What I really liked about how you approached the list, though, is that your video highlighted a lot of really important metal albums in a way that showed how they shaped the genre, and as someone that admittedly leans more towards rock generally than metal, I had a lot of "I haven't really sat down with that record. I should do that" moments while watching. I'm looking forward to part 2! 👍
Loved the list! It's the 90's for me the decade I came to metal, couldn't judge what came before. 94 would be Korn for me. Love Deftones but City (1997) from Strapping Young Lad is my pick. Not Metal but Version 2.0 (1998) from Garbage is one my favorite albums ever.

Cant resist a list. I'm starting from 86, because thats when I first got serious about metal 86. Metallica - Master of Puppets. Orion is still one of the greatest pieces of music rock/metal has ever produced. 87. Napalm Death - Scum. That record changed everything for me. 88. Slayer - South of Heaven. A whole new sonic palette for metal to play with. 89. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness. Impossible to ignore this one. 90. Judas Priest - Painkiller. Still the best pure heavy metal record of all time. 91. Motorhead - 1916. The band were absolutely on fire for a few years, and this stands out as one of the best. 92. Helmet - Meantime. One of the most criminally overlooked bands in history. 93. Sepultura - Chaos A.D. Absolutely untouchable. 94. Nailbomb - Point Blank. - Relentless aggression. DK, FF, The Seps. What's not to like? 95. Immortal - Battles in The North. A frozen journey through the realm of Blashyrk. Epic stuff. 96. Neurosis - Through silver in Blood . A terrifying record from start to finish. 97. Pig Destroyer - Demo + Split EP with Orchid. Grindcore taken to the absolute extreme. 98. Meshuggah - Chaosphere. Still the album of thiers I play the most. 99. Botch - We are The Romans. A difficult listen, but rewarding if you have the patience for it. Metal had lost its way by 1999, Nu-metal was stinking everything up, and the glamsters were threatening to come back. The labels were being super cautious about releasing anything that wasnt dressed in a tracksuit, and having a DJ and a stupid mask were considered essential to being a heavy metal band. What a terrible time it was.
A lot of great albums that you have picked for your list. I think there has been some great metal since 1999 though and I'll go through some if it in part 2
Great picks... I started on the metal scene later on so I am part of the lost ha ha... Neurosis and Meshuggah are massive bands that also provided the fundations of trends further on.

@@PatoIzquierdo Its amazing to me that those two bands had as big an impact on the scene as they did and still do, considering that they were out on the fringe at first, especially neurosis. more bands were influenced by the bands that they influenced I think.

I'd give Powerslave's 1984 crown to Defenders Of The Faith. Their best album where you get 110% Rob Halford. I'm a bit biased though. I loved / love it. Also, Bathory's epic masterpiece, Blood, Fire, Death came out in, Operation Mind Crime's, 1988. It's a bit schizophrenic (inasmuch as: is it Satanist / or is it Odinist???) but it is massive in scope, sound and execution and it had a hand in the birthing and rise of 2 genres. I bought it the year it came out and, to me, it's more than just an album, if you know what I mean, so that, naturally, elevates it to the top of the tree, for that year. I completely understand your logic with agreeing with Black Album for 91 but I can't pick that over some of the insane albums out that year haha. I just can't do it!!!!
1970 Deep Purple In Rock 1980 Black Sabbath 1983 Iron Maiden 1984 Manowar 1988 Helloween Keeper pt.2 1993 Death I.T.P. 1994 Tiamat Wildhoney 1995 Death Symbolic 1996 Katatonia B.M.D. 1997 Mekong Delta - pictures 1998 Rhapsody 😅 1999 Testament Agree on the others :)
My list of metal albums from the 90's would definitely look very different. It would Probably be something like this: 1990 - Entombed - Left Hand Path 1991 - Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream 1992 - Dream Theater - Images and Words 1993 - My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans 1994 - Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes 1995 - Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery 1996 - Edge Of Sanity - Crimson 1997 - Empyrium - Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields 1998 - Death - The Sound Of Perseverance 1999 - Opeth - Still Life
Stuff you didn't mention: 1994 - Amorphis - Tales From A Thousand Lakes (I would still choose Burn My Eyes) 1995 - Paradise Lost - Draconian Times (I would choose this) 1998 - Blind Guardian - Nightfall of Middle Earth (I would choose this) 1999 - Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory (easy #1 of that year) Also, IMO Meshuggah was doing the Djenty stuff before or same time as Fear Factory. (I do love Fear Factory too)
The 90's is so tough to decide on, i think though I'd put for 96 the "Through Silver In Blood" by Neurosis. It's just a game changer record, it's basically a record that created a whole Post Metal genre. I'm happy for Dillinger though, my favourite by them.
@ThatMetalBloke I'll be sure to watch it. Only recently discovered this channel, and it's quickly becoming a fave because you have the same dry sense of humour I have haha.
I would throw Blind Guardian - Battalions of Fear into the ring for 1988. I think that is a huge influence for the whole power metal genre. Also in 1994 I would definitely pick Emperor's "In the nightside eclipse". That Album is way more important than "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk", not saying "Welkin" is bad, but the influence their first one had is way more important.
Agree with much of your picks. Apart from the Black Album, which almost brought me out of metal. You can't leave out half of the 70's! 😮 1979 would, of course, be Overkill with Bomber following in second place.
1994 - Burn My Eyes definitely beats Far Beyond Driven. I think FBD rides the wave of being a #1 album, but there are a couple of filler tracks for me. Whereas BME is just epic and brutal all the way through.
1993 belongs to Heartwork. I love Chaos AD, but they did rip off Helmet in parts... Not a bad thing! Also 1993 brought us Entombed with Wolverine Blues!
1986 has to be Slayer "Reign in Blood". 1990 is Painkiller. THE metal album for me, what represents the genre as a whole 1993 is Chaos AD. One of my first loves in Metal. 1995 is Demanufacture. But I think it was Meshuggah who started the djent stuff with Destroy Erase Improve, also from 1995. Ministry deserved a year but it goes against beast bands.
In 1993 I think Carcass "Heartwork" album is the best for that year, but only by bee's dick over Sepultura "Chaos AD". Bill Steer is such an underrated guitarist, his riff's are just incredible and with Michael Amott in the band at the time it was a great combination of lead and rhythm guitar work. The reason it is the best for 93 is due to the relentless riff's that are played, each song doesn't let you go from start to finish. Songs such as "Embodiment", "Arbeit Macht Fleisch" and "This Mortal Coil" are just phenomenal.
Ride the Lightning is a masterpiece , but lets be honest , Metallica did not break down doors until Master of Puppets , by then they became household names ..,
Vulgar Display of Power is the worst thing to happen to metal almost in the entire history of metal. It brought on groove metal, all your favourite thrash bands released that worst albums because of it, it influenced groove, metalcore, nu metal and all the worst shit that came out in the 90's Fuck Pantera, Fuck Phil Anselmo, Psuedo tough guy bullshit, shit riffs shit vocals, people say they carried the flag for metal or whatever in the 90's I say they are the downfall for metal in that era. There was a heap of great stuff being released, no-where near any of that terrible groove nu metal shit.
Surely, based on your own criteria, Dio's Holy Diver would be number 1 in 83? I'd say that's a perfect album, extremely influential, and I'd say ALL metalheads love this album and even non metalheads. Kill 'em All is rarely considered Metallica' best album. Now, I absolutely love Kill 'em All, but I was trying to be fair it's a pretty flawed album. The flaws are part of it's charm but I still think for that reason it shouldn't be number 1 if I was trying to be as objective as possible.
British steel is overrated in my opinon. Heaven & Hell is definetaly nr 1 for 1980 in my opinion. Here's my picks: 70. Black Sabbath - Paranoid 71. Uriah Heep - Salisbury 72. Metallica - Master of Puppets 87. Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King (Or Helloween - Kepper of the 7 keys pt1) 88. Queensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime (I will fight anyone who disagrees, although The Warning is my 3rd fav album of alltime and I prefer it over this album) 89. Danzig - Danzig 90. Judas Priest - Painkiller (Megadeth is overrated AF) 91. Metallica - Black Album 92. Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark (I know this is a very controversion one, I used to not be the biggest fan of this album, always loved title track & Judas Be My Guide though) (Or Danzig III) 93. Dio - Strange Highways (Incredibly underrated album, my fav Dio(solo band) album) 94. Helloween - Master of the Rings 95. Opeth - Orchid 96. Iced Earth - Dark Saga (Or Metallica - Load, and album I fkn LOVE!) 97. Rammstein - Sehnsucht 98. Blind Guardian - Nightfall in the Middle Earth 99. Opeth - Still Life

2020: Inquisition - Black Mass for a Mass Grave
2021: Mastodon - Hushed and Grim
2022: Acherontas - Malocchio - The Seven Tongues of Δαημων
2023 - Marduk - Memento Mori
I 100% agree with Scream Bloody Gore, fucking love that album.
I completely understand your logic with agreeing with Black Album for 91 but I can't pick that over some of the insane albums out that year haha. I just can't do it!!!!
Fair enough mate
1970 Deep Purple In Rock
1980 Black Sabbath
1983 Iron Maiden
1984 Manowar
1988 Helloween Keeper pt.2
1993 Death I.T.P.
1994 Tiamat Wildhoney
1995 Death Symbolic
1996 Katatonia B.M.D.
1997 Mekong Delta - pictures
1998 Rhapsody 😅
1999 Testament
Agree on the others :)
Good choices mate. Hard to argue
Katatonia....you have my like. I think it's a band that needs more recognition.
Machine Head and Fear Factory were game changers. Great picks.
Incredible albums 🤘
Not a single mention of Cradle Of Filth
1996's Cruelty And The Beast, amazing gothic/black
1994's Dusk...And Her Embrace, another atmospheric banger
1993 - Paradise Lost - Icon
1996 - Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Great albums
My list of metal albums from the 90's would definitely look very different. It would Probably be something like this: 1990 - Entombed - Left Hand Path
1991 - Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
1992 - Dream Theater - Images and Words
1993 - My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
1994 - Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes
1995 - Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery
1996 - Edge Of Sanity - Crimson
1997 - Empyrium - Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields
1998 - Death - The Sound Of Perseverance
1999 - Opeth - Still Life
Valid picks. There are so many albums that I forgot to mention that it is insane
Stuff you didn't mention:
1994 - Amorphis - Tales From A Thousand Lakes (I would still choose Burn My Eyes)
1995 - Paradise Lost - Draconian Times (I would choose this)
1998 - Blind Guardian - Nightfall of Middle Earth (I would choose this)
1999 - Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory (easy #1 of that year)
Also, IMO Meshuggah was doing the Djenty stuff before or same time as Fear Factory. (I do love Fear Factory too)
Good choices mate.
As far as Meshuggah go. I meant they got more credit in the long run. Didn't explain myself very well 😂
The 90's is so tough to decide on, i think though I'd put for 96 the "Through Silver In Blood" by Neurosis. It's just a game changer record, it's basically a record that created a whole Post Metal genre. I'm happy for Dillinger though, my favourite by them.
Through Silver is an amazing album for sure. One of my favourite Neurosis albums
Nice Intro 😂🔥
Thanks a lot 🤘
Love Beneath The Remains, but I agree. Altars of Madness is absolutely better. I also agree Arise would've been a harder choice
Alters is such a great album
1992 Honorable Mention: Ugly Kid Joe America's Least Wanted
Ha ha underrated album, I wore out that cassette back in the day!! Such a fun band and album
Great pick for 97 with City. But I'd have to agree with the article with Emperor
It's City all the way for me but I love the Emperor album as well
@ThatMetalBloke City is amazing, my friend. I feel like SYL doesn't get talked about much anymore unfortunately
I agree completely. Gonna be doing an SYL album ranking within the next few months to get people talking again 🤘@@Oldy-Sepulchre
@ThatMetalBloke I'll be sure to watch it. Only recently discovered this channel, and it's quickly becoming a fave because you have the same dry sense of humour I have haha.
@@Oldy-Sepulchre Thanks a lot mate. Glad you're enjoying the channel 🤘
I prefer Nightside as well. Fantastic album.
Agree with much of your picks. Apart from the Black Album, which almost brought me out of metal. You can't leave out half of the 70's! 😮 1979 would, of course, be Overkill with Bomber following in second place.
I was in such a fluster doing this video that my brain wasn't firing on all cylinders. I will re-address the 70's albums at some stage
1993 Carcass Heartwork 🤘🏻
1994 - Burn My Eyes definitely beats Far Beyond Driven. I think FBD rides the wave of being a #1 album, but there are a couple of filler tracks for me. Whereas BME is just epic and brutal all the way through.
That was my thinking as well and as I had already represnted Pantera with Vulgar I figured that BME should take top spot
1993 belongs to Heartwork. I love Chaos AD, but they did rip off Helmet in parts... Not a bad thing! Also 1993 brought us Entombed with Wolverine Blues!
Great albums both. I love Chaos A.D. and Heartwork equally. I like Wolverine Blues but it doesn't hold up to the first 2 albums for me
1998 Fear Factory Obsolete, love that album
Great album
I think you forgot to mention Obituary's Slowly We Rot from 1989
There are a ton of albums I didn't mention 😂
King Diamond definitely the best album of 87. Abigail is in my top 5 albums of all time
Great album for sure
94 belongs to NIN , what an album ..,
1986 has to be Slayer "Reign in Blood".
1990 is Painkiller. THE metal album for me, what represents the genre as a whole
1993 is Chaos AD. One of my first loves in Metal.
1995 is Demanufacture. But I think it was Meshuggah who started the djent stuff with Destroy Erase Improve, also from 1995.
Ministry deserved a year but it goes against beast bands.
Great picks. With Messugah, I just meant that they get a lot of credit for the syncopated stuff while FF seem to have been forgotten
I would say Metal on Metal by Anvil was likely the first thrash album , but such things are very subjective ..,
In 1993 I think Carcass "Heartwork" album is the best for that year, but only by bee's dick over Sepultura "Chaos AD".
Completely agree the Bill is very underrated. Not only is he an amazing lead player but his riffs are some of the best out there
93 , Sepultura , no contest
94 would be In The Nightside Eclipse for me
Great choice. Great album
83 , even if not a fan , but have to go with Motley Crue here ..,
Ride the Lightning is a masterpiece , but lets be honest , Metallica did not break down doors until Master of Puppets , by then they became household names ..,
That is true but I hear more and more people saying they prefer Ride over Master nowadays. Great album
@@ThatMetalBloke , both great , maybe now a bit hip or cool to say one prefers Ride over Master ?
@@ThatMetalBlokeI agree and it's only on the pretense that I have listened to Master so many damn times!! 😂
Master is great , but man Sabotage for me was the game changer ..,
Will always be Master for me
1994 Cannibal Corpse The Bleeding 🤘🏻
Very valid pick 🤘
AEnima is pronounced AEnima. Glad I could help!
Thanks a lot
I’m sorry, my friend, but ‘99 is ruled by Testament’s The Gathering.
Now go listen to Fall of Sipledome!
Slipknot 1999.
hush.
Valid. Don't know how I missed that one. So many albums I missed it's ridiculous
man so hard to go against Angel Dust .., it influenced just as much as Pantera ..,
True and I love that album but I think Pantera get it for this year
I'm a bloke. I like lists. You better not have f**ked this one up, though 🤔🤣🤘
Ha ha, he did very well with this, no f**king up here! 🤘
For 91' it has to be Human
Painkiller is just a King Diamond copy & paste, the ‘Black’ album sounds like doomsters Trouble in some ways
1999 Opeth Still Life ??
I forgot Slipknot who should have got the win for that year
1998 the chemical wedding. Bruce dickinson.
Sharon clearly sent loudwire an envelope of cash 😂😂 maybe she should have used it to pay Jake E. Lee and Bob Daisley instead pfft.
1999 still life opeth
Great pick
88 Queensryche , no contest ..,
What's your favourite album to workout to? 💪
I have a playlist with around a 1000 songs on that I call 'The Shit' and I play that on random. Death metal, grindcore, hardcore, thrash and groove
I totally get your point but I still go with Kill Em All for the influence. I know it's not perfect but it was something completely new.
98 , like him or not Rob Zombie Hellbilly Deluxe ,
Love that album
British steel is overrated in my opinon.
Heaven & Hell is definetaly nr 1 for 1980 in my opinion.
Here's my picks:
70. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
71. Uriah Heep - Salisbury
72. Deep Purple - Machine Head
73. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
74. Deep Purple - Burn
75. Rush - Fly By Night
76. Rainbow - Rising (JP - Sad Wings of Destiny is REALLLLLY close behind. Both RR & SWOD are my top 2 fav albums of all time)
77. Rush - A Farewell to Kings
78. Judas Priest - Stained Class (or Killing Machine)
79. Motörhead - Bomber (or Overkill)
80. Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell
81. Saxon - Denim & Leather
82. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
83. Dio - Holy Diver
84. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith
85. Helloween - Walls of Jericho
86. Metallica - Master of Puppets
87. Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King (Or Helloween - Kepper of the 7 keys pt1)
88. Queensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime (I will fight anyone who disagrees, although The Warning is my 3rd fav album of alltime and I prefer it over this album)
89. Danzig - Danzig
90. Judas Priest - Painkiller (Megadeth is overrated AF)
91. Metallica - Black Album
92. Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark (I know this is a very controversion one, I used to not be the biggest fan of this album, always loved title track & Judas Be My Guide though) (Or Danzig III)
93. Dio - Strange Highways (Incredibly underrated album, my fav Dio(solo band) album)
94. Helloween - Master of the Rings
95. Opeth - Orchid
96. Iced Earth - Dark Saga (Or Metallica - Load, and album I fkn LOVE!)
97. Rammstein - Sehnsucht
98. Blind Guardian - Nightfall in the Middle Earth
99. Opeth - Still Life
Cheers for sharing mate. Very interesting hearing other people's picks 🤘
I would have said obsolete by fear factory for 98"
Fair play mate. Crazy how many albums I missed
@ThatMetalBloke it's one of my gateway albums when I grew up..I was 14 and found the album through my cousin...I absolutely love it
No mention of 1980’s Back in Black? Blasphemy.
Loudwire don't have a clue, they think anything with a guitar in it is "Metal".....hence the inclusion of novelty dullards Ghost.
Not even a single mention of Bathory for the years 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990. What a joke.
Fair point. The amount of albums I missed is insane.
Fear Factory sux a$?
Chaos AD for 1993. Typo were a joke band.
Does having a funny side automatically disqualify you from being metal now?
@@SomerankeroffYT no, but steeles crappy herman munster impression does
Type O were awesome but I agree Chaos A.D. is the win for 93
