This is when actors told a story using their abilities, no special effects, no shoot em ups, just great acting and filming. Bravo!
Not to mention in intelligible english!
As many times as I have seen all the Sherlock Holmes movies, I never tire of them. There was at time when movie making and acting was a real art.
I have played a lot of the old B&W films, while I file papers, clean out my desk, do other things, because they make the task more enjoyable, go faster.
And they are great movies, even if I have seen it 100 times.
Feel the same
yes and Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were the best duo

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce where the finest protagonists to grace 221B Baker Street.
Well stated !
I liked porgy and bess
Basil Rathbone one of the greats who played Sherlock Holmes.
yes he is but its too bad This Doctor Watson was played as a loud lumbering fool. It really wrecks it
In the books Dr Watson was a very intelligent person. Think it was Hollywood trying to inject humour having Dr Watson as a bumbling fool. Have to admit I did find him entertaining. @@TheGoldbaxter
Basil was THE greatest Holmes portrayer in that during the late forties and early fifties his radio acting successors sounded just like him... as did Nigel's.
The best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was Jeremy Brett. It was on British Television and he is acknowledge as the best also he portrayed Sherlock Holmes in the correct period and the closest to how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle portrayed him in his books. Basil Rathbone was a very very close second.
Cannot say the same for Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson, in the books he was portrayed as intelligent and knowledgeable. Bruce's portrayal was for comedic effect. @@MichaelofOmaha
I cannot disagree. Having read all of the stories as a youth it is true that Hollywood took many liberties, especially regarding Dr. Watson. But the radio and movie series featuring Basil and Nigel grew on me and became rather endearing in a way that Sir Doyle may have... tolerated. @@Gerrygambone
These movies hold my attention in a way that modern movies utterly fail to do! 😮so interesting and beautiful to watch, and everyone speaks so clearly.
Well said.
And they manage to utter whole sentences without swearing.
For their time this film adaptation of Sherlock Holmes was terrific. It cannot hold a candle to the recent British productions of Sherlock homes featurng Jeremy Brett.
@@ricardo53100 Watson is well portrayed in the Jeremy Brett series as well! Yes, I'm a fan of that one too. And the Ronald Howard/H. Marion Crawford Holmes and Watson series! (B&W, 1954?)
@@ricardo53100 Saying the Rathbone Holmes cannot hold a candle to the Brett Holmes is rather harsh.
Perhaps fairer to say they were the leading Holmes of their era.

Such wonderful old films - a beginning , a middle and an end !!!

Love watching the old black and white movies of Sherlock holmes
This series of 14 films is a treasure trove of skilled British movie making. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were more than just a good natural pairing of the roles of Holmes and Watson. They were seasoned professional actors of the highest order, the kind of performers the Brits were able to produce by the hundreds in that era. Of course, the production values that run uniformly through the series show the British mastery of the genre. I own a set of the films and over the years, I have watched each one at least a dozen times. Finest movie experience in years.
I couldn’t agree more. These are timeless classics. Basil Rathbone said in an interview that he was reviled by the public when he announced that he would not play Sherlock Holmes anymore. Wish they did make more of these.
I don't think they were made in Britain. USA production. Check it out.
@@mauricemosheim4733 I agree, I think they were filmed on a universal lot in Hollywood, but you never know.
So very British of Holmes to assist Dr. Watson in solving this crime.
Outstanding plots, perfectly deducted, seamless diolog, effortlessly spoken. Camera angles in perfect positioning and earm lighting. Class all Class from beginning to end. Like nothing hollywood can produce today. Thank you for sharing with us.
Much gratification to FEATURE FILM for another great classic movie. These British Sherlock Holmes movies are true treasures which can be enjoyed no matter how many times they are watched. Thank you so much for sharing! 😊
There is no Sherlock Holmes like Basil Rsthbone.
Love these old homes films .
I never pass up a Sherlock Holmes movie, no matter how many times I haven't it! One of my favorite for sure.
Better than modern Sherlock movies any day
Just different 😂
I am enjoying these though ...
Basil Rathbone perhaps the greatest Holmes
Love the Sherlock Holmes movies
Always my favourite Sherlock and Watson. Thanks for showing
Thanks for bringing us this gem.
Good Show old boys. Always loved Basil and Nigel in this rendition. Thank you for the post. ❤
Love myself some Sherlock Holmes!!! Keep 'em coming! 👍
I like this movie l seen it before on TV. I COULD WATCH IT OVER AND OVER.
I love this age of tweeds..!..
I have the full box list of all these films, never tire of them.
"Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Code" was the film's UK title. To watch the remastered 16:9 print with its well cleaned-up soundtrack, for free, was a pleasure. The occasional inline visuals and couple of pops flagging the channel were a small price to pay, especially compared to YT adverts every 10 minutes. Thank you Feature Film, I have subscribed.
The only reason this is 16:9 is because they chopped off the top and the bottom. This film was made in 1.37:1, which is 1.33:1 (or 4:3) plus the sound track, like all others at the time. The sound is no better than the unbutchered version that I have. Watch the original here ua-cam.com/video/QXnWxR7jOYM/v-deo.html
"amazing how Dr. Watson remained so clueless." (::) hahaha
Missed series as kid n at 60 LUVIN THEM ❤
This was also known as Dressed to Kill, made in 1946 not 42. Released May 24th, 1946 (New York City, New York) June 7th, 1946 (United States)
Story lines that complemented actors was the key. No foul mouth morons or psychopaths. Where do we go from here? Thinking has taken a back seat.
Moriarty , known psychopath!😅
I rarely watch modern films. I was at a friends and saw Aquaman. I was cringing.
It's really too bad the person posting the movie didn't look to see what the movie was actually called. This is NOT "The Secret Code", but rather "Dressed to Kill".
What’s really bad is when someone portrays criticism instead of gratitude towards the person providing them free entertainment through the sharing of their movies here on UA-cam. Your comment is of course INCORRECT. This movie IS “The Secret Code.” That’s the UK title for the movie. It was released for use in the USA under the name “Dressed To Kill.” Same movie, 2 titles. British movies and novels as well, were released in the USA under a different name. Better go wipe that egg off your face now. 😂
Oops maybe they had a distracted moment 🤷♀️
@debwell7248 Excellent response, couldn't agree more.
I’m sure you will live through it.
@@debwell7248and it’s actually 1946, not 1942. 😢 It was the last of this fabulous series of films.
The title is Dressed to Kill, by the way.
And the secret code in the UK
Yeah, I have DVD's of all the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films, and I didn't recognize the title. I think _Dressed to Kill_ was the last of these. (Just checked the Wiki of Pedia, and this is correct--DtK was the last of these films.)
Update to all: More from the source that must not be named:
"also known by the alternative titles Prelude to Murder (working title) and Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Code in the United Kingdom"
It is also from 1946. So we have it listed under the UK title with the wrong year attached.
Thank you, Feature Film, for your channel.
Saw this film on broadcast tv several years ago. They interrupted for commercials fewer times than UA-cam and it was during the late broadcasts which were widely put down because they had so many ads. Also, they didn't pop up ID supers all the time. Oh for the old days when tv was better than this self-agrandized channel.
Dressed to Kill is a 1946 American mystery film directed by Roy William Neill. Released by Universal Pictures, it is the last of fourteen films starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson.[1] It is also known by the alternative titles Prelude to Murder (working title) and Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Code in the United Kingdom.
UA-cam ads contain offensive and insulting content. UA-cam posters (and UA-cam) originally did not contain ads. Did all of those people starve to death?????????????????????????????????????
Well said about the ads. Look up the definition of 'Enshittification' - that's what's going on here!
I have watched every single episode many times and I still love them😇😍
I love it ❤😻♥💕💙💖THANK'S

Simply The Best - however Sherlock is a bit harsh on poor old Watson at times ! Patricia Morison was a stunner and passed in 2018 - God bless em all.
I think you have this labeled incorrectly. There was a Secret Code in 1942 but it was with Paul Kelly and Anne Negel. There was no Sherlock Holmes with Basil entitled "The Secret Code."
It was with that title in the UK
Incorrect, my friend. A little homework reveals the truth:
_'Dressed to Kill' is a 1946 American mystery film released by Universal Pictures as the last of fourteen films starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. @@zantas-handle The title in the U.S. is not at all. The poster did not know that the U.S. does NOT recognize such a title. So, this is how it should have been written - *Sherlock Holmes: The Secret Code (UK Title).* A much better title would have been *Sherlock Holmes: The Secret Code (UK); Dressed to Kill (U.S.).* You see how easy that would have been. So enjoy the oldies, better than many of the trash shown on TV or in the movie houses today. Murders, not bloody masacures.
Maurice Mosheim: I stand corrected. The Rathbone/Bruce editions of the Sherlock Holmes movies were indeed produced in the US, at Universal Studios from 1943 to 1946. My face is red, but in fact, I thank you for the correction.
top notch videos!
Loved Basil too!
Imagine making a movie with no swearing, no sex or graphic violence and black-and-white film and it still stands the test of time. This is what films and entertainment is supposed to be.
Well said.
While I think Jeremy Brett was the best Holmes, I love these old ones. I love the sets, the costumes, the diction. It was a different time, a good time.
He was perhaps the closest to Conan Doyle Holmes. But no one had the class and authority of Rathbone...
Till today this movie worth to watch😊
Wrong title for this video. 😥

Absolutely ADORED basil rathbone there has never been and never will be the definitive sherlock holmes , and especially the black and white movies with their clever scripts and no bloody sex scenes which i think is s a form of soft porn designed for the men in the audience and no bad language . I sound like a victorian prude but that's how I feel .
Thank you for uploading these. Always thought Rathbone played the character well, though too lazy to take a few violin lessons. I find Bruce's buffoon, the only character he ever played, bloody tedious.
I don't get it. What is the connection between Dr Samuel Johnson museum and the location of the plates? How did Holmes know where to go at the end?
I can't find most of these clues SH deduces before he reads ua-cam.com/video/PSB2E-VFiHo/v-deo.html
Only at the end does SH mention how he deduced who Dr S is ua-cam.com/video/PSB2E-VFiHo/v-deo.html (so earlier on how did he know S was a doctor)
Another thing as far as locating Dr S, the convict was arrested within 15 min of committing the crime that narrows the search area down considerably.
Sloppy
Sorry, but every time I hear that guy singing in the dive bar, I think of Lestrade, he sounds like him. 😀
Dressed to Kill had me looking for Nancy Allen, at 74, still cutest girl in this world.😊
Thought this was a Rathbone/Bruce i'd not seen. Damn you!
In the garage scene, the gas is described as “used successfully by the Germans to get rid of their undesirables”. This means it was publicly known when the film was released in 1942, or even when the film was made in 1941, that the Nazis were gassing Jews and others in concentration camps. This is not the timing represented in historical accounts of WWII.
BASIL / NIGEL will always be the best characters ... the women used to play the baddies are always BEAUTIFUL , YET CREEPY at the same time
Why didn't that question the prisoners who made the music box?

Sherlock needlessly planting his calling card directly leads to the death of Scotland Yard's Sgt. Thompson
The Empire's ruin rides on 3 musical boxes, the crooks have 2, and Scotland Yard lets Sherlock walk out with the third,
and Holmes entrusts the stumblebum Watson with the box
And along the way, Holmes tells the criminals what he knows.
What sleuthing! What writing!
And the 3rd musical box went to the tight Scot at 143B Hampden Way according to the auctioneer, but Holmes and Watson go to 143B Hampden Road instead!

I never felt, reading the books that Watson was an idiot. But maybe they wanted to change the story a bit.
I have been binging on Sherlock Holmes for the last couple of weeks. lately I have been focusing on Dr. Watson's eyebrows. Are those real or they really just eyebrow toupees?
Dressed to Kill (1946) looking at IMDb?
Correct. The strapline is utter nonsense. None of the 14 Rathbone/Bruce films are entitled Sherlock Holmes: The Secret Code. The 1942 release was Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror. Dressed to Kill, released in 1946, was the last in the series. The code was hidden in the variations of the tune played by the musical boxes.
