LOL hey jason I have the same inspire fitness equipment great machine durring times like this
Can you please do a video on high protein diets? I'm considering eating 150+ grams of protein on my 16/8 IF days in order to curb hunger and not binge and regain fat from my 72hr fasts. But I've heard protein creates an insulin response, is that something I should be worried about?
Could you possibly do an analysis on the Phoenix Protocol ( August Dunning ) specifically Chapter 3 on water fasting. According to this book an extended water fast beyond a couple of days will result in heart muscle loss ! This sounds counter intuitive , how would we have survived in Hunter gatherer days if by drinking water while on a hunt ( and therefore not eating food ) the heart was destroyed. The medical information in Chapter 3 looks like it is well referenced to medical reports so not easily dismissed. Would appreciate an MD analysis thx
Hello Jason fung your videos are life saving!! I have a personal question to ask you may I know how old are you? I know you have a son but don't know your age. If you are 40 or above I'll be very surprised
How are u going to train in a fasted state u will burn out
I've been fasting since I was 19 & read the book, Fasting The Ultimate Diet, by Allan Cott. Now I'm 60 & people say I look 40! Amen
Im doing omad can I ask which fasting you are doing
@@victorguani8799 I also do OMAD now. Plus, I try to get in a 3 day fast every month or 2 for anti-aging & to regenerate the immune system (according to research done by Dr. Valter Longo). In the past I did more long fasts, like up to a week, but I'm happy with OMAD & a 3 day fast when I feel like it
@@amberdawn1244 thanks
@@amberdawn1244 You do OMAD too? What time do you eat your meal?
@@carina9629 Lately I've been eating my daily feast at 2am. I'm a night person... I'm "not normal" if you talk to my family lol
I’ve been fasting since the last time I ate.
I lost 70lbs doing exactly what you are saying. Once I added resistance training while fasting I put on lean muscle and it completely changed my physique. One of the best decisions I've ever made!
This is about where I am now. Weight from 239 to 170 through fasting and LCHF with minimal processed foods. Although I am still overweight, I'm concerned about losing too much without having built up muscle. And also, losing so much that I one day become underweight. So, I've started with light weights at home. Any advice?
and then you woke up.

I started fasting just under a year ago. I primarily do ADF and go 36 hours before I eat for roughly 6-12 hours. I was 307 lbs when I started fasting and walking and I’m now between 195-205 depending on the day. I’ve started adding kettlebell workouts 3-4 days a week and I’ve seen a huge increase in my lean mass. Dr. Fung is the main reason I started fasting. Thank you.
On your up day do you just eat until satisfied? Do you track calories? I'm having issues trying to figure out how much to eat on up day

He is quite jacked
Being jacked does bring credibility in the fitness and nurtrition space, especially among the bodybuilding bro community where I'm seeing a lot of attacks. Might as well, being jacked is a social asset and is pretty easy to manage (its just the consistency that's hard.) He has the equipment, that's the hardest part.
Where was the one arm chin up? He used both arms to pull up his body.

With Intermittent fasting and low carb high protein and average fat, more veg moderate nuts and fruits, eating more whole real food, avoiding junk and with Cardio and resistance training I lost 7 kg in one month and the best shape ..... I'm now in the best shape of my life, I'm 33 Yr and I've studied pharmacy and public health...
Dr Fung is the most revolutionary man in the field of health and nutrition... The amount of nutrition knowledge I learnt in last one month is far better then my 10 yrs professional education

Damn bro, you trying to f.......?? Lol
Very true! I did intermittent fasting everyday for the last 3 years and I gain lots of muscles and lost fat and at 44 years I m in the best shape of my life thanks to training fasted , thank you for your information really appreciate
What time did you train?
@@antonyoneil294 I train early morning around 5:30, 6
@Robin Sailo I personally training fasted I couldn't even think to eat before working out
@Robin Sailo Not in my case, I guess I m use to it and the body is forced to use your own fat as energy this it sounds very good to me.
This did not work for me. I got very limited muscle grow even when being a newbie. I started adding a little bit of sugars or carbs before workout and I grew in one month all I did not grow in 6 previous months. I think it has something to do with cortisol levels or something.
I proved this is true for myself. I did my first 7-day water fast recently, at a point where my lifts were at their peak (bench, military press, lat pulls, etc). I lost 12 pounds during the fast. The first few days after the fast, I felt weak, of course, but within a week, I was right back at the same weights I was lifting and still about 7 pounds less bodyweight.
Hi. You wrote ~ "The first few days after the fast, I felt weak, of course" ~ why 'of course'? Can you explain why this was expected? Thanks
@@davidshillito I didn't eat anything for 7 days. It's pretty stressful on a body. At least that's my experience. If you don't feel any different after a 7-day fast, I envy you.
@@davidshillito cuz usually the first few days your body still expects food sources ... but after that period of time , it will be dependent on your body fat 100%
@@Ldenlord it goes for muscle first, bodyfat will always go last because it's more of a necessity to live.
Studies are great, but most of the time they don't play out in real life. And fasting is the fastest way to loose muscle. Point blank period.
It's got a ton of health benifits, but it's the absolute worst thing you can do if you want to build or maintain muscle mass.
Intermittent fasting is much more doable, but still not ideal if building or maintaining muscle is a goal
@@smont4335 if that’s really how the body works we’d extinct the long ago ... imagine we wouldn’t be able to hunt for food for long period of time , and losing all that muscle how tf do we have to strength to hunt for more food when animals are finally available ???? Our body store fat for this SOLE reason , to use it for fuel when we can’t eat ... imagine you save up all those woods but then chop down and burn your house just for fire in the winters , that’s how stupid your argument sounds
He clarified in one video what dozens of fitness gurus have danced around conflicting “conclusions” about. 25 and have been intermittent fasting since I was 18/19. Perfect example of the difference between expertise and education.
Yeah I can't wait for all the debunking videos by people who never tried fasting.

Hi Dr. Fung! So proud to be a small part of all the healing and good you bring to the world.
Our bodies are wise! They aren’t going to loose muscle in long fasts or our ancestors would not have been successful hunters and we wouldn’t be here.

It's important to note that Terry Crews has said he does 16:8 and works out in the morning. He then continues fasting after his workout until 2pm. This means that his body is still pumping out HGH while his muscles are recovering.

This message is so important. The first fasting I did was over 30 years ago but I stopped doing it because I was so afraid I would lose muscle! How I wish that I had know then what I do now, I would have been ripped that whole time.
I think most guys with abs starve themselves like this just dont admit it .
Can you please elaborate your knowledge
I think it’s down to individual. Because I lost fair amount of muscle when fasting
You won't lose any unless you do very long fasts. @@KingKikikoi
@@KingKikikoiBut did you actually continue to incorporate working out heavy etc while fasting?
Thank you Dr Fung this videos are so precious,I am 73 and doing every day 14 -17 hours fasting since last august and lost 12 kg also stop eating bread and doing weight training, use to be a binge eater 😊❤
Dr Fung has those guns who would have known 👀
I was impressed!
How perfect! I’m starting ADF with weight training. A beautiful friend who’s been weight lifting for years says that fasting and lifting don’t really go together, that lifting requires eating throughout every day to stay fueled and feed muscle growth.
But I knew I could make it work, get all the benefits of fasting AND lose weight and build muscle. As long as I keep my feeding days high-protein and nutritionally dense. Appreciating this video and the comments.
This doctor I think was talking about NOT loosing muscle, not about gaining muscle. We have fuel in our body for about 1 day as glycogen. But when fasting where we get protein which we need all the time for blood for example?!
I think we need to eat protein every day for just not to lose muscle.
@@SuperMrAndersen Dr. Fung noted that patients *gained* muscle while fasting. I know that I have. I've been doing mostly alternate day fasting for the past 7 montns, and am doing more exercises, more reps, and using heavier weights.
Your book did not shy away from scientific reasoning and was yet very easy to follow!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
01:10 🏋️♂️ *Muscle growth or shrinkage depends on stress applied, not solely on diet. Adequate nutrition prevents using muscle for fuel unless body fat percentage is extremely low.*
02:20 📊 *Alternate daily fasting did not decrease lean mass (including muscle); in fact, it potentially increased it, compared to fat loss.*
03:42 🔄 *Fasting strategies were more effective at preserving lean mass (muscle) compared to chronic calorie restriction, with a 4x better result in lean mass preservation.*
04:09 ⚖️ *Growth hormone plays a crucial role in lean tissue maintenance. Fasting increases growth hormone, preserving lean muscle while promoting fat loss, without causing side effects like injected growth hormone.*
06:29 🍲 *Fasting utilizes glucose and fat stores for energy, not protein. Body doesn't use muscle for fuel if other energy sources are available.*
07:09 🕒 *Terry Crews practices a 16-hour daily fast, followed by an 8-hour eating window. Exercising in a fasted state can increase training intensity and recovery due to hormonal changes.*
08:04 🌟 *Training in a fasted state, as done by Terry Crews and other celebrities, offers benefits such as heightened training ability, faster recovery, and anti-aging benefits without significant side effects.*

Growth hormone makes us more mature. As you said, when we fast, growth hormone increases, so why do our parents always say: You should eat to have more nutrients for growth? And another test is why all bodybuilders don't fast to build muscle, but instead they actually eat more protein?

Hey had no idea you had a channel! I found your video from one of your talks on fasting I saw randomly online the other day. It was so good and informative I saved it to listen during car rides. This video was great as well. I just started fasting few weeks ago so far the results seem to be well and I am not that hungry as I thought I would be. I am honestly use to it. I fast my first 8 hours after waking up and only eat within the 8 hours. I only do it 4 days out of the week though. On days I work. But on my off days I am still eating clean nothing too crazy. Already notice my abs showing up more now so lets see how it looks in few weeks. No signs of muscle loss yet so thats good. I will do an update video in the future on my channel. Love your videos so far Doctor thanks for them.

I'm about to turn 34 and had done intermittent fasting maybe around 15 years ago... I liked it then but never knew HOW it worked or WHY. After a 7 year hiatus from fitness and I.F, I started the gym again but this time with more research and knowledge and a plan. I've been at the gym for about 1.5 years now starting with training 2 - 3 times a week for a year and only recently 6 days a week. I have always wondered why and how I could be building muscle even though I'm not having food or protein in my anabolic window after training and now I know why. I'm almost at the best shape I've ever been in my life. I'm close to a body builders physique and I couldn't be happier so far. Thanks Jason for explaining this it finally fills in the blanks as to what I've always wondered.
