Wow! Someone finally uploaded a Sherlock Holmes movie and didn't cut off the sides of the picture! Thank you very much!
The film was shot in 1.37 to 1 (Academy) ratio, but TV screens are much wider. Simply stretching the image horizontally to fill the screen horizontally and vertically distorts everything in a distracting way.
But the picture is strechet
This is displayed in 16.9 instead of the proper 4.3 because many people don't know that films before about 1950 were not wide screen.
Love these old Holmes mysteries--TY
Rathbone is THE definitive Holmes: I saw some clip on UA-cam where Conan Doyle was being interviewed and called Watson [something along the lines of] a rather stupid friend. Most unjust, but then Watson was his creation. Be that as it may, Nigel Bruce gives a warm avuncular performance. A very enjoyable film.
I always thought of Nigel Bruce's Watson as a charming, amusing fellow with the courage of a lion.
unfortunately, the basil rathbone holmes movies were poor adaptations of the original stories. the movies were conglomerations of different stories, loosely based, and wildly out of temporal accuracy. IMO, the best holmes was jeremy brett in the granada TV series of the 80s. the TV adaptations were true to the doyle stories, and the writing, acting, and historical accuracy were outstanding.
This is my favorite Holmes episode. Rathbone, here, absolutely conquers his greatest role! This 1942 episode is positively brilliant!! (Would've been nice to have a Churchill quick stand-in scene at 50:28.) And Holmes' final remark, as always, is profound. Thanks for posting. Take a look.
The idea of resuscitating Sherlock Holmes as a hero to fight Nazis was absolute, pure genius, and Basil Rathbone rose to the occasion by delivering a sterling performance. I know that Nigel Bruce's Watson was far from the original portrayal, but it added a note of comic relief in desperate times. These films really were masterpieces and served the war effort well.
I don't agree at all. It might have been an original thing or a moral necessity back in that time, but watching it now, it seems really a demented and unnatural as well as instrumental forcing. Beside offering a dead-boring episode, since nothing of the kind ever went on at the time. There is no chance that Victorian era and the contradictory but fascinating world it produced, could be transferred so many years after. Without nothing detracting from the actor play, which is always fantastic.
@@michelemarcolin2548 If an era of Victorian transcription can not exist, watch Dead Poets Society with the great Robin Williams. I loved all these movies and I don't think Sir Arthur would be offended at all. I do understand what you are saying
Just think of it as good fan fiction, if it makes it easier. I will take Sherlock in almost any form
Nothing more than propaganda.

I've probably seen all of these Basil Rathbone Sherlocks several times. Too bad they didn't make more of them.
I have watched all the Rathbone-Bruce films and have a hard time watching any other ones. Basil is best!
Can't get enough of the old classics

I can't accept that there's only one actor who ever played Holmes to a T. I've watched as many of Jeremy Brett's portrayals as I can find, but Basil Rathbone is a delight to watch. Rathbone did a radio presentation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, playing Scrooge, and I must listen to it every Christmas.
My favourite and most people's Scrooge was Alastair Sim.

They were and are, the quintessential cinema Holmes and Watson. The late Jeremy Brett was equally fine in the UK Granada TV series, but for my money, Basil and Nigel nailed it perfectly.
So glad you uploaded this.
It's obvious that you have never read any of the Sherlock Holmes novels or novellas by Conan Doyle or you would not have praised the portrayal of Watson as "quintessential". Hollywood reduced Watson to a moronic, inept, bumbling cartoon character unlike the resourceful, competent character that Conan Doyle created. Shill!

I had Relatives in Germany during WWII, but I really appreciate these Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson episodes. Some Germans (in the top leadership & SS & Gestapo) were so unbelievably cruel...it does me good to see them displayed in such negative light.
I only wish that we in America had a Program to publically show the courage our Soldiers, etc. displayed during the War...especially for the sake of those who never got to come back home to the U.S.. so many of them made that one-way trip when they were so young!!!
wow! hate much??!! maybe one day you'll learn the truth....
Wow! And what truth may that be?!
@@promenadeable which truth?!
The American forces were a part of the Allied effort, including countries far from England such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Together they rid the world of a tyrannical evil, and as such, they will always be thought of with respect and gratitude.
A film that looks at three American servicemen returning from the war stars Fredrick March and Myrna Loy. I think it is called The Days of our Lives. It is a very moving film that gently but powerfully honours three American men who must readjust to their lives after returning from active service.
I hope this film is still up.
The TRUTH?? Pray, what do you mean, MAGA?@@promenadeable
Many Sherlock Holmes purist hate this film because Holmes & Watson are transported from Victorian England to England of the 1940s. Our heroes are not pitted against the master crimminal Moriarty but against the Nazis. I personally have no problem with this time shift because the state of the world was in at the time. I admit that I prefer Holmes & Watson solving crimes set in the Victorian time frame but this film has much to offer. Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce are in top form . Evelyn Ankers is excellent as Kitty, a young woman who assists our heroes to hunt down the Nazis. Thomas Gomez & Reginald Denny are also excellent. The film moves along at quick & suspenseful pace. The screenplay was created to keep the morale of it's viewers high during the tense times that was WWII.
Rathbone was against the contemporary settings. He wanted to keep Doyle's stories rooted in Victorian times, but was overruled by the studios.

I really enjoy these old Sherlock Holmes movies, especially with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce at the helm.
"The Voice of Terror". In 1942, after a three-year break from the movies, which were spent on the radio, Rathbone & Bruce, the greatest Holmes/Watson of this or any other generation, returned to fight Nazis and fifth columnists in London. The ending was also the beginning of something: Rathbone ended the movie with a quote from Conan Doyle's "His Last Bow". When audience after audience stood and cheered, some even sobbing, Universal knew they had a magic formula on their hands, and ended the next few Holmes films with similar endings.....
Great info. Thanks, LandondeeL. Believe Rathbone-Bruce my favorite youtube movies. Also like Hutton-Chaykin Nero Wolfe, Werner Oland Charlie Chan.
I would have stood and cheered too, and I'm American!
Fascinating. I hadn't been paying attention to the chronology to this point. So the enthusiasm for Basil Rathbone's and Nigel Bruce's Holmes & Watson really took off after a three-year break? Fascinating, as I'd mentioned at the outset. The charm of their movies together is incalculable.
"There's an east wind coming all the same. Such a wind has never blew on England yet. It will be cold and bitter, Watson. And a good many of us may wither before its blast. But its God's own wind nonetheless and a greener, better, stronger land that will lie in the sunshine when the storm was cleared. "

Based on Lord Haw-Haw, a US born British man named William Joyce who broadcast Nazi propaganda to the UK from Germany.
And the introduction of the actor Henry Daniell, who for me, was the quintessential Moriarty (which he played in several Rathbone films).
William Joyce was Irish not British!"

I think you're confusing him with James Joyce possibly?

The best of the lot. The series started out with great potential.
This was filmed in the early summer of 1942 in Universal Studios in California, and was released in September 1942.

What
some people complain about the Dr Watson's involvement with Sherlock Holmes I found him to be a perfect counterpoint too Sherlock Holmes Holmes is the intellectual and Watson for better or worse was the comedy relief as it were so I found them the unique combination
I begin to cringe at Watsons shortcomings but I end up loving his regular man approach.

All the old wind bags that should have taken a bullet survived! But Poor little Kitty takes one for the team! No justice in that!

Camberwell: "I ought to be shot."
Holmes: "Perhaps someday you will be."
I like Basil Rathbone a lot as Holmes. He’s as good as Jeremy Brett, perhaps better, they’re just different filming eras. Some of the action, drama, and violence of these older ones are really great, they surpass the Granada ones.
My favourite Sherlock Holmes is Jeremy Brett. I believe that series is more faithful to Conan-Doyle's versions. Jeremy Brett was a hero of mine, not only for his multidimensional portrayal of Holmes, but also the fact that he overcame a serious stutter in his speech. He was very brave regarding his serious heart issues as well, towards the end of the series.
The Basil Rathbone films were rather novel due to the anachronisms that pop up frequently. Also, sometimes the action is taking place in England, and sometimes, in America.
I find it amusing to watch, at any rate!

The lighting and shadows are reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's style

Rathbone and Bruce were magic together! Two of Hollywood's finest actors! 👏
The only sour note in this film is Thomas Gomez in that Nazi uniform. Just comical, without trying to be funny! 🤣
The actual voice of the Voice of Terror was film and radio actor Edgar Barrier(uncredied). He was a member of Orsen Wells Mercury Theater of the Air and featured in many radio mystery/thrillers of the 40s and 50s. As well as many film roles. 👏

Yes! I was waiting for him to be exposed as Moriarty in this Movie. Ha Ha. I have noticed that other actors have played different charactors in these movies also.
Sgt. G; thank you for your reply. I thought the Jeremy Brett shows were very well done also, but I always though the arrogance level he portrayed for the Holmes character was a bit too much. I think Rathbones was appropriately more subtle.

Awesome
The Rathbone/Bruce combo was enjoyable, but Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke set THE standard of the pair as Conan Doyle intended. Rathbone may have been able to match Brett had he been given the Granada series' scripts and production, but Bruce could never have touched Hardwicke's Watson. Just two totally different approaches. Bruce was a comic actor in this series, playing the buffoon - which is not the "real" Watson. Don't get me wrong, I love the Rathbone/Bruce series, but I put them in the same category as the more modern Cumberbatch/Freeman series - entertaining, but not the canonical pair.
Wrong. Doyle did not intend for Holmes to be an arrogant slob and jerk and maybe gay.
@@Gungadin0112 Clearly, you have never actually read anything from the Doyle/Holmes canon. And where did the gay thing come from?
Spoiler Alert: this is a rerun. I've seen it before. The British accents were fairly authentic be as were the periodic clothing. Fun wholesome plot. Good film. Teaches Nazis what a mistake it was to bomb Pearl Harbor.
