Really interesting choice your made, in the greater scheme. I'm really happy to hear like-minded thoughts of how good the car, to everyones surprise, is. We just drove it ourselves in our review and we're blown away. Most journalists really miss out on the car's capabilities when they don't go on track/push it hard enough. This makes me thing of wanting to start a project out of this car too...
This is awesome. It's cool to see the transformation of this car from a bone stock I30N to a car that is capable of competing in time attack races with purpose built professional racecars. Just think of how far Hyundai has come since the early to mid 90s when they were using Mitsubishi engines, and now they're producing cars that are actually competitive straight off the showroom floor. Great work Hyundai! I'm blown away.
Bloody terrific video and project guys. I had my heart set on a Focus RS, but after driving an i30N, I’ve changed my mind. The day one of my bikes sells, I’m ordering one as a weekend toy and occasional daily drive. Oh, plus a trip to Tassie.
Top effort guys and this was great to watch! Love this fantastic little rocket Hyundai has created! As a manufacturer, they are only getting better too! Would love to pick one of these up myself one day. :)
Hyundai in Australia is like Honda back in the late 80s. Before vtec, nsx, crx, ef civic generation nobody thought anything much about Honda cars. They were considered good value reliable shopping trolleys. But behind the scenes a new generation breed from formula 1 engineers was unleashed that made v8s from the factory a joke at the time. Hyundai and Kia are like the new cool kids on the block with something to prove to the world and they are doing a fantastic job so far!
Brand snobs everywhere! all those slating it clearly have never seen or been in one. These retail at £28500 so about £4-5k cheaper than the type R, spend that on simple mods like exhaust, intercooler and induction it will match if not better the type R.. another point on how the N is a better car is all the settings can be customised, so you can have full performance with softer suspension. In the type R you can’t individually set up the car, it’s R mode or nothing. The cornering on the Hyundai is fantastic on the British roads so until you’ve been in or own one get the facts right, it’s a lot of car for the value
I think it's a great car that is very capable and fun. Still prefer my GTI though. Interior alone in my MK7 puts the N to shame. That aside, the only way for Hyundai to go is up with N division. I'm excited to see where they go.
Yeah, lets spend money on mods and the whole thing becomes even more unreliable then the civic type r. Never ever tell me mods make a car more reliable.
And then the Type R gets a simple Stage 1 Remap and runs 375hp, bye bye 🙈 Just stop talking bullshit, you clearly dont't know much about cars. The i30N was _never_ meant to be a Racecar. The Engine is a standard Hyundai/Kia Theta II from 2010 and is also used in many base models like Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata and Kia Optima, Sorento and Sportage. And no, it wasnt modified to run in the N models. Alfred Biermann just wanted a cheap car that brings joy to the masses and he knew that it wouldnt beat cars like the the Civic or a Megane. Thats why they never tried to break a record on the Nürburgring. It simply wasnt built to do this and thats why it is so heavy too. As i mentioned before: its a street car with a bit more horsepower for the masses and not a Rececar for the road like the Civic Type R, Renault Megane RS Trophy R or Golf GTI TCR. The Type R was built to break the record for fwd cars on all race tracks in the world and thats a big difference. Honda made a new Engine, new Gearbox, new Suspension and so on...they are simply 2 complete different cars so please stop comparing them and just enjoy driving your car 😉
I fkn knew it. I fkn knew it and I fkn knew it, why did I buy a WRX and not listen to my heart and pick up an N. Fantastic video. Wish I could give you 2 likes.
🙄 cos a full sponsored build would only do basic bolt on mods, even though they'd have a near unlimited budget. Gotta love people jumping to conclusions that don't even make sense.
Don't believe everything mate. "Performance mods only - chip, suspension, intercooler, exhaust." Civic Type R would eat this Hyundai for breakfast with a little of the same kinda lovin
build costs are really way off in reality, For the average person the mods are going to be at least $10k aud worth, then you are forgetting labor costs or time, which again in reality are at least another $3-5k, depending on mates rates or no tax cash deals. So really its around $13-15k aud. maybe in Aus but here in NZ there is only a $4000 aud difference between a Type R and i30n, I appreciate what Hyundai have done with this thing, however the base performance ( with the same tyres of course) of a type R is noticeably higher. So if i was ever to buy something new, the Type R would clearly win my pick. Do what they have done, and it would obviously be faster again.
Fucking LOVING this project right now. Something about the under dog absolutely smashing the competition is just so good. Cannot wait to own one of these. Also really cool to see some new mods coming out for this from you guys already. MAAAAD!
One car you didn't mention is the Renault Megane. Would have been great to see you, or someone like you, do this to one 4 years ago to a Trophy R. A Trophy R is at least good for a 1:45.9 at SMSP and that's in my incapable hands. Jordan would certainly get it into the 1:30s with his skill and ability. This is only just the start of your i30N project. Scary (and impressive) to think how far you'll take it.
$7-8G for all the work they did LOL, no way! I would guess $12-15G for all that work and parts, and seeing as all those parts were custom made you could easily double that...
Hard to gauge as most of the parts were prototypes that are still being worked on. Retail will be somewhere around there. Just the basics like fmic/chip/exhaust and brake pads will get you 90% of the way there and be less than $5k. Another $2k for wheels and tyres and you're almost there.
Reasonable responses, 7 to 8k seems like the retail price not including labor, considering these arent retail products and these guys hourly is probably like 200$ and hour, the final price could be........
Michael Hayes the guys building the stuff aren’t doing it for fun. Now the R an D is done they’ll have made programs an jigs so they can bang em out an offer it to the public at retail price. 👊🏻

This is great, kinda sad knowing that you guys didn't manage to score it higher after putting that TCR wing as due to weather.. but man, Good luck!! will love to see more i30N content..
To be honest we need more straight line speed to make up for the drag of the wing. Until a full ecu is available we are very limited to power output. Currently we're full bolt on and piggy back. Great solution for people who are chasing the extra edge, but to make maximum use of the upgrades we will need a plug in live tunable ECU. So keen to get that happening and get up to around 350-380whp. :P
Great project! The man-maths is awesome though, even better than my own. The MCA Reds, XForce exhaust and Race Chip alone break the $6,000 mark and then there's all the other stuff. And if you're a muppet like me with tools then you need to factor in fitting costs. The time, effort and expense going into this project is fantastic. Please continue with more updates with all of the different events this car enters. Looking forward to it.
+Yuri Chernenko please note the exhaust is a catless system with no resonators (race only) so far cheaper than a valvetronic street one. Racechip is around $900. Mca reds run around $2500. Intercooler alone will be around $1k when released. We didn't include the cosmetic mods as they haven't got a price tag yet. It's hard to tell how much the total to a general consumer will be since most of this gear is prototype stuff and costs a lot to develop, so customers will have it easier once we get the formula down :)
No doubt! And I get you'd have some sponsorship or promotion agreement with the various suppliers. But just for fun I thought I'd put a guesstimate together for a road registered and road legal car (and even then you'd need it engineered in NSW): MCA Reds = $2,900 XForce turbo back 3" Varex with cat = $3,000 Racechip = $900 GCG high-flowed turbo = $500 PWR intercooler & radiator = $1,200 Koya Wheels = $1,520 Yokohama AD08R = $1,400 Circo brake pads and slotted disc rotors = $850 Custom air intake with pod = $350 TOTAL = $12,620 (+ fitting) Then there are a few things not on the list like race seat, harness, Blits FRP bonnet, CF splitter, CF skirts, TCR hatch with wing, tuning, etc.
sick, sick project and great base car. slippery in the rear, maybe you could fit half an inch to an inch wider rims and bigger tires by expanding the wheelwells - will help grip and stability massively. then do an ECU tune
Just to clear something up, None of the gti's were running "600 odd horsepower". The mk7 gti on the field was running approx 350 atw. And the other golf u were showing was a MK6 Golf R. Lucky to be making 330 atw. Running off the shelf tunes. I know both the volksmuller cars personally.
We cleared this up a few days back after chatting to those guys :) it had been a long week and I'd got my facts wrong in the video 😔 One is apparently just shy of 500 at the fly, the other is somewhere around 350.
@@rhys0564 the mk6 golf r is running the APR stage 3 kit on standard engine. Using normal production file for 105 octane fuel. Mk7 GTI running an is38 turbo with the APR software to suit. Both are packages used by many customers on street. Both running manual gearbox with mechanical LSD. Great work from the team @streetfx for building a great car. Can't wait to see what it can do I. The future once more performance mods become available. Keep up the great work!
Are there no negative impacts from the switch in the rear suspension from a separate spring and strut to one unit? On a GTI, which has a similar rear lower control arm setup, when you add a coilover kit you keep the separate shock and spring and add an adjustable length piece to the spring.
I think you've upset all the JDM fan boys 😂 Personally, I think you have shocked the competition. Hopefully your efforts will stop the whole "But it's a Hyundai" crowd. I own a Subaru BRZ and it's a well balanced car and always wondered how it would go around the track full steam :)
Great job on that hyundai, it has been the first attemp of the brand to get into the hothatch market, they could have relased a more complete package, but it's really a good car. I could not stop watching at the car releasing black smoke, I guess that the map needs more development and they went on the safe side regarding AFR. How it was with oil temperatures? Usually stock cars with just a remap tend to get quite high oil temps at track.
There were a couple of these at Laguna Seca this past Sunday for the Intercontinental GT Challenge finale. Everyone I talked to were impressed by their performance on the track. Unfortunately one had to retire and we got to see the crew working on the front end that got smashed up. They also had the new Veloster N on display and while it was a nice car, I really wish we could get the i30N here in the States. I'd really like the proper 4 door hatch rather than the odd three door design of the Veloster.
Amen. A year ago when I heard about this car I knew my next car would either be a Type R, Golf R or i30N. Now that we only get a veloster, it'll probably be a Type R.
Brilliant stuff guys. Wanted to ask whether it would be worth adding/ modifying the chasis to include Engine/ Transmission Mounts to keep everything slightly more steady and get the extra power down to the wheels and improve traction/ acceleration? I understand that the N was specifically designed to increase stiffness, but I wonder if the extra power can be supported more-so with improved stiffness? Cheers.
End off video, in car turbo sound. A want it , everyone likes the underdog , well done the mechanics for tuning a new car with no parts available on the market
could we get more info on the brakes? did you swap out to braided lines? Pad compounds? the engine still running stock internals? where did you plug in the wideband to monitor fuel? injectors? fuel pump?
Are these performance mods going to be marketed by you guys. We need a go to company for performance parts, similar to APR for the VW crowd. I'm waiting for the fastback version to arrive. I was going to go the VW route (manual transmission), but since VW sales told me they wen't interested in my money (and I'm not going to buy an over priced DSG Golf that's unreliable to boot) so it's hello Hyundai.
+Ozgrade3 Australia we will be listing all the parts we helped develop as soon as we're finished with testing :) keep an eye out on our site! StreetFX.com.au
Unreliable DSG? You're having a laugh mate. If you treat the car well and service it regularly it will last longer than most manual transmissions. My mate owns a Mk5 GTI with over 250,000km...DSG is absolutely perfect from factory.
Daniel cadida da siuva I have rebuilt 5 of them in my families cars////I'll pass on unreliable DSG rubbish. In 30 years the only reference to DSG will be in the automotive history book. The torque converter is superior in every way.

We cleared this up a few days back after chatting to those guys :) it had been a long week and I'd got my facts wrong in the video 😔
One is apparently just shy of 500 at the fly, the other is somewhere around 350.
@@StreetFXofficial Not sure exactly what the R is running. I do know the mk7 gti is running APR's stg3.
Keen to see what else you guys do with the N
@@rhys0564 the mk6 golf r is running the APR stage 3 kit on standard engine. Using normal production file for 105 octane fuel.
Mk7 GTI running an is38 turbo with the APR software to suit.
Both are packages used by many customers on street.
Both running manual gearbox with mechanical LSD.
Great work from the team @streetfx for building a great car.
Can't wait to see what it can do I. The future once more performance mods become available. Keep up the great work!
Well done team!
Are there no negative impacts from the switch in the rear suspension from a separate spring and strut to one unit? On a GTI, which has a similar rear lower control arm setup, when you add a coilover kit you keep the separate shock and spring and add an adjustable length piece to the spring.
More videos of this car please it looks awesome
Fantastic sleeper...
Go shake up the world boy's
I looks as good as it goes mate 😃
What modifications were put on? Would love to do this when I get mine. Thank you
You have 255 in the front and 235 on the rear?Have you think that maybe thats the reason for the happy tail?
I think you've upset all the JDM fan boys 😂
Personally, I think you have shocked the competition.
I want to see you guys try out the new Sedan N.
Cheers.
That turbo spool from the cabin is fucking sexy.
great to see the rise of Hyundai
End off video, in car turbo sound. A want it , everyone likes the underdog , well done the mechanics for tuning a new car with no parts available on the market
could we get more info on the brakes? did you swap out to braided lines? Pad compounds? the engine still running stock internals? where did you plug in the wideband to monitor fuel? injectors? fuel pump?
Hello, great project. Where did you buy the tailgate and spoiler?
@@Ozgrade3 In your case probably best to stick with a manual, leave the DSG to the big boys
Daniel cadida da siuva - that's an immature comment -
