How usable is Afrikaans for an Aussie? I speak Swedish and together with English it makes a lot of this understandable I could learn pretty quickly.
Bannicus About 60 000 ex-pat South Africans in Perth alone. Could be pretty useful. Easy to learn, understand & speak. Start with the Belgium dialect of Dutch.

But if I lived in South Africa would people bother or just speak English with me, and same in the Netherlands/Belgium?
+Bannicus Well if you seems to struggle with it at first, most people would try to ease you by speaking English, but if you explain to them that you're trying to learn Afrikaans, they'll welcome your effort for sure :). Especially in more less urban places, they'll love you for it.
I speak dutch and german. was quite easy to learn due to speaking Afrikaans. I will start with german though. then Afrikaans would be a breeze
easier than Dutch , sylables and tenses made less, easier to speak , less accent, it's backward or lazy Dutch so to say , our ancestors figured there were easier ways to say things . plus mix some English and Zulu in and add 300 years of "hardegat" and "taai wees" and you get Afrikaans , made in Afrika. *hardegat means hardass, and taai wees means be tough
