In old video performers act their part in a dramatic and exaggerated manner to tell us a story. In today's videos, the "actors" behave in bizzar and unnatural ways trying to convince me that their absurd message is a "reality" with often a huge dose of messaging and woke. Characters do not connect in any natural format to each other. They are fake.
Because they were written that way and then well-directed. It is called making movies. A fine craft that too many people who get paid far too much have forgotten, or have never known in the first place.
@@jimshannononsounds True for the most part. Most actors get more out of a part playing a "Bad Guy" rather than a hero or heroine. You also have to add a level of sophistication that comes from most of the cast having been on the stage as well as the screen for many years. When you have a well-established villain, you have to write them at a certain level, rather than the way it is done today, where you have some ex-football player with one IQ point bouncing between his eardrums. Granting that it isn't Shakespeare, you still need and want a higher level of performance than the audience gets today, which is sad to say.
😮 80 years Later!!! These Movies Still Impressing People! Interesting Storie 😮 And Excellent Performance of "Rathbone & Bruce" The unforgettable Couple!!! 😢😮
7:33 - I always love watching the pageboy when he walks into the room to deliver the message to Penrose! He can't take his eyes off of Rathbone the entire time! He must have been so starstruck!!! Awesome!
I’d never before heard that quote of Churchills’ re Canada; I’m Canadian and watching this in Alberta in 2024, I appreciate that We were included in this episode! Thank-You for uploading!!
We’re talking about an all star Cast. Ian Wolfe, Miles Mander, Kay Harding, Author Hohl, Paul Cavanagh, Gerald Hamer. I can’t begin to imagine what it must’ve been like to be among these icons & watching each of them working their craft.
Kay Harding who played Marie is so gorgeous in this, and I absolutely love her costume! Men's and women's clothes looked so amazing during this period!
Dr Watson did exactly the opposite of inconspicuous. He attracted the whole pub's attention..😂. I must say This film has all Oxford dictionary words with the right idioms and phrases...😂
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the writer of the Sherlock Holmes' series married twice, and his second wife was into the occult. He died in 1931 and his movies were modified and shown through the years 1939-1946 of the second world war. Spirituality and speaking to people who had died became a significant connection between these shows and people who had died in the war. You will notice that Sherlock neither approves nor dismisses the idea of connecting with the Spiritual realm.
Great entertainment over and over like tv reruns😮😂. The Jeremy Brett and also Ron Howard series are equally entertaining . Notice how long the scenes are? Their lines? And in All three series the subtle humour and looks you'll miss the first time around, makes the second time you watch just as fun. Dr Watson and inspector lastrad are hilarious. ❤. Everyone actually involved in the old Sherlock's, are wonderful....
I have about 6 of these films that stand as clear favorites, and this is one of those. But of the 14, the 'worst' is merely 'less interesting' after many rewatchings. I haven't watched the 40-odd Charlie Chans over and over, so I can't claim Basil & Bruce's series is The Best but it is my favorite, if only becasue of their rewatchability.
while i DO love Basil as holmes, i never liked the way they wrote watson's character. he was never a bumbling idiot. at least in this one his medical knowledge was useful. thanks for posting this!
ACD was probably the first writer of his time to write in the modern theme of a detective using logic to solve crimes which is a genre popular to this day.😊
Early films of this kind were modeled after theatre productions, which were modeled after literature....gothic victorian literature like Dickens and Shelley, Bram Stoker....the writers of the day were so superior due to the fact that was the only form of public entertainment besides plays and the circus...it still fires the imagination...
@@flyingtigerline ...of course not: you have "faith" which is by definition as a strong belief in something that cannot be proven (factually) to be true. So, you are saying to believe something is true without proof requires no imagination...when you are LITERALLY "imagining" something as a fact without proof?
@@GathKingLeppbertI lol and how is that any different in MEANING than someone simply Believing in something without any evidence to support it? ...it is not. Perhaps using different works on some fools, but no different words do not make it special, nor magical. Ex: calling a very old book of allegorical stories "the scriptures" does not make it any more relevant nor any more factual no matter how many people would like to think it may be the case.
Sherlock sure IS a genius, as he manages to get SEVEN shots out of a SIX-shooter revolver at about 12mins 20secs. These Rathbone/Bruce films are the funniest things ever. Terrible special effects, pathetic plots and hilarious/corny dialogue. I often wonder if watchers in the 1940's thought these were supposed to be serious. A GREAT watch as always.
I enjoy all of the Sherlock Holmes stories, even those not written by Doyle. And one sure way to make Holmes look brilliant is for Watson to be a bumbling idiot, something Doyle never did.
The innkeeper who hits his daughter ought to have turned out to be the bad guy. This tale is downright unsatisfying when he turns out to be an innocent loving dad by the end. And the judge who's been pretending to be crippled for the last 2 years turns out to be innocent too. Huh? Very unsatisfying. And Holmes doesn't manage to save either Marie or the judge. This tale is all wrong.
He was chill about his wife having just been killed like sheep Cold hearted as hell Must have had a huge life insurance policy on his wife He didn't blink a eye
ABSOLUTELY Loved the way they had Nigel Bruce "speak under-his-breath" after a Holmes barb! @17:45
I watched these with my father in the sixties... He used to imitate Nigel Bruce doing that very thing!!!! Thanx!!!

Today's movies won't stand the test of time like classics like this. Pure gold😊
Brenda, how right you are. I love these old B&W movies, the plots are great and you don't have all the filthy language!!
Until time tests them we’ll never know. 😀
Not so far Beetlejuice 2 may have chance
Elementary my dear Brenda😊

Watching these old Sherlock Holmes movies is an escape to another time and place.
When films were basically plays that were filmed. Love them so much.
Fantastic!
My mom loved these Sherlock Holmes movies. So do I.
I love theses sherlock homes
My favorite Sherlock and Dr Watson, that era was so cool, even the criminals were well spoken and respectful

@@rocistone6570 It's more then that. These "crimminal characters" put their own personality into the chracter to bring them to life.

The 14 are gems. Not like most of the old English slow n boring flix. Correcto Mundo pam.
No Sherlock for me but Basil Rathbone! No one comes close!
@@elizabethmeszaros704 Agreed!

Born 1960 I only knew of Rathbone and Bruce as Sherlock and Watson. Brett is incredible as Sherlock. Love all things Sherlock Holmes.
I never enjoyed Brett
This wasnt one of his main moves. I love it. So thrilled to watch Sherlock and Watson.
Fantastic and timeless movie
Thanks 🙏
Luv Rathbone & Nigel ❤
The best duo ever for Holmes and Watson Alice 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Amazing - I just love the self muttering Watson does to himself throughout the episode.
A classic from the modernized series! Atmospheric, intriguing and entertaining.

Still the perfect Holmes & Watson for me
(though love Jeremy Brett and also)

Jeremy Brett was IMO the best Holmes of all. 😊
My favourite. Good story and atmospheric
I absolutely love these old Sherlock Holmes films with Basil Rathbone. Many people have tried, but for me Basil was the best Sherlock Holmes ever.

I agree with you. Holmes would never have a partner so dim witted and bumbling. It would be like Einstein having Curly Howard as a sidekick.
I agree that Watson was never written as an idiot but with Rathbone I think he's wonderful comic relief played as he is.
One hundred percent agree!!
These movies are 80 years of awesomeness...

That newspaper was on the ball!
Watson is cute , he’s always mumbling, answering to Holmes.
That ending is real justice.
