It’s a fun game. No it doesn’t reinvent the genre, yes it’s a cash grab. But it’s fun - and sometimes that’s enough.

Do you really think that it was a cash grab? I think that it was a pretty solid game with quite a bit of effort put into it. I don't see why it is regarded as a cheap cash grab.
If was a crash grab they would made it using recycled you don’t take time and the money to make brand assets for a simple cash grab. I don’t think you even know what one is.
It's actually a very good fighting game. I'd much rather have had Revenge of Death Adder on Saturn but this was still a good fighting game.
Shame this didn't do well, I think the art style looks great for that period.

At first, I was confused to see Golden Axe. "Isn't today supposed to be fighting game Thursday?" I thought. Then I realized that this IS a fighting game! And then I thought to myself "GOLDEN AXE HAD A FIGHTING GAME?!"
This really was the Final Fight Revenge of the Golden Axe franchise, I'm honestly surprised Streets of Rage didn't get it's own tournament fighter
Actually, that was a blessing in disguise. Also if this game takes place 80 years after revenge of death adder, what is golden axe 3's (the 3rd genesis game) place in the Golden Axe timeline?

@@almostliterally593 I don't mean it in terms of quality, I mean it in that the games have a lot of interesting similarities. They're both fighting games based on famous beat em ups that missed out a lot of popular characters from the source material, had the main villain come back from the dead as an arcade mode boss and both are often considered some of the weakest games in the series, although Duel is considered disappointing whereas Revenge is just bad.
What so interesting about the og characters of golden axe that it would be for them to be in the game instead of new characters?

Personally I loved this game. I found it extremely fun and entertaining. Plus the whole GOLDEN AXE is evil twist really wowed me as a longtime Golden Axe fan & fighting gamer!

Most of the characters Golden Axe Duel were descendants and grandchildren of Axe Battler and such. Death Adder was revived my dark sorcerory and was after his beloved Axe. What made players interested in Golden Axe Duel, was the market didn't have alot of weapon based fighting games( Samurai Showdown) and unique character designs ( like DarkStalkers). Its a sad shame it didn't do well, but was a unique attempt.
I mean the concept of going head to head with another player was there from the start. "The Duel" used to be an included mode where you could either take on your friend or a gauntlet of NPC battles.
This game looks gorgeous even for 2021...this game looks like it was very well made. This is my first time seeing this game and I'm impressed.
A pity Golden Axe: The Duel didn't stand out in the crowded fight game genre.

Mega struggle not laughing at the "YEEEAAAAAAHHHH" syncing up with the boob zoom. My kid is doing his school work in here, dude!! :P
One thing I noticed with this game was when attacks were blocked the characters weapons would shine or flash as if the game originally had a weapon breaking aspect to it (this does actually happen with Death Adders shield breaking) I think they would have all had unarmed attacks but it was dropped for one reason or another.
Also Milan Flare ... best Sega girl, I'd love to see her return

Man I absolutely loved this game back in the day. I need to get hold of this again for my recently acquired Saturn.
I think it's the first time I disagree with the man I guess. I remember having good fun with it, and back then, let's be honest, expectations on the franchise were not huge. Also the availability of 2d fighters in the west for Saturn was not huge either.

I first saw this game when i was 21. I was like meh but now looking at it again i think i like to try it out (If i one day get a more powerful PC). I personally dont really see too much issue with this entry (Even tho the reasons were stated i still fail to let this bother me). Maybe its my open mind to this kind of thing. But the only criticism i heard from people nowadays about this game is that the damage output seems Super Street Fighter 2-ish. Very high damage. (I guess thats why this is looked at as a Samurai Shodown clone as well). But i do agree that this game could have been handled better since they could have ported Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder to Saturn. Could even be a two in one package deal. I will say I do like how the characters look too and the idea of making it take place years after the classic Golden Axe days. It honestly seems better handled then how Namco handled the fighters in SoulCalibur 5 where only Z.W.E.I, Viola (Technically), and Natsu (Despite being a female Naruto with Taki's moveset) are the only characters who i found very likable or interesting. All the other newcomers were either detestable (Patrokolas and Pyrrha) or forgettable.
Golden Axe: The Duel wasn't great, but it was pretty good. Nice graphics, well-animated, well themed. I would've preferred a port of Revenge of Death Adder to the Saturn, or better yet, an original game in the vein of Guardian Heroes, but this is what we got. I still think Golden Axe III is the weakest game in the series overall.

Only complaint I have is the motions for some of the supers. Liked how you'd hit the thieves for magic bottles to build the super bar.

The new characters look neat, its too bad we'll never see another installation of Golden Axe cause of Beast Rider. It's still one of my favorite sega games I remember playing the first one on Sega Genesis as a kid, I had no idea what I was doing but I loved it nontheless.
Try Dragon's crown. It's close enough.
I don't think Beast Rider is as bad as people chalked it up to be, just nothing spectacular... and certainly not a traditional Golden Axe experience. I would have preferred they took a Que from PSO and did split screen/ online multiplayer for a 3D beat em up. It didn't tick enough boxes to give a Golden Axe fan the type of experience they longed for.
@@millgiass True as I did like Beast Rider. Plus there has been talk that due to the success of Wonder Boy in the Dragon's Trap, and Streets of Rage 4 we may possibly get a true Golden Axe 4 in the future.

How great would it be if it was originally a beat em up with these graphics, then at the end of every stage it turned into a boss fight fighting game.
This game (on Sega Saturn) was surprisingly good. It played a lot like Samurai Showdown. Heavy slash damage, nice scaling effects and detailed sprites. Music sounded like 16-bit Genesis hardware, but otherwise definitely a fun and overlooked game.
This game had such fun animations and beautiful backgrounds. A lot of it reminds me of the style of the Darkstalkers series.
I think you are too hard on this game. I've never played it, but I thought it was interesting. I felt that it expanded the world, and it was interesting to see new and different magic types. I think the greatest tragedy of this game is that nothing was brought back into new games. While I admit that these characters are not the classic stars everyone loves, I feel that their stories had potential. For example, Zoma could have joined forces with Death Adder, and then betrayed him to take over, becoming the game's final boss, until Death Adder revealed that he suspected him and planned accordingly leading to one more battle against Death Adder. Love to hear your thoughts on this.
picked it up at a car boot sale a few years ago, it was missing the manual so i got it dirt cheap (£6 i think) it's a fun fighting game for what it is and i'm glad i bought it
There was a decent fighter on the TAito Type X arcade board that reminded me of Golden Axe as it was a medieval fighter. I just played it on an emulator, but it was kinda interesting as it had an item system.

Honestly, this is probably an epic title that gets overlooked. AFAIK there aren't many SS-like fighters out there. And Golden Axe contributing towards those style of fighters makes sense and I think works wonders because of it.
I don’t think it’d be a problem for a beat’em up title to have a fighting game spin off. Honestly the two genres have a lot in common and can share assets with each other.
Several Final Fight characters are in Street Fighter so Golden Axe having a fighting game franchise sounds pretty cool.
I think of Golden Axe: The Duel as the duel mode for The Revenge of Death Adder despite having different characters. It's as if Sega took the duel mode, like we see in the 16-bit titles, and separated it out to make its own game for the 32-bit generation, almost like a stand-alone expansion to Revenge of Death Adder.
Edit: If Sega ever releases The Revenge of Death Adder on consoles, Golden Axe: The Duel should come with it.

that I've always had about it since I first played it.....

I always wondered that myself, my best guess at the time was that maybe it was cut from the arcade version. Way back in the day I think I saw a picture that was on the back of one of the box arts or in promotional material. Mind you, this was a long time ago so my memory is foggy, I believe it was supposed to be a night stage.

I actually love how this game looks, but it's pretty hard to getting run well in emulators
If I was born in the 90s, I wouldn't mind this game. However, I know everyone probably wanted Death Adder to come to the Saturn the most.
As a fan of both this game and Samurai Shodown, GATD's only similarity to SS is the fact that the fighters use weapons. SS and SS2 had two of the most unique even to this day, combo systems that you had to time and distance heavy hits properly if you want to land a multi hit combo (of which were quite limited thankfully since fierce slash hits take so much damage!)
I kind of believe that the underlying mechanics engine for GATD was Sega's own Eternal Champions with some tweaks as combos in that game were very hard to come by as well. As it stands, I did very much enjoy GATD for its artwork and fun new characters (I didn't mind the new roster in the excellent Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder so why would I mind that here?)
As for what would a Golden Axe sidescrolling beat-em-up been like on the Sega Saturn (since they decided to not bless us with GATRODA?), I like to look no further than Guardian Heroes for the answer to that.
...and it's a shame it's not going to be in Sega's Astro City mini. Now none of the games utilize all 6 buttons.
While I had some fun with it, The Duel was a pretty vanilla fighter even by the time period. I own it for the sheer novelty.

I didn't even know this existed. It actually looks quite good. Some of the features like the collection of potions was probably ahead of it's time - I think it's a good gameplay mechanic TBH.
This game would have been better received if it was chronologically set just a few years after Revenge of Death Adder, and a few characters were renamed to match the OGs from Golden Axe 1. I love Milan, but she could have easily just been Tyris herself rather than a descendant. There's no need for that. Same for Gillius. And why not just call Kain, Ax Battler if you're going to make them so similar?
I wouldn’t compare Death Adder to Dracula so much as he seems to be more directly inspired by Sauron from Lord of the Rings which as you said was a major inspiration overall for the franchise; this seemingly immortal dark lord wherein “death” was little more than a temporary set back.
Just because it was not original and didn't innovate it didn't mean that the game was bad, on contrary, it was a great 2D fighting game, it's only real drawback was that it had a small fighter rooster for it's time.

I didn't play this one until emulation. I think I would have enjoyed it when I was younger. At least visually I think this game looks beautiful. If people are willing to go back and play Mortal Kombat 1 then I don't think retro gamers care too much about if it was revolutionary at the time. Know what I mean? Retro gamers value different things than gamers at the time did. It's laughable looking back at the polygons we thought were so beautiful.

Eh, if they had made another beat-em-up it'd just be one more in the list of "Awesome mid 90's game nobody cared about at the time but gained a cult following 20 years later when the franchise was dead and buried" beus like Violent Storm, Battle Circuit and Gaia Crusaders.

The ONLY negative for this game is the roster.

I love this game it’s so fun playing as death adder the big negative is the supers are impossible to pull off hate when game developers try to reinvent the wheel just make its double fireball motion.
Even if it didn't succeed, I don't mind if this ended up on the Astro City Mini to make up for the 6-button game entry.
Never played The Duel. Neat concept. And the animation looked well done. Bummer it was the last entry for awhile.
Interesting idea to move the series towards the next generation. Very rarely would a series take a chance and branch off so far from main characters. (Phantasy Star.. wait they couldn't be in the same universe)

Never played it. But it's at the top of my list to get. I love the art style.
I don't like fighting games, but I do like Tekken, MK123 that's it, sort of Street Fighter, and Killer Instinct. The rest out there that claims to be fighters I don't even care for. I don't know I just can't get into it. Now with this Golden Axe fighter. I just feel that it not a fighter in my eyes. I just can't give it a chance at all.
I'm happy today though. I thought today I would have to wait till 8pm to get my package, but low, and behold it arrived early in the middle of the day. I was able to install it right away, but before I did that I had to oil it up. Since I had to take my main equipment apart I might as well oil all of it. It was freaking easy, and it should last longer. Racking the equipment is like no other, and seeing the round enter the chamber is smooth. I'm so glad that I order this enhancement for my equipment. I know I griped in the beginning on how I had to wait a whole month just to get it to the company I bought it from which I shouldn't, but they did follow up on the product, and it was really good quality. I'm just that type that can't wait when I purchase an item online. I know I could just pay more for the delivery, but I just don't feel like I have to. Since the product is really good in quality. I want to get it for my next equipment that I will save up for. The one that I want now is the G41 model. I will get the product upgrade for that one next time. I just can't wait! In about an hour I have to go to the clinic, and get test for the woo flu. My job require me to do so, and I don't really mind. I'm not paying for it. I just don't want to go there all because there's so many sick people in there. I heard something that was funny. I heard there was a person that was not sick had to go to the hospital to take a test, and the next day that person got sick. I hope that won't happen to me today. I'm sure to take proper procedure to not get infected. Wash my hand in out of that place. Stay away from all that is sick, and don't touch anything.
I purchased this game back in the days when I owned the Saturn. To be honest the game did not reinvent wheel, was classic vs fighting game, did not added anything innovative but the graphics and sound was well done and the game was fun to play.I guess Sega tried to grab some cash due to the popularity of the genre in the 90s and Golden Axe was an obvious choice because the franchise was quite well know in the arcade and at home. Overall good game and I had a lot of fun with it.
A fighting game set in a fantasy world looks interesting enough to me. If I still had a saturn I would buy this game
IT was NOT a bad game at all.. and not even a cash grabber. It was a good try in the one on one beat em up genre.. only the music was disappointing.. the rest was far better than many other titles of that time and it really had good graphics and decent atmosphere and gameplay!

I actually liked Golden Axe the Duel. I always thought Jamm was cute but I was disappointed that Milan wasn't Tyris. Also, Gilius Rockhead is actually in Golden Axe 2 on Genesis, so that guy is old A.F.
One thing though, I remember the game running WAAAAAY slower and more sluggishly than what you're displaying here. Like I'm talking 1/2 to 1/3rd the speed. It felt like it had an extra layer of difficulty in control because of that.
I've got to say though the character sprites are fairly attractive. I actually wouldn't mind seeing this game redone with 60fps gameplay and more refinement in the flow. Maybe some vector based sprite work so the scaling is lossless.
Please make a video on another Sega exclusive fighting games called Eternal Champions or Rise of The Robots.
Never played this game, but I'm generally up for a fighting game version of any beat'em up. Or, at least I would be if they didn't seem prone to less than stellar results.

It's like cosmic carnage or eternal champions....you can win them all (until you can't) but sega may have swooped in on the beat'em up market with Golden Axe and streets of rage, but they failed in 2D fighters....they came back with 3D fighters, kinda

Yeah, this game always interested me, but I can see how it failed by being too many things to too many people. You had half-assed attempts at being "Golden Axe" (potions, similar characters) while not going all in, so it looked mostly like Anime-Style modern characters (ex: Jamm is an obvious riff on Shodown's Cham-Cham; Milan is a Generic Anime Waifu compared to the Red Sonja-like Tyris; the troll looks nothing like any GA character, and the armored guy only looks sorta like the Ogres of the first game).
It didn't look flashy enough to compete with the gigantic characters of Capcom's newer games, and wasn't "Golden Axe" enough to satisfy the dwindling fanbase of those games, either. They should have at least featured a character riding one of the game's iconic monsters. Thanks for the video- I like how you go into a lot of detail as to the mechanics, which helps point out the few unique bits.
I like the game, I think it looks great for a game of that era and is very fun to play. The problem it has is that, if you have a Saturn and are looking to get a 2D fighting game to play on it, there are a lot of far better (and cheaper) games to choose from. It's definitely worth playing but only as a curiosity if you really like the genre and have already played all the other amazing 2D fighting games on the system that are better.

The game wasn't that bad. The only thing that bugged me was "Why is Tyris's descendent lead heroine Milan Flare using aerokinetic attacks, instead of the pyrokinetic attacks her famed ancestor was known for using?"

I used to own this game it was one of sega saturn best fighting games. If you look at Virtua Fighter 2 or any other 3d fighting game for the 32 era block animation sluggish movement. 3d for 32 bit system look and played bad all together. N64 had the best 3d models with a WWE games zelda games. Golden axe the duo great game Eternal champions for the Sega CD great games

So strange that Sega was willing to green light this, but opposed and canceled the third Eternal Champions game for Sega Saturn. Golden Axe the Duel looks competent, but looks too close to Samurai Showdown.
