The arcade game came out the year my wife and I got married. We discovered the game on our honeymoon and played it together- her taking the Dwarf and I the girl (she had the best magic). Thirty years later we still play from time to time. A girl that will play Golden Axe with you on your honeymoon is a keeper.
Cool man, specially in the late 80's, when women who enjoyed playing videogames were a much rare ocurrence compared to today.
💯
Great Story Tim! I hope you're still happy.
*Nothing like the 80's (late 80's-90's) EVERYTHING!* When Life was Grand..
For just about everybody.
I was A kid in High school At almost the perfect age (If I had been born in the 70's I'd A had even more Great memories). That time period; Mall Arcades! Butterfly Knives! Kung-Fu Tuesday Night TV! No Cell phones! Big roomy cars! No Fake media pushed Psy-ops! & Toy Stores! Comics & Comic shops were mainly better & there was more of them. Smoking everything (HaHa!) I could get my hands on, at the Fun Center & bowling Alley. An Nobody Cared! It was Alot like the _Lost Boys_ movie (Without Vampires obviously). _License to Drive,_ Beverly Hills Cop ll, _Legends of Billy Jean._ All them movies really captured the better old world.
It really was the Best Era! Even Women, "Girls" were more adventurous. An Not all social media distracted. Even DOMINOS Pizza tasted better back than.
Man....
This game needs to be next in line to get the Streets of rage 4 treatment!
Absolutely
Golden Axe on the Genesis is a masterpiece. I feel that games like it and Altered Beast did a lot more to give Sega's new console credibility than any antagonistic advertising campaign ever could.
Controversial statement-I like Golden Axe 3 the best simply because of the Cat man
@@greenkoopa Golden Axe 3 isn't a bad game at all.
@@SomeOrangeCat ok I won't say it's bad, but you cannot argue the home console version is at the very least unpolished. I have the xbox 360 genesis collection and it would seem they didn't bother to fix the hit boxes, which always felt lazy to me
@@SomeOrangeCat I use the cat man because his hit box is broken 🤣
@@greenkoopa Unpolished sure, but I did enjoy it.
Me and my brother used to play this all the time for the Genesis , What a classic brawler
Those skeletons were tough enemies....
Just discovered your channel and I am very much enjoying your show so much. Thank you for your time making them.
I first played this along with Streets of Rage on an official compilation cart called 6-Pack that I was gifted with my Genesis 3 circa 2003!
The Sonic game on the 6-pak was trash but I liked most of the others on it. My mom likes Columns to this day 😒
Theta Sakana columns is awesome! I emulate the mega drive version :p
Yep same with me, my cousin who also had a sega has that 6-pack cartridge so I would go to his house all the time to play streets of rage and golden axe since I already had sonic on mine.
Original player here. Thank you very much for supplying the history of such a great game. Great work mate :)
One of the first games I ever played. Man, I still can't forget any of the details even after all these years: the music, the stages, kicking the sprites, riding goddamn dragons.
My buddy and I were those guys who put a ton of money in the machine when it was in the arcades. It really was a big deal when they finally brought it home, I was 15 or 16 at the time, and it was an amazing port for its time, such a big step up from what was around at the time. I remember how surprised we were, when the game continued where the arcade version ended...good times
Wow... I was literally just playing this game for the first time ever when this notification showed up.
Seriously.. Deja vu
I grew up with Genesis version but still haven't tried the arcade.
@@Lightblue2222 the arcade is the way forward far better then the megadrive version
I don't think deja vu means what you think it does.
@@dfjsorbys awesome. I figured so, since home ports were usually cut back from the arcade. Look foward to trying it!
Synchronicity
I’m subscribed to a lot of gaming channels (many of the usual suspects), but I have to say that many of the videos on this channel are quite exceptional. The obvious wealth of research - and editing in order to bring that research to life onscreen - must be a staggering task. It’s certainly not missed by the audience. I’d honestly say this channel puts most others to same in terms of capturing nostalgia, gaming trivia, editing all the different gaming footage. That’s before you even mention the clear commentary which despite all the info, still retains a sense of fun to go alongside many of these much loved franchises. Excellent work - I hope your channel continues to grow and find the volume of audience it truly deserves!! 👍 👍
Golden Axe is one of the few games I had a chance to play at the arcade and I was ECSTATIC to learn it was ported to the Genesis. One of the greatest beat ‘em ups.
You’re channel is one of the ones I wait videos for. Thanks
Born 1980, and I could go for a credit of Golden Axe right now.
Oh man....sooooo much wasted pocket money on that dang machine.....
To this day it still seems odd to me that the guy named Ax fights using a broadsword....always loved Tyris though, she's who I play as every time :)
I got Golden Axe in 1989 when it was first released for Christmas along with Altered Beast and Thunderblade pack ins for the Sega Genesis.
Oh Golden Axe. A life time of love for this game. My first experience was on the Sega Genesis with the Genesis 6 pack. Also my first experience with Streets of Rage. Now, my boys have an awesome love of this game. We play this series all the time. Fun, bonding and ass kicking. Gives me some of those happy father moments.
👍
Imagine how many players were introduced to the fantasy genre through golden axe.
Can't say enough how much I'm enjoying this series
Top Hat, the rate you turn out these well-produced videos is nothing short of impressive. Keep doing what you're doing because you're doing it right.
Johnnie Nguyen Agree, certainly does more interesting content then 90%+ of the other gaming channels out there.
Always loved the deliberate stop motion look of the skeletons. Also, I remember spending a total of $3 to beat the game the first time.
I was probably 6 years old when I first played golden axe. The game felt like playing a full arcade game truly at home at the time. It was instrumental in me falling in love with the beat em up genre as well as dark fantasy!
i hope you won't forget about best golden axe game ever made: arcade only 'golden axe the revenge of death adder' yeaaaaaaah ;)
nitefiend this^^ that game is so sick and it seems fairly unknown to most ppl. I burned so many quarters as a kid on golden axe in general, but especially on revenge of death adder! I wish they would port it to a system! Or at least on digital download
@@drzakillabee Give all the magic bottle to the small kid, his recover magic big help
I'm sure I have that as a rom 😊
That game was, and still is..awesome! :) :)
Golden Axe is an excellent sidescroller and still brings the awe of the inspired Frazetta& Conan fantasies! Gorgeous gameplay and lore, its still a game I wish would get a proper remake- then quickly realize there's no beating the original!
Sega please make Golden Axe IV already!👍👍
Not happen in the near future
I think they did. Wasn’t it for PS3? It was fantastically bland looking at the UA-cam clips.
Look for a game called Dragon's Crown , it was made by a company called Vanillaware, it gets a lot of inspiration of Golden Axe
Top Hat Gaming Man has just become Top Hat Fighting Man. I can't believe you're going nuts on fighting games and beat 'em ups.
Good job! 😊👍💖
Golden Axe, what a classic!
The eagle has a straight up bald patch that runs from its tail to its head. Damn those Skeleton nits.
My next neighbor across the street growing up had a Sega genesis before we did and golden axe was one of the first games they had, we used to play it regularly. I enjoyed it so much as a kid that I just recently bought a real arcade PCB of the game a few weeks ago. The game is so simple to play my wife even plays with me sometime and she enjoys it as well.
11:50 OK, that SID adaptation of the soundtrack is glorious.
I remember my first version I played was the c64 one it was terrible ages to load and you had to rewind ⏪ the tape back every time you lost at the game to be able to play the game again
And it would get to 84% then crash then have to reload lol
On of my absolute favorite games as a kid. I spent ALOT of my parents quarters on this arcade. First game I've gotten into on the Genesis Mini and my wife and I finally beat it last night together. AWESOME
One of my favorite sega games. Loved this game back in the day
I still play this game and played it on my Switch from start to finish, while watching this video! It brought back memories and made me appreciate this even more! Hope for a Sega Ages release of the arcade game and revenge of Death Adder on the Switch as well!
I got the Amiga 500 version on Christmas Day, played it for months with my dad, awesome music by David Whittaker, music and sound effect AT THE SAME TIME, one floppy disk, 2player coop, honestly not a lot missing and very close in quality to the Megadrive. Very small loading, works well with a joystick and one button, magic spells on the keyboard, it is honestly an Amiga classic. I wished all arcade ports were as good as this.
I remember the day I got this for Sega Genesis, after being enchanted by it in the arcade. I was way behind on my homework. My mom made me do all the back homework before I could play it. The neighbor kid came over, and I got to watch he and my brother BEAT the game about 5 times in a row while I trudged through my homework. Amazingly, I was no less anxious to play the game after having seen it beaten several times. Back in my day, why... we had just a handful of games and you had the privilege of beating them over and over and over again, dozens and dozens of times.
The series was pretty fun to play with local co-op.
Was the only kind of Co-op! Lol.
You mean 2 player lol
I remember playing the arcade version at Vallejo, California mega mall. Challenging, but amazing in every stage. And played as Tyris, to see how varied her powers & agility compared to other characters. Surprisingly, she was equal to Ax Battler, & Gillius Thunderhead. I later played Golden Axe on a friends Genesis. Holy cow. From start to finish, a fun rollercoaster ride.
Oh wow, my favourite game!!!! I was pissed off that Sega didn't do a "3D" version of this game on any of their 3 Sega 3D Classics collections.....
That OST is part of my DNA now. I believe it is part of what made me grow up to love 8 bit and 16 bit music. It gives me such a good feeling to listen to. I'm honestly struggling to focus on the words being sucked into the background music
I used to play this game every time I saw it.
This game is easily the first 5 years of my life before education
Love the development details. That’s the good stuff 👍
Very interesting. Also, when certain baddies die in Golden Axe you can clearly hear they sampled the scream of Thorgrim when he’s killed in Conan The Barbarian.
I used to always look forward to visits to my Grannies house. Not for the visit but because we always stopped at a pub alone the way with this arcade game in the corner. Ahh simpler times.
Im playing Golden Axe almost every day :D Bought it for SEGA classics on Steam. One of my most favourite games from childhood.
Loved the game back in the day in the arcades and Yes I probably spent at least one thousand quarters
ah my favorite video game series, really wish they'd reboot it
I was a huge fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger swinging a sword around.... my friends and I pretended Golden Axe was a sequel to Conan. Kinda sad... when Golden Axe was released, Arnold never did another movie as a medieval warrior again.
I remember this from the arcade days, what a great game.
I first played it in the arcade, and being a big fan of the Conan movie I loved it! I then played the Genesis version at a friend's house and we had a blast!
Why do all of your videos titles have "?!" at the end? Your content is good enough with the borderline clickbaity title. Just a thought.
Regardless of that, I love your content! Keep it up.
They named death adder after me, true story
One of my favorites from my childhood.
Such fun. Such fond memories
How do you get to death bringer? I can’t find a walkthrough for it anywhere
Nice video - interesting to learn the backstory. Golden Axe is considerably more fun than Double Dragon so looks like they succeeded there!
Great video
Fan fact:the death sounds were pixelated versions of some of the death sounds in the conan movies
My "favourite" memory of this game is trying to run a pirated copy on my mother's PC. When I somehow got it running, I was seriously underwhelmed (maybe because I was so shit at it as an 8yr old with just keyboard controls and absolutely no clue how to play).
TIL Space Harrier 2 was an original Japanese launch title. Helps explain why the game was so much more threadbare than it really needed to be, with most elements running at a dismal 15fps, and the soundtrack sounding like a couple dozen experimental tunes that were never meant to be used in a commercial product.
I remember playing this game on friends computer, and thinking that they way they always referred to the badguy as Death = Adder was weird. Do a video on Golden Axe 2 in all its various forms I'd love to see it.
I spent major coinage to beat this game in the neighborhood cornerstore....aah memories. (Good times, good stuff)
I bought this game 5 months before I even got my Genesis for Christmas, I was that hyped about it
My first game for my imported Japanese Megadrive that I bought in 1990. I was blown away!
I owned the C64 version which is severely limited (one opponent on screen at a time!) but at the end of the day still contains the spirit of the game and has very good music by Jeroen Tel. The Amiga version is excellent.
I remember playing this in the arcade when I was about 6. Some older kids stopped to watch me for a minute and one of them said “this kid’s a wiz” I thought I was so cool haha
Open video, immediately hit "Like". This beat 'em up series is your best yet!
1:03 Cool haircut alert! This is not a drill!
I remember completing the game playing as Tyris Flare on my own. Would love a remake after playing SOR4!!!
I love me some Golden Axe. I'm an avid Tyris Flare player and enjoyed both of the originals and their sequels. I ended up playing it a lot more on the Genesis than in the arcades, especially after the arcades got Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This video makes me want to play this game on the Pandora box and maybe, finally, beat it...after 30 years.
It was "goldaxe.exe" for me! What a game. Played it ever since I can remember, finished it when I was 3 y.o. :D. Not being able to read or write, but somehow I learnt how to start it from DOS.
I need me a next gen reimagining of Golden Axe
After playing it in the Arcade back in the day I had to get it for my Sega Master System, good memories.
Love this
This was the first beatemup I completed, a PC version at a friend's...
I was more of a Streets of Rage fanatic, but now I know why they were so good.
I rember going down to the shadiest liquor store in south central los angeles jus to play this game with my big brother, what a classic!!! YYYYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder was the best one ever, 4 play action!!!!
Golden Axe needs a revival.
Golden Axe has one of the best soundtracks in gaming history.
THIS Sega IP needs to be turned into a movie, after Sonic. Eternal Champions being another one. Streets of Rage also but that was quite a contemporary game setting.
I was thankful to have played Golden Axe as I missed out on the SEGA Genesis so I was thankful of playing the Golden Axe trilogy on the Ultimate SEGA Mega collection on the PS3.
These days we should be thankful for Vanillaware's Dragon's Crown as that game was inspired by Golden Axe as well as other Beat em Ups that were perfect for that niche developer's side scrolling action of their games.
I always picked the female character... In my opinion, she had the best magical power...
Kryz Matic I picked her because she looked hot. I’m a simple guy.
Used to love in the turtle bridge if you stood still long enough double tough skeletons would spawn to fuck you up. This game art of fighting and Hippodrome. Crime Buster's and vendetta2 were my arcade life as a kid
OMG THAT MUSIC 🙌🏿
Such a great game! Visually it was a treat, as at the time no other game had anything as impressive as Tyris' dragon magic. On the PC version you could also copy sprite file data over the main characters for a different gameplay experience too.
man i loved this game and was fortunate enough to play it for free on an arcade owned by a summer camp i attended as a kid. i beat it with my fellow campers many many times
Back in the day, I loved playing Golden Axe in the arcades, and eventually learned how to beat the game solo and with a single coin. I still do it on MAME nowadays, though the game is surely much more fun playing with a buddy!
All about having your charge attack on lock and not riding an animal no matter how appealing they seem
@@jacobprice8048 Well, I have a different approach. I always ride the dragons, no matter what. They are by far the best weapon of the game. Enemies are always attacking you when they're in line with your character - and they'll always try to be aligned with you, that's how they're programmed - so you can take advantage of this programming instruction to make your foes suicide when there is a hole right below them and you can be at a lower position on screen. Check an illustration of my approach at 14:31. And, of course, always try to stick your sword down your enemies' heads, by hitting forward twice to make your character run, then jump and hit attack. If they're regular enemies, they'll die instantly (check it at 7:40)
Sunday THGM! Excellent
Hey, Top Hat Gaming Man. Can you please do a video on Virtua Fighter?
Recently bought a region free modded VSaturn on eBay. Seriously need to buy Golden Axe The Duel, looks so cool.
One of the games I grew up with in the arcade same with other Sega best arcade games like after burner many more
So GOLDEN AXE on mega drive is best conversion for home? good episode. please make one with GB DOngkey Kong. Why this game is an absolute master peace!
I played ths arcade version before the megadrive version and I've got to say I prefair the arcade
I was 6 in 93 when I played these. I couldn't tell any difference 🤣
Nah Genesis was better
@@olschoolTonyCarter it really wasnt
Nah the arcade is better, the gameplay is more gritty and a lot harder, I am glad they released the arcade port of this for the PS3.
And when I got my copy of golden axe for my Sega mega drive it was so awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
I'm surprised you didnt mention the obvious fantasy illustration influence for both the villains. Death Dealer was a helmeted fantasy charicter created by famous illustrator Frank Frazetta. Look him up and you will see some fantasy artwork you allready know but might not know the name of.
Was not aware conan and lord of the rings played such a role in the development of golden axe 😯 Two of my favorite things growing up. Great vid top hat 👌
Really? Even when this game was new (and I was in high school), I saw this game as a Conan game under a different name. I wouldn't have connected it to Lord of the Rings, but to be fair, the only Tolkien book I read at that point was the Hobbit, and honestly it didn't make much of an impression. But Golden Ax was probably my favorite game at the time.
