  • Horizontal Canal BPPV isn't nearly as common as posterior canal BPPV, which you can test for using the Dix-Halpike Test, and then treat using the Epley Maneuver (see my previous videos).
In this video, I'll show you how to test for vertigo in your horizontal canals, as well as how to interpret the test.
While the test is pretty simple, the treatment isn't, so I won't go into details on how to treat this type of vertigo.
Please leave a comment or question below. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Have you ever had someone who feels vertigo (diagnozed BPPV) but when doing this test and the horizontal canal test, doesn’t get eye ticking? My dizziness is mostly when I read and drive but isn’t as severe. I haven’t found any method to work yet but I definitely have vertigo symptoms and doctor saw eye clicking and diagnosed me. Not sure where to go from here!

Just got diagnosed with a bulging disc (c5). Have a numbness and pins and needle pan that will travel the length of my left arm down to numbness in my first 3 fingers. Two days later im suffering from vertigo if i lay flat on my back.

I would try some vestibular exercises and gaze stabilization to see if that helps.

Has anyone looked at your eyes while you're having vertigo? The direction of the movement (nystagmus) will tell you which canal is involved.

Hi, Jerick. The Supine Roll Test (in the video) is for the horizontal canals. For the posterior and anterior canals, you use the Dix-Halpike. I believe I have a video for that one as well... The posterior canal is the most commonly involved for BPPV. Horizontal canal is less common, and anterior canal is almost non-existent. I hope that helps! - Luke Gordon

I’m still confused about how to tell the difference between geotropic and ageotropic. If your head is at 30 degrees downward and your eyes are moving back and forth with your head rotation to one side or the other, aren’t the eyes moving back and forth both toward the ground and the ceiling? I think it’d help if you demonstrated what one’s eyes did in each instance. Thank you!

You just contradicted yourself. What about the 30 degree head tilt up when testing??? Be consistent or do not speak on this

What are you referring to? 30 degrees of neck flexion during this test. Did I say something else?
