The worst thing about owning a Hyundai, But we bought one anyway!? Our NSPORT i30N project car

  • The worst thing about driving an i30N... is that people think it's going to be slow and refuse to let you pass...
    If you'd said I'd be driving a Hyundai one day, I'd say you were off your rocker, or I'd made some pretty poor life decisions.. But here we are with our very own i30N..
    After test driving one for a media release last year, and again earlier this year, we just had to add one to our collection.
    And so begins Project NSPORT.. Follow us as we test, tune, modify and race our i30N.
    In this video we throw it on the dyno minutes after taking delivery, laid down some impressive stock figures, then load it up with a set of Trofeo R semi slicks and headed off to Queensland Raceway for some spirited driving.
    At the track the little hatch back didn't let us down either.
    Some highlights of today's track day in the i30N, and one negative to taking a Hyundai to the track...
    1) It's so frustrating getting stuck behind a guy that's fast in a straight line but slow around corners.. Note: It's illegal in Time-Attack to overtake on corners, cars fast on the straight are instructed in the driver's briefing to allow faster cornering cars to pass, blocking is against the rules.
    2) I also went for some lawn mowing across the infield after switching to brand new tyres.. Oooops .... :P
    3) It's quite easy to get sideways :D
    This is the first FWD I've ever owned, so I need to get a bit of driver instruction I think.
    Today's best time was 1:04.1 on the clubman circuit.. There were 83 cars on track today so it was difficult to get a clean run. I think I can get into the 1:03's relatively easily.
    To put into perspective, here's my previous PB's in my other cars:
    Lamborghini Huracan (stock): 1:00.610
    Nissan R35 GTR (modified, Z221): 0:59.49
    Nissan 180sx (500hp RB26, Z221): 0:58.807
    Either way this car is incredible fun for completely stock!!
    Probably a second or two in it with a driver mod.

      they're simply going on past cars, a bit like the saying it must be made in china is common even though some Chinese made products are decent, Hyundai used to be utter crap but they have seriously improved over the last few years , probably more than any other manufacturer.

    • @Forgan_Mreeman
      @Forgan_Mreeman 5 років тому +7

      @@axeami1354 I agree with you. most are stuck in their old ideas of what Hyundai USED to be. but please PLEASE try not to put Chinese car brands and Hyundai in the same sentence lol. A big reason why some Chinese car brands are 'decent' is because they steal/copy engineering plans from more established brands and put it in Their own cars. Its a law that foreign companies wanting to sell cars in China must share their work. Hyundai makes awesome cars now because they worked their ass off and hired new people and fired others that tarnished their brand name. i'm not, jumping down your throat. just venting lol.

    I love that fact that I was one of the few that started out in a Hyundai with my first car and never looked back. Still have my first car ( Hyundai Elantra) that has 237,000 miles on it. Take it out every few weeks and it still kicks over every single time. Next up was a 2004 Sonata, 2007 Sonata, 2011 Sonata. 2013 Optima and current car 2016 Genesis sedan. I've been telling people for years to jump on these vehicles, and it wasn't till my Genesis that people started believing me. Paid 16,000 less than my cousin did for his Cadillac which he was blown away how much better my Genesis was. And paid about the same as my brother did for his Impala LTZ. He was sick to see how much better my Genesis is to that over priced crap. Now I'm undecided between my next car between the G70 and Stinger. I really want the G70 but think it will be hard going into a car that small compared to the Genesis. Waiting to see if Kia releases the 2019 Stinger soon and if the new Stinger is on par with the G70.

    Will need e85 to push it to where you want it, be interesting to see if the transmission can handle a big power gain, the engine should be ok.

    • @saber0089
      @saber0089 5 років тому

      How do you know the engine will be alright? Does it share an engine with another car that's been pushed before?

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed 5 років тому

      The limitations are emissions, heat, detonation height and internal strength. All production engines are tuned to last the full warranty period at least, which simply means they are tuned for redundancy. If you can keep heat levels down and increase the det height by running E85 then you’ll easily make 20% more power and retain reliability. Above that you’re going to need supporting mods such as a bigger turbo etc.

    Thanks for the great video - I love my I30N performance. I could be wrong here but whilst on the track you didn't have ESP fully disabled (which isn't a super bad thing because sport lets you slip a lot - plus you can still totally loose it with it on). Good drivers correct manually still. But it seemed like you drove it in normal mode. Did you experiment with N mode and a custom setup whilst on track e.g. suspension slightly looser but everything else full on? N mode is built for a smooth track so it's perfect for it. I was looking at the driver display and I didn't see "N" or "CUSTOM" and you could periodically hear the brake assist beeping. Please keep them coming though, can't wait to see what else you do! Hopefully you can give me some ideas.

    • @danielwood3690
      @danielwood3690 5 років тому

      Ok I stand corrected, the first lap it has "N" on the driver screen and in the later laps I think I can faintly make out "CUSTOM", did you experiment as I originally said. Cheers again :-)!

      Yessir, It was my first day driving a FWD :) Initially I went with ESC on, then turned it off at the end. :) It gets very tail happy but still controllable like a RWd.. very cool car!

      @@StreetFXofficial thanks for the reply! I've had a lot of hot hatches and I actually traded my c63 for my i30n. I've never raced RWD but a c63 is quite a handful. I have a couple of questions about your hub dyno. So did the car produce much more power than you expected? I've been reading up and others say that multiplying the number by 1.3 in past experience gives a good indication of wheel horse power. Not scientific of course! What's your past experience and job, are you a professional racing driver, what made you buy it as a project car? Also please let me know if you get any weird sudden power cut outs under hard acceleration as I have. Although now you've modified it I'm sure you won't :-)
