Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder I only played this once in the arcades and never played it again. It's really a diamond in the rough and a hidden gem amongst beat em ups and hack and slash games.

The golden axe street fighter could of been the graphical upgrade for Saturn release of this game or even have all the games in an updated style ported too the Saturn, linking the series together in one massive adventure.
I'm sure THGM knows how understated the word "Disgustingly Ignored" is for this game. Undeniably one of the best arcade games I have played. Hope they revive this as a Beat 'Em Up itself. Thanks THGM for the nostalgia!
What you should ask is , why does the centaur need to ride other animals. It should also carry the catapult and arrow weapons like the creature mounted characters do.
The most likely answer is that the animators probably couldn't get the image of a woman with a horse lower body riding on a mount to look decent. So rather than having the centaur not be able to ride mounts, they simply gave her a human lower body just for mount riding. They probably figured that players would be having too much fun playing the game to question the silliness of it all.
This game used to be at my local bowling alley. They had it set up right next to the Dungeons and Dragons Tower of Doom arcade game. Both were a blast to play and a lot of us spent so many quarters on them!
As someone who had this game in his arcade since he was a child till he was an adult in Chinatown Fair, NYC, they always had this game since it released, and this is the most amazing beatemup most have NEVER played. Period.
Revenge of Death Adder is STILL one of my favorite arcade games of all time. It's challenging but fair, the combat is incredibly varied and flows very well at a pace that's not too plodding or overwhelming. This is one of those games that was so polished, I couldn't really think of anything that would have made it any better. It truly is bewildering why this game has been left so obscure. We have Streets of Rage 4 and it is bliss. It's time to give Golden Axe the retro polish revamp and revive this forgotten franchise. Also, just gonna put this out there, from an animation perspective, Dora is a master class. The art team must have spent a lot of time seeing how horses move to get some of her animations just right.
Back at CES 2020 in January, Arcade 1Up annaunced that they were working on a new Golden Axe cabinet with Golden Axe, Golden Axe II: The Revenge of Death Adder, Altered Beast, Shinobi, and Wrestle Wars. I wonder if that's still in the works? Why Sega has not made a Sega Ages port of this game on the Switch is beyond comprehension. Thanks for the great video.

@@FatNorthernBigot to a degree, but at the time, the Sega Saturn was known as a 2d powerhouse, capable of some of the best 2d visuals of that generation. The third parties, like Capcom and SNK, capitalized on it by releasing some of their big 2d titles on it. It was known, at the time, if you wanted to play stuff like the Street Fighters or the King of Fighters, etc, you best get a Saturn. Capcom even released the, first home version of Dungeons and Dragons Arcade collection on it. Somehow, SEGA first-party, still never decided to bring back this classic.

Golden Axe: The Duel was great on Saturn, and this would have been a great Saturn title as well. Almost as great as two other Saturn titles: Warriors of Fate & Capcom’s spectacular D&D. Also reminiscent of IGS’s Knights Of Valour Series.

Would like to see you cover Denjin Makai 2 - and tbh even the first ghost chaser as neither get much of a mention and the second one in particular is an excellent scrolling beat em up
You forgot to mention some interesting features, such as Dora losing her horse legs and turning into a human just so she can ride creatures, and also Gilius Thunderhead sacrificing himself to save everyone from Death Adder's final suicide attack.
Hopefully the new Sega Ages collect finally gets on this. Several PCBs of the game are now encountering audio-component-death, and even phoenixing the problematic part of the board isn't fixing the sound in many cases now. The remaining working copies could all go to junk in the very near future.
You uploaded this video after I spent the weekend telling multiple friends about the experience I had playing this on a Tinder date a few years ago... you’re a wizard, Big Daddy Top Hat. ❤️
Thanks to Arcade1up I'll FINALLY soon be enjoying the heck out of this game at home in the best format possible with the right controls. SO glad I never had to suffer through what would have been inevitably CRAPPY console ports of this LEGENDARY SEGA GAME. 😎
THGM, Would you ever think of doing live streams of you playing some of these games? I really would love to join you and some blokes on the week ends on Twitch or something as you play and stream
i did play it on release, unfortunately it was not the 4p cabinet version. but i loved it nonetheless, one of the best beat'em up experiences ever. it took ages for mame to emulate it somewhat correctly but then the magic came back again.. what a game
I only hope with the success of streets of rage 4 that developers start looking at games like golden axe and other fantasy themed side scrolling beatumups and see the potential they hold. I personally would be all over those those games if they did. Revenge of death adder was my streets of rage 2 of the arcade fantasy genre.
Where can i play this? You should do a section telling us where we can get these games today. Even if we need to download a ROM from somewhere. Tell us where. That would be nice. Other than that good video!!!😎
This is my favorite Golden Axe game. I'm a Dora player and I agree that it's awful this game never got a home release. Ever played Blades of Vengeance? It's one of my favorite-ever Genesis games and it's one I feel doesn't get enough love. It would be a good subject for one of your videos, I think. And how did you not know Mantises like curry? EVERYONE knows that. ;)
SEGA's mighty entry of the Golden Axe saga. And just like Capcom's 19XX, Golden Axe: Revenge Of Death will remain an arcade exclusive. If only the creative team behind the new Streets Of Rage game could make a new Golden Axe game for next-gen consoles.
Fantastic game. As a big fan of the golden axe series I've never been able to give an honest opinion on this one bc I haven't been able to play it until recently. Finally got it to work on mame 2003 although there are some graphical issues. Still able to play it though and now I can say this is without a doubt the best GA game. Like many people have said, it prob didn't make it to the Saturn bc it was already out for a couple years, and Sega probably felt it wouldn't make a big enough profit. Even so I would've appreciated a PC port at the very least like the first game got. It sure does seem to be getting quite a bit of attention from golden axe fans, and maybe someday Sega will take people's advice and rerelease it. Sure hope so bc for me it's up there with the best best em ups of all time.
If not for emulation, this game would be buried and forgotten. Yet sega still needs to keep releasing the same compilation collection over and over..... (Friendly tip: Fire the suit who keeps doing this and get someone who knows the library catalog)
I hope they will ever release this game but I doubt it and I dont understand why. They could release it on the psn or let Hamster (from the Arcade Archives) handle this. But again, I doubt they ever will and its a bloody shame. 🤦🏽♂️
Fully enjoy this Golden Axe as a child I believed this to be GA4 as from my perspective Golden Axe 3- Thunderhead was crippled and there was a giant character Golden Axe ROD Thunderhead was riding a well groomed Giant I was happy when Arcade Archives came in hopes of playing this again sadly so far no, its only home release will be the new Arcade 1Up which I can’t order in my country 😭
1992 might have been the biggest year ever for arcade games. From xmen to mortal kombat and 5 iterations of street fighter. Without the internet even really existing at the time people were experiencing what was put in front of them. At my local arcade in 1992 ("the dream machine") there were two small lines and one big one. Two small lines for xmen and street fighter and the larger line for mortal kombat as everyone anticipated a home version that they would need to prepare for to play against friends. Other games such as death adder just got lost in the large selection of games released that year. But thats just a recipe for a cult classic right?!
I was highly upset that Sega never gave this game justice. I love this game when it came out and hope of arcade 1 or anybody decides to bring this game out to do it the right way.
Though i never played this game,i did play 2 similar games called dungeons & dragons:tower of doom & shadow over mystara.please talk about those 2 in the future along w/the bouncer on ps2,urban reign on ps2,& scott pilgrim vs the world
A SEGA arcade mini that was full of unconsolized arcade games would be great. Games like Turbo Outrun, Outrunners, Spiderman Arcade, Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder, AB Cop. Arcade version of ESWAT, Thunderblade, Moonwalker, etc. What a waste. Thankfully we have emulation. But a true console version with extra options would be great.
This game is brilliant. Only discovered it in 2018. Never knew it even existed until then. I own it and will get back on it tomorrow. People need to play this masterpiece.
As covered in the video the game could not be easily ported to home consoles at the time of release. Plus in 92-94 beat em ups quickly fell out of favor as Street Fighter 2 and the like became the red hot genre for gaming in the arcades and on consoles. By the time the Saturn was out it was all about 3D and 1 on 1 fighters. Plus the 92-93 time frame is also when Sega started making a lot of bad decisions in the home console space.
Games like this are the reason why we should all appreciate game emulation. Without emulation the only way to experience this game would be finding an original arcade cabinet.
Top Hat Gaming Man, here is my suggested fighting and beat 'em up games that you should cover in future videos. Fighting Games: Mortal Kombat II Dead or Alive Pokken Tournament SoulCalibur The King of Fighters '95 Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Ultra Street Fighter IV Fighting Vipers Primal Rage Tekken (original) Virtua Fighter 2 Real Bout: Fatal Fury Samurai Shodown II Art of Fighting 2 X-Men: Children of the Atom Marvel Super Heroes Tech Romancer Power Stone 2 Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo 64) Savage Reign Waku Waku 7 Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Super Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball FighterZ Persona 4 Arena Battle Arena Toshinden Star Gladiator Bloody Roar BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (1998 Arcade game) Double Dragon (Neo Geo) Sonic Championship (Sonic the Fighters) Mega Man: The Power Battle Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters Beat 'em Ups: Double Dragon (1987) Ninja Baseball Bat Man 64th Street: A Detective Story SpikeOut: Digital Battle Online SpikeOut: Battle Street River City Ransom Die Hard Arcade Dynamite Cop Knights of the Round The King of Dragons Battle Circuit Zombie Revenge
I call BS on the fact that it was never ported to the Genesis 32X or the Saturn. I remember playing this at Spaghetti Warehouse when I was a kid. I play it on Mame on my PC from time to time.
I think I played that once in the arcade. By the time 1992 rolled around I'd take my money to the arcade and wouldn't even think of playing anything but SF2 though.
Finished it a few times with my mate in the arcade back in the day, it was such a huge, impressive cabinet. Fantastic game, very impressive & a massive coin eater ;) . Sega's best arcade game for me personally, and a missed opportunity, imagine this being a pack in game for the Saturn...why the fuck this never came out on the system is beyond me, it could've easily handled the graphics and all the sprites on screen...
Graphics like these were the reasons I always wanted to have am arcade cabinet instead of a home console ... I never get to own either though so just kept dreaming about it.

Wait what? You went on a Tinder date and ended up playing Revenge of Death Adder?? shit now i wanna know more lol
Thanks to Arcade1up I'll FINALLY soon be enjoying the heck out of this game at home in the best format possible with the right controls. SO glad I never had to suffer through what would have been inevitably CRAPPY console ports of this LEGENDARY SEGA GAME. 😎
I remember seeing this game in the mid 90s at an arcade called Fiesta Village.
One day I hope I can buy this board.
I remember playing this in the movie theater arcade before I was about to watch Mortal Kombat with a friend. Top 10 arcade beatemup of all time.
Thank you shading light on this amazing game, you are awesome 🙏🧡
THGM, Would you ever think of doing live streams of you playing some of these games? I really would love to join you and some blokes on the week ends on Twitch or something as you play and stream
It is the plan soon!
@@TopHatGamingManChannel "Yeaaaaaahhhh"
Amazing game ! That's why I keep searching for those hidden gems of the arcade era !
i did play it on release, unfortunately it was not the 4p cabinet version. but i loved it nonetheless, one of the best beat'em up experiences ever. it took ages for mame to emulate it somewhat correctly but then the magic came back again.. what a game
Sir Top of Hat. I do hope your keeping well after your video during lockdown. This is a great video.
Easy...take a android box..or raspberry 3..recallbox..mame...
Or a real arcade pcb...but expensive.
Absolutely incredible work. Can’t wait to see your next anything.
EVERYONE knows that. ;)
This game was so sick! Too bad it came out when Street Fighter was king.
Sega should pick up the saga and entrust the developers of dragon crown...
Another good episode, I suggest taking a look at Battletoads on the arcade.
Really want a classic Golden Axe collection on modern consoles. 1,2,3 and Revenge of Death Adder in one package, minus the shitty ones.
😊👍💝
Arcade 1UP is releasing a Sega cabinet which includes Revenge of Death Adder and 4P support. Nice. =)
Glad to see Death Adder getting love from both sides of the Atlantic!
I Love this game, my pals and I play this monthly, well used to. Should have come out on the Saturn. Thanks for the video.
At least this game has been released onto Arcade 1up Golden Axe arcade collection
I'd like to to see more about the elusive Golden Axe fighting game
Yeah, screamed Jason, Conan, Krull, BeastMaster etc ... loved it
I hope they will ever release this game but I doubt it and I dont understand why. They could release it on the psn or let Hamster (from the Arcade Archives) handle this. But again, I doubt they ever will and its a bloody shame. 🤦🏽♂️
Does anyone know how to play this on PC? I used to have a CD that had a bunch of arcade games and this on it and I want to revisit it
Revenge of DeathAdder was unique that you could play as a centaurette.
Fully enjoy this Golden Axe as a child I believed this to be GA4 as from my perspective
Golden Axe 3- Thunderhead was crippled and there was a giant character
Golden Axe ROD Thunderhead was riding a well groomed Giant
I was happy when Arcade Archives came in hopes of playing this again sadly so far no, its only home release will be the new Arcade 1Up which I can’t order in my country 😭
An outstanding game best in the Golden Axe series!! Am I allowed to say there's a full playthrough on my channel? ;)
I never have seen this game b4. Great video. Hats off to you M8.
Yup, just went and hopped on the 1up notification list for the Golden Axe cabinet.
Please cover Beyond Oasis. An absolute jewel for the Mega Drive =)
It still pisses me off that we never got this on the Saturn...the D&D arcade games were ported to that console, so why not?
Dotemu is going to make this Into Modern Master Piece (i hope😁)
such a good game, shame i never got to play this outside of emulation, would love to play this on an arcade

I call BS on the fact that it was never ported to the Genesis 32X or the Saturn. I remember playing this at Spaghetti Warehouse when I was a kid. I play it on Mame on my PC from time to time.
I’d like to see you do Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.
