interpreted in too many ways, and I don't want to assume what you're saying. Thanks for reaching out and for watching!
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy I was referring to producers who use vocal packs for dance music manly. Are they allowed to collect royalties as long as the music arrangements and production is original? Thanks again for taking the time to read the request.
@@gymmiethedreameryou're welcome! Yes if the licenses that come with those vocal packs states that they can be used for "commercial" purposes. If not, you'll have to get a license from them in order to do so!
Hi thanks for this! So am I correct to say, you distribute, then sign up to a publishing admin. The publishing admin registers your works with BMI/ASCAP PRO etc. This way you get the performance royalties etc? As in, once you go to a Distributor, you don't need to sign up to a PRO? (In other words It's done at publishing stage?) Thanks!
Hello Ms. Watkins. I'm not sure if i got this right. So Administrator Publishing Companies only collect Royalties on the Musical Composition, and not on the Sound Recording?
I read that many distributors revoke content ID and withhold revenue if you use your own music in your own videos. No distributor discloses this anywhere prior to taking such action. Some distributors even encourage you to use your own song in your own videos and recommend you encourage others to use your songs to increase content ID revenue. I've only ever seen one screenshot of one distributor justifying the removal of content ID with enforcing "circumventing systems" rule. Can you point to distributors that actually tolerate musicians using their own songs in their videos?
Hi Mariea. As an all-around music artist and entrepreneur, I subscribe to your channel and find it highly informative. Thank you. I’ve been doing music for more than 15 years and even though I’m independent, I do have a music publishing company. I was wondering if you think it’s still beneficial to sign up with a Publishing Admin like Songtrust if I’m able to register my own works w/ ASCAP, Harry Fox, SoundExchange, Music Reports, and AARC. As an independent music publisher, is there any other royalties that I’m missing out on that a music pub like Songtrust would be able to collect on my behalf? Thanks, Kim
If you sign up with Songtrust, all of the songs that you register in your account with them, they would take over all registrations to all of the accounts you mentioned, and they would collect international royalties for you. With HFA, you can collect your own international royalties, by opting into the Mint license inside of your account. Be sure to watch my videos on the MLC. I have two. You need to sign up for their email address immediately. It will make sense once you watch the videos.
I’m a singer, i just want to get beats made and produce by a collaborator, but wing and write my own lyrics how do i make sure everyone involved gets paid but the royalties go the right way and the rigjt people get copyrights to what they did
great video once again so let's say I have Distrokid BMI writers/publishers account who can I sign up with in the US that will allow me to collect my own royalties for publishing administration
Hi thank you for the great explanation. I wants to know think if i already sign with APRA AMCOS as a Publisher, so i need a another publishing administrator (Eg : Songtrust) tool to collect my global publishing royalties? or APRA AMCOS is enough to collect the royalties for me & my writers?
Your publisher may already be collecting globally for you. If so, you should be good to go, but you need to check with them. Also check with your equivalent of soundexchange in your area for your digital performance royalties.
I am my own publishing administrator, but how would that affect my relationship with distro companies? Is there a list of platforms that you can upload directly to without a distributor?
It won't affect your distribution. Just choose a distributor, and not their administration arm. For instance, just choose Tunecore and NOT Tunecore Publishing, or CD Baby and NOT CD Baby Pro, and you will be alright and able to self administer your works.
ChrisJohnsonTV you have to first set up your publishing company with ASCAP or BMI. If you have your writer account already set up then you need to set up your publishing company where your writer account is. Then you would do all of the song registrations yourself instead of the Publishing Administrator. ASCAP, or BMI, SoundExchange etc. get my free download .
Thank you so much for this. However, i have just one question. At the latter part of this video, you stated in the recap that distributors are able to collect both performance and mechanical royalties. I thought distributors were restricted to collected just mechanical royalties, and then performance royalties are collected by publishing admin companies who licensed the songs to business who used them.
If you allow your distributor to upload your music to UA-cam, you will have a generic place on UA-cam, however, I always encourage each Artist to have their own Artist channel, personalized according to their brand and personality.
Thanks! I am going to make a album. only one song is complete (recoding and mastering)others are i completed the lyrics no budget to record and master it .now my plan is publish one song through tunecore or other distributors and eventually the money comes i can make other songs and add it on my album is that work and this is my first work

You would need to search which countries the distributors serve to better know which would serve you better. Most serve many countries, but to know exactly which ones, that info I do not have.
Choose a digital distributor, set up an account an upload your music for distribution. You’ll answer the questions they ask and follow the prompts. Distribute your music.
Do you have an email for contact? It would be helpful to reach out because I am very new to all of this. I have quite a few questions relating to this video but also beyond this video as well. I am really confused on the publishing portion of when BMI is asking about publishing and percentage, but i dont have a publisher, I only distribute music with Tunecore. Do I leave that section blank?

Do Publishing administrators upload your music for you to the distributor. If so will it show their names at the bottom like a record label? Or does the independent artist upload themselves and the publishing administration gets the data and collects that way?
Regarding: CDBaby pro account. I’ve been using CDBaby for over 20 years for distribution with the basic account only. I felt uncomfortable about signing up for the pro account because in the details of the contract it talks about CDBaby having access to my BMI account. With my limited knowledge and experience with these things I felt I should get more information before I signed up for the pro account even though on the surface it sounds like a great idea. Giving another company access to my BMI account feels uncomfortable even though it may be totally necessary.
The pro account means they would act as your publishing administrator and they would do ALL of your song registrations for you at BMI and other accounts on your behalf.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy The part I’m still stuck on is allowing CDBaby access to my BMI account. Maybe that access is a necessary component of the the CDBaby Pro account or working with any publishing administrator. Maybe I’m being paranoid and overly cautious based on not having a comprehensive understanding of how the publishing administration system works. I also wonder if I can work with a publishing administrator on certain songs or a limited collection of songs only. I really appreciate the information you are giving and welcome any comments about what I have explained. Thank you and all the best.
@@robinbongos they won’t go into your account. They will register through their account for you on your behalf. You can allot whatever songs you want them to administer for you. Just don’t get confused and double administer. Make sure the contract reads accordingly.
Let me just say that your content is really good. I really like the professional presentation voice; it reminds me of a well respected instructor I had in the past. In a future video, could you possibly create a flow chart for independent artists? Example: Step 1: Create/record a song. Step 2: Signup with BMI or ASCAP. as an artist Step 3: Choose a publishing company or start your own for $200 with BMI (3 year contract). Step 4: Signup with a distribution company. Step 5: Register/copyright work. However, I am certain the steps I listed above are in the incorrect order.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy Thank you I downloaded the checklist and reviewed it. Feedback for step #6: As a person with some knowledge of the music industry I know that I am mainly locked between choosing BMI and ASCAP as a PRO (unless I am invited to joining a different PRO as you stated in the checklist). Possible improvement for step #6: In the checklist, maybe if a hyperlink that tied to the different PRO websites was included in the checklist (i.e. step # 6 would have BMI and ASCAP hyperlinked to their respective websites). Feedback for step #18: I know there are several music distribution companies, that's why this step didn't list any. However, I would like to see your picks for possible music distribution companies. Possible improvement for step #18: Include some examples (e.g. Distrokid, OneRPM, CDBaby, etc,; however I understand if they are omitted to not show favoritism/endorsement towards a company. If I eventually become a UA-cam partner and my music video blows up and I get say $2,000 in Adsense money from views on that video, am I obligated to pay my producer $1000 based off our split? Or is UA-cam revenue from views/adsence, etc different than the royalties mentioned in your video? And if in fact I do owe money to my producer, does a PRO like ASCAP take care of that?
1. Yes you are responsible to pay him half of the Adsense money. 2. If the song was registered properly everywhere naming him as songwriter/publisher at PRO, the MLC etc. and master rights owner at SoundExchange at 50%, then he will get his proper share from everywhere else.
Hello, I need help. My goal is to get as much as my royalties as possible without putting all of my time into the business admin. part so I can still be creative and make music. My plan is to get an LLC, affiliate it with a PRO as a songwriter and publisher. I also plan to copyright my music and get an EIN. My question is: Do I sign up with SongTrust then hire a Distributor? Or do I skip SongTrust and hire a Distributor with a Pro such as CD Baby Pro or TuneCore Publishing? I do not want to do anything illegal but at the same time get my royalties and get help with administration. Thanks!
It’s a personal choice on which Admin Publisher you want to use. So if you go with CD Baby and also CD Baby Pro or CD Baby and Songtrust etc you’ll be fine.
TuneCore gives you all for free, means they give you 100% but... when I read the terms it says they can do anything they want with the song, the writer will remain the owner of the copyright but they get to play the cards! Is that good or bad? Cause Im wondering what should I do nd I dont know... Can you help? thanks love your channel! Is the one I trust.
Hi Alan, I'm so sorry that I'm just seeing this. My notifications haven't been working lately. No distributor gives you all for free. You are paying something. If you use Tunecore as your publishing administrator, they will work to register your music and you give them license to publish etc. Now as far as "anything they want", I can't comment on that without seeing the language in context. There's a new distributor I'm using this time around named Songflowr. All you do is pay one fee for your single, EP or album and that's it. You get to keep 100% of your royalties if you're looking for a good distributor without all of the legalese.
@@alansommer I wouldn't have recommended it if I hadn't read the terms. You're right, people don't read and they seem to not care about learning the business side of music. Have a great day!

Where does the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies or AARC fit into all this? It’s on your checklist of things to do before releasing a song.

Does HFA collect the the mechanical royalty payment from the sales/stream of the sound recording ? If not, then where is the mechanical generated from? Thanks in advance.

What if you had songs released without any paper work in the past? And you wish to track the Royalties?
If the songs were properly registered, you still should see royalties for the work if enough streams, downloads etcetera generated any. If not, watch this video, to learn where to go to see if you're owed royalties:
ua-cam.com/video/GZpl06TYpKM/v-deo.html
Can you please explain how royalty free music works, if you choose to use the music. Thanks!

You need to sign up to a PRO before you distribute. Once you know your release date the admin can then begin doing your song registrations.

Hello Ms. Watkins. I'm not sure if i got this right. So Administrator Publishing Companies only collect Royalties on the Musical Composition, and not on the Sound Recording?
That is correct.
how does this work with instrumentals?
The same!
Please send me your information on this.

I have two.
For instance, just choose Tunecore and NOT Tunecore Publishing, or CD Baby and NOT CD Baby Pro, and you will be alright and able to self administer your works.
what site or sites do you go to in order to become your own publishing administrator?

Regarding: CDBaby pro account. I’ve been using CDBaby for over 20 years for distribution with the basic account only. With my limited knowledge and experience with these things I felt I should get more information before I signed up for the pro account even though on the surface it sounds like a great idea. The Unwanted where do you want to upload your tracks to? Are you saying you want to release your music? If so, you need a digital distributor that will put your music on Spotify, iTunes, tidal etc. They will also put them on UA-cam if you like. Or you can put your own music on your UA-cam channel.
Yes I totally want to upload my tracks. And I'm the songwriter and the one who will record it, is it necessary to have a record deal?
@The Unwantedno no. You can release your own music easily. You'll need to choose a digital distributor such as CD Baby, Distrokid, Tunecore etc to release the music. If I were you, I would continue to watch as many videos as you can on this channel to learn as much as you can about the business first, so you'll know what to do! Study, perfect your craft, then start releasing your music!
Thanksss, i will subscribe for sure!
Is it a way I can contact you faster i have a couple questions
Give me your email address.

What you said in your video about music distribute distribution like ditto I paid I paid Edo and they don't nothing like what you just said I was all I had to do it all by yourself far as I could soon I find Ditto useless when you were talking about publishing does a company has got publisher says your publishing what you're talking about that sorry about that publishing thing you're talking about so she can pay $69 over there and they do probably stole your works I'm thinking about if I haven't decided yet ditto ditto done nothing for me at all I paid $29 95 or $20 $29 that's $29 a year did I think they're going to get more money on the 22nd of May 2022
Cancel them and try CDBaby or Tunecore
What's that CD baby Pro or cdbaby
@@DANNYGATESTHEAGEDSINGER Pro if you want them to be your administrative publisher as well. CDBaby to distribute your music only.
@@TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy little bit expensive for me is it possible to have CD baby pro and also said he baby at same time CD baby pro has got a very long contract which are not to which most of it I don't even understand I was with ditto won't stage four day of virtually useless and they've done nothing for me yet did no expect to get money off me on the 22nd of May 2022 I don't think that's going to happen somehow they don't look like they're going to give me a refund far as I'm concerned it oh is useless
