Unless you’re independently wealthy or your parents are able to pay your bills, living on your own at 18 is tough. You have to work your butt off to make rent and that plus studying means very little time for all the fun things Hank mentions. Plus no Alice to cook, clean, and do his laundry while he’s having fun. Greg’s parents should let him move out, he’d be running back home within a few months.

....y'know.... I do agree w/ Greg, that a Young Man his age shouldn't be sharing a ROOM w/ his siblings (2:40) .....But, I DO agree w/ Mike, that he should wait until College....A 'checkmate' move by Mike, because Greg will, 1. ..have to stay in School.. 2. ..he'll be out of the House... and, *NO GIRLS* , until he can handle the (independent) responsibility ..Bravo..(2:56)...

The inconsistency is in the earlier episode where Greg wants his own room, they said the attic was too small and like 2 feet tall. Now the attic is suddenly huge. But Mike was an architect so maybe they expect us to believe he somehow expanded it. Lol.

In real life, it’s not as simple as asking your parents if you can move out if you’re under 18. You have to get yourself emancipated which means the law has to declare you an adult.

I graduated high-school at 17 and moved out that summer.
Went to culinary school and worked in restaurants to pay for it.
Lived with 5 guys and 2 couples in a house owned by one of the guys parents that they rent out to college students.
Cost me 50 dollars a month. All I needed to supply was my own food which 90% of was free from work and school.
      This was the 80s.

Does he really think he'd get privacy as Hank's roommate? It might be a little better than with Peter and Bobby but not much. He'd have to be working at least part time to pay for his share of the rent and food. Plus do his schoolwork, just when would he have time for dating? In most college situations getting an apartment usually means 3 or 4 roommates (privacy? What's that?) There was a house for rent in my town recently, 5 bedroom and 2 bathroom and the owner wanted to rent it to college kids, 5 college kids who would be paying nearly $1000 each per month. To each have their own room but share bathroom and kitchen facilities. Greg should just stay put where he is.

I can't blame him either. It's one thing to share a room with your siblings when you're really close in age, and you're really young. When you get older though, you want your own space. Maybe that's not always possible, but it's perfectly normal for an older teen or young adult to not want to bunk with young siblings. In fact, I always wondered why Wally had to share a room with Beaver on Leave It To Beaver. I know it had to do with the show and the conversations they would have together in their room, but it always seemed a little strange to me because they had that great big house.

It was stated college is still a year off, so he's probably only 17, if that, and his parents are still responsible for him until he is an adult. Apparently he doesn't have a job either, so I don't know how he would be able to pay half of expenses unless he ended up getting a decent-paying job.
