A lot of good advice! A five day fast is I feel a perfect length to get a true feel of the extended fasting process where food cravings all but disappear while the body increase metabolism for the migration journey our hunter gather ancestors would take to gather resources in the next seasonal grounds. It's how we evolved and makes perfect physiological sense. The steady levels of ketones bring fresh mental clarity and just an overall sense of well being. Due to a knee injury and surgery, I went from 6'3" and 225 up to the 275lb range. I did a five day fast several months back to test the waters and learn about the process. Currently I'm more than 880 hours ( Day 37) into an extended water fast taking electrolytes, twice daily with black coffee in the morning with a daily over age 50 multi-vitimen. I have no issues with cravings and go along with friends to burger places and restaurants just drinking a glass of water, lol! It's been an amazing xperience that I can't express in words to my friends! Your advice to ramp up slowly breaking ther fast is important. I'll be very thiamine deficient as it's the only amino acid that we can't naturally metabolize on our own. I'll be taking a B1 suppliment two days prior tothe break and will make a beef bone broth along with homemade lacto-fermented veggies such as saurkraut and kimchi to help the gut biome prepare for lean proteins and fats day three of the break. For the reluctant I suggest going beyond 36 hours where the door just begins to open to the magic of fasting. Five days and your eyes and mind will open and you'll discoveer that you naturally have super human powers inside you!
I've been doing low carb and intermittent prolonged fasting this year. I'm down 60 lb with about half of this year off the wagon to enjoy fairs and festivals etc. The longest I've gone is 10 days but I would really like to do a 30-day fast. You really do feel like Superman. Energy and mental acuity is off the charts.
I don't recall where this helpful tidbit came from, but putting Time, Distance and/or Productivity between you and the temptation has been very helpful to me. I am not fasting with you, but keeping to a keto lifestyle can be challenging and putting this tip into practice has been good for me. I admire you for doing this fast. I hope it goes well for you!
Steve, Keto Chow does have their Clean Slate Saltt too, which doesn't have any of the flavors or sweeteners...I know you know you got this thing! Happy fasting!
For the month of June I’m doing 1-24 hour fast a week. I’m going to try & go farther to join in on your challenge too! I would love a video on snake juice!
I've always taken all my regular vitamins and supplements during any length of fast and had no issues with it. same with adding lemon or lime and ginger juice and ACV to my water.
Too much magnesium will cause diarrhea. Magnesium citrate is straight up sold as a laxative, and the other magnesiums work the same way, to lesser extents.
Yep. That's why people take MOM to move their bowels. Milk of magnesium! You definitely don't want to take more than a teaspoon of that stuff! I took the recommended dose and regretted it 😂
Enjoyed this video so much; the blips were fun. I may join you for a shorter fast this time. My husband is going to be away for about 8 days in August, so I think I will try for the longer fast then. I wish you all the very best of luck with your fasts!!
Great job, I’ve been doing carnivore since January and I’m losing weight still so I haven’t fasted that much. Really gotta get in a 5 day immunity reset in before winter.
Thanks for all the info Steve! Great video! Love the bloopers and sign change. Would love to see the Snake juice video. Can’t wait to see your progress.❤
Sounds like a good plan 👍🏼 When I do an extended fast ( which I should do more often) I just have purified still water and Daily Minerals or some unflavored Topo Chico with the minerals. I love how crisp and refreshing Topo Chico is. It’s my favorite of the sparkling waters. It might be something you’d consider on this channel… creating challenges for your viewers to really get them engaged in the channel. I think it might be fun 😊 Thank you for sharing your experiences! It’s very helpful 😉
each time I have gone longer than the time before, I have always been worried I can't do more than before, but always been surprised how easy it is to go longer. so I know any of you can do it, too!!
I agree with Steve. Once I hit 36 hours my hunger was gone. I’ve gone 96 hours & broke my fast because I thought that was long enough, not because of hunger
@@joannarippon3910I've done a couple of 10-day fasts and there just isn't any hunger. So much energy and mental acuity. Had no problems prepping meals for the family without being tempted to eat at all.
I've done multiple 64 hour fasts in the past and find the first 24 hours are the toughest. I'm going to start mine now through either Sunday dinner or Monday at noon.
Good Morning Steve....I just got a chance to watch this video....FANTASTIC CONTENT ! my husband fasts, just ended a five day, and he does it every couple of months to reset....I want to do a 3 day I was told that is the time 72bhours for your body toheal itself.......I think I would like to try doing more than what I have(2 day) I take a lot of meds but have done 2 days and I do intermittent fasting all the time. Hay Steve, I'm just beginning at least a 36-hour fast tonight. Depending on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the signals from my "earth suit" will depend on if I go five days. Thanks for the list of must haves for a successful water feast. I will incorporate some of them. I am praying for you, myself, and the others walking through this water feast. Be thankful, be Worship-filled, be safe, Keto On, and God bless!
I was going to start a three day fast yesterday… I went ALL day and into the evening, then my wife brought home leftovers from the Mexican restaurant… so I had some… so, NOW I’m starting the fast. I’ll commit to five days with you!
Lol I was prepping veggie snack trays while you mentioned prep time 😁 wishing Teri a great, safe trip and you a good fast. I won't be fasting but I support your journey 🛣️
This is great. Loved the info and approach to this. I’m on day 2 of my 72 hour fast. I do it once a month. My partner has even joined in for the first 24 hours after my third time doing it. I did start with omad and then 24 hours etc so I built up to this. For this one I am trying something a little different. My first 24 hours I had my black coffee (yuck) and 2 scoops of Dr Berg’s electrolytes. For day 2 I am doing a dry fast. I have heard that a 24 hour dry fast is “as good as a 3 day water fast”. I have no idea but I want to experiment. I am hoping to not use any electrolytes to obviously avoid any liquids but if the cramps come, it’s not worth it and I’ll have to try a different approach. Good luck on your fast and thanks for helping to maybe motivate others and for this useful info.
I'm in for at least 72hrs and hopefully more. It's going to help that I'm putting my wife and daughter on a plane Friday morning. They usually get overly concerned when I try to fast.
advice that helped me: if you feel something in your tummy and wonder if that is hunger, you can test it! Just have a couple swigs of liquid and wait 10 mins. Every time I've done this, that feeling goes away, therefore it was not actually hunger.
I think it’s also important to check any medications taken regularly to ensure that you know what may impact the amount of electrolytes are being taken.
Yes to medications, however if you take any medications for diabetes ESPECIALLY insulin please check with your doctor for advise on holding those medications.
Megan Ramos (Dr. Fung’s business partner from The Fasting Method) says to start from day one with sodium, because it will catch up with you, assuming you’re a person that needs it. Once you’ve done a couple days of sodium/electrolyes, then maybe experiment to see how you feel. Also, magnesium is usually the one that can lead to diarrhea, but too much salt can, too. With autophagy, Dr. Fung used to say that it maxed out at about 72 hours, which is when stem cell production really kicks in at days 4 & 5. I suspect that just as with ketone production, autophagy, stem cell production, etc., may become more efficient as we become more metabolically healthy and flexible. For example, ketones can kick in for someone a lot more quickly when they’re metabolically flexible than for someone who isn’t and is still considered insulin resistant.
As I said, there are a lot of fasting experts and self-appointed "experts", yet few of them seem to agree. For example, I don't know how anyone actually measures autophagy. My tips are based on my experience and are applicable to ME. I encourage people to keep a journal, track their electrolytes and track how they feel so that they can dial in what works best for THEM. I definitely agree with you on metabolic flexibility.
Hi Steve! 👋🐈 I have tried to fast, many times, longest, maybe 30 hrs?? The huge, sometimes painful (and I am on 60mgs morphine) stomach pangs and whatever that which is loudly grumbling, both drive me nuts! Your "suggestions" (WM affordable electrolytes drink) are very valuable for me as I will attempt a fast with you. I seriously doubt a 5 day fast. I would love to "feel" that autophage effect, but... shall see. Success to us both, then! 🤗🐈
Hey!! I'm coincidentally doing a extended fast from today :-D I hope that I can reach 96+ this time, will follow this channel, you're not alone I don't consider myself as a pro-faster, so I prep this fast with practically all you've mentioned in your video let me know if I can contribute something to your channel, go go go!!!
The autophagy research is pretty new, the person who discovered it won the Nobel Prize just in 2016, so there’s a lot of different info floating around. Plus, each individual has a unique body, and what might be successful for one person may not be suitable for someone else. My usual approach involves following my intuition, experimenting through trial and error, and listening to the signals from my body. For the past month, I’ve been practicing keto/OMAD, and I can’t stress enough how incredible it has been in terms of weight loss, blood sugar control, and overall improved mood and energy. May you have great luck (and good health) during your upcoming fast!
I believe that there are very few situations in life where "one size fits all". As you said, we are all individuals and need to take ownership of our own choices and experiments.
Good luck on the fasting. Interesting you said that about electrolytes and tummy issues because I’ve noticed when I drink LMNT, my belly doesn’t like it. Thought I was just crazy but evidently it is a “thing”. Thanks for the info.
On my last fast, I consumed the recommended amount of electrolytes from LMNT and I spent a lot of time in the bathroom. I've experienced similar results from Keto Chow's Daily Electrolytes. For me, at least, they are overpowered vs what I need.
Love your new channel Steve, it would of been great to start the fast on the first of July, but I know how life is, you got to get in a fast in when you can. I'll be starting my 5 day fast July 1st throughout the the holiday, "July 4th" which will test my will power, and when I re-feed I know I'll be seeing fireworks then. LOL
Doing my first extended fast starting at the end of my normal meal window on Monday evening. Already have my XLS tracker set up with KPIs. Will be tracking my water volume intake, electrolytes, blood pressure/heart rate, blood glucose and ketones via Freestyle Libre 14-day CGM and my KetoMojo, weight/BMI/% H20/% muscle via digital scale, and body parts measurements -- neck, chest, belly, waist, hips -- with a tailor's tape. Interested to see what changes, when, and by how much. Some youtuber called SeriousKeto posted a video on homemade electrolyte elixir this week so I am going to try that instead of my normal LMNT brand -- which I take every day to prevent keto cramps. Since this is my first time on extended fast I am not going to overdo it with exercise, just daily walks at a casual pace. I don't have a plan for how many days yet because I have never done this and want to see how my body reacts. I will start with a minimum of three days and go from there, depending on how I feel.
I love fasting. I do a week every 3 months. As long as you're fat adapted and take the electrolytes it's a breeze. Plus my ketones go through the roof! I would join you but it doesn't fit in my schedule at this time.
@@LeanBodyMind Yep, that's about where my ketones were also. And indeed, just a small amount of electrolytes is enough for me. Too much and it's rocket time! 💩
Oral epsom salts may cause GI issues. Since that's "mega" magnesium, take care. I'd love to meet this challenge but the timing in my life is not great right now. Looking forward to future challenges. :-)
Looking at my tracking spreadsheet, I found that right around 500mg of magnesium was my "sweet spot". No GI issues, no muscle cramps, no weakness or dizziness.
I think it may be the magnesium that causes the tummy issues. I got sample packets with my last perfect keto collagen.. one of them being the beauty and sleep. I thought of you and laughed when I used it for pre-workout as I'm one of those that goes cray cray on it
I did a 45-hour fast a couple years ago. The hunger goes away completely after less than a day. I do remember that falling asleep was difficult on the second night 🤔. It was a decent experience overall. Hardest part was trying to explain to people why I wasn't eating. Lots of close-minded folks out there. 🙄
Hi Steve. A while back, you did a video on Serious Keto at the end of one of your extended fasts and you took a breathalyzer test and it showed you well above the legal limit for driving. My job requires a CDL and part of holding it requires random drug and alcohol testing. The alcohol testing is done with a breathalyzer sometimes similar to the one you had in the video. How long into a fast do you think it takes to hit that .08 limit. In my case it has to be below .02. There is a zero policy at my workplace for alcohol. I haven't done any fasts longer than 4 days and I start them on a Thursday and end on Sunday so I can eat a little and get my ketones back down in the 1-1.5 range before I go back to work. You never know when you are going to get tested and I don't want to push my luck with a false reading. Thanks for the videos and content. Between Keto and fasting Im down over 50 pounds in the last year and still have another 20 or so I want to lose. Your videos are just one of the tools I use to help educate myself. Best of luck on your extended fast. I will follow along but won't be joining in until Thursday. Take care.
Disclaimer: this is neither medical nor legal advice. First, I suspect that a real professional breathalyzer would be able to distinguish between breath ketones and alcohol. Second, if I ever failed a breathalyzer and hadn't been drinking, I would demand an immediate blood test. That said, I don't think I'd risk my job for the sake of a fast.
Thanks for the reply. The employer uses an outside vendor for testing and if you want to challenge a result you have to pay for it out of pocket and depending on how long it takes to get an independent test could make the test invalid for results. I will stick with my original plan and just stick to the 4 day fasts ending on Sundays. Might even invest in a cheap breathalyzer and do some testing myself. Again thanks for the content and the time you put into it.
I hope you don’t mind if I join you, but with a modified fast that helps me better. I have protein/electrolyte water I use when I feel the need to reset. I always feel so much better when I do this for a week or so.
Sorry for a second comment/question. I know you mentioned staying busy while fasting. Do you also continue your exercise while fasting? I typically exercise while fasting, but I am only intermittent fasting and eat one to two meals a day. What are your, or your other viewers, thoughts on exercising during an extended fast? Thank you!!
I do exercise - both strength and cardio training - during my extended fasts. The first extended fast, I overdid the exercise and under-did the electrolytes. I feel that each person needs to dial in what they are capable of during a fast, to listen to their body, and to keep a journal of their exercise, electrolyte consumption, and how they are feeling.
I like the idea of having a list. As part of my self-improvement I've started creating art again. I don't know why I gave it up for so many years. It's meditative for me and I feel so much better and more positive. That will keep me busy. I might try the fast. I've only done a short liquid fast when I had to prep for my colonoscopy 😂 Anyway, I had the best sleep of my life the night before. It sounds weird but I keep saying I'm going to fast but food always wins out. When is eveyone starting their fast?
If I do a 3 day water fast, my throat is sore, too sore to eat at the end of the fast, no matter how little I eat or drink on day 4. Sore throat lasts at least two days after. Not looking forward to that part.
I do. My recommendation is that if a person is new to extended fasts, they should take it fairly easy until they know what their body can handle. Getting one's electrolyte intake dialed in is a big part of that, in my opinion.
@@LeanBodyMind I filled up my granddaughters 10’ pool since it’s 100 today here. I will get in the pool to help me get through cravings. I will exercise in there.
I wonder what age cavemen lived to? Oh wait, I can Google that. The answer is 25 years old, on average. Yep, it was a good time to be alive (so long as you weren't interested in being alive for very long).
*You made a disturbing statement here and also offered some questionable advice.* As someone who has water fasted many times through the decades (way before the Internet, Dr. Fung, and packaged electrolytes) with my fasts lasting 9 to a full 31 days-- I have something important to say here. I am medication-free but I DO know that telling people they should continue to take their medicines while fasting is folly or worse -- very dangerous. Some people seeking fast weight loss (not cleansing) are also likely to be on insulin injections and blood pressure medications. Blood pressure AND insulin drop naturally VERY dramatically during a fast. Those not in tune with their body signals could be totally unaware. If they don't adjust the dosage they could have a life-threatening situation and end up in the hospital, or even worse. *People on medication should NEVER ever fast unsupervised.* They don't need to check into a 5K a week fasting clinic, but at the very least they should be monitored daily by a health care professional. My second point is it is NOT ideal to tell people to do their "honey-do" lists and ramp up activity with projects while fasting. To get maximum benefit, one needs to slow down and REST. Some beginners even have to do bed rest. *More activity to distract oneself from hunger is never the smart thing to do.* Water Fasting (esp. longer than a week) is as spiritual an experience as one allows it be. If you want to ramp it up-- like a sports event--- you just won't get the benefits. You will just be raising, not lowering, cortisol levels. Hunger dissipates after the 3rd day for most people. Day 2 is usually the hardest. It's pretty life-changing to see the effects of autophagy after fasting. As for re-feeding after the fast, I know people who can't digest hard-boiled eggs under normal circumstances. Beef and chicken broth with salt is like a soothing feast and very easy on the gut. Your taste buds are so sensitive now. Then something simple and soft (like gently scrambled eggs) are FAR more digestible for most people.
@@LeanBodyMind You missed my whole point. I never said you couldn't do marathons while fasting. I can do a lot of physical activity while fasting after so much practice. But people on meds or beginners are a different issue. It is not black and white, one-size-fits-all.
I would argue, conversely, that you missed the point of this video. I stated that there are MANY opinions about fasting and the "right way" to do it, yet few seem to agree. So I offered my tips based on my experience. You offered yours.

Great suggestions Steve. SalTT raw unflavored is only electrolytes. The flavored ones have stevia and could cause fasting disruption.
I knew someone would find a use for the unflavored SaltT. Thanks, Deb. 🙂
Intro was great.
@@LeanBodyMind I’m glad I’m not alone. I thought I was just different for some reason lol. I’ve started using only half a packet.
LOL
So I'll be ending around when you are starting. Hopefully you find some inspiration and maybe even some tips from my experience.
Glad to have you along for the ride. 🙂👍
I'm in!
Thank you
I love fasting. I do a week every 3 months. As long as you're fat adapted and take the electrolytes it's a breeze. Plus my ketones go through the roof! I would join you but it doesn't fit in my schedule at this time.
I've discovered that my electrolyte "sweet spot" is a lot lower than what certain influencers (and companies like LMNT) recommend.
I think my ketones were up to 8 or 9 during my last fast.
There sure are. "You're starving yourself!"
I'm not very good with technology! I'm subscribed. Will that get me notified when you post? I want to participate in the fast.
If you click the bell that shows up on any video, that should allow you to turn on notifications. I would suggest selectin "All" of that's an option.
Everyone is welcome and do their fast however they feel best suits them. I’m not dogmatic. 😉
@@LeanBodyMind Thanks!
@@LeanBodyMind thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm looking forward to giving it a go. :)
I’m starting after dinner on Tuesday.
I'm starting after an early lunch on Tuesday.
When I'm taking electrolytes during fasting, it always amazes me how much potassium your body needs.
For me, I've found that potassium at about 1g per day is the right number.
Magnesium sulfate, Epson salts will definitely loosen you up.
I find that 500mg per day of magnesium is pretty much my sweet spot. All of the benefits, none of the bathroom trips.
@@LeanBodyMind Nice 👍🏻 thanks Steve.
Steve,
Have you ever heard of priming before a fast? I believe the Steak & Butter gang promotes this practice.
I have not, but then again, I don't run with the carnivore crowd.
@LeanBodyMind from what I've read, it's a no-go for me.
If I do a 3 day water fast, my throat is sore, too sore to eat at the end of the fast, no matter how little I eat or drink on day 4. Sore throat lasts at least two days after. Not looking forward to that part.
Yikes. I haven't had that issue, so I don't have any recommendations for you.
Do you still work out during the fast?
@@collettesnoozy7950 Only 82 here, but I just took a break from our 10' Intex pool (playing with Colton).
Youre whetting my appetite for another EF
I wonder how the caveman got his supplements when food was scarce? Do you think he went to Cavemart???
I wonder what age cavemen lived to? Oh wait, I can Google that. The answer is 25 years old, on average. Yep, it was a good time to be alive (so long as you weren't interested in being alive for very long).
High infant mortality, no er etc. Lots of elderly cavemen. Google wouldn't lie? Lol😂

Well, then you sure aren't going to like the interview I do with one of my viewers who has done multiple marathons in a fasted state.
