  • Rat Rods are hot! So, Joe and Mike explore the lifestyle and go on a mission to find the perfect Rat Rod body for our "Raunchy Rat". First, they visit the annual Street Rod Nationals in search of a chassis for their '29 roadster Rat Rod body. Then, back at the shop they load it with suspension, brakes and a steering box. After that, they show you how to channel the body to make it ride right on the frame before building and installing a vintage Ford Flathead motor, supercharger and transmission as Raunchy Rat gets closer to completion.
Then Joe and Mike finish the brakes and clutch, also creating a floorboard with road signs, installing some off-the-wall seats and finishing touches. A rat rod is never finished, so it seems. However, Joe and Mike finally put the finishing touches on their '29 Ford before Mike takes it to a local car show to blow people's minds.

Its a street rod with a rusty body, you guys just don't get it, sorry, "A" for effort but real ratrods aren't built with store bought parts and a shop like a ladies kitchen, they are scrounged from junk piles and built on a greasy garage or even a dirt floor by talented backyard engineers

Exactly my thoughts too.. It's a kinda copy of a ratrod on new parts.. Not in the spirit of a rat rod

You are so right. That thing is laughable. Powder coated frame in real rust. My frame was painted with black paint from a farm supply store. They should go back to shiny cars.

I think Welder Up is in a class by itself. The stuff they build that you don't see is better than the cars they show. Some of their rides border on clown cars. Agreed he does have some pricy cars. I'm kind of a purist, rats are built buy working guys in their garage. Build for fun.

    Couple thoughts:
1: The title should be .. "How To Spend Way Too Much Building A Rat Rod"!
2: Finish the fab work before painting your chassis!
3: Shop for cheap used parts so that the finale cost won't be a LOT more than the finished product is worth!
4: Learn how to fab some Rat Rod parts .... especially a grill because that one sucks worse than anything ever sucked before.
5: That's not a 9 inch ... someone lied to you .... and you should know your rear ends before getting on TV and talking about them!
6: And last but most important: Watch Rat Rod Bob Builds before building your Rat Rod.

Atleast TRY clean it up and make it look good. It can still look rusty without actually BEING rusty.

And I’d put one of the Chrysler 3.6 Ltr., v6, twin ohc, 296 hp, just to be different, and a good engine that doesn’t start with “LS SOMETHING”. My Chrysler van will burn the rubber if punched with the v6. It’s also compact.

Top Tip: Save your money until you find something you like, then change it to suit your taste. It's a lot cheaper in the long run. I would definitely NOT run a flathead. They are prone to overheat and be underpowered. Even a blown flathead makes as much power as a stock sbc. I used a '64 283 for a fraction of the costs of their flathead. My trans was a Muncie M-21.

I think the scrap body steel is worth more than regular scrap steel. It’s got something to do with steel made before nuclear weapons testing. The aerospace industry has a great need for non radioactive steel for special parts of aircraft. That’s why old navy ships have a higher scrap value.

@@garrettpolhamus3733 That's not my point at all. You can spend a million dollars building a rod. If you have the money, power to you!! The very foundation of the rat rod principle was born out of protest to everything that is done in this build because not everyone can afford all of these expensive parts and materials. So buy a new frame, suspension, steering, and drivetrain, just don't call it rat rod because it's an insult to the whole principle...get it? At the very least call it "How to build a mega dollar rat rod"...this video is very mis-leading and thus a huge disappontment to those who aren't just mindless viewers! Then again if you're pandering to idiots, who am I to stand in your way. BTW, I've built way nicer rides than this with way less money I'm not just some wannabe shooting his mouth off.

@@brucereimer4604 I agree they could have built this with junk parts from a junkyard showing what actually could be done by a person with a few thousand instead of just taking new parts out of a box and bolting it together I'm building a cut up 20s Chevy rat truck with just random parts I can get from a junkyard on a S10 truck frame $3000 in it crawling around a junkyard every other week going to get a Ls.5.3 fun junk for little to nothing is different than $20000 junk

@@joshslackslack8115 Thank you Josh. You actually get it! Cudos to you for building a real rat rod! Guys like you and I are an inspiration to the average person interested in building any type of project car. I too have built a street rod on a mini truck frame. I used an '85 Toyota pickup frame. It has won two awards and has been featured in two magazines as well as a front page news paper article. Like I said to garretpolhamus3733, I'm not just a wannabe.
