Every time I watch your videos Ken, I can't help but think of how much fun it would be to be apart of your crew and build workshops and various buildings such as this one! The thought comes to mind quite often to leave my career as a licensed Master Electrician and learn how to do framing. Monetarily it would be hard to 'start over' in another trade, but I think that the enjoyment and education I would gain would be the compensation. Thanks for bringing us along!
I enjoyed this. It turned out good. My daughter used to come with me too … to the job site. Then she grew up… I wish I could’ve bottle up that time with her.
I like the fact you built your own trusses, makes sense on a 16' building. You guys are all very well organized and an efficient building machine. If I were to be critical, I would of installed four cripples on each end trusses to better carry the osb. Enjoy your vids a breath of fresh air on the youtube. Wishing you and your crew a happy New Year.
Thanks for sharing the price, that's always helpful. The Shop Nation fella is building a shed, a nice shed, but I bet he'll have $25k in it after it's said and done.
I’m a carpenter working in Canada. I think that’s a steel of a deal! Well done. There’s always different ways to do things, so no point in debating technique. All the work they do seems to be done right. And I think that’s a great price for the good quality and efficient work.
nice shop. in 5 years u wish u went larger u watch. lol. my shop keeps me from going off the deep end. running a lathe is very therapeutic. thank u for sharing sir
Your attention to detail is very good 👌 for example, the vinyl siding on the long wall. You made sure the vinyl siding is overlapping towards the back so when looking at it the sidewall from the front, looks like one whole piece of vinyl siding because you can't see the overlap from the front! A lot of builders don't care about that but you do. Great job 👍
I’ll be watching this again. I’m building the same structure and I’ll be able to do it in the same amount of days …. We’ll I mean I have to add a zero after the number of day so 40 days sound about right. Keep them coming. You got a great crew.
Thanks for making all of these videos Ken! You’ve given me inspiration to tackle my own garage. Along with the essential craftsman’s channel. Have a merry Christmas!
It was great to see Lauren help you with the concrete pour. Dan is amazing at moving everything. It's really going up fast! I'm happy to see that they put windows on the backside so they can enjoy the view. I'm not sure I've seen Josh before. Beautiful little building! Thanks for this Ken. Merry Christmas!
Hey Ken, Thx for the recap. BTW, as far as your new weight loss program, it should include a provision for stimulating the elimination process. Many folk do not "go" as often as they should. But the rule of thumb for a healthy digestive tract is "One in-one out!" We use herbal teas which can help with this. Many are available at your local stores, and online. Of course lots of veg and fruits are recommended. We curmudgeons often must eat more produce to make up for what we didn't get while younger!
I notice you leave the gap in the osb at the top of the walls. I imagine that's because hot air rises and creats better wall cavity ventilation. When I framed houses many years ago, we would have the gap in the middle of the wall between the sheets, which seems stronger to me as it's tied into the top plate.
Amazing video as usual! I’m impatiently waiting for ryobi to come out with a cordless framing gun! I might end up biting the bullet soon and purchase the one you have!
I really like how you pre build your garage packages in your shop then trailer everything to the site you are very efficient and I bet you can control your costs better I just subscribed I am a carpenter in northern Minnesota and I’m still learning better ways to do things every day. Thanks
Really enjoy your videos Ken.... Its always enjoyable watching pros at their trade doing their thing..... Merry Christmas to you and your crew and your families.....
Nice job on the workshop! I had a 20 x 20 built by Tuff shed for a total cost of $15,000. It's all preconstructed at their local factory. It's in Florida near the coast so they had to install hurricane straps and Simpson wall anchors. The walls had to be pressure treated according to code. But it was still affordable and they had it up in one day. I don't know how I ever lived without the workshop. It's a must have for any craftsman.
It's insane to think that the quotes I get to rebuild roughly the same size room onto my house costs $200K. Yes, I'd have more cost tying it into the house but it's pretty basic room. Great shop you have there!
Nice job. I think I would of stubbed some conduit through the concrete for some electric. But maybe that’s not code where your at. 🤔 nonetheless.. beautiful area. All you need is a lake and boat and your in heaven 😅
feel so wierd when i see how little rebar there is. 2 feet by 2 feet. in sweden we have to have 8 inch by 8 inch in houses and i think 6 inch by 6 inch in garages
Loved this build, great craftsmanship. Glad to see a metal roof installed. I’m one of those viewers from the Canadian side hahaha. Can you tell me if you put roof vents on? I have a similar 24x24 and putting on an exposed fastener metal roof and wondered if I needed a ridge vent since mine is not heated and not attached to my house, thank you.
I put up a 7'x 14' shed 10 years ago. Almost finished it when Hurricane Sandy hit. Did a rush job to get it closed up. No time for shingles, only house wrap on the roof. It made it thru the night. The next day I put the scaffolding back up. (I had no help) Put on the shingles and started with all the details. I put in a pair of cheap doors that haven't held up over the years. I'm thinking of putting in a pair of steel slab doors. I don't know if I really need the buck for it. I can put them in without it. What do you think of this idea? The whole thing was under $3k. I really should have put it on a slab. It's just 2x6 on 8'' sonotubes/concrete. 2' deep. btw; I put in hurricane clips before I knew about the storm.
I installed a steel double door and a single door in my 12 x 16 shed (see above). These doors are so much nicer than the home made door on my garden shed and I love having locksets/deadbolts to secure things. I say go for the steel doors! They ain't cheap, but you will thank yourself after the pain in your wallet goes away. :)
Around here in AZ they want $12,000 to build a 12ftx16ft shed/workshop. Not really sure how much just the concrete slab would be and then build the shed/workshop myself, have to check that out.
Great build! Why not zip sheathing with r value and moisture barrier incorporated. Or is client insulating on 2x4 rafters,.which probably means inefficiency at the 2x4 every 16in as cold permeates from outside to inside. Overall... I thoroughly enjoyed. I am a newbie to this, trying to learn as much before my new build..thanks again!
Really dislike that DeWalt ‘fisher-price’ gear winding sounds when it fires! Metabo 18V or 36v (Lifetime Warranty sold me) or Milwaukee M18 for me! Thanks for sharing your expertise, brother!
Man, I remember building a 20' X 30' garage with lap siding and brick front, that matched our house, in 1994 for $6000 total. I did all of the labor except the concrete floor, brick front and building the roof trusses. My how costs have increased.
Wow as a retired Laborer / Carpenter I'm impressed that you used an asphalt rake on the slab. Using a power screed is cheating, I always had to use a 2x4 or 2x6. I'm surprised you used a whirly bird. For a shop / garage slab I've always favored a medium broom finish. It must be nice living in a free state. Here in California between regulations, fees and structural engineer's stamp it's prohibitively expensive.
It crossed my mind that watching Ken and his crew is like "poetry in motion". It is good to watch Ken's channel. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Thanks for watching

Nice
I enjoyed this. It turned out good.

Depends on the snow load and the spacing of the trusses. Why use extra material when it’s not required?
That’s one large fella there he’s like your personal crane! Looking great I’m now officially addicted to your videos . Take care
Haha thanks for watching
I have build my 20x20 shed few years back and I love it. watching this video is so satisficing. Good job guys.
Thanks
Hey Ken, love seeing guys at your age still on the tools. I’m about the same age in my cabinet shop.
Nice thanks for watching
That big guy is such a great resource to have in this build. I wish I could lift and reach as much as he can.
Yes for sure
Awe your daughter will remember this forever.
Super relaxing to watch this build - thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ken deserves the "World's Best Contractor" award
Haha thanks
Thanks for sharing the price, that's always helpful. The Shop Nation fella is building a shed, a nice shed, but I bet he'll have $25k in it after it's said and done.
even at the DIY level, it's easy to see that interior finishing, trim, electric, heat can add another $8k to this job.

Thanks. Wow plastering is an art.
You have such a great way of keeping the process running smoothly at each step of the build.!!!!!!

something so inherently comforting about watching a shelter being built (home)

Thanks merry Christmas to you

Looks exceptionally awesome your work is second to none may God continue to bless both of you and your family's outstanding work.
Ken, must be cold in vt giving you time to edit videos. So thanks for this one. Happy holidays to you and your crew.
Yes it’s cold here
I think a covered breezeway between would be a good idea. Or maybe attach the garage to the house. Nice job as usual Ken.
Thanks

Here, in Connecticut, the crooked contractors would charge, between, 45-60k for the same project. Thanks for being one of the good guys.
Thanks. I bet cost of living down there adds to the cost
This is a relaxing video with the music in the video very good.
Thank you very much

Loved the job! Great work! Best wishes from the UK.

These videos are very instructive. At 20:28 I thought we might get a full kool-aid guy busting through the wall animation
Haha
Great job, might need you to come help me build my massive garage when I start to build it. Keep up the great work!
Haha thanks
Great job. 👍 Greetings from Denmark.

A lot of people complain about those Dewalt nailers but you guys seem to like them
Thank you I want to build my first house now
Haha. Go
If he put a well placed window on the right he'd be able to have the wife hand him lunch with neither of them leaving the house or workshop.
Haha true
If she cooks like my wife, that's why he didn't.
But also the possibility of the wife taping on the window constantly. Taking away from very important work🤣.
@@kenskarpentry thanks h
U really want a window for wife peeking in?

yeah in Oklahoma lol! I cant build a birdhouse here in Canada for less than $100 lol.
That said, good job
Wow
When doing the concrete with rebar pre set j hook anchor bolts tied together with rebar pre drilled needs approx

Hi Ken, Awesome garage! What’s the floor to peak height of this build and roof pitch?
About 12 feet high 512 roof pitch
Man, I remember building a 20' X 30' garage with lap siding and brick front, that matched our house, in 1994 for $6000 total. I did all of the labor except the concrete floor, brick front and building the roof trusses. My how costs have increased.
If that is hybrid felt you are using on the roof you might make sure to use cap nails/staples or else the exposed fasteners will leak.
Thanks
I didn’t see conduit in the slab for electric . How did they get wiring in the building?
There’s conduit on the outside
I never seen nobody put plywood up like that on the roof Usually run it cross the rafters
Nice job
Thanks
Ken, it looks like you accidentally spliced in a few out-of-order frames starting at 21:03.
That Dan is a giant of a man. By the way, were these shop-built trusses by you guys or from a truss company?
We built those
Hi, great video. Was wondering if there was a reason you didn't put the walk-in door on the house side? Would seem better security. Thanks!
There’s going to be a fairly big snow pile between the buildings
Oh wow, thanks for the reply

@@kenskarpentry youre welcome
Why wouldn't you place the door near the main house side, have to walk all around the thing. Nice garage none the less
Salam to ALL Great
I don't get I built a 10x20 for less than $5k and built mine with 6x6 floor joists and beams. Where did you buy your materials? Is it your state.
Nice sounds like a different build for comparison sake.
Would you be willing to fly out here to Utah and build something like this in my backyard?
Thanks but sorry can’t do that
When are you going to get a nice DeWalt electric framing nailer?
Whats the price of concrete these days? Im wanting to build a garage for my 18’ boat.
Around $170 per yard
